New interview with featured artist Jodi Colella

/"For me it all starts with playing with material. A material will catch
my attention and I'll fiddle around to learn about it. I often discover
a quality that is interesting enough to keep working. Eventually it
becomes apparent to me what needs to be expressed, although sometimes it
doesn't. It's all about experimentation and letting go. It sounds funny,
but I learn by going, yet I have to go before I know where I'm
going....."/ Jodi Colella

Making the Art Seen New Online Profile: Susan Still Scott

Susan Still Scott conflates 2-D and 3-D imagery in chaotic assemblages
of painting parts and found materials, she combines, covers and paints
these unassuming objects, based on a sense of visual and structural
integrity.

Scott states, /"Pictorial abstraction and objecthood wrestle in my
paintings. As dual entities they have to compete and co-operate and
ultimately reconcile before I consider what I have in front of me
finished. Almost any object like a scrap of wood, a cardboard box or a
wire frame can replace the ubiquitous rectangular plane, confound the
very definition of it, and still be the foundation of a painting--- like
an umbilical to the wall...." /

*Transitions in Light*
*Holograms by Ron Zeheb*
Exhibition dates:January 13 – February 24, 2012
Opening reception: Friday, January 13, 5-7 pm
*The Elizabeth A. Beland Gallery at Essex Art Center is pleased to
present */Transitions in Light/,featuring holograms by Andover based
artist, Ron Zeheb. In a process that is often likened to “magic”,
holograms are created through the projecting of a special laser bean
that is split in two, with one beam illuminating the object that is to
be the subject of the hologram. The other beam shines directly on special
high resolution photographic emulsion. The light reflecting from the
object and the light shining directly on the emulsion interact with each
other in the same way that waves generated by a hand full of pebbles,
thrown onto a lake interact with each other. These waves are recorded on
the photographic emulsion as “fringes”.When a suitable source of light
is used to illuminate the hologram, the “fringes” act like a very
complex diffraction, bending and reflecting the light to reconstruct an
image of the object --- magic.
  From artist, Ron Zeheb’s statement:
I was enchanted by the magic of holography way back in the 1960’s when,
as a teenager, I had the opportunity to see some of the very first
holograms ever made for artistic display. Holography was technically
difficult and, in those days, out of the reach of mere mortals.
Advances in both technology and the understanding of what’s required to
make a hologram have now made it possible for me to use this medium for
my own artistic expression. I cannibalized equipment, invested in
lasers and combined my interest in technology with art.
My holograms include compositions of objects that reveal my interest in
nature, geology, and sometimes humor. I am fascinated by the possible
color shifts, and three dimensional qualities of holograms. The rigorous
attention to detail required when making holograms provides a continuous
challenge, something I enjoy.
Like a moth to flame the laser light calls to me. I have been ensnared
by the challenge as well as the seemingly endless ways to express myself
with light.

located in downtown New Bedford, is pleased to present the exhibition:

MARK GOODWIN: WANDERLUST

The exhibition of recent paintings and drawings will be on view from
February 9 through March 11.

The Opening Reception will be on AHA! Night, February 9, from 6:00 --
9:00 PM

The artists will give a presentation on his work in the Lecture Hall at
7:00 PM

The drawings and paintings, the visual objects, by Mark Goodwin are
enigmatic and beautiful. Based on process and investigation, and on
skill, material, and chance, they have a sculptural and poetic
sensibility. They are at the same time both intimate and foreign.

To begin with folds and marks are imprinted from the back into the flat
surface of the paper or canvas. An initial topography is created which,
when the work is turned over, is further explored and developed with
paint applied to the surface. As the work takes form, the image is
repeatedly scraped and sanded, erased and revealed, as new layers of
paint are applied, and new marks are imprinted from behind.

For Goodwin, the surface of his work is a place of encounters between
diverging impulses; an investigation that leads toward vaguely
remembered states of mind and possible new states of being. They also
exude a strong sense of presence, asking for the viewer's participation.
The work beckons the eyes, while offering up clues for rumination.

The work brings to mind aspects of Jorge Luis Borges' story, "A Weary
Man's Utopia," in which the narrator, for unknown reasons, is visiting a
distant future and enters a tall man's house "after riding down a road
across a plain." He notices a water clock on the table and, while
speaking to the man in Latin, picks up a book and opens it at random.
The letters, he writes, "were clear and indecipherable and written by
hand." Their angular lines reminded him of"the runic alphabet."

During the visit he sees a wall hung with rectangular paintings, and is
able to partially make out some of the imagery. They had, he writes,
"something of the infinite about it." It turns out they are painted by
the tall man, and he gives the visitor one of them. The narrator then
writes: "The other canvases disturbed me. I will not say they were
blank, but almost blank." The tall man, perhaps sensing his unease, says
to him: "They are painted with colors that your ancient eyes cannot see."

The narrator returns to the present and, in his study, hangs "the canvas
that someone will paint, thousands of years from now, with substances
that are now scattered across the planet."

The story is a testimony to the power and unknown qualities of the
visual language and of the written and spoken language. Like Mark
Goodwin's paintings, there is simultaneously a past, a present, and a
future. As human beings, as ancient tribes, and as future generations,
we try to divine the presence of the gods and try to see the lines of
our individual fate. We test the limits of our presence, our
consciousness, and our being. We are traversed by stories, events, and
landscapes; our presence is a living canvas, a surface constantly
written and re-written.

