Myself and Julie Ellam of Room 108 are working with Greyfriars Recycling of Wood (GRoW) to help them develop their marketing strategy and online activities (website to be launched shortly).

A small social firm, GRoW take discarded church furniture and either refurbish it or make it into beautiful new handcrafted wooden products... the craftsmen and women volunteer on a drop in basis with GRoW and have often experienced homelessness, mental health or addiction issues.  They are supported by skilled craftsmen to develop new skills and build confidence and self esteem.

GRoW are holding a display of their work next Friday 11th June at The Lot in the Grassmarket from 5pm until 8pm and it would be great if you come along to have a look at the work and find out more about the project.

Do you have a space in your house that is just crying out for a beautiful refurbished pew?
Maybe you want to commission a fabulous bit of furniture out of reclaimed wood
Does your organisation give awards and plaques that could be made out of wood?

...or you might like a wee gift (even for yourself) such as a candleholders, wooden turned pens and bowls.

Would be lovely to see you there...pop in on your way home..

Subject: Climate9 News: Climate9 Trial to Start June 14th: Come One Come All!

Climate9 News www.climate9.com

June 1st 2010: All the Climate9 defendants were summoned to Aberdeen court today, and it has been decided that the trial begins on the 14 of June, in Aberdeen. The intermediary diet is on 7th June.

The court is open to the public and the presence shown in court demonstrates the breadth of support and relevance to wider issues of social justice. It would be brilliant to have numerous supporters, families and friends there. If we can help at all with logistics, please email us on info@... or call on Tel 075351 47478

Climate9 Defence Committee

What we want

We want the courts to drop all charges against the climate 9 and for the courts to pursue those causing climate injustices such as BAA, who are getting away with murdering our ecosystems, causing death and destruction in poor countries and misery for local people living near their Airports

We want to curb short haul flights – most destinations can be reached by rail, bus and ferry - stop airport expansion, stop aviation advertising, and take steps that ensure a just transition to sustainable jobs and transport

We want the police and the aviation industry to be as open, honest and accountable as we are, to stop scare tactics, lies and intimidation and start listening to people concerned about climate change

We want an end to government sponsorship of the aviation industry, currently subsidised by the UK taxpayer for £9 Billion a year, subsidies that benefit the wealthiest and that could be used for sustainable transport projects.

What we believe

Climate change is the gravest threat to human survival and the future of our planet and as such, corporations and institutions that continue to emit large volumes of CO2 are committing a crime. We believe that it is climate crimes that should be pursued by the courts and not the climate 9

That climate justice and climate defence are movements inextricably woven with community movements, initiatives and struggles, that forms a wide progressive movement that includes intergenerational justice movements, racial justice movements, global and local poverty struggles and social justice movements, public health and others

Subject: Climate 9 trial

Hi folks,

My name is Jimmy Kerr, one of the accused due to go on trial on Monday for the Aberdeen Airport action on March 3rd 2009.

Court Support

I have been asked to try and mobilise court support, a vital part of our defence.

Obviously support throughout the trial is very very important, so any time or any day that people can make it to Aberdeen between the 14th June till 28th June (or the end of trial)  is most welcome, but the The key dates that we would want most support are Monday 14th June. Aberdeen Sherriff Court. Assemble at 9am and Monday 21st June at Aberdeen Sherriff court assemble at 9am.

What to bring.

It was thought that a powerful way of getting across the point that climate change affects everyone, was to create a kind of message wall, like you see at any disaster area. Think of the messages at ground zero after 911 or the outside the tube stations in London. It would be good to have photographs too.

So what we would be looking for is any kind of personal photograph or any kind of photograph related to climate change o its effects or any aviation related picture. with some kind of message next to it or attached.

The idea is to create a powerful visual display and a rallying point for our supporters. Any other materials such as banners placards etc are obviously welcome too.

Logistics

Many of you are outside Aberdeen We really need your help and we can get you to Aberdeen if that is a problem. Could all potential supporters then, contact me please ASAP to help organise our support, travel arrangements etc. It is vital that we get this organised ASAP

Sir David King: oil extraction a threat to the future

Former UK chief scientific adviser says global oil resorces might in fact be drying up faster than many - including governments - have been led to believe.

"As early as 2015, oil production capacity is going to begin to be challenged in terms of meeting rising demand, particularly from continuing growth of the economies of China and India," Sir David commented at the press conference.

This leaves the world very little time to wean itself off oil, he said.

"As we meet the point where the demand and supply equation begins to get very close, once again we'll see oil prices go up. As they go up, the pressure grows on the international oil companies - Shell, BP, Exxon Mobil, Chevron, etc. - to develop oil reserves that are unconventional."

The world's poorest countries will be the first to suffer - but for Britain and the US it will also be difficult to cope, added the scientist.

