I looked at breviary.net, for the commemoration of the 22nd Sunday, and I could
not find the V/R used there...I found the Ant once, but not again when I was
looking for the V/R. What is the rubric re: commemoration of the Sunday during
a feast?

I see my mistake. The Breviary.net is Roman, and using the 23 Sunday after
Pentecost, which would be the Anglican, 24th Sunday after Trinity..and there I
found the Ant for the Magnificat. The V/R were the ones normally used at
Vespers on a Sunday! They are on B31.

I apologize for the original question, I just got lost in the confluence of
Christ the King, All Saints, and the Trinity 22.

God's blessings on all of you.

I have been using the Anglican Breviary in conjunction with BReviary.net bur the
V/R of the lessons in these nocturnes don't agree. I found one of them in
Common 6 but couldn't find them all. Is the Roman breviary and Anglican
Breviary different with these V/R?

Yes, Jim, and there seems to be a wider variety of lessons...the gospel is the
same, but, the homily is different on Thursday and Friday in the Roman Breviary
on breviary.net, as opposed to the AB. I've been doing the assigned scripture
for the appropriate day in AB for Nocturn 1, but, following the breviary.net for
Nocturn 2 & 3.

Can anyone recommend a good commentary on the Psalms that uses for its text the
Coverdale translation?
At present I am using "The Psalms" by WE Barnes in the Westminster Commentaries
Series [pub 1931] which, though good, is irritating as it uses the text of the
Revised Version.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Clarke's Commentary used to be a standard resource. He was a Methodist though.

You can judge for yourself as his commentary is on-line at:

How about J.M. Neale’s Commentary? It uses the Coverdale psalms but the commentary is almost overwhelming!

I got it done at Old Leather Books in Erving, Mass.

www.oldleather.com

Sandy is a one person shop and will take the time to speak with you in detail
before you go forward. The good news is that the sticking of the book is done
well so it did not need to be done over. Not cheap but I love the book that it
was worth it. Could be done a little cheaper with a basic leather cover (rather
than the medieval) but I couldn't resist.

In the proper of the day, the rubrics call for a ferial Compline.

Am I correct that this is a gentle reminder that Martinmas is not of sufficient
nobility to take the antiphon and psalms of Sunday, and that therefore they are
taken from the occurrent day of the week?

The only other interpretation I could divine is that the rubrics are calling for
the dominical Preces even though the Hour is recited within an Office of Double
rite. I am doubtful of this, however, since the rubrics of Compline
specifically state that the Preces are omitted on Doubles.

Richard

Your first supposition is correct. It's because St Martin of Tours is a semi-excepted Feast. The Psalms at Matins, Lauds and II Vespers are of Sunday (or from the Common). This is a reminder that Compline is not of Sunday, but the weekday. You will find that it also gives you the same reminder about Prime and the Little Hours.

The Psalms at I Vespers would also be of Sunday, but the preceding Feast is of equal rank and therefore the Psalms belong to it.

Best wishes,

Mark

St.Martin is the patron Saint of the city of Aalst where I live. Hence his feast is celebrated as a 1st class double here, which makes things easier for me. Sunday/festive psalms at all hours and compline of Sunday ;-)

Being of the Celtic-Orthodox bent, I observed today the feast day of the martyr

St. Columbanus receives little attention (in addition to falling on a Sunday

Does the Feast of St Columbanus fall for you in any of the categories listed
under Heading 4 on p. xliv? If so as a Primary I Class Double it would take
precedence over the Presentation, which you would either ignore altogether
or commemorate as a Permanent Occurrence (i.e. simplify it and commemorate
it at I Vespers, Matins, and Lauds only).

If St Columbanus doesn't fall into any of those categories, then it would
not be correct under the rules to transfer it. It should be commemorated as
a Permanent Occurrence.

Best wishes,

Mark

I would strongly encourage all newer users of the Anglican Breviary, if they
have not done so, to take some quiet time and slowly read the rubrical
information from the editors found on the First Sunday in Advent. Lots of good
