Just saw this AP article at
http://tech.yahoo.com/news/ap/20090201/ap_on_hi_te/tec911_swatting

titled "Fraudulent 911 callers create havoc"

The article begins, "Doug Bates and his wife, Stacey, were in bed
around 10 p.m., their 2-year-old daughters asleep in a nearby room.
Suddenly they were shaken awake by the wail of police sirens and the
rumble of a helicopter above their suburban Southern California home.
A criminal must be on the loose, they thought.

"Doug Bates got up to lock the doors and grabbed a knife. A beam from
a flashlight hit him. He peeked into the backyard. A swarm of police,
assault rifles drawn, ordered him out of the house. Bates emerged,
frightened and with the knife in his hand, as his wife frantically
dialed 911. They were handcuffed and ordered to the ground while
officers stormed the house.

"The scene of mayhem and carnage the officers expected was nowhere to
be found. Neither the Bateses nor the officers knew that they were
pawns in a dangerous game being played 1,200 miles away by a teenager
bent on terrifying a random family of strangers."

The tactic is called "swatting" because SWAT teams often show up at
the victims' homes as a result of the prank calls. Those who engage
in this crime are known as "swatters." This sounded like something
in a Ditko story to me... A more extreme version of "Answer the
Phone, Dottie!"

The AP article notes, "Investigators say swatters are usually
motivated by a mixture of ego and malice, a desire for revenge and
domination over rivals."

They are envious and hateful of others, finding satisfaction and
pleasure in their efforts to disrupt or destroy the lives of others
(including people that they have never met and who have done them no
harm). They must see another person's happiness as a threat to their
own happiness. They seek "domination over rivals" (i.e., over anyone
they perceive as better than themselves), using lies and force to
bring about their destructive goal.

In Ditko, etc., we are shown two brutes, Force and Violence. Force
is described as "Physical power or strength exerted against a person:
physical coercion." Violence is described as "Physical force used as
to injure or damage." The Swatters are a real-life example of those
two characters.

Another character that ought to be named is Fraud, which might be
defined as "a falsehood by which one harms or deprives the
innocent." As the AP title says, the phone calls were "Fraudulent,"
based on non-existent, fabricated threats. The unreal was declared
real, and the good was used to do bad -- justice used to create an
injustice.

The AP article concludes, "One of the defendants currently serving a
five-year sentence, told the AP in a series of letters from prison
that the attacks started with the standard fare of prank callers —
sending pizzas and locksmiths to victims' homes — escalated to
shutting the power and water off and eventually led to swatting."

This reminds me of the escalation shown in "My Brother..." (MURDER
#3) where the small "petty crimes" by the bad brother, Ben,
increasingly led to more serious crimes. They started as "just a
gag" and evolved into cold-blooded murder. It was the mentality of
wrongdoing which led down that path, a road which began with a single
step in that direction. In the case of the above Swatter, a road
which finally led to prison because of his crimes.

Funny, I saw the following article in today's paper. It reminded me
not of a Ditko story per se but of a certain worldview:

Georgia couple to get $20,000 in charity from eBay auction winners
By Tracy Connor, NY DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

Saturday, January 31st 2009, 9:36 PM

A Georgia drowning in medical bills for their two disabled kids put
everything they own - except for their house - up for auction on eBay.

Last week, Gregg and Brittiny Peters accepted a bid of $20,000 for all
worldly possessions - but it came with a catch.

The winners, a Texas couple, want the family to keep the money and
their stuff.

"They've worked really hard to get those things and we're in a
position to help them," Donnia Blair told The Associated Press.

In a strange twist, though, the Peters clan isn't happy about the bid.
They said they were looking for a fresh start - not charity.

"They are apparently not willing to take our stuff," Brittiny Peters
said. "They're purchasing them to give them back to us."

The mom of three - who has one child with autism and another with
arthritis - said she may accept the cash but donate the auction items
to others.

You know,

This reminds me of an odd situation that developed on another comics based yahoo group that I was a member of, a few years ago or more.

About three or more years ago, on another comics based yahoo group, someone had posted some pro spam in favour of the Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, also known as The Mormons.

The owner of the group then posted he was 'pretty sure' who had planted that spam, and there were hints from himself, that it was myself who had sent that spam.

