I have only caught part of this thread..
But I do know I have a pandigital wand scanner that is great and the
latest hot item is the Flip Pal.
I would check these two out...

What would be the best way to try and find living relatives in another state?
Since so many use cell phones now and no home phone number then I guess phone
books would be of no help.

Thanks

I'd say asking other relatives if they know of anyone or just googling the name
you are searching for relatives for.

Hi Robert & Brenda

Bob, first... the scanner itself simply writes the images it scans to
your designated device. There is also the device driver required. If
you want to process the scanned image you should use whatever you have
been using and things will work fine. If you are attempting to OCR the
documents I recommend you don't. Especially when working with old
documents, their poor condition, peculiar fonts this is a nearly
impossible task and is not worth the effort (Error rates are huge even
when small, poorly financed firms like Google attempt it.)

Brenda... I recommend you use a good digital camera and tripod if
necessary. You can use it without flash assuming ambient lighting is
adequate. That minimizes your touching the documents and will give as
good or better images than many scanning devices. My OCR comments above
apply here as well.

For the truly adventuresome interested in learning how to convert images
to OCR I have published a couple of links here:
http://www.many-roads.com/2008/08/31/how-to-ocr-documents/

Bon chance! Viel Glueck....

Pax Vobiscum,

I can only tell you what I do. Since cell phone does not charge for long
distance, I check the online phone book for all the names I am looking for
in that area. When I take some time and call the ones who have phone numbers
explain who I am and ask if they are aware of anyone in their family working
on the family history. If so, I give them my name and address for them to
contact me. I only ask for the name of the person if they know someone is
working on it. I also have a picture showing the mother and father or their
names in the middle and the children around it. I send them to them also on
regular paper. Most people will not give you family members addresses. Then
I copy the street addresses for the ones I could not contact and I have a
form letter explaining who I am and what I am doing. I also ask that if they
have any old pictures of the family, I will send them the money to have them
copied for me. I have gotten good results from this including pictures of my
father;s grandmother, Dad was born in 1916 and died in 1988 and most of his
great aunts and uncles. I also managed to get two pictures of two of his
great great uncles. It is worth a try. It has worked well for me. If you
would like to see a copy of the picture I send, email me and I will email
you one back to show what I mean.

Gee, you're right, Donna. In fact, I've heard that the White Pages are no longer
going to be printed since the info will be on the Net. The only solution I can
think of is to try to track down and write to a common relative (older?) who
might know and be able to help. I've found that keeping track of cousins'
grandchildren, etc. is more difficult than finding ancestors in census records
in the 1800s! Ha. BTW, the last census did not ask for much info beyond name,
sex and nationality. How will that impact future generations of genealogists? I
suppose we are leaving electronic 'paper' trails that can be researched and
found. Maybe??? Lots of issues going on here. It is important to try to track
current relatives and (in my opinion) to print or write out as much info as
possible in hard copies. I trust my filing cabinets more than I trust the Net or
my computer.... Any others have ideas about this?

Do you just call everyone with the same last name? Because I do not know any one
person but I know their are some somewhere. I am working on the Duke name in
Kentucky and they are all over everywhere

I start in the area that the family originally lived. Usually some of them
are still there. I only go out of the area if someone tells me they lived in
other areas or I find something while doing research on the family. If you
know the family member moved to a different area and you find Social
Security records that show that person died in another area, then check that
area for the last names. Try to follow their children down. Most times if
you are looking for information and pictures, the oldest daughter would have
them and they passed to her daughters.

Katarina, not sure if this will help or not. But I emailed the caretaker of
a cemetery where my grandfather was buried. He helped me but letting me know
that he had no type of stone, and it was a single plot. He was re-married
for a year before he died. I wasn't sure about the stone, as a volunteer
told me something about his stone was on someone else's grave. I had his
dates, but was still curious about any info I might find on him.
I hope you find what you're looking for.

What would be the best way to try and find living relatives in another
state? Since so many use cell phones now and no home phone number then I
guess phone books would be of no help.

