Heay Danny, this is Darrell. I remember Jon Shammel. He and I hung
out a lot. He was in that band freaky stylee with some guys from
Queens. Your name sounds familiar but not sure. Maybe you remember
me or not. I was at the Halloween dance in 86', 87 as well. I
dressed as a chick. The 80's were the best..

Oh my goodness, Jen! To this DAY, the zeps at that place are the gold
standard. It's been a lifelong journey to find others that delicious!
No kidding, I think about them whenever I have one. I didn't think
anyone would remember those!

That bus driver who picked us up everyday was also very nice. The exit
onto the FDR that he used to bring us home has been closed off - I
think since 9/11 - and every now and then I think about those drives
home. I have worked with a few people who live in Stuy Town and it
always brings back the ICS memories. Lovely Miss Howlett with her
skirts sitting waaaay above her waist and that darn bell.

Hey Dan,
I believe that in your previous post you were referring to Cathy
Coppola and her sister Nancy. I'm Kathy Basa Withers. I think that
you knew me thru Christine Cueto. I was living on Staten Island in
the 80s but spent almost all my time on GI. Thru the 80s I dated Paul
Burgun and Mark Johnston. Spent most of my time with Wendy Miraflores
and that crew. I think we are about 2-4 years older than you. Paul
was my age and Mark was 2 years younger than me.
N E way cant wait to see some of those photos. Kathy

Hey Kathy Basa Withers!  Sorry for the confusion there...I should've put two and two together.  Of course I remember you...although yes, I think I'm a couple of years younger than you.  I'm Christine's age of course.

Will get that picture project going when I'm "off the road".  I'm traveling the next couple of weeks...but will try to get my wife on it.

Safe travels to Florida!
Best wishes to everyone out there!

Dan

Hey Darrell - I've seen you post a few times...and I'm havin' a hard time placing you.  I'm sure if I saw a picture of you - it would hit me like a ton of bricks.  I'll have to look more closely at the pictures...  Shammel and I hung out a lot back in the day too.  Lots of fond memories with his guitar playing and his photography developing studio he had in his basement.  He was a riot.  He was good friends with Eddie Gorkowski for a time, and we had a ton of fun wreaking havoc, exploring tunnels, climbin' up into the mega-tower in Bldg. 400 for the Brooklyn Bridge fireworks, climbin' that classic oak tree on the golf course, and running from "Superman" the SP.

We should've been jailed for half the stuff we did...

Oh my god you just had to throw that one out there. But wasn't he one

remember so many of us, young and old really messing with him. He was
a bit annoying to say the least. I forgot about that nickname until

Hi Kathy! - and hello Danny... (I don't think we knew each other - but have a mutual friend in Mark Johnston...)

funny story about Superman... my older brother Nat, the Meredeth brothers and Paul Burgun (amongst others) used to screw with those guys so bad. We used to rig fireworks all over the golf course with a burning cigarette on the fuse so it would act as a delayed fuse - and then go hide and watch him cruise all over the place in his Cushman car trying to catch us... one night one of those guys (probaby one of the Meredeth boys.. ha ha) hopped in his little security car when he came after us and took it for a joyride... it was so much fun playing cat and mouse with those guys (but him in particular). we used to call them the Keystone Cops...

Holy Cow I remember that night. It was Jon Jon, Nat, Steve Smith and
Paul on that crazy joy ride. I am also remembering that one of them
dropped their wallet (Steve Smith?) and that's how they tracked them
down. Of course they all talked their way out of it saying that he
must have lost his wallet on the golf course somehow. I always found
it quite amazing how they pretty much schmuzed their way out of all
kinds of craziness.

Danny,

Yeah, I hung out listening to Jon S. play in his basement as well. I
remmeber Eddie G. playing base guitar. I just reconnected with
Eddie. Jon, Chris Ferrer and I hung out with people from Queens and
Brooklyn. Many were in the band and we would go camping. Did you
know Luke Brown? I think Eddie mentioned something about hiding in a
tree from one of the security guards last time I talked with him. I
posted my pic. Later

Darrell.