BP release their statistical review of world energy in June every year. The 2010 data is now available. Here's a brief summary of fossil fuel production

Oil: Global oil consumption declined by 1.2 million b/d or 1.7%, the largest decline since 1982

Natural Gas: World natural gas consumption fell by 2.1%, the largest decline on record

Coal: Global coal consumption was flat in 2009, the weakest annual change since 1999

Primary Energy: World primary energy consumption fell by 1.1% in 2009, the first decline since 1982

I've attached a pdf file of world oil production. Colin Campbell, the man with perhaps the best database on oil production, predicted a peak in 2008.

Did world oil production peak in 2008? So far 2008 is the peak year, but only time will tell.

peak oil on Newsnight last night - http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/newsnight/. I got the link from a Telegraph article - the link was the only good thing in it (what did I expect!). I even had a look at some of the comments & contemplated commenting but then decided it really wasn't worth the trouble. Not the right attitude but I'm on a deadline! Article here (http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/jamesdelingpole/100042904/bow-down-to-peak-oil-says-bbcs-cthulu-worshipping-newsnight/) if anyone has more stamina than I do.

Despite the Telegraph guy's stupid summary of the interview with Jeremy Leggett & the CEO of Det Norske (Erik Haugane), it was a reasonable & civilised debate. To anyone who understands peak oil and, more importantly, net energy, they were kind of in agreement. Erik's main reason for not fearing peak oil lay in the availability of non-conventional oil. It might have gotten interesting if anyone had raised 'net energy'! The problem with non-conventionals is that they are harder to extract - therefore, the surplus of energy left from extracting them is less. No time to expand but will be doing so soon on my new blog!

FYI - BP's latest statistical review (http://www.bp.com/productlanding.do?categoryId=6929&contentId=7044622) apparently says there's 1.33 billion barrels left in proven reserves - enough for 46 years at 2009 rates of consumption. Newsnight also gave a breakdown of where that oil is around the world.

Hi all,

Friends who have worked together should celebrate too !   All welcome at an informal picnic.  Please bring food to share, preferably sourced locally.

Meet at noon on the grass in front of Hermitage House in the hermitage of Braid.  This requires a walk in- on paved track from Braid Road or by paths from Blackford duck pond  or Midmar allotments site , Observatory or even Braid Hills Road.  If possible come by bus , or walk !   If you come by car please do not park on Braid Road, narrow and bendy but up on Hermitage Drive   see map http://www.fohb.org/new/images/nature_trails.pdf   note House is marked as Visitor Centre

Please use your own judgment about the weather;  don't come if it is wet / cold - I do not expect to be responsible for saying it is on or it is cancelled, although probably I will take a walk into the Hermitage even if the weather is doubtful.

Just hope it is hot and sunny, but also bring midge repellant !   Looking forward to seeing lots of friends.

Johanna

Note a couple of people are still on this list who will no longer get notice of meetings - I thought you might consider a final social event.

I'd like to recommend the following additions to Mandy's almost comprehensive list of resources:-

Books

Oil Crisis by Colin J Campbell.  ISBN-10: 0906522390, ISBN-13: 978-0906522394
When I heard about peak oil I decided to look at the data myself and make my own mind up. Colin Campbell's book was amongst the first I read on the subject and is one of the best. Contains data on oil producing regions.

Confronting Collapse: The Crisis of Energy & Money in a Post Peak Oil World by Michael C. Ruppert. ISBN-10: 1603582649, ISBN-13: 978-1603582643. Michael C. Ruppert details the intricate connections between money and energy, including the ways in which oil shortages and price spikes triggered the economic crash that began in September 2008. Given oil's stranglehold on our economy and the reality of insufficient supplies, Ruppert argues that we are not, in fact, on the verge of economic recovery, but on the verge of complete collapse. The truth is not merely inconvenient. It is utterly devastating. But there is still hope. Ruppert outlines a plan of action that can break the U.S. and global economic addiction to oil in time to avoid social catastrophe - but only if we can overcome political inertia and the entrenched power of the energy interests.

Blackout: Coal, Climate and the Last Energy Crisis by Richard Heinberg. ISBN-10: 1905570201, ISBN-13: 978-1905570201. Coal fuels more than 30 per cent of UK electricity production, and about 50 per cent in the US, providing a significant portion of total energy output. China and India's recent ferocious economic growth has been based almost entirely on coal-generated electricity. Coal currently looks like a solution to many of our fast-growing energy problems. However, while coal advocates are urging us full steam ahead, the increasing reliance on this dirtiest of all fossil fuels has crucial implications for energy policy, pollution levels, the global climate, world economy and geopolitics. Drawbacks to a coal-based energy strategy include: Scarcity - new studies suggest that the peak of world coal production may actually be less than two decades away; Cost - the quality of produced coal is declining, while the expense of transportation is rising, leading to spiralling costs and increasing shortages; and, Climate impacts - our ability to deal with the historic challenge of climate change may hinge on reducing coal consumption in future years. "Blackout" goes to the heart of the tough energy questions that will dominate every sphere of public policy throughout the first half of this century. It is critical reading for planners, educators and anyone concerned about energy security, oil depletion and climate change.

