As to finishing cherry, for this application I would use an oil or an
oil/varnish finish. I would suggest you get a book for details but
simplistically for the oil you rub/flood the surface with I would
suggest 100% tung oil wait for 20 to 30 minutes rub off surplus wait
for a few hours repeat but with less oil, wait for a day or two repeat
with even less oil. For the oil/varnish mix you paint on a mixture of
a finishing oil such as tung, a varnish and a solvent proportions
variable but start at 1:1:1 use about 3 or 4 coats then wax. A
darker shellac finish (mix your own from flakes) would also look nice.
There are too many instruction cautions etc to cover fully here.