Thanks
Donna

As I mentioned in an earlier post
(http://www.many-roads.com/2012/01/29/data-gathering-tools-new-to-me/), recently
I came across a VERY promising research tool to assist in gathering, sorting,
and sharing research source materials. That tool is called Mendeley-
http://www.mendeley.com/features/. It enhances, compliments, and can even
replace tools like Zotero. It, also, links interactively with desktop word
processing tools like LibreOffice/OpenOffice and perhaps even M$Office (although
I don't own a copy of that to test). Mendeley, also, allows me to share its
content across multiple platforms including my Linux Laptops, my iPad and,
according to the provider, Mac and Windows. Finally, the tool itself tracks,
inventories and gathers information from within Firefox and similar web browsers
or directly from my Desktop, if I happen to have my information there.

Oh, and before I forget... did I mention the tool allows for socializing
selected information and publications (individually or through Groups of Common
Interest). Oh yes, and basic Mendeley usage is Free.

Two quick additional items:

1. If you are performing genealogy research and want to join in sharing
resources and source materials with me, please join Mendeley and my Genealogy
Researchers Group (Note: this group requires a Mendeley Account to View:
http://www.mendeley.com/groups/1807351/genealogy-researchers/papers/).
2. If you are interested in following some of my exploits in using the Mendeley
Toolsuite you can my publicly available 'research' (meaning you don't need to
use Mendeley to see these here:
http://www.many-roads.com/2012/02/01/prussian-mennonite-research-materials/

I will share more details as I learn more. Please feel free to pass this
message to others you feel might benefit.

Abel was born in 1847 -- I think in Mississippi. He married Julia Denley and
his mother's name was Hester Cannon. Any help is appreciated!

You probably already have these,
but I like to see all of the picture
when looking for a missing puzzle-piece -

1880 Calhoun County, Mississippi (all born MS:MS:MS)
Boatwright, Abel K/33, Julia/23, George/2

NOTE: Choctaw County is the second county south of Calhoun County
(Webster County in between) in northern central Mississippi -
http://www.msgw.org/ct-map.htm

1870 Township 20 Range 9, Choctaw, Mississippi
(in the household of Lavicy Edwards/56)
Boatright, Abel K/25

1860 Township 21 (P.O. Belfontain), Choctaw, Mississippi
Boatwright, Hester A/42:TN, Lorenzo D/26:AL, Francis A/21:AL,
(), Charles/20:AL, James M/15:AL, Abel/10:MS
Girtruda Dumas/14 * {same surname as neighbor]

1870 Township 21 Range 10, Choctaw, Mississippi
Boatwright, Hester A/50, James M/23
Cannon, Susan/22, Anderson B/19

1850 Subdivision 23, Choctaw, Mississippi [indexed as BADTRIGH]
Boatright, Hesteran/35:TN, Loranza/14:AL, Jane/12:AL,
(), Francis/11:AL/female, Charles/9:AL, James/5:AL

Looks like Abel might have CLAIMED to be born 1847,
but his 1860 age and non-presence in 1850 may mean that
he really wasn't born until after the 1850 census.
Which means that MISTER Boatright must have been around somewhere.
(No - I retract that - a widow could have a child and then
later claim that the child was the offspring of her late husband.)

I found a marriage record for Abel & Julia (1872),
but I presume that you already have it.

I find land records for a Hester A Boatright in 1881
in Choctaw County Mississippi (39.94 acres) - also find
1880 Sumner, Mississippi
Boatright, Hester L/70:TN, James M/32:AL

1840 - on a "fishing expedition" in ALABAMA -
there are 4 hits on surname BOAT*RI*T
(this may be too restrictive for possible name manglements).
Looking for >1 male adult, >1 female adult, >3 children under age 5.
Only one has three (or more) children under the age of 5;
and, in fact, the only one to have a female under age 5 -

1840 Conecuh, Alabama
James Boatright - 3....1.......-1....1.......
3 males age<5, 1 female age<5, 2 adults age 30-39

NOTE: adjacent to the census-line for David CANNON
David Cannon - 1....1.......-13..1........
(younger wife, 3 young girls, only 1 young boy)

A possible connection here - BOATRIGHT and CANNON ?

Hmm - an Ancestry.com Public Member Tree has a
Hester Cannon (b.1813 TN, who married a Mr. Boatwright)
with a brother David Cannon born 1804 in SC -
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/30808446/person/12311255355?ssrc=

I did not do a comprehensive search, but I did find a
DAVID CANNON born circa 1804 SC in the 1850 census,
and it does fit the age-pattern of the 1840 census (above) -
1850 Monroe, Alabama
Cannon, David/46, Leah/37, Annie E/15, Loreto/14, Mary/13,
(_), Lander/10, Corel/8, Susan/6, Martha/4, Anderson/1

Only circumstantial evidence, but maybe something to check out?

