~Trend Test: Big Handbags
~Fashion in your neck of the woods

----------------------------------------------
*Trend Test: Big Handbags
Are you ready to trade in your precious little bag for something more
substantial? Now's the time because handbags this Fall are bigger and
bolder. Get a first look at what's it like to own one, what to wear it
with and the pros and cons of this trend.
"Trend Test" is a new monthly feature that gives you a firsthand look at
what it's really like to own a must-have. It's a pretty simple setup: I
buy an item and then take it out for a spin to see how it works for real
women. I'll tell you what I think, give you some ideas how to integrate it
into your wardrobe and point out some good online resources to purchase
the item.
http://fashion.about.com/library/weekly/aa083100a.htm
*Fashion in your neck of the woods
Here in Dallas, women tote Kate Spades, bleach their hair a creamy golden
"Dallas blond," wear capris and sandals and cruise around town in
bigger-is-better SUVs. Texas fashionistas yawn at trendy Western revivals
like turquoise and cowboy hats and cringe to think that people around the
world actually believe all Texans live on ranches, wear cowboy boots and
drive Cadillac convertibles with Longhorns on the hood.
So what's fashion like in your neck of the woods? Share a bit about your
region's style, the biggest misconceptions others hold about your fair
city, maybe even point out major trends that never seem to fly where you
live. Submit today!
http://fashion.about.com/blsubregion.htm
*Short hair: Love it or leave it?
Pros: "When I went short, I got lots of flattering remarks. (Even from
men) The best one was 'you look so much younger'."
http://forums.about.com/ab-fashion/messages?lgnF=y&msg=321.18
Cons: "I think women cut their hair short to feel liberated from
controlling men. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's my opinion."

American Fashion Awards 2000
The Council of Fashion Designers of America awarded top honors to Oscar de
la Renta, Helmut Lang, Miguel Adrover and more. Take the "Fashion Pop
Quiz" to see if you know which nominee set off a trend that appeared on
every wrist.

*How do you say that?
If you've ever been stumped by designer names, you'll love this nifty new
resource on the site, in collaboration with the French Guide, Laura
Lawless. Listen to the audio to get the correct pronunciation down pat on
Jean Paul Gaultier, Givenchy, Balmain and more. Look for Italian designer
names to be added soon.
http://fashion.about.com/blpronounce.htm
*Men in skirts
It started out innocently enough: a poster in the forum asks about a male
musician spotted in a skirt. As all really good discussions usually go,
this one has gotten heated, insulting, and downright interesting. Is it
cool for guys to wear skirts? Is this the next big thing? Is a kilt a
skirt? Should employers discriminate against skirt-wearing guys? A sample:
"I am a male, I am hetero, I have a girlfriend, and I WEAR SKIRTS." Check
out the hottest thread we've ever had and put in your two cents'worth.
http://about.delphi.com/ab-fashion/messages?msg=203.1
*Stylish tip-offs
Do you know how to get a red wine stain out of your favorite silk blouse?
Is there a magic formula that's worked for you in organizing your closet?
Think all you need for summer is a tan and some bright lipstick?
It's time to share the wealth of your fashion knowledge with the rest of

*Get fit
Ever wear a size 6 in one label and a 10 in another? The only way to find get
great fit online is to know your
measurements and
consult the e-tailer's size charts. Even men's sizes, which seem easy because
size usually = measurement, get tricky
with sleeve,
inseam and waist numbers. So grab a friend and a tape measure and find out the
right way to find your size.