I was flabbergasted. Then I figured it out. He was assuming that because my legal surname is Latter, that, gee, I must be a Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints/-Mormon member, the suspected spammer.

I enlightened him that no, my surname of Latter actually goes back several hundred years at least, and it is in fact Welsh in origin. And if it has any religious connections, I am blissfully unaware of it.

I then explained that, not only am I not a Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints/-Mormon member, if the truth be known, I am a pretty nice guy, but I am also.....an atheist.

Then there was some serious backpedalling on the part of the accusing poster.

It was funny and surreal.

I have nothing against religious people, though.
To each their own.

I'm not fond of being stopped on the street and being lectured by any members of any religious sect, which is something that both The Mormons do. But at least they are always polite.

I just say, "No, thank you", and keep going.

Best Wishes,

Phil Latter

Having the last name "Young" and being originally from Idaho (the state with the second highest populations of Mormons after Utah), I was often mistaken for a Mormon. A common question was, "Are you a descendant of Brigham Young?"

No, I'm not. The Young family of which I am a descendant were hillbillies in the Ozark mountains who eventually emigrated to Idaho. It's just a coincidence that I have the same last name as the second prophet of the Mormon Church. In actuality, the Ozark Mountain Youngs are related to Jesse James and the Younger Gang.

However, I never had a Mormon lecture to me. They always asked me if they could give me a free copy of the Book of Mormon.

I would always say, "Sure."

I love to get free books. :)

I always appreciated the fact that devout Mormons don't smoke. I'm allergic to tobacco, and being surrounded by Mormons kept me from having asthma attacks. :)

Barry,

For me, my dad is now, and always has been, such an extreme bible thumper, as they say, while I get along with him, for the first 19 years of my life, before I moved to Toronto from Nova Scotia, he verbally crammed religion down our throats every chance he got.
By the time I was out on my own, this had the opposite effect of what he'd attended.
Meaning, by then, I was totally turned off religion.

Now, when we get together, he knows, finally, not to bring up that topic.

Best Wishes,

Phil

Some might claim we're a gang of unruly punks, but we're actually
erudite and charming (well, SOME of us! :)

A band? Well, Doc plays a mean piano, my brother and Doc's son play
the guitar a little...now if only Barry, Peter and I could learn to
play an instrument...We could change our name to the Sinister Six!

Yep, we're doing better than ever!  Even at NYCC we did better than we did last year.  We're publishing BIONICLE (a series based on a line of toys for boys produced by LEGO), The Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, Classics Illustrated (we're republishing as hardcovers the First Comics Classics, and publishing all-new, much longer adaptations in Classics Illustrated Deluxe), and Tales from the Crypt (all-new).  We've got a few new titles in the works as well.  Basically, we're producing material for all-ages and the reception we've gotten has been very positive.

Again, it would've been great to meet some of you guys in person!  maybe at a MoCCA event?

Hi Jim,

I am curious....is Papercutz still going strong? I stopped paying attention when they ceased putting out new Zorro comic books.
What are they publishing these days?

Best,

Hey, I should've posted something before the NYCC to say that I would be at the Papercutz/NBM booth throughout the convention, and it would've been great to meet fellow listers!  Maybe next time...?

I met Craig Yoe at the Comiccon this weekend and I asked him about
getting Ditko to work on an issue of Big Boy comics. It was an
interesting story, some of which he wrote about in detail on his site:

http://arflovers. com/Blog/ ?p=701

Barry, Doc V, my brother and I had a great time at the con, chatting
with Dick Ayers and Gene Colan, meeting Joe Kubert, having dinner with
Joe Sinnott and family and speaking with Syd Shores daughter, as well
as meeting a number of listers.

Phil,

Dark Horse has been connected to the Green Hornet for some time, and I was watching what was happening on the proposed to Green Hornet film with great interest, until the casting fell apart again.  This is important to me because Papercutz books are mainly targeted at kids, and if the characters aren't on TV or in movies, or somewhere that kids are paying attention, then bookstores won't carry our graphic novels. I love all those Pulp characters, but if kids don't know who they are, they won't buy 'em.  Or so I'm told.

Isn't Sam Rami involved in a Shadow movie (and just to cheat to get back on topic, I believe Sam's already done three successful films based on one of Mr. Ditko's characters)?  That would be great -- but again, does dark horse still have the comicbook/graphic novel rights?  Who knows...?

