"We are at the very beginning of time for the human race.It is not unreasonable that we grapple with problems. But there are tens of thousands of years in the future. Our responsibility is to do what we can, learn what we can, improve the solutions, and pass them on."

It's only a deal if it's where you want to go. Find your travel deal here.

WHAT’S UP?  Watson’s up.  This month’s freebie story features a wonderful photo of a vintage airplane.  It’s a shot by Fresh Inker Scott Watson.  Sometimes Geez sees a Watson shot and uses it for inspiration.  As with “Water Falls” and “Lighthouse, Keeper,” the ideas can start with the images.

KEEPING IN TOUCH: Sometimes we hear from members who have stopped receiving their free emails with stories.  Usually they’ve changed service providers and forgotten to send us their new email addresses.  Sometimes the problem is new filtering software they’ve neglected to tell that StephenGeez.com and info@... are high-priority let-throughs.  We’re working hard to earn your interest and trust, so if you’re not hearing from us, please let us know.

MEMBERSHIP DRIVE: That’s what they call those periods when extra effort is being made to add new members.  Our membership drive runs year-round, 24/7.  In other words, please spread the word, encourage your friends both online and off to sign up.  It’s a private list, free of charge, a friendly no-spam zone.

PRINTING GEEZ: Some of you report trouble printing Stephen Geez stories and essays when you want to pass along hard copies to friends and family, usually because the right side of the text is lopped off.  Try printing “landscape” (which turns the page sideways so it fits easily) or changing your “margins” settings.  Let us know if this isn’t working.  We want you to be able to share.  Please!

TAILWIND: This month’s selection is short FICTION, a break from the recent essays.  It’s a short story about two old pilots who just can’t keep their feet on the ground.  Enjoy it, share it, and talk about the website to anyone who’ll listen.  Oh, and enjoy your summer, too.

“You know, Willie?  I’m right pleased you’re still flying with me.”

“It’s my pleasure, Jack.”

“Hey, just how many times have we gone up together?”

“Well, I don’t rightly know.  I’d have to count ’em up.”

“Don’t really matter,” Jack said, stealing a glance over at Willie.  It never failed to amaze him how old his co-pilot was looking these days, especially for being the slightly younger man.  They liked to spar about that every now and then—you old buzzard I ain’t no buzzard but if I am you’re an older one at least a buzzard gets to spend most of his time in the air.

Willie snorted, then got all quiet for a second.  Finally, he admitted, “Well, what matters is . . .  we always made it back down safe.”  He had a catch in his voice, which hinted at just one of the many reasons there wasn’t another soul Jack would rather fly with.  Willie always remembered never to forget what it was that first pushed ’em both skyward so long ago.

“As many flights as you captained,” Jack said, “—well, I know there had to be a reason you’d still be willing sometimes to take second seat, that, uh, that you, um—”  Damn, there was a catch in his own voice now.  Enough of this nonsense.  He directed his attention to the aircraft.  “God, she’s as sexy as they get, ain’t she?”

Willie followed his gaze to the silver vixen tethered before them, the magnificent, mighty DC-3.  “Man, don’t you just know it?”

“Finest aircraft Douglas ever assembled, that any wanderlusting soul ever conceived.”  Jack caressed her with his eyes, nose to wingtips to ailerons.  Her silver skin shined, still smooth as that day she’d rolled off the line in Wichita, 360,000 rivets lovingly placed, every part machined to a work of art.  They had dressed this one up for Northwest, orange-tipped props, eagle-winged cockpit windows, dual fuselage lightning stripes like Thor himself might dance with this goddess but never quite claim her for his own.  And that nose, those engine cowlings—liquid cobalt, as if the pure blue juices dripped from her face after she’d drunk too many hearty drafts of cerulean sky.

Jack closed his eyes and whispered so no one but Willie could hear: “Let’s take her up.”

“Hmmm . . .” Willie responded, his way of saying well now let’s think about that maybe another day might be better.  “You know there’s a bad storm coming,” he whispered back, any words less than cocksure bravado best delivered on the QT.

“Well, I know that,” Jack said, “but I think we can get above it, at least for a while, maybe find some tailwind to ride.”

“Well then,” Willie said, confidence returning to his voice, “it would be my pleasure, sir.”

As soon as they lifted off, Jack felt it, that familiar vibration, a gentle rhythm that feeds the soul and glides in time to a true pilot’s heartbeat.  “They can keep their jet engines,” he growled, swear words, for sure.  “They work against you, or in spite of you.”  He never liked how jets devour the air, then cough it up, no respect wham bam thank you ma’am got what I come for I’ll be on my way now.  He continued, “I say give me a couple of fine-tuned Pratt Whitneys any time.  They got respect for the sky, feeling for the jetstream, savoring God’s air one slice at a time, then putting it back just the way they found it.

Willie chuckled and nodded the way he’d nodded a million times, that gleam in his eye saying I hear you and know exactly what you’re talking about been there myself a few times yessiree Jack.

