Description

Fred Harvey, distinguished creator of western hospitality and gourmet fast-food, civilizer of the Wild West, deserves his own discussion group! This place is for those who wish to talk about anything related to Fred Harvey, including, but not limited to his life, his company, general history, anecdotes, specific Santa Fe and other depots he served, whether in urban metropolises like Kansas City and Chicago, or isolated railroad outposts like Ash Fork. There are, of course, endless points to discuss, such as the famous Harvey Girls, Harvey Houses with their Hotels, Lunch Rooms, Restaurants, News Stands, Indian Buildings and Detours, the Grand Canyon, and Dining Cars, partnership with the railroad, the exposure of Americans to the rich Native American cultures of the West, etc. Then there are collectibles such as postcards, brochures, menus, tablewear, jewelry, and other souveniers. We can't leave out the distinctive architecture styles of his many Harvey Houses, or Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter, his long-time architect and designer/decorator. And how could we forget the Judy Garland movie, "The Harvey Girls"? There are a couple great books on the subject as well, such as the one by Lesley Poling-Kempes.

Feel free to share photos from any Fred Harvey sites you have visited or other information you have learned from museums, or personal research. We appreciate those who in various locales have tried to preserve the special Harvey heritage of their communities for us to discover and enjoy. Reviving the refined and elegant "Harvey Manner" regarding first class service isn't a bad idea today, so let's join together to keep his legacy alive.

Re: Fred Harvey and the America Southwest exhibit
This link doesn't work anymore. Supposedly the artist did a painting of a Harvey Girl. Did anybody happen to save a copy of it? ...or any of the others?