We are trying to bring back a character similar to one of the Pulp characters you mentioned -- the character was even published by DC Comics -- in an upcoming Hardy Boys graphic novel.  In its own weird way it'll be kinda like when the Avengers originally brought back Captain America.  But I can say no more about it now.

As for Don McGregor, a 30th anniversary hardcover edition of the original Sabre graphic novel, illustrated by Paul Gulacy, should be out soon with a new introduction by Don -- it's black and white, 48 pages for $14.99 from Desperado Publishing.  An all-new script for another Sabre graphic novel has been completed by Don and may be forthcoming from Desperado as well.

Thanks for the best wishes for Papercutz.  It's greatly appreciated.

Also, thanks to Rob Imes for Ditkomania #70!  It's got me wanting to track down all those Ditko Blue Beetles! (And just to make up for being so off-topic today -- Ditko, Ditko, Ditko!)

Thanks,
Jim

I'd love to see one of the comics groups get a license to put out Green Horent Comics! Now there is a character that has been out of the public eye for a long, long time, and with a ton of fans!

Phil,

Jim,

I had heard nothing to do with Dark Horse having any Green Hornet rights. Can you tell me more about that, and will anything come of it? Does anyone other than Jim know anything about this?

You sure have me curious as to what character will be in Hardy Boys by Papercutz!
Will the character literally be a character that was in DC Comics (or) will it be a similar character made up by Papercutz?
I really you can't tell me at this time which character it will be, but, can you answer the above question?

To Rob Imes,

I, too, received, gratis, Ditkomania # 70, the first issue that I have ever seen, and it is great!
I will be looking (and paying) with interest, future issues!

Thank you very much for your great kindness! I really appreciate it! Wonderful publication!

Jim, yes, by all means, look for and find the Steve Ditko silver age Charlton Blue Beetle comics, they are great! Previous to that, the Ditko Blue Beetle also appeared in Charlton's Captain Atom title for several issues, and of course, those Charlton Captain Atom issues are also by Ditko! I completed my sets of all of that stuff several years ago, and, more recently, all of the Ditko much rarer Space Adventures # 33 and up Captain Atom appearances, from Doug Sulipa's Comics World, who has a website on the net. I've been dealing with him for buying scarce and rare vintage comics for decades! He's great!
A lot of folks are unaware that, in Captain Atom's first appearance in Space Adventures # 33 (VERY early 1960's), inside that comic book, unlike its' cover, Captain Atom's outfit was actually powder blue and black, and NOT yellow and orange/-red-! It's an interesting look, I tell you!
When later, the issue was reprinted (more than once), the same story was recoloured, and in those reprints, the costume was yellow and orange/-red, as you would suspect!

Back on the Green Hornet topic for a bit: it is indeed a shame that The Green Hornet movie went kaput once director Kevin Smith walked away from it! I guess now that that movie will never get made! What a shame. Sigh.

Best Wishes to you and the very kind Rob Imes-!

I hadn't heard about a new upcoming Shadow movie! Who can tell me about that? And also, I heard there will be a new Lee Falk's The Phantom movie, to be filmed in Australia! Is there any more recent news on that?

Best to all,

Phil Latter

So Papercutz has the rights to Richard Benson and will be bringing him back in a Hardy Boys graphic novel. I'll have to remember to have someone review that for Comics Bulletin. I'm a big fan of that character.

And my the first mystery novel that I ever read was The House on the Cliff--a Hardy Boys novel that I was given to read when I was in second grade. It scarred the crap out of me--in a good way.

To Jim,

I also read the Hardy Boys novels as a kid, when they were hardcovered! I liked them!

Tom Swift novels were fun, too!

Thanks,
Jim

Jim,

I'd love to see one of the comics groups get a license to put out Green Horent Comics! Now there is a character that has been out of the public eye for a long, long time, and with a ton of fans!

Tarzan, Doc Savage, The Shadow, and The Avenger (all Pulp magazine characters) would be great, too!

Continued best wishes for Papercutz!

By the way, what is Don McGregor doing these days?

Phil,

Jim

Barry, Doc V, my brother and I had a great time at the con, chatting
with Dick Ayers and Gene Colan, meeting Joe Kubert, having dinner with
Joe Sinnott and family and speaking with Syd Shores daughter, as well
as meeting a number of listers.
