Subject: Open Days at Garden Cottage

We are planning open days on Saturday July 21 (end of soft fruit main season) and Saturday October 13, (Peak of the top fruit season) so people can look round the garden, have some conversation as to how and why, and un update on considerable progress made in the last year, and meet like minded people.  As in the past the open times are 11-4, and we will provide salad and hot food.  We do ask people to make a donation (recommended amount ten pounds per person).

There will be plants (catalogue available upon request) and books for sale.  50% of the profits will be donated to our chosen charity- Friends of African Nursing.

http://www.foan.org.uk/

We have two other open days planned this year for specific groups on Saturday May 12 (this coming Saturday) with James Chapman’s current Permaculture course, and on Sunday June 24 with Borders Organic Gardeners.  There are a lesser number of spaces to join these afternoon sessions.

If you wish to come do tell us whether you are vegetarian, vegan or omnivore (anything more complicated than that and we’ll leave you to it!), how many will be in your party and whether we can assist organise lift share.  Directions will be sent to those who respond.

If you no longer wish to be on this e-mail list do tell us and your name will be deleted!

Hello,

We are inviting individual activists and volunteers to join the organising group for Edinburgh World Justice Festival 2012.

I attach a flyer about this; we will be grateful if you can circulate it to individuals who you think might like to take up this interesting and creative opportunity.

There will be a meeting of the planning group at 7.30 on Thursday 17 May at Circus, 8 St Mary's Street, Canongate, Edinburgh. Those interested should come to this; or if they can't attend on that night, get in touch with me on 07851 348426; or email us at info@....

best wishes

Matthew Crighton

More information:

We’ve agreed in principle that the 2012 festival in October – provided there are enough people who will help make it happen. It will include a major event on the the main theme of the festival; plus a programme of separate events organised by individual organisations. It will follow and link to the Take One Action Film Festival. The theme has not been formulated precisely yet but we seek to cover issues of debt, including climate debt, and economic alternatives.

The festival is run by people working on a voluntary basis so its success depends on having a large enough group of people to make it work. Things we need to do include inviting speakers, booking venues, liaising with supporting organisations and event organisers, seeking sponsorship, managing the budget, design work, website management and development, promotion and electronic media.

Dear ELFN supporter,

Details of the next visit in the Eat, Meet and Talk series -

Saturday 19 May, 10.30 am – visit to the Community Gardens and Orchard in Portobello

Meet outside Brunstane Railway Station at 10.30 am

Volunteers in Portobello have planted around 90 fruiting trees such as apples, pears, plums and cherries, particularly focusing on a range of unusual, old and local varieties. They are also planting soft fruit bushes such as currants and gooseberries, and have plans to plant trees such as willow and hazel that can be used for coppicing and to make fencing or seating for the area, or for craft activities such as basket weaving. They have installed bee hives and there is an active and trained bee-keeping group. The gardens are an example of how voluntary enthusiasm and effort can transform vacant ground into productive land in the city. The visit will tell you about the reality behind making a project like this happen.

Please email Eva Schonveld eva@... to let her know if you plan to come to this event, or if you need any more information.

>>> Reports of the visit to Whitmuir Organics and the talks by Eleanor Cunningham of the Edinburgh Larder and Denise Walton of Peelham Farm are now available on the ELFN web-site.

Next event – 7 June  John Fletcher of Fletchers Venison, Auchtermuchty, 7 pm, Edinburgh Larder.

Help shape our new digital service

The Council has successfully been awarded funding for a parks and green spaces project which includes developing a new website and app to:

  • support exploring and enjoying the city's parks and green spaces
  • learn about heritage, conservation and biodiversity.

Images and short descriptions on items and areas of interest will be mapped as 'collections' and can be spotted following routes across the city. Users will be able to add comments, photos and collections.

