I am looking for information (websites, books,
periodicals, etc.) on primitive furniture. Specifically, I am
interested in antique pieces made by amateurs or modern pieces made
to look just a little "off". This would be furniture that makes use
of one or more of the following:
- heavy paint, rather than fine finishes
- rounded corners, either from age or for effect
- uneven angles, again due to age or intentional skewing
- inappropriate thicknesses of wood, making the pieces seem
monumental and needlessly heavy
- a lack of skilled joinery (no dovetails, etc)
- (if cabinetry) doors held shut by primitive closures
- interiors vented by metal screened or barred mini-windows
- use of bad grades of wood, or wood recycled from other uses
- pieces built without a blueprint, with function or precision in
door and drawer construction
What I'm NOT looking for:
- fine furniture with a little battered hardware added to appear
rustic or aged
- mission, arts & crafts, Shaker nor Amish styles
- cute pieces with hearts cut into them
I'm basing this search on a show I saw long ago, featuring huge
cabinets with single doors, heavy colored paint, and distressed
finishes. These looked like items you'd shut Frankenstein's monster
into, rather than beautiful pieces for storing sweaters. I also love
the look of old farm furniture, with so many coats of paint that the
edges look rounded. I am eager to begin creating such pieces, but
I'm keen to hear of theres who may have already touched on this
theme.
Thanks!
Measure twice, cut once, and cover your mistakes with lots of paint.
