Just a reminder of the genealogical software discussion forum on YahooGroups

In is a good place for

* discussing programs you are using, and how to get the best out of them
* discussing programs you would like to see
* discussing improvements you would like to see in existing programs
* collaborating in developing programs that are useful for genealogists
* reviewing genealogy software
* announcing and commenting on new versions and programs
* anything else to do with computer programs used for genealogy

When discussing general software, such as word processors, spreadsheets,
databases etc., it is best to stick to the genealogical uses of those programs
-- but sharing ideas on how they can be used for genealogy is good.

This is the siort of thing that is perhaps better discussed on the genealogy
software forum, and I shall copy this there.

Here is information about the Geenalogy Software forum in case anyone would
like to join in:

Most good genealogy programs do have an option to print HTML code for web
pages, but as you say it is fairly limited, and not easy to update.

Free web hosts out there will generally only let you have static pages, and
if you want to run things like PHPGedView you have to pay, thoguh there are
also sites like My Heritage that do let you update things and allow others to
do so, thoguh that seems to be in a proprietary format. I believe it is
possible to upload and download Gedcoms there.

I'm not all that interested in updating my genealogy on the web. I did,
several years ago, upload some family tree pages to my Geocities pages, but
Geocities was taken over by Yahoo, and it became very unreliable. At one time
it was down for two months, or at least my pages were, so I moved them to
another site, and updated it there, but did not move the family tree, which
by then was already out of date.

I see the main purpose in posting family tree information on the Web as not
being to have a complete family tree on the Web, but rather letting others
know what you have so that they can get in touch and you can share
information. If you put everything on the web, I've found that other people
just take it, and you don't even know who they are, and they often don't give
any of their information in return. My attitude is "I'll give you everything
I have if you give me everything you have".

I have, however, started a family wiki on a free publicly hosted service, but
so far most visitors have not bothered to make themselves known or
contributed anything, even though it is quite easy to contribute to a wiki.

I once used a program, I think it was Brother's Keeper, that could produce a
report showing the links between a single ancestor and a single descendant.

This was produced as a text file that could be imported into an e-mail or or
news message.

Legacy does a similar report, but it has graphics and fancy formatting, and
can only be exported as a graphics file.

Is there any way of producing a text report in Legacy, other than printing it
out and then retyping it all?

Are there any other programs that can produce such reports?

Or will I have to reinstall Brothers Keeper 5 and GEDCOM my data across?

One solution is to install the Generic-Text only printer driver and
select FILE: as the port.

After you "print" the report to this printer, you will be promted for
the file location/name. When done, you can edit the file, or copy and
paste the text to something else. Adjusting your report parameters will
reduce the amount of editing.

Why can't you save it to pdf and sent the pdf attachment? Of course, you'd
have to have the Deluxe edition to do that.

Someone on the newsgroup gave me the answer -- use the relationship
calculator (which doesn't appear in the reports menu, but under Tools, I
think). It has the option of text output, which can then be edited in a word
processor.

When discussing general software, such as word processors, spreadsheets,
databases etc., it is best to stick to the genealogical uses of those programs
-- but sharing ideas on how they can be used for genealogy is good.

I never heard of it -- but perhaps you could write soemthing about it and
tell us what you do with it!

PostgreSQL (http://www.postgresql.org) is a very advanced open source
RDBMS, in the same league as commercial alternatives like Oracle, DB/2
or MSSQL. It's BSD licensed, which means that you can do absolutely
whatever you want with it, no strings attached. And it's totally rock
solid.

I've written three articles about the migration from The Master
Genealogist to my own home-stitched application:

http://solumslekt.org/forays/tmg.php
http://solumslekt.org/forays/blue.php
http://solumslekt.org/forays/exodus.php

There's also an «executive overview» at this page:

http://solumslekt.org/note_en.php

In my blog http://solumslekt.org/blog/ I try to describe the development
in some detail.

Thanks very much -- it sounds very interesting, and your articles are very
good -- thanks for that.

When I've studied them in more detail I might come back to you with a few
questions.

I have long felt the need for such software, which I think would be useful for
historians, biographers, family historians, local historians and others.

I tried to develop such a database in MS Access, and hoped that people who
were more into softwere development would help me refine and test it, but i
couldn't find anyone else who was interested.

I've discussed it in the past in soc.genealogy.computing.

The database has three main tables -- Events, People and Places.

Events are entered so that they can be sorted chronologically, with a brief
description.

The Places database could show what events took place in a particular place.

The People database would show people involved in the event, and in what
capacity they were involved -- participant, witness, host, guest etc.

I still feel the need for such a program, and I'm sure many others would find
it useful too, but I'm not a software developer, so I can just describe the
kind of thing I want.

In the absence of that, however, I've found askSam to be a useful program for
research notes.

It wouldn't be hard to write a Visual Basic stand-alone program to do this. I'm
no expert with VB but I'll help to get the ball rolling.

What about a few of us trying to design something on this group?

I think that that would be an excellent idea!

If you look at

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gensoft/files/DevSoft/

you will find Access tables and a description of them for such a program,
which could be a starting point for discussion and development.