“Hey, Willie?  Let’s see if we can still find that wind.”

The co-pilot tilted his head and bit his lip, his way of saying maybe not such a good idea let’s think this through don’t wanna go too far.  “I’m worried about that storm coming,” is what he said.  “Maybe we should think about heading for home.”

“I know I know,” Jack said quietly.  “I hear you, but how many more times we gonna get ourselves a chance like this?  This is our plane, partner.  She’s built to laugh at storms, if only for a little while.”

“Well, it’s—” Willie started to say, but his words caught again.

Jack stole another glance and saw the old man next to him with an instant of clarity, that sparse fringe of hair tasseling the back of his uniform hat, deep grooves worn into the contours of a face that had seen its share of storms, eyes glistening with unrealized passion for soaring above man’s limitations.  No fear, though.  Never afraid, always sure.

“It’s your command, Captain,” Willie said.  “Take us in.”

So Jack started climbing, higher, then higher yet, even as perspiration beaded under his visor, a rivulet or two snaking down the grooves of his own cheeks, his collar now soaked.  “You gotta feel it,” he said reverently, barely loud enough to be heard over the roar of engines slicing cerulean sky.  “Feel it in your hands, through your seat, running right into your body and through your very soul.”  He sighed, then closed his eyes.  “You covering the instruments?”

“I’m right here,” Willie answered.

“It’s to the left—yes, port side, and up a ways.  Feel her?  She’s pulling on the wing, making number one not have to work so hard.”  He eased the DC-3 portward, gently rising.  “She’s pulling us in,” he said, barely stemming the excitement he felt.

“I do feel her,” Willie said, also excited now.

And Jack found her.

He found the tailwind he’d chased every time he flew, his greatest moments in the sky realized when she’d take him for the ride.  He backed off the throttle and embraced her, letting the wind carry them, their props just barely ahead of earth’s every breath, just enough to keep the DC-3 aloft as two old men strapped in to surf the clouds.

But soon the turbulence slammed into them, their fickle tailwind cowed by forces greater than any man can face alone.  Jack felt the storm pass through him, no plane powerful enough to hold them aloft forever.

“We need to set her down soon,” Willie warned, sounding far away, but somehow right in Jack’s ear.

“I—I don’t feel so good,” Jack said, bathed in sweat now, the fever coming faster, turbulence pummeling him unmercifully.  “Willie?!” he called out, opening his eyes again, looking about frantically.  “Willie?! I—”

“I got us, Jack,” said his co-pilot.  “I’m bringing us down.  Just hold on; we’re almost there.”

He panted for breath.  “It’s—it’s a bad—bad one.”

“I got you,” Willie said again, and Jack believed him, so many times he’d said I got you Jack it’s okay don’t worry I’ll get you home we got people waitin’ for us.

Another wave came over him, pushing him down hard, rolling him under as he gasped again, his skin hot, then clammy and cold.

Willie handed Jack a thick cloth, waiting while he wiped his brow, his neck, his face.

Jack covered his eyes with the cloth, rubbing gently, drying them lest somebody see.  He breathed deeply, just a bit longer this time—or maybe not, hard to tell—and when he got his bearings straight he dropped the cloth, opened his eyes, and found himself on solid ground, Willie beside him, both gazing up at that magnificent, mighty DC-3, the finest aircraft Douglas ever assembled, that any wanderlusting soul ever conceived.

“Maybe next time?” Jack started, whispering again.  “Maybe next time we could come here before the treatments?”

Willie gently took the cloth and stowed it in a satchel.  “Well, this place doesn’t open that early, but I think we might can try to get you a later slot at the clinic when one comes available.”

“Yes.  That would be better.”  Jack took a deep breath, then reached down and felt the wheel-bars.  “I’m not—I’m still not feeling so good.”

“I’ll stay on point this time,” kidded his co-pilot, “but next one’s on you.”

Jack reached up and patted Willie’s hand as his lifelong friend wheeled him past a thousand exhibits, myriad visitors pausing to watch two old geezers in faded uniforms must be old-time pilots from back in the day hush now don’t point.  Willie pushed Jack down the long ramp, then out through the museum’s double doors and into the lot, veering toward the handicap-parked van.

Cerulean sky stretched into the distance, a backdrop framing historic Greenfield Village, poignant moments from the past suspended against what sometimes dared to seem like limitless tomorrows.  A gentle breeze stirred.  Roiling storms still lay ahead, but plunging straight into them, knowing the right person is at your side, that’s what helps most when the best you can do is close your eyes and ride them out.

Jack belted himself into the lightning-striped van, his face against the glass, eyes ever on the sky.

“You know, Willie?  I’m right pleased you’re still flying with me.”

Picture this!

Danté Roenik creates ad campaigns, reveling in the fine art of rendering his concepts on million-dollar canvases financed by powerful, big-budget clients. Now selling the pharmaceutical industry's latest designer drugs, Danté dares to paint horns on the competition, his palette colored by a cadre of biz tycoons, corporate spies, news-mongers, law-suiters, suited looters, and the slickest high-gloss TV-production crew in greater Chicago.

