The Artist Abroad
Fighting the Good Fight
By Luis H.  Francia

NEW YORK—I doubt if we’ll see his face on billboards anytime
soon, endorsing commercial products. He won’t ever be the subject of
tabloid fantasies and speculation, for what he does isn’t sexy or
sensationalistic or dramatic. No bone-crunching knockout blows are delivered, no title belts are
claimed, no multimillion-dollar payoffs, just the satisfaction of
seeing a child’s face light up when nerve endings and brain synapses
connect so that for the first time a young mind begins to understand
heretofore indecipherable symbols as a coherent language.
For the first time, a young hand can put pen or pencil to paper and
render thoughts and feelings into something others can read. The most
magical moment in a child’s life occurs, in other words, when he or she
starts to read and to write—a magical moment those of us whose parents
were able to send us to school usually take for granted.

The world of literature, of history, of science, of any of the
fields of human endeavor that have been recorded, commented upon, or
dreamed about and set in black and white, opens up, and the
possibilities of self-transcendence loom. I can’t imagine how poor and
dreary the world would be without the ability to read books,
newspapers, postcards, or just the daily signage needed to navigate the
modern world. You don’t need to read and write in order to dream, but
they can bring you closer to realizing those dreams.

Last week, CNN honored a 28-year-old unassuming Filipino by the name
of Efren Peñaflorida as one of its Heroes of 2009. These individuals
were so honored for their accomplishments in various fields, whether
this was in providing shelter for homeless war veterans or counseling
Zimbabwean women who had been raped, most often as the result of war.
In Efren’s case, he was acclaimed for providing basic literacy
skills to children in the slums, an environment he knows intimately,
having been raised in one himself, in Cavite, as the son of a tricycle
driver and a housewife. As an honoree he received $25,000. As the
honoree of honorees (there were 10 all told), he received $100,000. He
says most of the monies will be used to build a learning center, with
10 percent going to the Christian group that sponsors his outfit.

Since 1997, Peñaflorida and his Dynamic Teen Company, made up of
teen volunteers have created a literacy program for slum children based
on what they term the four K’s: Kariton, Klasrum, Klinik, at Kantin. In
addition to imparting basic reading and writing skills, the team
conducts classes in hygiene and nutrition. Their main tool: a pushcart classroom. Stocked with books, pens,
tables and chairs, the lowly kariton re-creates a school setting in
unconventional locations such as the cemetery and/or the municipal
trash dump. Every Saturday he and his volunteers, most from the same
impoverished backgrounds, bring their pushcart to where the children,
ranging from the ages of 2 to 14, are, lighting candles in the dark.

Peñaflorida’s story is the classic tale of rags to riches, only in
this case, it isn’t material riches we’re talking about, but the
richness of doing something concrete and ennobling, as well as
enabling, for others. In an interview, Peñaflorida said he refused to
let the circumstances of poverty define his future. He resisted
pressure to join a gang—commonly accepted in poor areas as a way to
survive the street, with its unforgiving dog-eat-dog creed. That is
when he decided, along with some friends, to offer slum kids an
alternative to hanging out with local toughs and eventually being
caught up in petty crime, drug addiction, and a life that offered
mobility only in the sense of moving around in circles—and getting
nowhere fast.

This seeming quixotic endeavor would have won Peñaflorida
encouragement and approval from Dr. José Rizal, whose martyrdom we
celebrate every December 30th. Rizal, as we all know, was shot by a
vindictive Spanish colonial state for his searing critiques of the
abuses of power, most especially as wielded by the friars, and
dramatized in his two novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. The
Spanish overlords would have loved nothing more than that no Indio
could read such incendiary works.

