おまんらゲンキかえ!?
With exuberant excitement I bring my voice to you as new Genki Seinenkai representative for the 2010 Tosaben Musical!
Of course we still have plenty of time to mull over the last musical and prepare for the new one, but it never hurts to brainstorm early!
In due time we will have more sessions and actions but for now, we need a new story!
So I hereby call out for all entries to next years' Tosaben Musical title and storyline!!
The Tosaben Musical has come a long way- it goes back all the way to 1995, where it begun with a slightly fantastical story of John Manjiro.
It has since then evolved, and in recent years it has been tradition to meld a Tosa story with a Western twist.
Here are the stories from previous years:
2009 Makino and the Beanstalk (Makino Tomitaro is a famous botanist in Kochi, there is a botanical gardens named after him in Godaisan)
2008 Oryo and the 8 rules of love (Oryo is Ryoma Sakamoto's wife)
2007 Hercules and the 88 Temples Pilgrimage
2006 Yamauchi Antony and Chiyopatra (Antony and Cleopatra, and the Lord Yamauchi story)
2005 John Manjiro's Magical Adventure (John Manjiro and The Wizard of Oz)
2004 Romeo and Juliet's Yosakoi (Yosakoi and the R&J love stories)
2003 Tosa's Cinderella
2002 Ryomantic (Ryoma's love story)
2001 Kaguya-hime no koi
2000 Yamamomotaro (Yamamomo fruit and Momotaro!?)
1999 Kochi's new Hempai
1998 Tosa's Konjaku Monogatari
1997 Omikoshi Help (?)
1996 John Manjiro('s slightly revised story)
1995 John Manjiro('s slightly revised story)
Just some guidelines for the entries-
Please submit a title, or a rough title, along with a brief synopsis and if stories and characters are borrowed, a basic history of them (eg: 2009 Who is Makino Tomitaro? What is the beanstalk?)
If you have more ideas:
characters - we need quite a number of characters, some big, some small
sponsors - in the past we haven't had many sponsors and financing the production is always difficult. If you have any ideas for sponsors - esp you CIRs, please shoot!
Other notes:
-you need not be restricted to tradition and merge a japanese story with a western story, feel free to suggest something ORIGINAL!
-even though we have the word "Musical" in it, we have often gone by without singing, but music and dances is almost a must! Keep that in mind while you think of the themes.
Any questions and suggestions, please feel free to throw it my way! 090-2890-2046
Be genki!!

Hey Everyone -

Just wanted to let you all know how much my supervisor, his family, and my
Eikaiwa class enjoyed the Yusahara and Tosa performances. Last night at class
they couldn't stop talking about how "subarashi" everything was. Makino's
performance and Tosa Ben was subarashi, the sets were subarashi, the dancing was
subarashi, the music was subarashi, the costumes were subarashi, the story was
subarashi, ... subarashi, subarashi, SUBARASHI!

They were so impressed, entertained, and delighted to have seen the show. I had
to force class to finish cause it was past time and I wanted to go home after a
loooooong day at work! One of my students even contributed 1 Man to our Genki
cause and my boss said he cried at the end of the Yusahara performance because
he felt so emotional about everyones amazing work together!

OMEDETOU! GENKI people! I am so proud of everyone involved!

KOCHI JETS ARE THE BEST AND THIS TRADITION IS INCREDIBLE! I FEEL SO HONORED TO
HAVE BEEN A PART OF THIS AMAZING CULTURAL AND ARTISTIC COLLABORATION!

Much love and respect to you all,

What can I say?

I have never seen so many tears at a genki after party. Did they slip some group-love potion into our drinks, or what?

Seriously, it was a privilege to work with you all, even if my role was mainly off stage. I forgot to say last night how impressed I am with everyone who volunteers for a role in the musical. I am astounded that many of you, who came to Japan less that a year ago, are able to pull off the feat of acting in a play written in an obscure regional dialect of Japanese. You blow my mind and have my respect.

Now go enjoy your free weekends!

And by the way, I need to get money to some people for props/sets/costumes etc. Please let me know the best way to get you the money. I'm off to Okinawa on Friday, so if you need it before May 10th, let me know ASAP.

Oh, and the final donation tally is 鐃535,757!! I'm not able to tell you the profit yet, but it looks like being about 30%. Not bad!

Otsukare sama deshita!

Hello trusty Genki-ites,

I have a favour to ask some of you. I need at least 3 people to volunteer to come to my place early on Friday night. We need to pick up the hire cars, and despite my many skills, driving 3 cars simulateneously is not one of them

I will need you to come to my place by 6:15pm tomorrow night. I will drive you all to the hire car company, and we will drive back in convoy. After packing the cars we will continue on to Sukumo - I will drive one car, and another 2 volunteers will drive the other cars. It`s a long trip, so I'd like to have at least 2 drivers per car to share the drive.

Please let me know if you are available to

1) Come early to pick up the cars  AND/OR
2) Drive from Kochi City to Sukumo

Make sure you bring your licence!

Cheers

Matt

Only one more day to go!

Just a quick report on our accommodation on Saturday night in Yusuhara. We will all be sleeping in a big room on futons at Yusuhara, all of which is being organised by the lovely Melissa. She is worried that there will not be enough blankets or pillows. She reccommends bringing sleeping bags/pillows to make sure you have one for yourself. Its not imperative for everyone to do so, so don't go out of your way. If half a dozen people can sleep in their bags, that will leave enough blankies for everyone else.

Thanks

Hey everyone,

Just some details about the west side tour. We are all set to meet at my house on Friday night at 7pm for a 7:30pm departure. We will then drive down Route 56 to Sukumo. It makes no sense for people living on the west side to come to the city, only to turn around and drive back past their house. So, we are going to pick you up along the way. I just need to organise who to pick up where. My suggestions are:

Hannah - Pick you up on the 56 in Tosa City.
Nish - Pick you up on the 56 in Susaki.
Callum - Pick you up on the 56 at Kure.

Can you all let me know what would be the best landmark to meet you at?

If anyone else would like a pickup (Lisa M, Son, Ane-Marie...) please let me know. Bear in mind that you will then not have your car in the city on Sunday night, so you will have to get home by other means. I know that Claudia and Martin will be driving from Sukumo to the city and back...perhaps you could get a ride with them...

If you have any other questions about tour details, let me know.

Matt

What a great weekend! All your hard work has finally paid off!

We made a total of 鐃164,458 and played to a total of 300 people on the first weekend. Woohooo!!! We are on a par with last year for numbers, but ahead on money. So well done! Our second weekend is always our best, so the only way is up!

I also need to confirm a few things. I would like to pay people for the highway tolls they paid to get to Tosa-cho. I reimbursed most people at Muroto, apart from the people on the 'early' bus to the West  If you still need some money, let me know the amount and I'll give it to you next weekend?

Also, I need to know costumes/make-up/sets costs. Could people who have spent money on these things please let me know the amount you spent? I would love to know all expenses this week so I can announce the final profit at the after party.

I know you must be tired, but one more weekend and we're done!! Then we can all go into genki withdrawal...believe me, it does happen!

Cheers

Matt

All right, everyone! It's the moment that at least half of you have been waiting for: the music timings for the fight scene have been worked out! So here's how it's going to be:

0:00 - 0:05 Get to your places.
0:05 - 0:23 Part 1
0:24 - 0:26 Get your shit for fencing or get out of the way.
0:27 - 0:35 Fence!
0:38 - 0:46 Part 3 Intro
0:47 - 0:57 All the rest of Part 3.

Music fades out by 1:00.

Now, for plants/miscellaneous good guys falling out of the battle. Peter, Son, Kenta, and Mitch: You'll fall down and stay down after your first sequence (so for Peter and Kenta, you're TKO after 3B, and Son and Mitch are TKO after 3A). Kemper, Daniel, Dwaine, Cal, Josh: You guys will all do both 3A and 3B (in whatever order I assigned you) before falling out. When you fall out of battle, you'll sort of drag yourselves into the center of the stage while your weed partners make their way to the fringes and start forming the Semi-Circle of Death (that's why you guys closest to the center are being taken out of the battle first).

Make sense? Good. If not, you know where I am.

Hey Bernadette - You might be wondering how to wear that shirt with the elastic
on it....

Here it is:
- Fold the the collar of the shirt out so that the buttons don't show.
- Cross the corners of the shirt in front above your waist line around back.
- Stretch the elastic piece to meet the other corner of the shirt at your back,
secure with safety pin to fit snugly around your high waist, tuck up any excess
material or elastic.

- The shirt will probably gape open at the chest. I attached a small gold safety
pin under the front collar of the shirt behind the buttons, use that to pin the
top closed at your chest. Try to pin it from the inside so that it doesn't show.

I suggest that you keep the Apron on the costume during the entire show. I think
it is cute and adds to the interesting look of the costume as well as adding
color.

Ok, if you have any questions, please email me. I will not be at tech rehearsal
or on tour. Break a Leg! I look forward to seeing the show!

Thanks,t.

Hey Matt - I trust you got the costume pieces back.

Thai Pants: I have added big leaf adornments sewn onto the waist tie. These will
hang down kinda like chaps over the front of your legs. To tie the pants: tie
from back to front after gathering the excess over to one side and folding
across your waist to fit them to your size. The leafs should fall in place.

Plant Cape: No need to tie corner to corner since it is rectangle in shape. Lay
out flat as is, drape around your neck, cross in the front of your chest, tie
around your back. Fluff leaves out where necessary.

Sash: Drape over your shoulder. If you feel you need to you can secure the sash
at the top of your shoulder with a safety pin or zip tie to the Cape.

Leg Topiary - Secure with zip ties to ankle just above the tendon, not on the
tendon. Not too tight so that it hurts, but not too loose so that they flop
around. You should still be able to move your ankle freely. Remember to zip the
tie so that they don't fall off during the show. I have also included green
elastic which can be measured and cut to your own calf size to to secure the
plant at the top of your calf.

Remember Black Knee High socks ( footless socks or leg warmers if you want to be
barefoot) - These will serve to look like boots under the Leg topiary.

I was unable to create shoulder "thingys" without having your shirt on hand to
sew them to. The costume will go without.

OK, I think that is all. If you have any questions please call or email me. I
will not be at tech rehearsal or on tour. If you need any costume help Lisa will
be on hand to help you out. Break a Leg! I look forward to seeing the show!

Thanks, t.

Hey people - Hope you all received your costumes pieces by now. There may be
some questions about how to wear them or what not.... here are some details:

Plant people:

Michelle - I wasn't able to find any droopy sakura like the ones that you
brought to the retreat. Is it possible to find those where you bought the others
and give them to Lisa and Katy for their Plant capes?

- Plant Cape Top : These are rectangle in shape so after further examination I
decided that it is best that they are not folded over and tied corner to corner,
with the exception of Michelle's (which is square).
To put on : Just lay out flat w/out tying corners together, drape around your
next, cross in front over chest, tie in back. Fluff the leaves out where
necessary. Remember if leaves fall off to collect and keep them to re-attach
later.

- Green Leg Topiary : attach with zip ties to ankles right above the tendon. Not
too tight so you cannot move, but not too loose that they will flop around.
Remember to zip the tie so they don't fall off during the show. I also included
green elastic which can be cut to the appropriate length of your own calf.
Measure this out and cut a piece which can secure the top of the topiary to your
calf comfortably.

- Hawaiian Floral wrist corsages - to be worn around your wrists.

- I have included some floral hair pins for the girls if you want to wear them.

OK, if you have any questions please email me. I will not be attending tech
rehearsal or on tour with ya'll. Have fun! I look forward to seeing the show!

Thanks, t.

hey guys
I have an idea that might be kind to some of the audience who might come to our show. How about we create a pamphlet that describes the story scene by scene in english and japanese (aside from the one we will give to all audience) for those who are hard of hearing, and for our gaijin friends?

What say you? and who's making the normal pamphlets anyway? (i did it last year but im hoping someone else can take over this time) I've attached last year's pamphlets for reference.

