As some of you know, I ran out of copies of the Ghantasala Documentary DVD produced by Sree Ratnakumar Ghantasala. I am glad to announce that I now finally have a lot of new copies.

As posted earlier, the cost of the DVD is $20, and with postage and the

Preliminary round at zonal level will be held on November 27 at four locations

HYDERABAD: The Department of Culture and State Cultural Council will conduct the `Ghantasala State-level songs' competition to mark the 83rd birth anniversary celebrations of renowned playback singer on December 4.

Speaking to mediapersons here on Wednesday, Arja Srikanth Director, Department of Culture, and Dharmavarapu Subramanyam, Chairman, State Cultural Council, said that the preliminary round of zonal-level competitions would be held on November 27 at four locations including the city at 10 a.m.

Venue details

The preliminary round would be held at Warangal Pothana Auditorium, in charge, Principal, Government College of Music and Dance (Ph.No. 2426228, 9440419968), Hyderabad Ghantasala Statue, Ravindra Bharathi, (Ph.No.27801788), Vijayawada Ghantasala Music and Dance College, (Ph.No.2432286) and Kurnool Sunayana Auditorium (Ph.No.221860).

The final competitions would be held on December 4 at Telugu Lalitha Kala Thoranam from 3 p.m. onwards for all the zonal-level finalists. All the zonal finalists would be provided with second-class train fare.

The participants would be grouped into juniors (20 years and below) and seniors (Above 20 years) and competitions would be held in solo (male), solo (female) and duet (male and female) and each category would have two prizes.

Cash prize

At the zonal-level, the first prize winner would get Rs. 1,116 cash prize and second prize winner, Rs. 508. At the State level, first prize winner would be awarded Rs. 5,000 and the second prize winner Rs. 3,000.

Hi friends:

There is a bit sung by GVR as pointed out by Mahendra garu as he said - Andala pasi paapa annayya ki kanu papa (NTR and Vanisree). Infact the Chitti Chellelu movie from which it is, ends with this bit.

Similary there is GVRs part of Nidura pora tammuda from Santanam. I am yet to see them on the audio CDs or cassettes.

I have been usually recording on to the cassettes directly to the taperecorder from the VCR or DVD player audio ouputs when I want to record these rare bits and pieces of GVR (a very few tape recorders have this facility and I happened to have one of those like the Sanyo).

VIJAYAWADA: Playback singer P. Suseela will be felicitated and presented the Ghantasala Venkateswara Rao award by Dilip Kumar Cultural Academy. The award will be presented as part of the Ghantasala Venkateswara Rao `aaradhanotsavam' at the Tummalapallivaari Kshetrayya Kalakshetram here on December 18.

Cultural academy president Dilip Kumar said Ms. Suseela will be felicitated on the occasion. A long time assistant of Ghantasala, J. V. Raghavulu, will also be felicitated, he said.

A Telugu cinema song contest will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the same day at the Press Club here. There are no restrictions on age or selection of songs for the contestants, he said.

It is one of my favourites too. I think that there was a discussion
in Racchabanda some months ago which suggested that the song was
based on a folk song. I do not remember whether the tune is also a
folk tune. I think that Sri Paruchuri Srinivas was one of the
participants in the discussion.Perhaps one can search the archives.

To the best of my knowledge and also from the information gathered from those who conducted research on G's songs, Ghantasala garu sang about 2400 songs in all. The number of songs in other languages may come to another 200-300.

The claim made by another earlier poster (RAMESH PANCHAKARLA) seems to be totally unconvincing.

Well, we had a discussion about this earlier too, if I am not wrong,
and a number between 2000 and 3000 seemed the "authentically figured
out" number at that time. I think Sree Sreenivas Paruchuri cited some
sources too then. And, I remember Dr. K.V. Rao telling a number between
these bounds too.

Thanks for linking those messages. It brings back many interesting discussions that we had in those days. I cannot believe that it is almost a decade since I wrote some of those messages. Anyway, there are many ways/methods people counted/counting the number of songs sung by G. Again, I do not disagree nor agree with any of the following methods.

1. There are many people who say that we should count every song twice, because, in those days, (may be it is true even these days) a singer sings the song twice, once for the record (LP, 78rpm gramophone, whatever it is called) and another time for the sound track of the movie. No one guarantee that a singer has really sung the twice except the singer themselves.

a. This is probably one of the reason, why in some movies, the record has one singer and the movie another singer for a song, (ANR in record and G in movie for cheliyA kanarAva)

b. This also one of the possible reasons for difference in words for the same song sung by the same singer (other one censor objecting to certain words, like in vIrAbhimanyu) or the same charaNam getting sung twice, or more AlApana etc). Any way you get the point.

2. At the same time there are also individuals who will say that 3 padyAlu have to be counted as one song or there are others who say that they should be in a different category altogether and there are people who will say that a one liner before a song (like in rAvE nA cheliya) should be counted as a separate song.

Having said that, with no access to records (such as gramophone or 78rpm) from previous era and just based on whatever I can write and record from AIR broadcasts during the year 1980 through 1985 (after that the first Rajiv Govt. really killed local languages and programs in radio under HKL bhagat, please, this is just my opinion) and the HMV audio cassettes that I have purchased in 1995 in HYD and recorded in Guntur, I was able to list nearly 1400 songs (I believe this became a source of information for the ghanTasAla.info songs database search engine as well). I have still more than half my cassettes and 1/3 of my notes go through. Having said that when I went to India this year, I saw a program on ETV and I was surprised to hear a song by G (actor kAntA rAvu) in a movie. I never heard that song!

In my humble opinion, please don’t flame me on that, it is immaterial as to how many songs he sang. What is more important is how we can preserve whatever he sang and whatever is available to us, because no matter anyone will say, as I once said in this forum, in telugu cine music to this day, there are three “yugAlu”,

ghanTasAla mundu yugam, ghanTasAla yugam and ghanTasAla taravAta yugam.

He has sung many a memorable songs and lets all cherish them. Let us pray and hope that HMV/saregama brings out all his songs. Today majority of the CD’s and audio cassettes are released with songs from the movie sound track not the original LP or Gramophone record.

I agree more !

Number doesn't matter and it's not required to establist Sri G's stature as a singer.

But:

The history has to be straight. Facts should not be twisted conveniently. If a person claims that he has 5000 songs, he should come out with a list of what those songs are.

I learn that an ardent fan of Sri G collected close to 2100 songs, carefully copied them to cassettes. These cassettes will be presented to Dr K V Rao on Jan 15th. He could not, however, get the remaining 300 songs.

To the best of my knowledge, Ghantasala Gana Charitha is an authentic work - of course, with few errors of ommission and commission. I don't know much to find out the errors in that work myself, but I have been told so by few others who had done some research on G's songs.
