+ important note

Hello all,

Hope you all have been reveling in the joys of summer. Time continues to be a
mystery….can’t believe it’s almost fall!

Attached is the flyer for the September 10th program. In addition we have had
car pooling requests. Probably the best way to accommodate this
request is to have those of you who need rides and those of you who would be
willing to provide rides respond to this email with a “reply all” and
give your name, “need” or “provide”, contact info and metro area. That
way you all can contact each other individually to arrange transportation.
Hopefully this makes sense and that it works!

Again, thank you in advance for sending this info out to your various email
lists!

Peace,

INMH Steering Committee

The FCNN Education Committee is looking for a presenter to do a workshop on legal issues for nurses. One name was given to me, Marlene Garvis, an adjunct professor at Hamline Law and the U of M Nursing School.  Any thoughts, information or suggestions will be appreciated.  Thanks, Pat

I am familiar with Ms. Garvis and I know she gives seminars on this topic very often.  I have not attended one though.  She is a nurse attorney.

I believe Marlene comes from a defense background.  Might I suggest that you have both a defense attorney and a plantiffs attorney.  It might be interesting to hear what the plantiff looks for in deciding when to take a case against a doctor, hospital or nurse.  I know an attorney who is also a nurse who would be an excellent presenter.  Very likable and not at all strident.  Let me know if you would like her name.

                        Who Am I Now?

(Embedded image moved to file: pic10540.jpg)Mary
Kowalski"One of my favorite elements of ALVA is that it encourages
participants to come to terms with who they are now,"
says Mary Kowalski (at left), facilitator at Century College and part of
the team that develop the ALVA curriculum. "I know from
my own experience, that things are different as you go through the
transitions of later life. And taking charge of how you
want to live this part of your life makes all the difference."

"I started the class thinking of myself simply as
'retired,' says ALVA participant, Peg Kavaney. "I left the class with a whole
new identity, as a civic leader. ALVA helped me use my
brain, have a little stress, and learn."

According to Annette Contos, "The class taught me to try
a ready, set, go mentality rather than a go, ready, set mentality. Not
easy! But it is going to pay off in the long run."

                        ALVA PROFILE
                        Joy Gordon
(Embedded image moved to file: pic26023.jpg)John Gordon
Joy took the ALVA class to improve her leadership skills
and to bring more of those skills into her work and her life in her
community. The class changed her view of leadership. She
realized how complex it is.

"I learned about the qualities that make a good leader:
vision, passion, commitment, persistence, willingness to listen and the
ability to empower others," says Joy. "Leadership is more
than just taking charge. It's about creating a space for openness
that helps people feel safe in sharing their views and
allows a greater vision to emerge."

"I grew as a person as a result of the class," Joy added.
The class caused her to look inside and see what she needed to work
on as a leader. "As a leader, you have to be self-aware.
You have to know your strengths and weaknesses. You don't want
anything to get in the way."

"Individuals with a mature sense of civic identity are fully engaged,

fully human citizens of their communities. . . . They see their role in

life as contributing to the long-term greater good. And perhaps most

importantly, they have the courage to act."

Hi Pat,

Did you try the U of M Dental School?  They used to have free or sliding scale dental services.

What are Thyroid Diseases and How do They Affect Women?

Your thyroid (THY-roid) is a small gland found at the base of your
neck, just
below your Adam's apple. The thyroid produces hormones that control
the rate of
many activities in your body, including how fast you burn calories
and how fast
your heart beats. Millions of people in the U.S. have thyroid
diseases. Most of
them are women. Thyroid disorders that can affect women include:
                   Disorders that cause hyperthyroidism
                   Disorders that cause hypothyroidism
                   Thyroid nodules
                   Thyroiditis

             What Women Want to Know
Highlights from the womenshealth.gov call center

We received an e-mail from a woman who had taken an HIV test through
a service
that sends the results through the mail. The first test results she
received said
she tested positive for HIV. She took two more tests that said she
tested negative
for HIV. She wanted to know why the first test would come back with
a positive
result if she was getting negative results now.

We provided her with online resources on HIV testing and told her
that if, after
reading this information, she was still in need of additional
resources, she
             should contact us again.

Hi Gwen-
Someone from your co. returned my call last week re: finding help for a member of my congregation ( I am a Parish Nurse).
As the member is unable to pay for help, the contact from your co suggested Pinnacle services. Pinnacle informed the person from my cong that there are no services completely covered by disability or medicaid. It's been cut off due to economics.
Do you know of any entity that has any funds to help this person? She had heart surgery and has been left at home without support- needs cleaning and cooking assistance mainly. She lives in Champlain - quite a ways from most of our church members.
Thanks for your time.