Ginoong Rizal always stressed the virtues of education.
This is evident in the Noli, when the rather naïve and wealthy
mestizo Crisostomo Ibarra decides to finance the building of a
schoolhouse in his hometown of San Diego, an endeavor Padre Damaso
scoffs at. The pot-bellied cleric favors a combination of rote learning
(mostly of the cathecism) and the lash, where the classroom rather than
being a setting for learning becomes a venue to be dreaded. When the
local school maestro tries to change the way the town children are
taught, Damaso very quickly cuts him down.. The teacher complains to
Ibarra:

"What could I do? I barely have my salary. To get it I have to remain
in the priest’s good offices and make a trip to the head of the
province, what could I do against him, the town’s main moral,
political, and civil authority, supported by his order, feared by the
government, rich, powerful, consulted, listened to, believed, heeded
everywhere by everyone? If he insults me I have to hold my tongue. If I
answer back, he’ll throw me out and my career will be over. How will
that help education? On the contrary everyone will side with the
priest, they’ll insult me, they’ll call me vain, proud, preening, a bad
Christian, vulgar, and even anti-Spanish and a subversive. They don’t
expect knowledge or enthusiasm from a schoolmaster. They just want
resignation, humility, inertia." (Penguin edition, trans. Harold Augenbraum)

No doubt Efren Peñaflorida’s humble enterprise initially earned him
the mockery of latter-day Damasos, cynics, and know-it-alls. The odds,
of course, against a child born and raised in the Dickensian squalor of
a slum neighborhood growing up to be an educated, economically
self-sufficient, and empowered adult are seemingly insurmountable.
Despair, anger, and frustration constitute a formidable three-headed
monster slum dwellers must contend with on a daily basis—a monster even
the more privileged citizens confront because of the endemic resistance
in the political sphere to genuine democratic reforms. Thus, seen by
itself, Peñaflorida’s endeavor is indeed quixotic. Consider the straits
public education is in.

Formal learning is clearly not a priority of the current Philippine
government. In 1957, the percentage of the national budget allotted for
education was more than 31 percent. By 1987, this stood at 15.5
percent. For 2009, the Arroyo administration’s education budget
amounted to little more than 11 percent —only 2 percent of the
country’s GDP, less than the average 3.3 percent in other Asian
countries. The 2010 allocation, yet to be approved, increases the item
to approximately 12 percent but this is still among the lowest in Asia,
just a third of what the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and
Cultural Organization (UNESCO) deems the minimum necessary to maintain
educational standards.

According to the Alliance of Concerned Teachers, the shortages of
teachers, classrooms, and other necessary facilities, such as
libraries, grows worse every year. Four hundred forty-five villages
have no elementary schools, while six municipalities have no high
schools. As a result of inadequate public monies, educational standards
are slipping. National achievement tests for 2004-05, for instance,
showed that high school seniors averaged 46.8 percent, while Grade Six
pupils scored on the average 58.73 percent.

It used to be that we could point with pride to the high levels of
education and literacy in the country, and while the private sector has
institutions that offer top drawer education, only a privileged
minority are able to afford the tuition and other expenses that such
schooling demands. Government funding for state universities and
colleges, including the world-renowned University of the Philippines,
keeps being cut. This coming year alone, such cuts will total more than
P3 billion.

Yes, what Peñaflorida and his volunteers are undertaking is very
much a drop in the bucket, but they set an example, along with
countless others in the private sector, that the way forward for 2010,
nay, for all the coming years—the one resolution we can all make—is to
be a catalyst for change, with whatever means are at our command. We
need to be like the grandparents in an old Greek story who planted
trees whose shade they would never enjoy but whose children and
grandchildren would.

CHRISTMAS & NEW YEAR CHALLENGE

Before you totally get lost in the merriment this holiday season, you might want to have a go at these three challenges we’re posing to all Pinoys.

CHALLENGE # 1 - 1 kilogram (2.2 lbs) maximum weight gain

With endless partying and get-togethers left and right, it’s fairly easy to overstuff yourself and putting on weight is the order of the season.  It really doesn’t make sense, foolish even, to overindulge during the last two or three weeks of the year only to spend the next 11 months desperately trying to lose the unwanted pounds – if you’re going to lose it at all.  Challenge yourself to keep weight gain to a minimum – 1 kilogram or 2.2 lbs should be a reasonable target.

Avoid eating too much.  Kung gusto mong tikman lahat ng pagkain na nakahanda, pwede pa rin naman basta pa konti-konti lang.  Reduce consumption or don’t eat rice especially if you’ll be washing down your meal with several bottles of beer or wine.  (3 bottles of SMB has more calories than a cheeseburger).  If you can’t help eating more than your usual fill find time to burn the extra calories.  Mag-jogging o mag-brisk walking ng 1 oras the next day.