Films

Collapse: see books above and http://www.collapsemovie.com/
Not seen it yet, but apparently available on video from 15th June. Not sure if this is going to be available in the UK.

Websites

Industry Task Force on Peak Oil and Energy Security http://peakoiltaskforce.net/
You can download their report - well worth reading - and watch some of the authors (including Richard Branson) talk about their report.

Their report on coal is particularly interesting but is also discussed in Heinberg's book (Blackout: Coal ....) above.

Another week, another couple of excellent reports on energy security and transition strategy. The trickle of reports pointing out the depletion of fossil fuels and ways of transitioning to a more sustainable future are turning into a flood. In the UK alone we've had Sorrell's work from the ERC, the UK Industry Task Force on Peak Oil and Energy Security, David King's paper on overstated oil reserves in the last six months or so.

Now we have two more. The first is from insurers Lloyds and think tank Chatham House and deals with Sustainable Energy Security

http://www.chathamhouse.org.uk/files/16720_0610_froggatt_lahn.pdf

and, while not mentioning peak fossil fuels directly, clearly suggests that we should leave them before they leave us ...

The second is a must read for those in the Transition movement (even just the executive summary - it is a huge document!), is published by the Centre for Alternative Technology (which is well worth a visit if you ever visit Wales) and can be found here:-

Hi folks,

As many of you probably know, Forth Energy plan to build a huge big muckle
biomass power plant on the docks in Leith.

Whilst Biomass is currently assumed to be 100% renewable, clean and therefore a
good thing in most policy circles, there's some recent research been released
that suggests that replacing coal fired electricity generation with Biomass is
actually worse over short time scales (ie the first few decades) from a carbon
point of view than burning coal - even though over very long timescales Biomass
will eventually prove to be better (i.e centuries).

You can read the full thing here: http://www.manomet.org/node/322

Forth Energy see the lifetime of their proposed plant in decades not centuries.
Given the urgency of the climate challenge we face, if this research is correct
it would appear that they'd be better burning coal - and of course, much better
putting in a mix of renewables. Afterall we need carbon cuts now - not in 50 or
100 years time.

If there's any academics out there who fancy taking a look at this paper, and
letting me know what you think it means for the likes of the Forth Energy
Biomass proposals on Leith Docks, I'd be most grateful for your thoughts.

The link to that research again is: http://www.manomet.org/node/322

Enjoy!

INVITE:

Dear friends,

I would like to invite you to a campaign meeting about bioenergy and forests on 2nd July at 10am.

The meeting will be at the Forest Cafe, 3 Bristo Place, Edinburgh EH1 1EY (You will get the room details from anyone working at the cafe).

Wally Menne from Timberwatch, a South African alliance of NGOs and individuals concerned about monoculture tree plantations, will give a short presentation about the impacts of UK bioenergy policies on communities and the environment in South Africa and other African countries.

I work with Biofuelwatch and will give a brief overview of the bioenergy developments planned in Scotland and elsewhere in the UK.

We both work with the Global Forest Coalition, an international network of NGOs and Indigenous Peoples Organisations which works to support the rights of forest dependent peoples and campaigns against the underlying causes of deforestation.

After the presentations, we will have a lot of time to discuss the impacts of large-scale bioenergy developments both in the global South and in the UK and, above all, how to respond to them.

The meeting will take place at the same time as the Commonwealth Forestry Conference in Edinburgh, which is expected to see a lot of industry promotion of monoculture tree plantations and bioenergy.  Meantime, during the global year of biodiversity, bad policy decisions on bioenergy and agrofuels, made at different policy levels in Europe and the UK will have major negative impacts on species and habitats in countries targeted for tree and agrofuel plantations and/or greater logging.

It would be great to see you on 2nd July.  Please let me (Ms Almuth Ernsting <almuthbernstinguk@...>) know if you are able to attend.

It would be helpful if you could pass this invite on to other forest, climate and social justice campaigners who might be interested.  Many thanks.

Best regards,

Almuth Ernsting

Subject: Climate9 End of Week One Update: Scheduled Air Ambulance not Emergency Flight :“This is news to me” says Police

Heres the exciting (and revealing) news from the last day in court of the first week.

The court has been packed with supporters all week, which is due to continue this Monday at 9am. There are minibuses leaving from Glasgow this Sunday 5pm to bring supporters, if you would like to hop on (and be back in Glasgow for Monday evening) please call Jimmy on 07856799449.