We welcome your participation:

  • how/when would you use this?
  • what content would be of interest to you?
  • other ideas you have around this topic?
  • Please join in:

    • in a focus group at the Central Library, George IV Bridge, on Tuesday 22nd May from 6-6.45pm or 7-7.45pm or Wednesday 23rd May from 6-6.45pm or 7-7.45pm
    • in an online focus group on Monday 21st May from 3.00-4.00pm or 6.30-7.30pm - or another time slot in the week of 21st May, to be arranged as mutually suitable with the researcher

Please get in touch to let us know which session you can attend so you can give your thoughts on this new service or volunteer to test the prototype at a later stage in the project.

    ---------- Forwarded message ----------
    From: Jane Arnold <je_arnold@...>

I've just had an excellent afternoon at the Suntrap Garden.

It, along with Millbuie house, with its very forward thinking energy saving devices (so advanced for its time that it has recently become a listed building because of it) was bequeathed by Boyd Anderson for the future enjoyment of and use by the people of Edinburgh.

The Garden has extensive glasshouses, a class room and a big potting shed - you can get an idea by going onto one of their websites: http://sos2010.btck.co.uk/SuntrapGardenplan

As I understand it, the Edinburgh Council gave (no money exchanged) the Millbuie house and surrounding garden to Oatridge who used it for the good of the Edinburgh people.  The other part of the property was given (no money exchanged) to the National Trust and they used the land for the good of the people of Edinburgh.  All was well until Oatridge and the National Trust ran short of money and decided to ignore the spirit of Boyd Anderson's will and put the properties up for sale - Oatridge's portion is now on the open market - and take the money for themselves ie the property is no longer to be used for the enjoyment of the people of Edinburgh.  Maybe Boyd Anderson's will is not airtight?  However, as I see it, both Oatridge and the National Trust are morally in the wrong.

The Friends of Suntrap Garden are trying, with limited resources, to fight these actions so that the property can continue to be used, as Boyd Anderson intended, for the enjoyment of and use by the people of Edinburgh and WE ALL can help them by:

    1.  If you are a lawyer, then help them fight the cause.

    2.  Give them some money - anything you can.  Go to: www.suntrapgarden.org/?page_id=105

    3.  Put pressure on your MP/MSP.

    4.  Support them by visiting the gardens.  They have an open day on Saturday 27 May 2012 from 10.30am to 4pm-http://www.suntrapgarden.org/ - and are open every Saturday and Sunday throughout the summer from 10am to 4pm.

There are instructions on the website as to how to reach the Suntrap Garden by bus or car - http://sos2010.btck.co.uk/HowtoFindSuntrap - , however you can also go by bus and walk, by bike or by train and walk.
Bus and walk:  take the Lothain 25 or 34 buses (c (about) 35mins from George Street or c20mins from Haymarket).  Get off at Hermiston Park & Ride then take the second exit (going clockwise) at the roundabout you came in on in the bus, then take the second road on the right, going over the Union canal and the M8.  Take the next road on the left, signposted 'Suntrap' 1/3 mile - time c15mins.
Bike: bike along the Union Canal joining anywhere from the basin at Fountainbridge and exit at Gogar Station Road - second road after the aquaduct, and turn right, then left at the road signposted 'Suntrap' 1/3 mile.
Train and walk: catch the train to Edinburgh Park then get onto the Union Canal and follow the same instructions as for 'Bike'.

Enjoy the garden and tell everyone else about it.

    Invitation to:

    Where do we GROW now?

A workshop for community food growers on finding new places to grow fruit and veg in our towns and cities

    Tuesday 29 May 2012

6pm to 8pm (registration and sandwiches from 5.30pm)

The Space, Media Education, 183 Dalry Road, Edinburgh

    What is it about?

We want to help more communities in Scotland to find more spaces and new ways to grow their own food. National research published last year highlighted that more and more people in Scotland want to grow their own fruit and veg but land availability is a major constraint.

Scottish Government has funded greenspace scotland to bring together community groups who are working on food growing and local food projects to create a vision of ‘our ideal food growing community’.

We will create a visual plan of a typical Scottish settlement which

    ·           illustrates the range of different community growing models (e.g. allotments, community gardens, edible landscapes) and

    ·           matches these to the different places where community growing could happen (e.g. school grounds, backgreens, temporary spaces, even road side planters)

At end of the project we will have a big map of a typical Scottish settlement that illustrates all of different places where community growing can happen with supporting information on each of these.

We see it being used by communities to spark ideas, identify which types of growing they want to take forward, and to begin to map their own community growing vision and plans. It will help them to:

    ·           take a more strategic and community wide approach to community food growing

    ·           consider all of the different land and growing options that are available to them

    ·           select the ‘right’ growing model for specific sites and circumstances

    What will we do?

This event will involve us in discussing and mapping out the different places and ways communities can grow food. A graphic artist will help us to record and illustrate these. We need your ideas, expertise and knowledge to help us do this.

Please join us and other community growers to help us to help more communities to grow their own.

Places are limited and so please return the attached registration form to info@... by 21 May 2012

    ·           If you are personally unable to attend – we would welcome another representative/representatives from your project/group to attend in your place

    ·           Travel expenses for community representatives can be refunded - a claim form will be provided at the event

    ·           This workshop will be repeated on Thursday 31 May 2012 in Glasgow – please let me know if you would prefer to attend this session

    Kind regards

    Ea

    Hi everyone,

I just wanted to tell you about this incredibly inspiring festival that is happening 22-28 July down on Burnlaw Farm in Northumberland:

The summer festival is inspired by the notion of one people one planet, and that each individual is a contributor no matter how big or small. By coming together and celebrating our diversity we reveal our potential as humans - “a mine rich in gems of inestimable value”.

It will be a time to come together to celebrate, to eat lusheous food, be inspired, laugh, engage in new visions, reflect on the past, sing, climb trees, rest, energise, and explore our true self in an atmosphere of openess, kindness and joy...or none of the above and just do whatever.

There will be morning courses (of 'breathing in' with topics such as civilisations of present and past, non-violent communication, healing, singing workshop), afternoon workshops (of 'breathing out', building a tree-house, dance, gardening, writing, art and much more), communal eating and cooking and lots of fun evening entertainments with storytelling, cabaret, and fun dancing.

Registration is now open and you can visit our website for more information on workshops, prices and background:
www.earthingthespirit.co.uk and our facebook group here: http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/events/369114749799784/

Come join us and help create this festival and please get in touch with us if you have any questions or if you have any ideas and want to help run a workshop.
We look forward to hearing from you and hope to see you in July.

    Yours lovingly,

    Earthing the Spirit

    Dear Edinburgh 10:10ers,

For the last year or so, we’ve been working with Remade in Edinburgh, a community repair and reuse project that walked away with the public vote at last October's Pitch Pledge Party event.

The project has been running free weekly repair sessions for textiles, laptops and furniture, and recently inspired us to run a worldwide Remade campaign of our own.

Remade in Edinburgh started as part of south Edinburgh’s Transition group, but now (partly thanks to the support of the 10:10 community) it’s strong enough enough to set up as a standalone organisation.

They’re holding a special event this Saturday (9 June) to celebrate everything that’s happened so far, and launch the next phase of the project. And you’re invited!

    Date: Saturday 9 June
    Time: 2-5pm
Location: The Studio, St Augustine United Church, 41 George IV Bridge, Edinburgh EH1 1EL
    RSVP: admin@...

    Come along to discover
    • What Remade in Edinburgh is all about
    • How the project has inspired 10:10ers around the world to hold their own Remade events
    • Some major partnerships that’ll help spread the Remade message to unexpected places
    • How you can join up, and get rewarded for helping out through the volunteer credit scheme.

There’ll also be a display of remade objects, copies of the brand new constitution and a charity raffle.

If you’d like to go along, email admin@... to book your place. And if you can’t make it but want to try some repairing of your own, check out the special Remade section on our website.

    All the best,

    Julika Niehaus
    Global campaign manager

P.S. We love hearing about your repair projects and other carbon-cutting successes. If you’ve got a picture, story or top tip to share, why not post it on the 10:10 Facebook page?

    Invitation to an expert seminar:

    An ‘ideal food growing community’

    Friday 29th June 2012
    2pm to 5pm
    5 Rose Street
    Edinburgh EH2 2PR

We want to help more communities in Scotland to find more spaces and ways to grow their own food. National research published last year highlighted that more and more people in Scotland want to grow their own fruit and veg but land availability is a major constraint.

Scottish Government has funded greenspace scotland to engage community growing groups and community growing experts in creating a vision of ‘our ideal food growing community’. This will be a visual plan of a typical Scottish settlement which:
    ·           illustrates the range of different community growing models (e.g. allotments, community gardens, edible landscapes) and;
    ·           matches these to the different places where community growing could happen (e.g. school grounds, backgreens, temporary spaces, even road side planters)

At end of the project we aim to have a big map of a typical Scottish settlement that illustrates all of different places where community growing can happen with supporting information on the community growing ‘scenarios’ represented.

    The seminar
The seminar will share findings from 2 workshops held with representatives from local growing groups and seek your expertise in:
    ·           reviewing and refining the prototype ‘ideal food growing community’
    ·           developing the details of the community growing ‘scenarios' to be represented (pros/cons, practical considerations, who to involve, case studies, etc.)

We hope you can join us. We need your ideas, expertise and knowledge to help us do this!

To confirm your participation please return the attached registration form to info@... by 25 June 2012

    Dear all
Bridgend Growing Communities offer horticultural training in food growing, delivered at Bridgend Allotments, the courses are accredited by Oatridge College.

A great opportunity of free horticultural training is our 'Growing Greener Futures' programme, specifically offered to people on benefits, or on a low wage, and is funded by Awards for All. We hope the course will appeal to individuals who are keen to get involved in community food growing at Bridgend. Along with horticultural training in food growing, we are in the fantastic position throughout 2012 to offer our Bridgend Volunteers training in Food Hygiene, First Aid and training in Developing skills for Group Work.

The GGF course is delivered over 12 weeks and is on a Monday 10am-1pm or a Thursday 1-4pm. The next intake is week beginning 2nd July!
Please feel free to forward this great opportunity onto any potentially interested individuals or groups. And if the posters can be printed off and displayed on a notice board this would be very much appreciated. Your support helps people to grow their own food and live healthier lives.
    Yours

    Chris

I think that Survey Monkey  only allows one response from the group which counts as one email address - which has already been used.  Sorry if that has caused confusion - I'm new to this !   I did send a link to the people who have been to TE meetings.  If you were not on that list  and want to complete the survey, please let me know your email address. I should be able to send you the link ( assuming I cope with adding more addresses)

    Hello there,

It's a week to go till the ELFN visit to the famous and fabulous Community Garden at the Royal Edinburgh - see below for more info.

Meet on Wednesday the 20th June at 11am outside the portocabin (next to Watsonians Football Club) just off Myreside Road).  Hope to see you there.

Please get back to me if you're planning to come along.

    All the best, Eva
    --

Royal Edinburgh Community Gardens is a pilot project that is run by Edinburgh Cyrenians to use up to fifteen acres of NHS Lothian owned land in south Edinburgh for a vibrant community garden. The initiative adopts a holistic approach to health promotion which recognises the long term beneficial impacts of community gardening which includes opportunities for improving physical and mental health, healthier eating, contact with nature and social inclusion.

Dr Charles Winstanley, Chair, NHS Lothian: “I am delighted with the use of NHS Lothian land for community gardens as an important part of health promotion.”

Interest in community growing is increasing whilst provision of land for this purpose has not. The RECG uses an innovative approach to provide land for community growing within the NHS estate. The model used facilitates high levels of on-going community participation in which the day to day development at the gardens is largely community-led resulting in a truly community created urban green space.

I'd like to invite you (and others you think may be interested) to participate in a discussion following talks by my friends and colleagues Euan Mearns (U. of Aberdeen) and Rembrandt Koppelaar (Institute for Integrated Economic Research) this coming Friday in Edinburgh.  They will be presenting a 'resource-oriented perspective' to issues of fuel scarcity and climate change, that I am hoping will lay the ground for some good discussion between the geoscience and economics camps.  There'll be beer, too.  I want to make it as controversial as possible, so any help spreading the word from you will be appreciated.  Here is a link to the event: http://scenetwork.co.uk/perspectives-economics-energy-friday-22-june-2012

    Hi there,

This is a reminder that the next Edinburgh Local Food Event is in just over a week on the 5th of July.  At 7pm we are delighted to welcome Lynne Mann of the award winning Supernature oils, based in Midlothian to another ELFN talk at the Edinburgh Larder, Blackfriar's Street.  £5 will get you a delicious bowl of soup and an informative and friendly evening!  This is the final talk in our current series - it would be great to see you there!

In addition to this, there will be an ELFN planning meeting at the same venue at 6pm, so if you can make it early and would like to contribute to planning what's next for our network, do come along.

Please let me know if you're planning to come along - we need to know how many to cater for.
---Lynn and Chris Mann only started producing ‘supernature’ cold-pressed rapeseed oil on their farm in Midlothian, 8 miles from Edinburgh, in January 2011, and have already won several awards and this year expanded their range of oils significantly. Chris’s family has been farming the land at Carrington Barns Farm for six generations but with falling commodity prices they looked hard at how they could diversify and noticed the advent of rapeseed oil onto the market, and consumers’ interest in an oil that was half the saturated fat of olive oil. They grow a special variety of spring rapeseed on the farm making it different to other oils produced in Scotland and from 2012 have also localised the crushing operation on the farm. Come and meet Lynn and talk about the localisation of more of our food – and taste their oils!

In many ways, Transition towns are acts of the imagination and of storytelling.  Three years ago the idea for a "green" reading group was conceived at a Transition Edinburgh Heart and Soul Event.  The book group was born shortly afterwards and has been going ever since.  June 30th is officially National Reading Group Day, here in the UK, so I thought I'd celebrate by getting the word out to more Transitioners about our group.

We read a range of fiction and non-fiction books to do with people and nature, and the plants and animals we share our planet with.  We meet for some friendly and lively discussion from 7:30 pm  - 9:30 pm on the third Wednesday of every second month .  To give you some idea of what we read, past books include:

    Wildwood, by Roger Deakin
    Prodigal Summer, by Barbara Kingsolver
Tarka the Otter, by Henry Williamson
    Findings, by Kathleen Jamie
The Last Bear, by Mandy Haggith
Gathering Moss, by Robin Wall Kimmerer

Our upcoming book discussions will be as follows:

July 18thThe Wild Places, by Rob MacFarlane
Sept 19thThe Word for World is Forest, by Ursula K LeGuin
Nov 21stThe Carbon Cycle, by Kate Rawles

    Dear Donald,

Not again! There are worrying rumours of a behind-the-scenes effort to revive plans to sell off England’s woodlands. We may have less than a week to stop them and keep our forests safe for future generations.

Next week, the government's forest panel will publish a new report on the future of our woodlands. [1] Rumours are circulating that some panel members want to clear the way for a fresh sell-off. We’ve got a few days to persuade the rest of them to block this new threat to our beautiful woodlands.

Please add your name to the urgent petition now, and then forward this email to your family and friends. We’ll do an emergency delivery to each of the panel members before next Wednesday:
    https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/keep-our-woods-safe

It's a bit depressing that anyone still thinks selling off England's woodlands is a good idea! But it's not all that surprising - the government forest panel includes vested interests from the private timber industry. [2] A huge people powered petition could help sway undecided panel members and make sure these vested interests don't win out.

Our woodlands are at their best at this time of year. Animals and plants are flourishing. A new generation of children is learning to ride bikes and climb trees. For those of us that live in cities and towns, woodlands give us a chance to slow down and enjoy nature. And for tens of thousands of people, jobs in forests pay their wages. [3] That's why last year, half a million of us stood together to stop them being sold off. [4]

The next few days are crucial to protect these beautiful wild places - please sign the emergency petition now:
    https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/keep-our-woods-safe

    Thanks for being involved,

Hannah, Marie, Cian, David, Becky, James, David T, Belinda and the 38 Degrees team

PS: The government has already stated publicly that up to 40,000 hectares of woodland could be put up for sale again within weeks of this report being published. We can't let this start again! Please sign the petition now: https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/keep-our-woods-safe