It’s hard to manage what you don’t know. So, buy yourself a weighing scale and monitor your weight everyday.  Kung napapansin mo na araw-araw tumataas ang iyong timbang then eat less and exercise more.

CHALLENGE #2 - Minimum 20% leftover from bonus

If this challenge is already too late then just read on for next year.  Every December most people have plenty of extra cash, from their 13th month pay and bonuses.   It’s not unusual for some to have 3 to 4 times more money in December than in any other month of the year.  Pero nakakalungkot na madalas pagdating ng January, kahit anino ng pera na ‘to wala ka nang makita.

Besides overeating, Pinoys tend to overspend during the holiday season.  Siguro dahil feeling more generous ka kapag mas marami kang pera.  Before you start planning get-togethers and buying gifts take a moment to draft a plan on how you will spend your money.  Kung bili ka lang nang bili na hindi na masyadong nag-iisip baka bisperas pa lang ng Pasko ubos na ang pera mo.   Make a list of all the things you intend to buy or pay for and set a limit for each item.  Bago ka gumawa ng listahan itabi mo muna ang 20% (o higit pa) ng iyong 13th month pay at bonus at huwag mo na itong isama sa budget sa pamimili.

Remember to be more prudent in using your credit card so you don’t have to spend the next 6 to 12 months (or years) worrying about how you can pay your credit card debt.   Ilista lahat ng expenses whether binayaran in cash or charged sa credit card para mamonitor ang ginagastos.

If you spend smartly this Christmas and New Year you can have some savings and still be generous.  If you have to, make changes to your planned activities and/or find cheaper alternatives for gifts so that the money left after stashing away 20% in savings will suffice.

CHALLENGE #3 - Start 2010 with clear goals

The New Year gives us an opportunity for a fresh start and yet another chance to accomplish something significant.  However, if you don’t know what you’re aiming at then you’re not likely to accomplish anything.  So begin 2010 with a clear set of goals.

Huwag mo masyadong damihan ang iyong gustong matupad ngayong bagong taon at baka wala kang matupad.  Because the more goals you have, the less focused you will be.   I suggest you just list 3 to 5 important goals for 2010.  If you accomplish them all with still plenty of time to spare then add more targets.  At sana ang number 1 resolution mo ngayong 2010 ay sundin ang nilista mong goals.

If you have an existing long-term goal, include in your list a sub-goal that will lead to the accomplishment of this bigger target.  For example if you want to accumulate P5 million by the time you reach 60, your sub-goal for 2010 could be to save P100,000.

Here’s my list of top priority goals for 2010.

1. Write and publish my 2nd book

2. Run the marathon

3. Organize my stuff (i.e. update documents/records, catalog books, videos, CDs, etc.)

4. Visit at least 5 provinces I haven’t been to (ultimate goal is to visit all Philippine provinces)

If you want to share your personal goals for 2010 please feel free to email me and let’s encourage each other towards accomplishing these goals.

Maraming salamat po and may you have a blessed Christmas and a prosperous & productive 2010.

CJ Andaluz revisits his roots

Independent filmmaker Christopher John Andaluz returned to his first love,
theater, with the successful restaging of Frank G. Rivera's modern zarzuela
"Ambon, Ulan, Baha" last December 13 at SM Centerpoint Cinema 5.

Andaluz was back on the helm of Rivera's 2004 Aliw Awards Best Musical
Production after directing the short film "Nekro" and the full-length feature
"Sisa" for OnCam Productions.

"Ambon, Ulan, Baha" is another production of Alab Artistika and Pixel Art Media
Production Co. based on Rivera's play aside from "Tao, Isang Tagulaylay" and
"Oyayi."

Andaluz earlier dipped his hands in directing films with "Nekro," which won best
narrative short film in the first Pambujan Pelikula Para sa Publiko (PPPP)
National Short Film Festival and Competition held in Northern Samar and also
competed in the Lyons Asian Film Festival in France, Exground Film Festival in
Germany, Third Eye Asian Film Festival Mumbai in India, and .MOV International
Digital Film Festival in Manila.