The University Art Gallery is located at 715 Purchase Street, New
Bedford, MA 02740. We are open seven days a week from 9:00 AM -- 6:00
PM. All exhibitions and events are free and open to the public.

It's an apocalyptic, sci-fi, steampunk collaboration between
experimental theater company Liars Believers
<http://www.liarsandbelievers.com> and the steamCRUNK band Walter

"This album is a keeper because, even considered apart from their
context, the songs are not only idiosyncratically gorgeous but often
brilliantly splendid. I point to deeply affecting laments like 'M Is for
Martyr,' 'Porcelain Heads' and the sad-to-antic 'Gone In a Flash.' And
to emotionally wrenching numbers such as 'Glass Guillotine' and
'Wintermission.' And, best of all (never has a xylophone been used to
better effect), to the invigorating and frantically descriptive classic
'The Sky Is Falling.'. " - (Francis DiMenno - The Noise

They garnish their ominous doom-folk with the theatricality of a demonic

Reinventing small, older industrial cities for the 21st century requires
sizeable public intervention, but these so-called 'gateway' cities lack the
political capital to draw sufficient public investment. MassInc research
director Benjamin Forman is our guest speaker when the Placemaking Network meets
on February 27 at noon at BSA Space (290 Congress Street, Boston). He will
describe new placemaking policy opportunities around which effective political
alliances can be built, providing design leaders with new openings to envision a
radically different future for these vital urban centers. Meetings are free and
open to all. Lunch will be provided to those who RSVP by 9:30 am on the day of
the meeting torsvp@... with "Place 02/27" in the subject line.

Athan’s European Bakery & Café in Brookline continues its tradition of
presenting outstanding regional visual artists by presenting the art
exhibition *Marian Dioguardi “La Dolce Vita”**.*This is a vibrant and
thoughtful exhibition featuring Newton artist Marian Dioguardi. In this
exhibition, Marian uses her trademark bold and brilliant color schemes
to present her vision of “the sweet life” or “La Dolce Vita”.Her
Italo-American heritage from East Boston pervades her oil paintings as
she presents seemingly simple Italian street scenes from the Island of
Burano in the Venetian Lagoon alongside equally colorful and oversized
ceramic plates, cups and saucers. She turns the static buildings, with
their strong blocks and rectangles, into real home scenes by including
very realistic laundry lines full of everyday articles of clothing.
There is mystery and suspense to go along with well-deserved comfort in
these scenes that represent the eloquence and formality of the past. The
drying cloths on the lines, well positioned open windows and daunting
shadows bring real life to her paintings. Marian’s colorful dinnerware,
which flow with anticipated abundance, is very compelling when presented
alongside the buildings. Together they showcase a zest for life that is
so in keeping with Italian culture, food and living. Marian’s use of
color creates a stunning appreciation for life and the lives that flow
through her paintings. Viewers are drawn into these life stories through
her use of many symbols and questions. In the end Marian succeeds in her
main quest to just “paint life”.

through museum exhibitions, membership, videos and an informative web
site: www.obeast.org
Among her roles in the project, Herrick is performing as the North
American Obeast, a fictitious genus of endangered mammals. From her
artist statement: By dehumanizing obesity and re-casting it as the
obeast, I exaggerate the everyday stigmatization of fat people to the
extent that it becomes humorous rather than merely requiring the
viewer’s pity. The detailed absurdity of the world of the obeast
temporarily disarms and de-personalizes this controversial topic,
creating emotional space for viewers to consider the inequalities
perpetuated by the hegemonic ideal of the “normal” body.
Since its unveiling last spring, The Museum for Obeast Conservation
Studies (MOCS) has been nominated for a 2011 New England Art Award, a
contest organized by The New England Journal for Aesthetic Research, to
honor the best art made here, local writing about local art, and
exhibits of New England art organized here in 2011. The project has been
showcased on Jezebel.com, NPR, Stylus, and many academic journals, and
blogs.
Rachel Herrick (b. 1979) is an artist who creates satirical work about
fat stigma and ascribed social identity. Herrick’s pseudo-scientific
museum exhibitions document the field of study around the North American
Obeast, a genus of mammals she invented to satirize fat bias and the
cultural panic surrounding the obesity epidemic. Her installation-based
work spans a wide variety of media including sculpture, video,
photography and performance. Herrick is based in North Carolina and has
exhibited throughout the US. Her work can be found in the collections of
the William Penn Foundation, Comcast Headquarters, the NC Bar
Association, and the American Council on Exercise. Herrick received her
MFA from the Maine College of Art and a BA in Writing from Methodist
University.

Starting in September 2012, the Somerville Arts Council will name a new Artist
of the Month each month---and we need your help. We hope you'll nominate
someone!

Nomination form: http://somervilleartscouncil.org/artistmonth

All artists who are nominated must live, work, or volunteer in
Somerville, MA. We hope you will help us out by nominating someone whose
  work you admire!

SAC's Artist of the Month program is a way for us to celebrate the enormous
wealth of talent in our city, by shining a spotlight on a different creative
Somervillian each month. This program is put together by Coordinators Jenn
Harrington and Kellie Veiga, and SAC board member Tim Devin. It is inspired by
the Nave Gallery's "Featured Artist" program, which ran from 2005 to 2009.