-------------------Best of the Net----------------------
Last month I awarded the first Best of the Net award -- to Costume National for
the designer category. The company has a
quietly
elegant site that doesn't take forever to wade through or have a lot of
unrelated information. What it does have are
photos of some
of the Fall/Winter designs (displayed quite ingeniously for quick navigation),
shopping information and a brief
biography of
designer Ennio Capassa. Take a look for yourself at
http://www.costumenational.com/home.html
This month's Best of the Net award goes to a very different type of site: a
vintage online store. Vintage Vixen is an
exceptional
site and manages to do what e-tailers with whiz-bang technology and jillions of
dollars can't seem to -- offer a
knowledgeable,
entertaining and efficient shopping experience. The shopping portion of the site
is organized by size, so you don't have
to wade
through
stuff that won't fit. It includes a "rarity" rating, care instructions and
garment details. In the FAQs and history
sections there
are items of interest, from which celebrities collect vintage to details about
the different eras that Vintage Vixen
carries
(Victorian through the 1970s) This site is a must-see.
http://www.vintagevixen.com
(Note to online store owners, webmasters, etc.: Naturally, you think your own
site should be designated Best of the Net.
But please
don't bother emailing me to tell me how much you deserve the award. I tend to be
tremendously put off by self-promotion
and hype. If
you are truly the Best of the Net in fashion, don't worry -- I'll find you.)
-----------------And the winner is-------------------
Congrats to Elly, who won the drawing for "Swell," Cynthia Rowley's new book.
Thanks to everyone who entered. You'll get
other
chances to win because, I'll be giving more stuff away (maybe some makeover
software) next month. Stay tuned and watch

announcement here!

-----------------Work it!------------------
I'm always getting letters from readers who are trying to break into the
industry. While there may be some genuine
prodigies in the
group, the majority of people who enter the fashion industry do it the old
fashioned way -- through education, hard
work, talent and
contacts.
I also believe you should do an apprenticeship. The job description probably
won't say it's an apprenticeship. You might
be called
an intern or an assistant. (Some people call this "paying your dues") This is a
great time to find a mentor to teach you
the ropes
-- all the ins and outs of the business that you won't learn in school. A mentor
can become your biggest champion
throughout your
career, and many seasoned pros like to pass on their knowledge to a willing
apprentice.
Of course, you may not bond with your first boss, but you can still learn an
incredible amount from him or her. (I found
out how NOT
to do business from the lousy ones)
Spend some time early in your career with someone who works directly in the
career path you're pursuing. Not only will
it give you a
clearer vision of what it takes to succeed, it will also dispel the myth that
this is a purely glamorous business.
You don't need a question to write me. My mailbox is always open and I look
forward to your emails.

-----------------Viva Las Vegas------------------
About.com was in Vegas for the first Red Ball Oct. 7-10. Part of the consumer
event involved panel discussions and I was a lucky
guide who was chosen to debate the future of online shopping. The moderator for
our event was Star Jones (The View) and our guest
celebrity was Kathy Najimy (Veronica's Closet) Other guides were Frank Fiore,
Online Shopping http://onlineshopping.about.com ;
Mike
Killian Credit/Debt Management http://credit.about.com and
Glenna Morton, Interior Decorating http://interiordec.about.com
Glenna has a great recap of the discussion on her site and pictures at
http://interiordec.about.com/library/weekly/aa101199.htm
(I'm the blond sitting next to Kathy)
What did I take away from the panel? (1) We all (including Star and Kathy) want
to be able to buy beautiful clothes that fit (2)
Technology will have a difficult time replacing the physical and emotional
pleasure derived from brick-and-mortar shopping (3) Ben
Nye (theatrical makeup) makes a great face powder -- very fine consistency and
good enough for everyday use (the makeup artist
that
did
my face was the best!) Look for a link to buy coming soon on Beauty at

How many time do we have to hear "_____ is the new black"? I've put together a
list of tired, overused fashion phrases and words,

hate and want it included in FASHIONESE, please

-----------------Readers Ask------------------
Q: I will be going to my first opera. I have no clue what to wear -
Anna,
A. There usually isn't a dress code for attending the opera, unless
you're
attending opening night, which is when the big arts patrons dress to the
nines.
In a metropolitan area, there will likely be people more dressed up than
other
parts of the country. I'd suggest you do what most of us do when in
doubt -- go
for the little black dress. If you have something sleeveless or short
sleeve,
just add a shawl, wear your hair and makeup more special than usual and
choose
appropriately dressy shoes and handbag. If it's like most events, you'll
see
people wearing everything from jeans to tuxes. - Cynthia