- Tom Knox

Most scanners that have to SLIDE or ROLL across old documents are NOT permitted
in libraries or archives, due to the fact they may damage the documents. The
FlipPal scanner is, however allowed in most of these repositories. It is best to
check ahead to be sure the repository you are going to allows scanning equipment
of any kind brought in and used.
I have the FlipPal & love it, as it operates on 4 regular or rechargable AA
batteries and is lightweight!

I have the vupoint magic wand. It comes with a 4 GB sdhc and USB cord to
download it to your PC. Check out HSC TV for a video on it. It will also
cscan pictures behind glass well and you sure do not want someone to take
them out as most as stuck to the glass.

i have a friend who is a writer.  she tells all of us that when we write
something make a copy and send it to yourself that way it will have a date on
it.  also on the front of the envelope write what the envelope contains then
file it unopened then if you have any problems take it into court unopened and
let the judge open it.  she does this with any change in her book or rewrite
that way she has proof it is her writing.   this came in handy when another so
called author ripped off a series that she writes.  she changed names etc but
basically it was her series and the judge found in her favor.  this works
with drawings and anything that you want to protect from being stolen.

You're friend is using the old, less secure means of claiming authorship of
literary works, music, intellectual rights, etc.

Here's some Q & A on it:
http://www.socan.ca/jsp/en/pub/music_users/copyright_law.jsp

You can copyright songs in groups and it costs less. I don't know about
writings.

I don't have any connections for you -- sorry -- and I don't know about 7
stars, but am wondering if there is any connection with Eastern Star? My
grandmother was in that organization.

The only other 7 stars I know about are in the Bible -- book of the
Revelation of John -- 7 stars stood for the 7 pastors over the 7 churches
in Asia Minor spoken to prophetically. Somehow I doubt her brooch referred
to them ; )

My thought would likewis (like Annie suggested) would be that it might be a
membership pin to the Eastern Stars. I had several Female ancestors who were
members of Eastern Star.

if you are not familiar with the Eastern Star organization. it was a sub-set of
the Massonic organization. Membership was usually obtained, as it was explainded
to me by my local Masonic temple, by the Lady having a Father or husband who was
a Masonic Member as well as other criteria that needed to be met for membership.

In my case, my grandmother's membership could sponsor my membership if I
was interested - I wasn't. There was a pre-Eastern Star group for teen
girls -- was it Order of the Rainbow Girls There was one for boys, too,
Order of the DeMolay.

I looked online -- no 7 stars on Eastern Star symbols. Only a pentagram
star.

Thanks for the reply.  Being in both Job's Daughters and Eastern Star, I really
didn't think the stars had anything to do with them, but I did look anyway just
to be sure.  It looks like the stars on the flags families hung in their
windows during WWII for their servicemen which is why I just feel so certain it
has something to do with military.  I'm having it appraised so maybe I can find
out about something that way.  Thanks again for replying......phd

I didn't even think about the military stars! When my son was in college,
on the outside of dorm window sills were bronze stars in memory of every
student or alumni who died while serving in WWI through the Vietnam War.
It was my understanding that the student had lived in that particular dorm
room -- I'm not positive on that part, but I think that was the case. It
was a sobering experience to stand in the quads and look around at the
number of bronze stars.

Let us know what you find out from the appraisal.

For those who are hoping to conduct Quebec genealogical research, I hope my most
recent post will be useful. You may find my article on using and finding Cyprien
Tanguay's texts at:

http://www.many-roads.com/?p=11086

I recognize that this is a fairly rudimentary article but perhaps it will be
helpful. Please send it along to others who might benefit.

I've added to my tree very few of TAnguay's excerpts because I prefer to have
the actual church documents in my tree.

But nonetheless, living in Montreal, Quebec, yes this can be very usefull too..

Good luck to all who are/will be using it.

Lucie :)

Hi Lucie

I agree but Tanguay certainly provides a great place to find those
churches from which to source original documents for those of us who do
not know where their ancestors lived in the 1600 and 1700s.

For those interested in first person accounts of historical events, I have just
published a posting on the aftermath of WW2 for part of my family (the Wedhorn
family). I have spent more than 6 months gathering the data and information
associated with this first person account. The Wedhorn Expulsion (Vertreibung)
account may be found at:
