Subject: How to create eBooks in ePub format?

Hi, Everyone.

Here's my first dumb question of the day (it's still early):  If some small,
impecunious publisher wannabe (me) would like to create and disseminate reports,
monthly newsletters, and eBooks in ePub format, what are the options?  What
software is required?  Is it better to first create the document in, say, a
wordprocessor, then convert it to ePub format, or create the document natively
in ePub?

As you've already guessed, I'm clueless about how to actually create documents
in ePub format.

TIA for any enlightenment you can provide.

First you need to learn the difference between POD printers and POD
publishers (stay away from the POD publishers), then visit
http://lightningsource.com

If you only want Amazon distribution visit http://createspace.com (but don't
selection their expanded distribution as they use Lightning Source for this,
so go straight to them).

Hope everyone had a great holiday.

This is my first book and I don't know what I can or can't say. I have gotten
a release from people if I use their information and name.

1. Can I copy an incoming email to me and use it in the book? I'm not using
anyone's real name in the entire book without their permission. If I can't use
it forbad en, can I rephrase it but have the same info? I don't know how the
internet works as far as protection. I know I can't copy any info on someone's
website as they own that copyright, but I don't know about emails.

2. Can I include a problem I had with a Vet? I'm not using their real name and
not giving any description as to their actual location. (i.e. The Vet caused my
dog's neck to swell)

Thanks for any help you can provide.

I see that if my book is in the Kindle store, which it is, I can send hardcopies
to Amazon and they will fulfill orders for hardcopy books along with the Kindle
offering. So I guess I can have some printed and then send them there. Has
anyone tried this?

I say again, who *are* they? Who do they represent? What authority, if
any, do they have? Is this "code of practice" just a suggestion, or is
it something that the industry is expected to follow? Are there
repercussions if people don't follow it?

I've never heard of them, and would like to know more about the
significance of this declaration.

E-Books Poised to Challenge Paper Books in Schools

It will be some time before traditional text books are no longer the norm
in classroom, educators said, but their replacement by digital versions
such as e-books is looming on the horizon.

"That is the future," said Superintendent of Schools Sidney Freund. "We
used to talk about kids with backpacks carrying 40 or 50 pounds of books.
Now they're carrying compact discs."

Digital formats like e-books allow students to read books on a variety of
platforms, from mobile e-readers such as Kindle that store hundreds of
titles, to laptop and desktop computers, to interactive classroom tools
like Smartboards.

Embedded features such as streaming video and audio clips, as well as
quick-look reference guides, can enhance the learning experience,
educators said.

"Because you can bring in such different elements, you can really make
(the lesson) come alive" with e-books and Smartboards, said Fran Kompar,
district coordinator for library and media services.

School officials are now looking at the possibility of replacing paper
books with electronic versions that they said would save money and allow
students to get more up-to-date information.

A judge ordered Google to pay 300,000 euros to a French publisher, plus

A Paris court on Friday ruled that Google violated French copyright law in
digitizing books, but it;s unlikely the decision will be the last word on
the search engine's controversial book-scanning project.

A judge ordered Google to pay 300,000 euros, or roughly $430,000, in
damages to French publisher La Martiniere, which pursued the case on
behalf of a group of publishers, The Associated Press reported.

<snip>

Google on Friday said it planned to appeal the ruling.

"We disagree with the judge's decision and will appeal the judgement,"
Google spokeswoman Gabriel Stricker, said in an e-mail sent to Information
"We believe that displaying a limited number of short extracts from books
complies with copyright legislation both in France and the U.S. -- and
improves access to books."

I found this article interesting:
http://www.sfwa.org/for-authors/writer-beware/pod/

Basically, because the unit cost of printing a single book each
time versus a print run, it is likely that it will be too expensive.

I was keen on the idea of print on demand, but there is no shortage
of companies ready to take your money because the vast majority
of people who do it sell so few this way.

Is there a way to work with a one-off printing company so people can order a

one-off printer who will print and mail the order and then I pay the printer?
Thanks,

I'm not sure this says anything new, but it does, at least, give a guidance that
will be valuable if generally followed.

BIC Code Of Practice For The Identification Of E-books

Forget it. There is no security that isn't already broken or won't be
withing a few weeks, at best. There is no such thing as a "secure" e-book,
DRM included or not. Worse...

Everything you do hacks someone off and makes readers less likely to
purchase your book. Things DRM does to hack people off or make the book less
useful?

1. Depending on the DRM, users cannot use the purchased book on his/her
reader of choice. The file may be tied to the machine it was downloaded on
and unable, for instance, to be used on the handheld reader the reader
prefers.

2. Advantages of e-books are stripped away, depending on DRM. Those
advantages may include: having the program read the book aloud (popular with
vision impaired readers), backups of the files in case of catastrophic loss
of computer or handheld reader, and others.

3. Since DRM doesn't work, the only people it inconveniences are the honest
ones. Why are we treating the honest readers like thieves and setting up an
adversarial relationship? Those readers who have this mindset will avoid
DRMd books, which cuts our audience.

4. According to Fictionwise back in 2004 (and reiterated by several other
resellers since then), DRM causes 10 times the customer service calls
unsecured e-books do. Each reader who has a problem with secured files are
10 times less likely to purchase secured copies again. Anything that makes
e-books harder to use is likely to turn readers away.

5. Increased price. Why are we paying more for something that doesn't work?
Why are readers paying more to be treated like thieves and have less
advantages to the books?

Your choice, but there's a reason many of the music sites have stopped using
DRM, and there's a reason NY conglomerates are now attempting to follow the
indie model of no DRM on e-books.

What would you suggest for ebook security?

I have deliberately bought a few different ebooks in
different formats to check user experience, and by far the
best I found is a simple .pdf with or without setting a
simple password (easily circumvented). There are non
transferable/non printing versions which I guess are most
secure but the difficulty of use will put people off. It
puts me off buying more of them like this. I can't copy
some to a hard drive for safety.

I suppose you can offset the loss of income from pirated
copies against the lack of sales you might make from
producing the ebook in a harder-to-use format. Plus, if
people want it and your name and product is getting a wider
audience, it means more people know about your stuff. Could
this be a good thing if you produce more or eventually go
for conventional publishing-armed with experience from the
ebook side.

Why don't you use Open Office to make your pdf (free)

Start with a basic domain and hosting (I can recommend one)

Use the free paypal shopping cart to take ebook orders

Set up a download page with a few basic security tags

And go from there. I can help if you want

Hi All,

I'm still writing my book but did a test run using Primo http://www.primopdf
.com/index. aspx

My document is typed in "word". It was easy to convert but it didn't allow me to
open the hyperlinks. I went back to all my "useful resources" and typed in the
url. That worked and when you click on the url, it takes you to the website
really quickly.

I'm a little confused regarding the "steps of creating ebook". Why do you have
to go through all those steps if the software such as Primo converts the
document?

I called godaddy.com re: websites. I was first told "godaddy night" for $56/yr
would work. I could download the pdf and set up a paypal account. Today I
called to order it, but am now told I also need to have another website
"shopping cart" $113/yr. He said if I had "godaddy night", people could
download the book for free. I would need both "night" and "shopping cart" for
what I want to do. I would also like people to send in their stories, videos &
pictures.

I don't know how they could download the ebook from "godaddy night" if I have a
paypal account. After the reader pays for it, they will receive the ebook.
Again, I'm confused.

My friend just suggested youpublish.com (free). Do you know anything about
them?

Thanks a bunch!

Sandi

What this is missing is distribution. I've seen the difference it makes. In
addition to selling on your own site, I'd sell on Amazon DTP and on
Smashwords (which allows it also to sell on Sony and B&N). I MIGHT
additionally choose to sell on Lulu in e-book, though that's last on my
list.

Why not try Smashwords? Everything you need and they do all the work for a

If you have Microsoft Word, you can download a PDF maker free and have it under
your 'Save As' options.

I use Mr Site which has websites for £30 a year including registering a domain
and a shopping cart.

You can set up a PayPal account and get the HTML of a buy button to accept
credit cards too.

Sandi

Hi

To flush out any formatting and just have pure text, I suggest a text
editor such as Notepad (on windows for free) or Note Tab Light
(http://www.notetab.com/).

It is free, but does not have a spell check-not a problem if you have
written it in Word or something. Just use Note Tab Light to strip
away formatting.

Just a thought
Regards

Stuart

You still have to turn off track changes and auto formatting/correcting
first...and you may screw up some special characters in the file that way,
but it's all fixable. Taking the extra steps with find/replace saves a lot
of time on the end side.

Of course, you will still have the tedium of applying your desired formatting
styles to the unformatted text. Which gives you another opportunity to make a
mess of it! :-)
