Lawyer charged after sting
By Toni Heinzl
Star-Telegram Staff Writer
FORT WORTH - Federal authorities have charged a Fort Worth lawyer
with laundering at least $259,000 of what he believed to be
proceeds of cocaine and marijuana trafficking after a sting
operation run by the Drug Enforcement Administration's Dallas office.
Anand Alloju, 37, was arrested Thursday, according to a DEA
complaint made public Friday. Also charged was Karen Lewis of
Colleyville, whom Alloju introduced to an undercover DEA agent
posing as a cocaine trafficker, according to the complaint.
Officials at the DEA and at the U.S. attorney's office in Dallas
would not clarify Lewis' connection to Alloju. The criminal complaint,
signed by DEA Special Agent Craig Scallan, lists several contacts
between Alloju, Lewis and the undercover agent, DEA Special Agent
Jesse Gonzalez, last year. The meetings, recorded by DEA agents,
began on June 13 when Gonzalez went to Alloju's downtown Fort Worth
office, the complaint said. The undercover agent "explained to Alloju
that the money he needed Alloju to launder for him were illegal proceeds
obtained from the selling of cocaine," the complaint says. They reached
an agreement, the complaint says: Alloju would represent Gonzalez in a
fictitious case, and the illegal drug proceeds given to him would be
recorded as payment for legal fees. In turn, Alloju agreed to return the
laundered drug money by writing checks on his business accounts to be
made payable to a business name provided by Gonzalez. Alloju would keep
an 8 percent commission, the complaint said. In a series of meetings ending
in December, at least $259,000 was laundered that way, the complaint says.
On Aug. 29, Alloju introduced Gonzalez to Lewis, who agreed to help Launder
drug money through her Colleyville business, according to the complaint.
Alloju graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University and earned
his law degree at Texas Wesleyan University Law School. He was
admitted to the bar in Texas in November 1995. He has no disciplinary
actions on file, according to the State Bar of Texas Web site. In 1989,
Alloju, then 23 and delivering Domino's pizzas, was in the news after
he was shot by two robbers. His ordeal was featured in a story in
Reader's Digest, which was involved in a court battle when a defense
attorney for one of the robbers sought to force the magazine to turn
over the tape with the writer's recorded interview with Alloju. The
attorney hoped the tape would help the defense of another man convicted
in a similar robbery and shooting.
