Hello there-

Welcome to DRIG!

Deaf Rights In Georgia. DRIG is a group of people that are seeking ways to
improve d/Deaf rights in this state of Georgia. We seek not only to improve, but
to promote, to empower, and to actually enforce. We are currently conducting a
survey on the hiring process at the two deaf schools in Georgia. If you or
someone you know have applied for a position (any position) at the Atlanta Area
School for the Deaf or the Georgia School for the Deaf in the past five years,
please contact me and I'll send you a questionnaire either through email or vp.

Who: any person who has applied for any position at AASD or GSD in the past 5
years, deaf or hearing. It doesn't matter if you were hired or not.

My email is DeafRIG@.... Please share this with others, who may not
receive epeachy, particularly those out of state.

Thank you and I look forward to your response. :)

===============================

We are getting closer to our July 24, Georgia Hands & Voices 3rd Annual Back to
School Bash and just wanted to send out a reminder since we are less than a
month away and are really looking forward to a fun and informative afternoon.

We hope you are planning on coming, we have a fabulous panel planned who will be
sharing their diverse and personal experiences as adults who are Deaf,
representing various communication modes and hearing devices. We are also
excited about Janet DesGeorges, the National Outreach Director for Hands &
Voices National coming from Colorado to present. While we are hearing from
them, our children will have the opportunity to jump in a Bounce House, cool off
with a snowcone, take part in a puppet craft and story...and have fun with other
kids and responsible childcare volunteers. We will will have an opportunity to
interact with a wide variety of exhibitors related to Hearing Impairment and
Deafness and then eat some great food, while meeting other parents and
professionals who are so dedicated to families finding the right fit for our
children who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

Please join us on Saturday, July 24, from 2-7pm at the Atlanta Area School for
the Deaf. We would greatly appreciate your RSVP at info@... so
that we may be appropriately prepared with certified sign language interpreters,
CART captioning services and childcare volunteers...not to mention refreshments!

There is a minimal cost to attend to help us provide all of these wonderful
things if you are not already a member, but if you join it is free to attend,
PLUS you benefit from all of the membership perks! Remember we do offer
scholarships to families. Below are the details, as well as a flyer which I
have attached to this email.

Hope you are having a wonderful summer, with the numbers of attendees growing
from 60 in 2008 to 80 last year, we are really looking forward to an even bigger
event this year.

  Sincerely, Terri Patterson

Hi Everyone - I am sending this out to ask that you do something that will help
my good friend Pamela Wilkerson win a contest to go on an expedition to
Antarctica in Oct., 2010. She had to write a letter about herself and post a
picture of herself on the following website: http://www.adventurewithjulie.com
and now she waits to see who gets the most votes! She needs at least 600 votes!
Pam is Deaf and she has always been in tune with, and loved nature, especially
animals, with her most favorite animal being the penguin. She has done a lot of
volunteer work with animals, both wildlife and domestic. It is her lifelong
dream to go on something like this expedition and see the penguins "live", so
please help her get the most votes by voting for her and passing this request
onto your friends, families, and email lists/co-workers, etc. That would be
awesome! Voting goes until 8-31-10. In order to vote, you have to create a
log-in/register. Thanks so much for considering doing this for Pam, and thanks
for taking the time to read all of this email!

===========================

H.R. 3101 Takes a Step Forward and Leaves People who are Deaf-Blind Behind On
June 30, 2010, the U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee on Communications,
Technology, and the Internet considered the "Twenty-first Century Communications
and Video Accessibility Act" (H.R. 3101). Rick Boucher (D-VA), chairman of the
Subcommittee, offered an "Amendment in the Nature of a Substitute" (a new H.R.
3101) which replaced the original bill.

The new H.R. 3101 is missing an important provision funding for specialized
communications equipment needed by people who are deaf-blind, such as
refreshable Braille devices. That funding, up to $10 million per year, was not
included in the new H.R. 3101. The Subcommittee voted favorably on the new H.R.
3101. The bill will be considered next by the full Committee on Energy and
Commerce.

Possible funding sources, for up to $10 million per year, include the Universal
Service Fund and the Interstate Telecommunications Relay Service Fund. These
funds were created to ensure that all Americans have access to the nation's
communications network.

Deaf-blind people cannot afford to buy expensive equipment to help them access
the phone and Internet. For example, the Deaf-Blind Communicator, which enables
deaf-blind people to make telephone calls, access the Internet and communicate
with other people who otherwise could not communicate with them, costs $8,000
alone.

