FRIDAY FORUM FOR PASTORS AND CHRISTIAN LEADERS

FRIDAY JANUARY 14, 2010

Honoring the Elderly - Cherishing Their Children

A growing number of people are caring for elderly relatives in a variety of settings.  Dr. Barb Hanson will briefly explore some of the reasons it can be especially difficult to care for aging parents.  She will also discuss several ways in which parents and children can cooperate in making the transition more successful for everyone involved.  The church community is one of the main support systems for families furing this time of stress.  We'll take time during the presentation to share information and ideas about what you are doing to assist any who are caring for elderly relatives.

Please indicate your plan to attend this session by replying to this email or contacting us through the Friday Forums page at ardenwoodspsych.com.  If you have ideas for future sessions, please use one of these methods to share these also.

We look forward to seeing you at this session as we continue our journey of learning and growing together.

Hi Wanda,

This will be an excellent workshop. Please forward to the FCNN group. My hope
that many of the parish nurses and those that they serve would benefit
from the workshop.

Blessings on the New Year!

Good Morning Congregational Friends and Advocates:

I am hoping you will help me with raising awareness for an event that could
benefit many in our community who are either presently caring for someone
they love or they want to be prepared, and plan well for this life event in the
future! The event is entitled, the Unexpected Caregiver; we will be
presenting at Augustana Lutheran, West St. Paul on the morning of Saturday,
January 22. We've worked very hard to bring many experts to the table in
addition to a keynote speaker for the day (details below in 2 page flyer).

Our nationally renowned keynote speaker for the event is Kari Berit. Kari is
the author of a book entitled, "The Unexpected Caregiver. " She's
recently appeared on Kare 11's Showcase MN (See Link), she is working to develop
an on-going presence on WCCO and she has consistent presence on
Northfield's radio station. She is a very dynamic, informed and engaging
presenter. In addition, we have 6 experts presenting in break-out sessions,
which are intended to inform and enable people who are suddenly thrust into the
world of caring for someone they love.

There will be information from health care directives and housing options, to
funding sources for health care and legal advice for estate planning!
Also, for the Leaders in this email, we'd love for you to come observe this
interactive workshop! I'd love to offer this 3-4 more times throughout
the metro area in 2010, so perhaps you'd like to consider it for your
congregation??

Attached is the two page flyer with registration information, bulletin insert
and poster for you to utilize and post as you are able in key locations.
Here is a REGISTRATION LINK if you'd like to register family or friends
immediately.

For people who are suddenly thrust into care-giving roles, the content will be
phenomenal and highly informative. THANKS in advance for helping to
communicate about this event among constituents!!

Subject: Please Help me Promote Cancer Health Equity

Good Evening Mrs. Alexander,

Thank you for your willingness to pass this message on, I deeply appreciate.
Before you send this out, would you mind giving me some feedback on the
email below? Just what are your thoughts and/ or is there a different approach I
should take? Thank you again and hope you enjoy your evening.

Good Day,

My name is Makeisha Nesbitt, a Community Partnerships Specialist for the
American Cancer Society, we believe in equal access to cancer care. Social,
economic and political status should not determine whether people learn about
cancer risk factors, get screened or obtain treatment.

                                                Please Help Us Promote Cancer
Health Equity

Cancer steals family members, friends and neighbors from all of us, but the
burden of cancer is greater in certain communities.

Racial and ethnic minorities and the medically underserved are more likely to
develop cancer, and die from it, than the general U.S. population.
Research also shows that individuals without medical insurance are more likely
to be treated for cancer at late stages of disease, and they're more
likely to receive substandard care.

Help Us Promote Cancer Health Equity:

We need people who can talk with others about cancer to educate and empower, and
help them find resources. We partner with healthcare systems,
community health workers and culturally diverse volunteers to facilitate cancer
education, outreach and programming.
The American Cancer Society supports you with professional training, staff
support, and special volunteer events.

Why Volunteer for Us?

We are committed to educating and mobilizing culturally diverse communities to
promote cancer awareness and save lives from cancer.
Our mission of eliminating cancer depends on volunteers like you.
You can be a health resource to friends and family in your community.
Volunteering your time, skills and experience is a way to help save lives.
We couldn't do it alone. We need your help.

To get involved fill out the attached form below. We look forward to partnering
with you.

Sincerely,

Makeisha,
After speaking with you, it occurs to me that some faith community nurses or
their volunteers might be interested in your project. If you would send
me a brief description and contact information, I would be happy to forward your
message by email on to our listserve group, which includes about 90
faith community nurses. How would that be? You might get some good results.

Blessings to you,
Wanda

Good Afternoon Mrs. Alexander,

My name is Makeisha Nesbitt, a Community Partnerships Specialist for the
American Cancer Society. I work with Maxie Johns, a parish nurse at St.
Paul's UCC, on Cancer Awareness programs. She passed you contact information on
to me and thought you might be able to help me.

I am looking for an opportunity to present some information on cancer to a group
of people who may have an interest in sharing their time, skills and
experience with others. Is this something you might be able to help me with?
Thank you in advance for your consideration and I look forward to hearing
from you soon. Have a blessed day.

Subject: MA Expansion implementation to begin March 1

Greetings –

This morning Gov. Mark Dayton and Human Services Commissioner Lucinda Jesson announced that DHS will begin implementing expanded Medical Assistance (MA) March 1. The expansion is permitted for certain adults under an early Medicaid opt-in provision of federal health care reform. The 2010 Legislature authorized the governor to allow the expansion and Gov. Dayton signed an executive order Jan. 5. This expansion covers adults without children under age 21 in the home with incomes at or below 75 percent of the federal poverty guidelines, many of whom are currently enrolled in General Assistance Medical Care (GAMC) or MinnesotaCare.

Under the implementation plan, starting March 1, GAMC enrollees will automatically be enrolled and will receive MA benefits. New applicants who are eligible for MA can enroll starting March 1. MinnesotaCare enrollees will transition to MA over a period of six months but will be eligible for MA benefits beginning March 1; coverage will be retroactive.

Current GAMC enrollees will not have to take any action; they should continue to go to their health care providers for services. The GAMC program will end March 1 and Coordinated Care Delivery Systems will be terminated. DHS plans to provide services for new applicants and GAMC enrollees on a fee-for-service basis for an initial period until they enroll in a managed care health plan. MinnesotaCare enrollees who meet MA expansion criteria can continue to go their health plan providers; they are expected to remain enrolled in managed care plans.

DHS will provide information to current GAMC and MinnesotaCare enrollees about the expansion and any actions they may need to take. We will also communicate with our partners in detail about the implementation schedule, conversion work, worker training and outreach activities. A series of forums with stakeholders will be scheduled and updates will also be posted on the DHS website.

We know that this rapid implementation schedule will require all involved – state, county and tribal workers, health care providers, health plans, advocates and other community partners – to work together and coordinate our efforts so that the transition goes as smoothly as possible for people who need health care.  We look forward to working with you on this initiative.

Wanda,
Are you familiar with the Downtown Coalition for Grief Support? They meet every Saturday morning @ 10:00 a.m. This is an ongoing group. The first 30 min. is devoted to a speaker. After that participants go to their respective groups__one each for child loss, spouse/partner loss, and family/friend loss. I happen to be facilitating now. Currently the meetings are at St. Olaf's Catholic Church, Minneapolis.
