Cole,
One of the problems with the door frame, is that it was never
designed to hold weight on it's side. Some will work, OK
though. I never tried it, so, a lot depends on your structure.
I am assuming a F/P door (frame & panel.) Depending on
how it's put together, the width, how much padding, etc, I
suppose that it is possible. Modern doors will NOT hold up
to the use. The plywood will work loose over time.
The over all finish dimensions are:
Seat: ~24" wide, ~18" high
Back: About ~24" tall, tilted at about 17 degrees
Length: Variable, 20" to 7' is common (chair, couch)
Framing can be a pain. The key note is to make it strong.
A 7 ' couch, 4 people, should hold 1000 pounds safely. If they
all sit down at once, this gives an high impact. I would design
for 4000 pounds. Needless to say, notches, M/T joints and
large screws, are recommended. The sides and feet need to
endure large torsional stresses, also.
I built one out of Oak and Ash about 30 years ago. Still solid,
but the kids sort'a destroyed the finish. 12/4 oak rails and back.
Ash turnings for the back, and Oak turnings on the sides. 12/4
Oak turnings on the sides. The legs were 12/4 x 3" solid pieces.
I think the wood cost about $300 at the time.