His short film, which tells the story of a man who fulfills his sexual urges by
having sex with the dead, was also part of the Short Wave program of the 7th
World Film Festival of Bangkok and the selection of the 16th Filipino American
Cine (FACINE) Festival in San Francisco last month.

Meanwhile, "Sisa" competed in the Digital Lokal competition of Dekada Cinemanila
last year with Jodi Sta. Maria-Lacson bagging the Best Actress award in the
international film festival.

28 prizes presented for acting and cinematic excellence

The sixth edition of Dubai International Film Festival concluded on Wednesday
night with a glittering award ceremony that honoured the finest acting and
cinematic talent from the Arab world, Asia and Africa at the Muhr Arab and Muhr
AsiaAfrica awards.

In all, 28 prizes were distributed for excellence in acting, cinematography,
editing, music and scriptwriting in addition to the jury general excellence
awards. The entries were from more than 62 nations across Asia, Africa, the
Americas, Australia and Europe in three categories -documentaries, short films
and feature films.

DIFF received more than 900 entries from the Arab world, Asia and Africa for
over US$575,000 in prize money, in addition to the acclaim of a prestigious
international jury. The Muhr Arab competition, open to directors of Arab
nationality or origin, drew around 437 entries, while the Muhr AsiaAfrica
competition, currently in its second year, received over 513 entries.

DIFF Artistic Director Masoud Amralla Al Ali said the strong participation of
films, documentaries and shorts for the Muhr Arab and Muhr AsiaAfrica awards was
matched by impressive creativity and technical finesse. "The increased
participation and the quality of participating films underscores the fact that
DIFF has helped drive regional talent in cinema, offering filmmakers in the Arab
world, Asia and Africa a definitive platform to showcase their creativity."

The winners of `Movies in Motion,' an innovative pan-Arab talent contest for
budding filmmakers in the Middle East organised by MBC, were also awarded. The
third prize winner was Diab Ghazi; the second prize went to Dani Hasecic and the
first prize was won by Mohammed Al Badri. Ouail Mohammed won the People's
Choice Award in the 2-minute movie competition that received 550 entries.

DIFF 2009 has partnered with the Human Rights Film Network a partnership of
human rights film festivals around the world. Established in Prague in 2004, the
Network promotes exchange, communication and collaboration regarding the
representation of human rights issues in moving pictures. Merzak Allouache for
HARRAGAS (Algeria) won the inaugural DIFF Human Rights Film Network Award,
selected from 10 movies that best depicted the human rights themes.

The International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI), the foremost body of
film writers, academics and critics from over 60 countries, presents the annual
`Prize of the International Critics' for Arab films screened at DIFF. The winner
of the award for the best feature film in the Muhr Awards for Excellence in Arab
Cinema goes to Merzak Allouache for HARRAGAS (Algeria) for its complexity in
depicting one of the most serious human problems of the Third World: The
emigration. This year FIPRESCI also introduces an award for best shorts in Muhr
Arab Awards, which was clinched by Mohammad Aldhahri for SHROUQ/GHROUB
(SUNRISE/SUNSET) (Saudi Arabia) for its simple strong style and courageous
approach of the undercurrent problems that a young boy facing in our society.

The People Choice Award for 2009 was clinched by Zeina Daccache for the
documentary 12 Angry Lebanese.

Emirati talent was highlighted at DIFF when three awards were presented at the
closing ceremony. The prize for Best Emirati talent went to Mohammed Hassan
Ahmad; the Most Promising Emirati female filmmaker was Manal Bin Amro and Most
Promising Emirati filmmaker was Nawaf Al Janahi.

Muhr AsiaAfrica Feature Jury Chairman Bahman Farmanara said: "Judging is not an
easy process, especially in art, where creativity is defined by the artists'
personal discretions and considerations. But it becomes immensely difficult, and
I must say very pleasing, when the quality of films selected by the organizers
of the festival is outstanding. Then the whole process becomes rewarding."

He added: "This was what my fellow jury members, Manisha Koirala, , Jean-Micheal
Frodon, Keith Shiri, Noureddin Lakhmari and I experienced when evaluating the
Muhr AsiaAfrica short-list. The quality of works was extremely encouraging and
prompts us to look forward to watching good, powerful films emerge from these
two territories in the future."

