I completely forgot about them filling the circle for ice skating. I remember
when they put the blacktop on it and I was skateboarding out there and fell and
dislocated my arm near the elbow. My mom made me take a bath and put on a
sundress before she took me to the dispensory for xrays! We were living in 844
at that time. And that merry go round, I think it was white and faded red and
how many of us climbed on top of it to be spun around and around??? That was
always fun.

have been the reason they took it away. I always loved the spinny
thing behind 855, and I remember a long time ago when they used to
fill up the ring behind 855 with water in the winter and then all
the kids would ice skate there. That was really cool. I was really
young then that was in the early 70's I was about 4 or 5. Still
using double blade ice skates. I also learned how to ride my bike
in that ring.

Yes the other rink was in fog horn alley. I live there from 75-91. I also has
quite a few injuries from the rink in the summer time. I still have the scars
to show for it. I guess thats why they filled them up with the black top.
Could you imagine the lawsuits that there would be today?

center for everyone to run through and I stepped on a piece of glass and had to
have stiches again. I lived there from '69 - '73.

Thank you for posting these pictures of the island. My family lived there for
over 20 years continuously. I lived in 866,877 and Brick Village. I remember
when I was in High School, I couldn't wait to leave. Now I wish I could go back.
Thanks for the memories!!!

My pleasure. I enjoy sharing those photos with folks on this site
because I know that you all will appreciate them in a similar manner
as I do. If you get the chance to go to the island for the Saturday
open-houses they run in the summer (or at least they did this past
summer) it's worth the trip. The island is eeriily deserted. It's
almost as if the inhabitants just disappeared in an instanct and left
behind relics of their existence. Walking around looking at those
weathered buildings, empty playing fields, and smelling that salt-
water as it batters teh seawall really does draw out memories. It;s a
bit eery in it's desserted state, but oddly enough, it's the most
appropriate way to swim around in the past. Memories lurking around
every corner.

The next reunion is August 2006!!! We were having them yearly, but
this years reunion did not have a good turn out like the others have
been. Mark your calendars now! By 2006, they may even open up the old
hotel and let us stay on the island. Take care and Happy Holidays to

Yeah...can't be too many families that fit that description. I was a
classmate of yor brother Travis. We were in Scouts together as well.
Oddly enough, we all moved away from the island the same week twenty
years ago. My lingering memory of your brother dates back to the
camping trip the scouts took to the Alpine forest of NEw JErsey. We
had packed up and where ready to head back to G.I. and Travis bolted
from the car (apparently mad about something) and dashed off into the
forest. We had to sit around for about an hour while the adults went
searching for him.

I remeber that day. That same day our mother went into labor with
our last sibling. We had a lot of fun at that scout camp. My brother
Jason scared me and some others with stories of the Buffalo Boy
before we even got out of the van. Our mother was a Den Mother for
the Scouts.

I remember those stories too. The one about the New Jersey Devil
really spooked me. That camp was definitely a lot of fun. I recall
that your mom was Den Mother. I also recall Ms. Scaggins (she was
somehow in the socut leadership and had two sons who were scouts). If
I recall correctly, it rained on us the first day or two, so we had
to hang our clothes up by the fire to dry. Aside from that, it was a
great experience.

It was funny about the scavanger hunt at the camp. My brother Jason
traded Ricky Skaggs numbers and Jason ended up with the bag that had
the medal in it. I think Jason may have scouted the area and knew
whom to approach. Boy was Ricky not pleased. I think he cried.

The Skaggs were some nice folks. They helped us move from G.I. to
Idaho. I mean, they actually travelled with us. It has been a long
time since I had heard anything from Mr. and Mrs. Skaggs or their
boys, Ricky and Jason. Last time I heard, they were in California.

LOL. I remember that. I also remember how we walked over to some
other troop's campsite and they did a skit that turned out to be a
gag on us (the "i caught a line full of suckers" skit). I remember
some folks in our Troop were not happy about the skit and there was a
lot of tension. I guess we couldn't take a joke.

The Skaggs were indeed nice.

Hi all,
I lived on Governor's Island from 1968 to 1972, attended JHS104 and
Brooklyn Tech. I live in Orlando and recently visited Dorcey Jenkins
in Ohio who I believe has attended a reunion or two.
Anyone out there that remember me?

I also lived on the island from 69-73 and attended PS 26 and JHS 104, but my
brother who is 2 years older than I attended JHS 104 and Brooklyn Tech - perhaps
you knew him (Dade Conger)

You may not remember me but you might remember my
step-brother, Brett. Last I heard he was in the Atlanta area. And
you're just to the north of me.

Yes, I remember Dade. Not sure if we went to Tech at the same time
but I remember him from the island. It might have been from flag
football which my dad coached for a few years. Or basketball, I hung
out at the gym and bowling alley a lot in those days. Nice to meet
you. deidra

Was he short with blonde hair? What year did he graduate High
School? I graduated in 74 and the Brett I remember was two years
behind me. Deidra