Hey you two! Hope you had a nice 3 day weekend.

I wanted to let you know that I will not be in attendance for tech rehearsal. I
have friends coming to visit from America. If there are costume notes, or
adjustments please try to handle it amongst the cast, or if absolutely
necessary, i can work on the costume piece if you re-collect it from the cast
member. I can then pick it up from one of your houses the week following tech
rehearsal to work on it.

Also, I am a bit concerned about glitter infecting the stages. I have already
put glitter on some items, but i ran out quickly as glitter is extremely
difficult to find in Japan. It tends to get all over shedding on everything it
comes in contact with. I have my friends bringing glitter from America but they
will not be here till April 3rd weekend. If I glitter the costumes I will have
to re-claim the pieces after tech rehearsal on the April 4th/5th weekend.

Originally, I wanted to glitter all the plant costumes, but now I am second
guessing. At the very least I would glitter the plant queen and plant general,
but even that seems problematic if you think that stage locations won' t
appreciate it. It is VERY difficult to clean it all up even with very, very
intensive cleaning effort.

If you decide to have the costumes glittered, I will need all costume pieces
collected from all members so that I can come into the city and pick them up at
one conbini location.

Let me know what you think....
thanks, t.

Hey guys! Nice job this weekend! You guys worked your asses off! That is great,
just in time for beginning of bikini season to get those flabby asses back in
shape! (I'm particularly talking about your ass Peter!)

Anyways... A few costume things....

- First, I need pieces of the following people's costumes back because i need to
make adjustments/ finish them. I will come into the city a few times this week.
Please make plans to meet with me so I can pick up your costumes pieces. The
earlier in the week the better so i can get this shit done before the 3 day
weekend. I will be in the city tomorrow night, Tuesday. My email:
tisinat@...

- Second, Please email me any adjustments, recommendations, costume necessities
still needed for your costume that I may have forgotten or that you forgot to
tell me you needed.

- Third. Everyone please be on the look out for a GREEN WIG cheap, borrowed, or
donated.

Costume Pieces I need back-
Plant Queen :
- cape - lengthen waist ties, add glitter
- wings - change arm straps, add glitter
- crown - add glitter

* Plant Queen Costume pieces still needed:
- Market shirt
- Market head scarf
- Green wig

Plant General:
- Pants- add leaves/glitter
- hat - add leaves/glitter

Sueko:
- White shirt - make wrap ties around waist

Lisa: I never saw your green top or what you plan to wear on the bottom. The
other girls are wearing light gold/kakhi skirts, do you have something like that
or do you need me to find you something like that? I also have a green top if
you don't have one to wear.

Personal items to purchase:
Plant boys: try to find green socks somewhere (girls socks from the stocking
shop are OK)
Plant girls: nude color nylons/fishnets
Plant General: Knee high black socks

Thanks for all your work on your costume pieces plant people. You guys rocked
it! Have a great week and get lots of rest this week.

Muchas Gracias,
Tisina T.

Hey guys... I am writing you here cause I don t have your personal email
address:

What time on Sunday can your cast be ready for costume workshop? It would work
great for me if I could have all the plant people ready to go at the same time.
The project will take about and hour and half.

Can I have a scheduled time to do this workshop on Sunday? It would work best if
the entire cast had a scheduled time set aside at the same time to work with
Hank, myself, Lisa and make-up people.

I will come on Sunday for the scheduled time and bring supplies.

Thanks, Much Respect, T.

Hey everyone, Ann here. I have videos of the choreography we learned this
weekend.

NOTE TO MAC USERS: These files are unfortunately in WMV format. Assure that you
have the proper Quicktime plugins before you contact me about a technical issue.

The Ending Dance:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/onmidenw2zv/Ending%20Dance%20(first%20part%20only)\
.wmv This is not all of it, just the part we practiced this weekend.

This link is to Leah and Andrew Durham demonstrating the "battle scene" right
before Makino discovers the Weeds' English vulnerability. Ignore the sword fight
in the middle for now as we haven't learned it yet.

And that's it. If you run into any problems, feel free to contact me through
Facebook or my main email address:
