Subject: SURVEY QUESTIONNAIRE REGARDING SURGICAL TRAINING
events.updates6@...
Send Email Send Email

Dear All,

Over the past 1-2 decades there has been a paradigm shift in the conduct of surgical training. It is due to several different reasons. This has significantly impacted on the course and conduct of residency program. To what extent we have been able to adopt the newer ways of training and assessing our residents has not objectively assessed. We are aiming to conduct a survey addressed to both the trainee and trainers in order to identify not only the shortcomings of current training system but also the solution to improve it. We would also like to know your views about the current assessment system for surgery residents and your suggestions to improve it. The findings of this survey will be discussed on institutional as well as national level. We are also aiming to communicate the findings to the supervisors, institute and CPSP with a hope of that it will improve the surgical training.

May I request you to fill the following questionnaire which will take 5-7 minutes of your precious time. Thanks in anticipation.

Will appreciate your early reply.

Click the following link to fill the survey questionnaire.

Regards

mehwash nadeem

We don't have any Bone Marrow Donor's registration organizations in Pakistan!!!!

Huh!, You must be saying, I don't care...WTH, It's not my job. What a
crap post, I would love to see some joke on FB, reading other
walls, watching their pictures, just relaxing on FB, don't tell me this
shit. Why the hell should I take it seriously, I am not living in
Pakistan. One must be saying that I live in US, Canada, ME,etc.

I wish above paragraph could be true. Think for a moment that you have
been identified Bones Cancer(God forbid!) and you need BM for Bone
Marrow Transplant! and here comes the good news, Your chances of
getting a match is only 1 out of 20,000 if that screening is done in
your region/country(It's closely coupled with ethnic groups). But,
dear we don't have one in Pakistan. Pray that you get it or wait till
you can't login on Facebook anymore!

Do you still feel it a useless matter or are you willing to do it even
if your *state* is not doing anything about it?

Excerpt from Karim Jindani's email, which prompted me to write all this.

Today, I was sorely wishing we should have a National Bone Marrow
Registry in Pakistan :( I saw a website named PMDR.org have contacted
them also but I doubt they have enough donors.

During search I found this inspirational story of how the Bone Marrow
match drive was done for 2 south asians in USA. Even though both died
but 250 other people benefited from it.

http://www.dragonflyeffect.com/blog/dragonfly-in-action/case-studies/the-story-of-sameer-and-vinay/

Reason for all this is that we are searching matching bone marrow for
Bassim Abbas, a 7 year kid suffering from bones cancer. May Allah give
him full health inshallah and let the people of Pakistan think for a
while that today it's Bassim. Tomorrow, It can be Owais Khan, My
Spouse, My Kids,My Parents, You, Your Spouse, Your Kids, Your
Parents..Any One whom you don't want to lose!

http://www.facebook.com/helpsavealife.pk

Let's work together to sort out this simple matter. May be our move
can save someone's life in future. Spread this message to your
friends.

Thanks to Karim Jindani for giving awareness on this.

Topic Introduction:  Leukemias and lymphomas for non-oncologists

Hematological malignancies like Leukemias and Lymphomas are diseases that are solely and predominantly managed by oncologists.  However it is important for the non-oncologists to consider and initiate the early workup at initial presentation until the diagnosis is confirmed.  Furthermore these patients often have or later develop non-oncological medical issues for which they follow with their primary physicians.  Thus it is important for the physicians to have a reasonable understanding of the diagnostic and management issues that surround these patients for a smooth and effective care.

Presenter:  Dr Neelam Siddiqui

Venue:  Class room A, 3rd floor, Main Building, Shaukat Khanum Hospital, Johar Town, Lahore

Date/time: May 4th, 2012 from 3 pm to 4 pm

Target Audience: Family practitioners, internists, post graduate trainees in medicine/surgery, medical students, allied health sciences, etc.

Introduction of the presenter:  Dr Neelam Siddiqui is a consultant oncologist, currently, working at Shaukat Khanum  Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Center.  She has a vast experience in the management of Leukemias and lymphomas.  She is also serving as head of oncology division and program director for oncology fellowship training program at SKMCH&RC.   She is actively involved in the research activities and has got numerous publications to her credit.

Study Raises Doubts Over Treatment For Prostate Cancer
jeremy laurence

Cancer specialists are bracing themselves for publication of a research study that will challenge the way one of the commonest cancers is treated. The world’s biggest randomised trial of prostate cancer has found that the standard surgical treatment for the disease is ineffective.

The study compared surgical removal of the prostate gland ~ radical prostatectomy ~ with ‘watchful waiting’ (doing nothing). The results show that surgery did not extend life. A leading British specialist, who asked not to be named, said: “The only rational response to these results is, when presented with a patient with prostate cancer, to do nothing.â€

Cancer of the prostate is the commonest male cancer affecting 37,000 men a year in the UK and causing 10,000 deaths. But in up to 50 per cent of cases it is slow-growing, so that patients affected, even when left untreated, can live for many years and die of something else.

The results of the Prostate Intervention Versus Observation Trial (PIVOT), led by Timothy Wilt and started in 1994 with 731 men, showed that those who underwent the operation had less than a three per cent survival benefit compared with those who had no treatment, after being followed up for 12 years. The difference was not statistically significant and could have arisen by chance.
Surgery carries a risk of side effects that can have a serious impact on quality of life with 50 per cent of men suffering impotence and 10 per cent incontinence.

Dr Ben Challacombe, consultant urologist at Guys and St Thomas’ NHS Trust, disagreed with the analysis that the response should be to do nothing. Many of the men in the trial were older, with an average age of 67, low risk and would not have been offered surgery in the UK.

“We would offer milder treatment such as radiotherapy or watchful waiting. We are better than the USA in putting men on surveillance,†he said.

The controversy over the best treatment for prostate cancer has split professional opinion. Some specialists claim treatment is at the stage where breast cancer was a generation ago when the only surgical treatment was mastectomy, removal of the whole breast.
Today most women with breast cancer are treated with lumpectomy, involving surgical removal of the tumour, leaving the rest of the breast intact. Urologists believe a similar approach in prostate cancer could improve survival and reduce the risk of side effects because a smaller proportion of the prostate gland would be targeted and surrounding tissue left unaffected.
Critics of the approach say there is not enough evidence to justify targeted therapy. Dr Joel Nelson, of the department of urology at the University of Pittsburgh, said prostate cancer triggers molecular changes in the whole of the gland, which can lead to “malignant transformationâ€.

Targeting only part of the gland gives a “false sense of securityâ€, when there is a risk of recurrence which could be harder to treat, Dr Nelson said.