Muhr AsiaAfrica Documentaries Jury Chairman Budhadeb Dasgupta said: "The films
shown in the competition section of Muhr AsiaAfrica Documentary Awards
represented varied cultures of different countries of contemporary relevance. It
was not easy for us to find the best three from amongst the twelve films
addressing different issues, starting from challenges faced by man to political
problems."

"The Muhr Arab documentary jury thanks the Dubai International Film Festival and
all participating filmmakers for the unique opportunity to watch such a wide and
interesting range of films from the Arab world," said Jury Chairman Omar
Amiralay. "The films had powerful themes of immediate and topical importance.
Yet, they often lacked true cinematic treatment and a well-rounded perspective
two key facets that are extremely important to deliver compelling
documentaries."

He added: "Some films were indeed passionate about their themes. There was a
sincere effort and true determination to bring about change and reform but we
believe that only a genuinely artistic engagement can deliver an engaging,
moving and powerful film experience."

The traditional methods of movie distribution are giving way to new and exciting
hybrid models that present filmmakers with exciting opportunities, delegates
attending DIFF 2009 heard this week.

The Industry Panel: "Distribution in Motion" was attended by Scillla Andreen
from IndieFlix; Ryan Kampe, from Visit Films, and Andy Whittaker, representing
Dogwoof, and moderated by Elizabeth Radshaw from Hot Docs.

Scilla Andreen said IndieFlix offers filmmakers a "multi-platform distribution",
with the chance to capitalise on up to nine distinct revenue streams, while
keeping hold of their rights. "We are the new model I think we will become the
new standard."

She noted how the profile of the internet has changed from a place of anonymity
to one of transparency "although the reality is that in online distribution,
there's not a tonne of money right now. We are all still trying to figure it
out."

Getting films out to audiences is naturally critical, and for Andreen, that
means not being afraid to combine old and new ways of thinking. "We started
showing films in local Starbucks outlets sometimes we would get 110 people
showing up," she said. "Just carry a clipboard with you it sounds so
elementary and free, but it's very effective."

Ryan Kampe said Visit Films, a North American general sales agent, works with
filmmakers the world over, from Iceland and Argentina, to Serbia and Singapore.
He said regional filmmakers had to decide whether to make films for the Arab
diaspora, or those which will only appeal to the art house or festival crowd.
"Ultimately distributors are looking for films which will get to a number of
people," he said. "The test should be `will a guy in Norway watch my film?'"

Andy Whittaker works for London-based Dogwoof, specialists in social issue-led
film distribution, be it food industry themes or climate change, with strong

heard at the Cultural Bridge panel," he said.

During the question and answer session, Soniya Kirpalani from Sprocket Science,
relayed her positive experiences, as someone who knew little about the industry
a year ago, and has now secured a number of deals and tapped into funding
opportunities. "There's lots of hope for newcomers."

SYNOPSIS:

Marlon is the iconic story of a 17-year-old blind teenager who looks like a 10-year-old boy. His blissful innocence brightens his bleak fate brought about by his disability and his family's miseries. The film starts with his great desire for knowledge. He wants to go to school despite the suspension of classes in all levels caused by a coup d'etat threat to the national government on February 24, 2005. Marlon's mother is subservient to her child's needs. She believes God is punishing her with his condition because she attempted to get rid of him in birth. She gives up her entire life taking care of him.

Marlon's family is also grieving over the death of his eldest brother who gets killed by a bully, a son of a local official. His father continues to pursue the criminal case against the suspect despite the sluggishness and inanities of the rural court. At times, he could understand the proceedings which are usually conducted in the English language.

Marlon's ultimate dream is to become a school teacher for the visually impaired. Nothing can stop him from pursuing this dream, not poverty, or his family's tragedies; and not even people's apathy. As he usually says, he is not blind, he just winks a lot. He may not see the world for all its beauty and its tragedy, but in his mind he vividly perceives the brightness of day with the sound of his infectious laughter. He can hear the weary mundane noises with his imminent sense of affect. His unwavering faith in the Divine through his resilient songs and prayers has clearly defined his undying hope and zest for life. Written by cinemanila
