As my kids pop out grandkids like vending machines, I find that I want to have
things for them here at home that might spark an interest in Disney and/or model
railroading. Also, something that distracts them is attractive!

http://www.southernoregonz.com/Disney.html

Here is an NN3 layout I am working on that will capture some of the general
themes at the park. The base is cut out of pink foam, the rock formations are
carved using floral foam and the other details are scratch built as figure out
what I want to have on it. The mountain will have a view window at the back
side with the Rainbow caverns inside...the train progresses out to a wild west
looking area kinda like the Nature's wonderland ride. I'm drawing on the Peter
Pan Indian encampment and the Wilderness Fort on Tom Sawyers Island for the
right side of the loop, and on the other side...something out of Peco's Bill and
Thunder Mountain.

I have a few NN3 loco's but will be working over an extra Z Steam engine chassis
to create the Ward Kimball to pull a few freight cars around the layout.

An easy way to cheat your way out of the problem (like I'm doing), is because I
have an extreme limitation on space )I'm limited to a 96" x48" table, and I'm
using HO scale), I'm "cherry-picking" my favorite attractions and scenes. I'm
building most of my models from scratch using AutoCAD to make rendered card
stock models with touches of basswood, trimmed down architectural parts from
other things, found items, etc. I tried doing the 5/8 scale theory, but found
that, for me, I like the look of basing the front door of an attraction as being
30"-36" to accomodate HO figures, then I fudge the width and height to make a
pleasing proportion and for "build-ability". I have a pic folder, "Brad's
Stuff" that doesn't have much in it yet. If you are really interested in doing
a "Mine Train Thru Nature's Wonderland" check out this YouTube link. Be sure to
check the additional videos on the right side menu, and check out all his "Under
The Table"
attractions---http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=STNautilus&view=videos. He's
a great inspiration for me! Good Luck to you!

Hi Jim - Since you are interested in the original "Mine Train Through Nature's
Wonderland:, you should check out this guy's model on his YouTube channer
(http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=STNautilus&view=videos)... He his well
along on his mine train in HOn30 I believe.
Check the menu of videos on the right side of the screen to find it and other
great stuff he has done.
Good Luck, Brad

In 2005, for Disneyland's 50th anniversary, a model of the 1955 version of the
park was added to the Opera House. 16x14' does not sound far off.

However, checking the Wikipedia site says that N-scale is generally 1:148 in the
UK but 1:160 in the US. I guess this is related to a difference in standard
gauge when compared to the 9mm model gauge.

To add a new wrinkle, consider that the park's gauge is 36" and not standard
gauge. The locomotives are scaled down to be proportionate to this narrow track
gauge. This is the source of the 5/8 scale which is often referred to in
Disneyland documentaries and reference books.

You'd have to decide what sort of motive power you want to use. You will not
find, apparently, a Z-scale/gauge 4-4-0 based on a US prototype. You will have
an easier time finding similar locomotives in N-scale/gauge.

If you build the park based on the proportion of 36" (914.4mm) to 9mm then the
proper scale with N-gauge track is 1:101.6. Let's call it 1:100 to keep the
math simple since most measurements will be indistinguishable. Then, using the
2400' width x 2200' you'd be looking at 24'x22' for the model.

Of course at 1:100 scale you'll have to build your own buildings from scratch,
including doors and windows. Paper modeling or computer-controlled laser
cutting is obviously an option here.

It all depends on how you want to count your rivets. :)

Although I have done little actual construction, my interest is the old
Disneyland attraction called the Mine Train Thru Nature's Wonderland. This is
what preceded Big Thunder in Disneyland. My preferred time period is 1960-63
though versions of the attraction were open from June 1956 to Jan 1977. The
scale we will use is HOn30 which means 1:87 scale but using 9mm-gauge track to
represent the 30" gauge of the prototype for this attraction. It does mean that
the buildings of Rainbow Ridge are generally about an inch wide. Porter 0-4-0
locomotives for HOn30 are not common. I found a Joe Works 0-4-0T and if I can
remove the saddle tank and still get decent performance, I'll be happy.

Can't answer accurately without knowing the dimensions of the Park, and
those have varied over the years.

I have one source that claims the area of the Park is 97 acres. If true,
modeling this in N scale (1:160) would require 165 square feet, or a
square roughly 13 feet on a side.

You could fit this into a 2-car garage, but it'd be really tough
reaching the center!

I just looked somewhere else and it said N scale is 1:160 and 2200' would be 33'

Does that sound right?

Hey there, everyone.
Can you more experienced modelers give me your best estimates for the dimensions
on an N-scale model of the entire Disneyland park (no DCA)? I've ballparked it,
but want to know how accurate my guesses and math are.

I thought it was odd for a minute but then I looked at the "other videos by this

Now THAT"S cool (in a very geeky way of course)

Ok after the very long delay, sorry been busy with Spring Training, and arena
stuff, I finally have an update. I have finnished a 3D model in CAD of the IASW
facade, at least enough for me to get an overall view of the elevation, to make
sure eveything lined up correctly. Let me know what you think, I need to redo
the plot of the building a little more and work more on the area layout so that
from there I can figure out what scale I would like to use to start building the
model with.

Enjoy

Ed,

Have you checked the Disney Mountain Book yet? I picked it up at Disneyland
this past summer and it has shots of the model and I think a site plot of the
area around the base of the ride.

Cheers

Ed,

Let me look through my photos to see what I've got. Where should I send/post the
one's I have?
As far as the layout goes, here's the way it's layed out.  The waiting area for
HISTA is on the same side as the entrance to Space mountain.
The exit is on the same side as Space Mountain's exit. The old Mission to Mars
is now Redd Rockett's Pizza port. The actual restaurant area is contained in the
original
shell of Mission to Mars. There are tables and chairs kind of overflow seating
for the restaurant in the rest of that side under the skylight area before you
get to the Space mountain entrance. From the entrance there is a ramp which
takes you up to the upper level where you either enter Space Mountain from the
left (Fast Pass) or go across the upper area to stand in line and enter from the
right. Right side is Star Trader and the arcade. the upper area under the
skylight on that side is empty. There is an escalator in the arcade area to this
upper level but there is nothing there. Behind the arcade are a set of restrooms
and a waiting area just before the Space Mountain exit.

Ron

I've got a floor plan and elevations for the great movie ride If you need them
(lotsa detail around the chinese theatre end of the building) I got them off
ebay a few years ago. I was looking at your flickr photostream. Do you have the
whole disneyland site plan from that 1989 plan because I've always had trouble
figuring out all the ins and outs of the new fantasyland

a paper model of some sort to share. I have also started and
completed the New Utopia layout, most of the New 98 Tomorrowland
layout and elevations, and a full Star tours attraction with

There are a lot more drawings and stuff I have planed, but will

I haven't ever tried to model any of these, (stick closer to EPCOT Center
myself,) but I did spend many happy months cast at both Splash Mountain and the
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.  If you have any questions about the way things
go together, (especially Splash, whose queue buildings, backstage areas and show
scenes can get pretty hideously convoluted,) just drop me a line; I'll be glad
to help!  Best of luck!

The big challenge to all of these is that they are gravity-powered
attractions. This means that any model, no matter how accurate, will not
run at what looks like a reasonable speed. Of course, if you're just
building static models, this doesn't matter, but if it does, you have
several options:

1. Build it as is and let it roll fast.*

2. Build it with a powered chain drive that keeps a constant speed.

3. Build it with a series of chain drives that go slowly uphill and
faster down.

4. Built it with powered ride vehicles (and probably some form of cog
drive) that lets you control the speed based on the location along the
track. I have control circuits to make this happen if you can build the
vehicles.

All of the above can still have brakes for station stops. If you plan to
run more than one vehicle at a time, you'll need not only station
brakes, but section brakes as well to avoid collisions. The circuitry to
make this automatic is pretty simple, consisting primarily of photocells
and relays.

Expedition Everest has that nasty reverse section. Turns out this can be
modeled very simply with no moving parts at the switches (unless you
really want to model them as well).

The term "chain drive" above could also include flywheel motors (a la
Matterhorn) or linear induction motors (a la TTA).

* You can film a free-rolling model to look realistic by setting your
camera speed to the square root of the scale ratio. Thus in 1/4" = 1',
the scale ratio is 1:48, the square root of 48 is about 6.9, so if you
run your film about 7 times faster than normal, the resulting film will
come out looking right. Be sure to speed up your lift ramps by the same
ratio!

Do keep us informed if you elect to build one. There's lots of data and
advice available on this forum, and we'd like nothing better than to
help you figure out the sticky points.

he model looks good. Will you be adding color to the final model?

What else are you working on? Anything I can help with?

A side note to everyone on this list: I'm no longer updating my files on in the
photos area
of the club. I'm putting all new stuff over at flickr (they allow larger
pictures, commenting,
and notating drawings). Everyone is welcome to come take a look. If there's
something
you're looking for and you don't see it just ask I probably have it.

Go to http://www.pdf995.com/ and get their free download. It is
installed as a printer. Then in your CAD software just select 995 as
your printer and it will creat a pdf file. See my site
www.south-shore-line.com and click on the drawing of the layout half
way down the page. I have used this program for years to convert
anything to a PDF.

One of these days I'm going to have to go back through my pictures of
DisneyWorld from last fall and sort them out. Microsoft has a free program
called PhotoSynth that can stitch digital photos together to form a much larger
picture. I might be able to build a 3D model in True Space (also free) of some
of Disney's facades.

Finally after 2 years of drawings and lots and lots of errors, I
finnnally made a model of Disneyland's IASW attraction Facade. I have
been drawing this just from pictures, and recently a blueprint that I
purchechesd on ebay. I promise I will share the drawings with everyone
as soon as I can make sure everthing is correct and I figure out a
better way of taking a CAD drawing and puting it in Photoshop.
Also the pictures you see are not to scale, both the clock tower and
the back facade are different sizes, so I need to fix that. Also the
finnale model that I build will be larger, in size and more detailed
instead of so flat looking.
I have been working on this for about two years now along with other
disney attractions, so this is a first of about 10 other drawings and
models that I am working on to put on this board. I might even have
another drawing to put on tonight.

Thank you

I am building an O Scale railroad in my basement. I intend to build an
operating amusement park on the layout. I did purchase the Monorail
model sold at WDW last year. I hope to use it as a kiddy ride due to
the scale difference. Most of my models will be of traditional park
rides from the 40s and 50s. But I have not eliminated the use of some
Disney rides also.

Thanks