The other twin was Dax. They lived near me in 555 and I babysat them
a couple times. Very funny little boys!!! Was anyone else on the bus
the day we had a paper and fish fight with the people at the Fulton
fish market? A couple guys, I think it was Craig Thorngren, my
brother, Chris, and Mike Blank started throwing paper out the window
at the fish guys that were loading the seafood in the market. Then
we got stuck in traffic right in front of them. The seafood workers
started throwing fish guts and squid in the windows of the bus. I
seem to remember a squid landing in the lap of the one girl
behaving. The world is an unfair place!!

I haven't thought about Kenny King in years. He and his partner in
crime, Ian McDonald. (funny, I named my son, Ian) He loved hockey
and was always checking the scores. He's probably playing fantasy
football as we speak!!

Many of you may wish to check out and register on this site, www.militarybrats.com.  It currently has over 79,000 registered brats, including 100+ who lived on GI.  When using the search feature, most are found under Governors Island, but there are a few listed under Fort Jay  and Ft. Jay.  I found Earl Burns, Jr. from our group and a few other names sounded familiar.  I contacted Earl and he has already responded.  I provided him with this website and the Ft. Jay one.  Hopefully, we will bring another brat home soon.

The photos were great shots. I wish my parents shot more photos. I always
wondered whose child you were holding.

I enjoyed your JC Penny posting.

Philip,

Sorry for the delay in answering your post. We had our computer crash
and thankfully it is up and running again.

Thanks for the wonderful picture. That is me right in the front with
the long blond hair holding someone's kid. David Reese is standing
next to me in the shorts. I believe that is Jerrileigh Simpson at the
far left and I recognize you and the far right.

Carolyn

The Coast Guard is often forgotten when we think of war time but as many of us know, they have served in every war and often proportionately greater than the other armed services.  Today, there are members of the Coast Guard serving in the middle east that deserve our thoughts and prayers as well as our support.

I found a great site where those who desire, can send care packages to them in time for the upcoming holidays.  This is but one small way to thank them for their unselfishness and their bravery.

There are lots of great ideas on the site for things to send and even places that you can order care packages to be sent in your name if you don't have time.  This quote really inspired me:  There is NO more effective ambassador for our country than a Coast Guardsman helping the local folks.   [see story below]

So I am sending lots of pink things (without peace signs on them of course) to let them know that I too am fighting over here to get them home soon. I'm sending hard cheese (very hard for them to get on a ship), pink lemonade, pink m&ms, holiday decorations and pink stationary.  I am also sending lots of recycled Beanie Babies to go in my care packages so they can give them to the children in Iraq.

Don't forget, deadline to get there by Christmas is Dec11th!

Cool Things To Send:

  • Beanie Babies!
No kidding! A really good excuse to get rid of those things (don't buy new ones, collect them from your house and ask your friends)!! Send some in every package to ALL units as they are really easy for the Coast Guardsmen to carry with them and give to the local kids who love them. These are better then small plastic toys which will break easily and are not as easy to carry in a pack. There is NO more effective ambassador for our country than a Coast Guardsman helping the local folks. This is done far more often then the press shows, and quite probably the most important thing a Coast Guardsman will ever do. This picture is from CWO3 Edward Jimenez's unit in Afghanistan. You folks sent the toys this Marine is handing to the child.

  • peace,

Those pictures are absolutely priceless. Any and everyone who grew up
on Governors Island should look at them (iuf you haven't already) and
will appreciate them. I'm very happy they gave yu that much access to
so many of the places most of us brats have not laid eyes on in
decades. I particularly enjoyed how you took pictures from angles
and perspectives that only a G.I. Brat would have looked for. For
instance, I like the shot you took from in front of the bowling
alley, looking back across the baseball fields towards buildings 855
and 844. Any of us who have made the walk across those fields
thousands of times will appreciate that photo. I also liked the
photos where you stood on the docks on the eastern side of the island
and looked back at the island. Great vantage point. The views out of
the windows in Building 866 were great as well. Too many great
photos to comment on themm all. Thanks for taking them and
memorializing in photo places that may no longer exist come next
Fall. To close, I will list some of the items in your photos that I
had not seen and/or thought about in years...

    -Parquet floors in Buildings 866, 855 and 844 (I lived in 855)

-Those old white heater/radiators in those apartments

-the ancient elevators used in those buildings.

-The dimness of the hallways in those buildings (since there were no
    windows in the ahllways)

-The laundry rooms in those buildings (mom spent a lot of time there).

-The mailboxes in the lobby of those buildings.

-The wide array of colors inside teh stairwells of P.S. 26.

    - The carpeted auditorium in P.S. 26 (where we held recess on rainy
    days).

-The kindergarten room in P.S. 26.

    - The gymnasium that also served as a cafeteria in P.S. 26.

    - The pool that has now becomea jungle.

    - The rear loading platform of the commissary, dry cleaners, etc.). I
used to jump my bike off that platform.

Thanks for the comments, Ron. The fence separating north and south island alone
    is enough
harbinger of what is to come for the rest of the island. Having the opportunity
    to walk that end
of the island with my old friend Linda was a real treat, and I could predict
    what many of you will
feel with the disappearance of those buildings by what I was feeling for the
    loss of the old brick
village, the old teen club, old scout house, old bowling alley and the foghorn
    alley apartments
that I remember, torn down twenty or so years ago. I never went to the new PS
    26, but knowing
many of you had, I put that on my access request list. Many of our friends from
    the Park Service
had never before been permitted access to those buildings either, and they were
    quite eager to
join the party. As Linda and I passed the security checkpoint heading south
    along Craig Rd. in
front of the docks, I was reminded of how much I love that row of London Plains
    trees (what we
thought were Sycamores) along the seawall, and starting to fear that they, too
    would not survive
the redevelopment. I will hope that those stately trees will be preserved. I
    should also share
that the Park Service folks will be undertaking an effort to preserve all of the
    road and building
monuments that adorn the island, and that they are hoping your former quarters
    will have some
    placeholder remaining into the future.

Let me know privately if your return email is one that you monitor, and I will
    send you some
    additional information.

I did see the photos, posted something of it earlier.
Ron, you discribed them as I did...priceless! !!
To see the inside of 866 again. I lived in 844. Thought I would
never see the inside of the building again. Your thoughts were mine
as you talked about all the picture angles. To see out of the living
room window again, to see the laundry room, the mailboxes, to look
from the mailboxes toward the front door of the bldg, to see the
elevators, the radiators, the hallways.... .sounds so trivial, but
    has
so much meaning. Did they still have the incinerators when you lived
there? I don't think I could live in a bldg with an incinerator
    now....scary! !!
For me, they are pictures I will cherish.

Thank you all for the information concerning the on-going operations on the
    Island. I
took a look at the pics on fortjay.com. While in my mind I know that things
    change, I was
saddened by the appearance of the bowling alley, library, pool, fields and
    school. My
    heart just dropped.

Having been through all those places many, many times, well, many here feel the
    same.

I can only hope that the future plans DO preserve parts of the Island for the
    people that
lived there - to let folks know that it wasn't just a base, but a place - as the
    sign down by
the ferry terminal - used to say: where 6000 people work, live and play.

Thanks to all for posting photos of their time on the Island. I will attempt to
    get some
    scanned in and posted.

I am wondering (it DOES happen once in a while) if there are plans or if the
    park service
has approached anyone about having a display that would show the people that
    lived on
the Island. Imagine seeing 877 and having a display that actually showed some
    of the
activities that happened around there. Or the pool, bowling alley - well, you
    get the idea.
Something tells me that it won't happen, but, oh my, wouldn't it be nice!

Anyway - again - thanks to all who have posted information and photos.