Although a few states have equipment distribution programs, most do not
distribute equipment that meets the needs of people who are deaf-blind. A secure
and consistent source of funding is needed to assure that the communication
needs of this small, discrete, and un-served population are met. This community
does not have the political presence to ensure annual appropriations from
Congress.

By restoring Section 105(b) to H.R. 3101, you will ensure that approximately
70,000 deaf-blind people get the specialized equipment needed for them to have
telecommunications services, Internet access, and advanced communications.

Act today!
Contact House Energy and Commerce Committee members and tell them you want
Section 105 (b) back in H.R. 3101.

Here's what you can do:

Call or fax the members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee now and ask
them to put back Section 105 (b) in H.R. 3101.
If any of these committee members live in your district, please call them and
make appointments with them in person to talk about H.R. 3101. Ask to talk to
their legislative assistants in charge of telecommunications. You can find their
addresses on www.house.gov.
Call them today! Or deaf-blind people will be further, further and further
behind!

sComm announces beta testing of new and revolutionary
cellular text communication technology

Live Mobile Text allows faster live dialogue with patented split-screen

Raytown, Missouri - July 7, 2010 - sComm, developer and manufacturer of UbiDuo,
the face-to-face communicator, announced the UbiVia, the next generation of
cellular text communication on smartphones. Beta testing of the new product was
launched at the National Association of the Deaf conference, taking place this
week in Philadelphia, PA and will be offered exclusively to BlackBerry®
smartphone users to start.

The UbiVia, which is downloaded on smartphones, allows users at both ends of the
conversation to read what each other types in live real-time, on a split-screen
display. This results in faster and simultaneous conversations, eliminating the
need to take turns talking or wait for a response from the other person. This
new form of communication is faster than instant messaging (IM) or SMS.

"The UbiVia establishes new standards of texting and experience never available
or offered before on cell phones," says Jason Curry, CEO of sComm. "When you
call someone, it will ring like a cell phone, and you will have the option of
accepting or rejecting the incoming text call. You also have audible, visual and
vibration alert options."

The UbiVia will run on BlackBerry smartphones available through all four major
carriers in the United States - AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon. sComm is now
recruiting current BlackBerry smartphone users to participate in UbiVia beta
testing trials; the last stage before going on the market. Product information
and UbiVia beta tester sign up is available at the UbiVia website at
http://www.myubivia.com .

About sComm
sComm, which stands for "simultaneous communications," is a privately-held
company in Raytown, MO founded in 2002 to design its first product, the UbiDuo,
a dedicated communicator that facilitates face-to-face text-based communication
in businesses, government, agencies and social settings. Information about sComm
and the UbiDuo is available at http://www.scomm.com .

sComm was a recipient of the Technology Company of the Year Award by the
Missouri Department of Economic Development in 2006, and the Inclusion for
Universal Design Award from the Governor's Council on Disability in 2006, and is
a member of the BlackBerry Alliance Program.

The BlackBerry and RIM families of related marks, images and symbols are the
exclusive properties and trademarks of Research In Motion Limited.

From the American Association of the Deaf-Blind (AADB)
http://aadb.org/

Date: July 9, 2010

Take Action Now for the 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act
of 2009!

Dear Supporters and Friends of AADB,

On June 30, 2010, the House Subcommittee on Communications, Technology and the
Internet removed Section 105 (b) from HR 3101, the 21st Century Communications
and Video Accessibility Act of 2009, which allocates $10 million in funding to
help deaf-blind people purchase expensive equipment that will enable them to
have access to telecommunications.

To fight this move, you have two options:

Option 1:
The online petition can be found at:

http://www.petition2congress.com/2/3378/lend-your-voice-to-support-americas-forg\
otten-community .

This is by far the easiest and fastest way to get your signature and
thought across to your representatives and the President of the United States.

All you need to do is to give your full name, email address and zip code.
You can also request that your name, email address or both not to be posted on
the website.

If you are having problem with the online petition or cannot access it, please
contact Randall Pope at randy.pope@... immediately. He will be able to help
you in signing your name online.

Option 2:
Perhaps you would like to help spread the word about the petition. The
petition in MS Word is available and be downloaded at
http://aadb.org/download/petitions/2010-07_petition_easy.rtf .

You can forward the petition to as many people as you think will sign the
petition and forward it to your representative or the AADB office. Or you can
just sign it yourself and send it to your representative or the AADB office.

Please note: For the MS Word version, you will need to write down your full
name, address, and a quick way to contact you (such as a phone or fax number or
an email address).

If you need further help or have questions, please contact Elizabeth Spiers at
Elizabeth.Spiers@... or Randall Pope at randy.pope@... .

Thank you very much for your support!