We are also dangerously low on funds over the coming weeks and if anyone has a few coins in the bottom of their pocket, that would be greatly appreciated. The paypal is on the website, but if you want to put funds straight into our account please email info@... and we will email you straight back with details.

Many thanks and have a great weekend. Onwards!

Scheduled Air Ambulance not Emergency Flight :“This is news to me” says Police Inspector from witness box

Inspector Irvine was on duty on the morning on the 3rd of march 2009. He told the court on Friday 18th June that on the day he was acting on information, from a source which was not the police. This featured an ‘emergency flight’, a ‘critically ill baby’, a ‘helicopter’ and that they ‘needed the taxiway’.

When informed that it was established, just yesterday, that this was a scheduled air ambulance, not an emergency flight, Inspector Irvine responded:

This is news to me that it was a scheduled flight”.

Boggia’s advocate then asked the police inspector “would Breach of the Peace [with which the 9 accused are charged] include the whole circumstances - including inaccurate information about taxiways and emergency flights?” Inspector Irvine confirmed this would be the case. This erroneous information could bring into question the charge of Breach of Peace.

On Thursday 17th June a video of the protest was screened to the Jury, who witnessed defendant Dan Glass informing the police cameraman of their objectives. Dan Glass stated that they were there to “close the airport for as long as possible; to stop CO2 emissions as they are dangerous; to stop airport expansion; to end short haul flights; to support people in high-emission industry into green jobs; to highlight the social disparity between those who cause the problems and those who suffer the impacts.”

Juliana Napier from the Climate9 Defence Committee (1) continued: 'This evidence is incredibly important in establishing the truth of what happened during the protest. The Climate9 freely assembled in Aberdeen airport to stop the harmful emissions causing runaway climate change and raise awareness about the issue. They did this to ensure that our own and future generations can enjoy good health in a safe environment not to endanger the life or health of anyone.'

The court has been packed with supporters all week, which is due to continue this Monday at 9am.

Notes:

(1) Climate 9 Defence Committee

The “Climate9 Defence Committee” is a group of organisations and individuals formed to support the 9 co-defendants outside of the court room and raise public awareness of the trial.

Hi all,

While you get set for the summer holidays, a date for your diaries .

Painting Edinburgh Green 2  on Saturday September 25 and Sunday 26 in the Out of the Blue Drill hall in Dalmeny Street Leith.  The Saturday will be an open event with stall holders show- casing community activities moving towards greater sustainability and less oil dependence on the themes of Energy, Food and other ( transport, waste, reskilling ).  Sunday will be an activists conference with an emphasis on resilience on the same themes.  Details will follow after the summer .

Do tell as many people as you can about PEG2.  One or two people who no longer have time to be involved with Transition Edinburgh Pentlands have been included in this mailing in case their new groups may be interested.  Others may already know the date themselves, but are asked to forward this to their mailing lists.

There's currently an Early Day Motion (EDM) before the UK parliament on the subject of the renewable heat incentive (RHI). The purpose of this email is to ask you to consider writing to your MP to ask him/her to support this EDM.

The RHI will encourage individuals to use renewable heat which will in turn reduce CO2 emissions and our dependence on depleting natural gas for heating, making our communities more resilient to the twin threats of climate change and peak oil and gas.

Background.
-------------

The RHI is supposed to be up and running by next April having just been through a consultation phase, but since the change of government there has been no statement of what the new government's thinking is on this issue.

The RHI will provide financial support for installing things like solar heating systems, ground and air source heat pumps, anaerobic digestion for the production of biogas, biomass heat generation and CHP etc. Full details of what has been proposed can be found here:-

http://www.rhincentive.co.uk/

Early day motions (EDMs) are formal motions submitted for debate in the House of Commons. However, very few EDMs are actually debated. Instead, they are used for reasons such as publicising the views of individual MPs, drawing attention to specific events or campaigns, and demonstrating the extent of parliamentary support for a particular cause or point of view.

Details of the EDM relating to the RHI (EDM 143) may be found here

http://edmi.parliament.uk/EDMi/EDMDetails.aspx?EDMID=41062&SESSION=905

EDM 143 is asking the government to clarify its position on the RHI.

How to contact your MP.
--------------------------

Use the website

http://www.theyworkforyou.com/

to find your MP.

You should find a link like this

on your MP's webpage at theyworkforyou.com

Use this link and compose a letter asking your MP to support EDM  143. There's an example on this webpage

http://www.yougen.co.uk/blog-entry/1488/Ask+your+MP+for+clarity+about+the+Renewable+Heat+Incentive/

Please feel free to pass this email on to interested lists/groups/friends.

Many thanks and best wishes,

Alister.