But those sharp lines dividing assumption from truth begin to blur when the darker motives shaping mass media come to light. Danté's painted into a corner, his future about to be erased, panacea turning to plague as patients die and unhealthy doses of murder prove too hard to swallow.

Too late to whitewash the stain of deceit, Danté must decide who deserves to appear in his picture, the true subject an unfinished self-portrait way past time to deliver.

It's not what you see, not what you get . . .

But all you could ever imagine.

Let Danté show you how . . .

THE AUTUMNAL RANT!

Many Blessings,

I was unaware that a "peace day" proposal had been put through the UN General Assembly until Liron Peled, of Raquy and the Cavemen sent me the link for this video, which is attached to the end of this email. My wonderful Israeli friend did me a great favor in bringing my attention to this. Those people who hate the United Nations need to lobby elsewhere, especially those folks who love to say that the UN is Un-American. Well, DUh!

Are all things Un-Christian and Un-American all bad. Me thinks not!

Peace Day has passed a UN vote and the 21st of September is now to be observed as Peace Day internationally. There will be people who do not like holidays, people like Senator John McCain who did not want Martin Luther King Day to be made a legal holiday in Arizona, that is until he needed the black vote. He was one of the last politicians to acknowledge that he was wrong in not voting to name a special holiday after one of the greatest African-American leaders who ever lived.

Martin Luther King suffered the torture that most black Americans have suffered in this country for hundreds of years. He did not have to go to another country to fight or to be imprisoned, as his fight and prison were right here. While I respect John McCain and am impressed with his service to this country, I would be a great deal more impressed with him if he would come out and pledge an end to state-sanctioned torture.

The idea that a man who has endured torture himself would approve of its use in any capacity boggles the mind, if I am to look at the senator as a man of good ethics. A pledge of peace instead of promising more war would impress me too. His pledge to honor Peace Day does not seem to be in the cards until it is politically expedient for him to do so. Do not hold your breath.

As for whiners like Rush Limbaugh and other wet blanket conservatives who knee-jerk attacks against anything with the words French or peace; "Just shut up, ok! Go have tea and strumpets with your mercenary kind." Your tactics, those of baiting the Liberal and honorable opposition as being Un-America, disloyal traitors, are shameful. The Fascist tone that you take in your attacks is about as American as Adolph Hitler and the German Nazi party, the one that the likes of people like Ann Coulter would find homey and most welcoming.

Before folks start about how unfair the attacks of fair-minded people like myself are, the Neo-cons, especially, need to remember that it was they and their kind that brought this very hateful rhetoric in to play and many people have suffered as a result of their dirty tricks, libel, slander and scape-goating. They try to ruin people that they do not like, especially those who disagree with them. How fascist is that?

As for you wonderful flies in the ointment, on my own Neo-pagan team, who wish to call me a hypocrite because I am fighting fire with fire, so to speak, words with words, well, what are you doing to make this world a better place? And, what would you have me do differently? Yes, I am an opinionated old bitch but even this old dog makes it a point to leave the foundation for something to be built after I knock down a few walls.

We need a change and this bullshit of; "Oh gee, oh my, we must let people learn their lessons because their karma is on them" is not going to fly any more. Part of the human role wether we procreate or not, is to be parent, especially as we hit middle age and kids, lets face it, there are some very naughty children out there, in need of some serious Saturn spankings and even old Saturn needs help now and again, ahem. The only way I get on my knees or bend over, is by choice. For those of you who think in pictures, I am so sorry but sorry or not, the statement is still true!

Some of us are not John Kerry or Al Gore. Some of us will engage the opposition, that is of course verbally and with diplomacy first, the old quid pro quo, give as good as we get, debate, with fighting words and revolution, if necessary. I am partial to velvet glove revolutions like the one that liberated The Czech Republic. This possibility of revolution in many countries is yet another example of why we need Peace Day. Of course the real haters in this world only support institutions like the United Nations when it serves them or saves their ass.

The Right Wing in this country did everything it could, back in the day, to attack charities like UNICEF, regardless of how many children their efforts harmed, because the United Nations did not serve the purpose of the right wing rabble. My friend Reverend Bonnie began Robin's Hood Community Center in Covington, KY, a pagan charity that was attacked by Evangelical Christians on a fairly regular basis. An infant in need of formula does not care which god one invokes to get it and with all due respect, any parent who would see their baby hunger and thirst because of their religion is as far away from god as one could be. That baby comes first. The code word that Vangies love to use is Satanic. Well, war is Satanic then.

The conservatives in the extreme, back in the day, when they hated the commies, used their favorite word "Red" to describe this honorable organization of the United Nations. When you hear praise of the UN from the Right Wing, especially in this country, get ready to do a body count. That is the truth!

When the ACLU is defending. Lets say the Ku Klux Klan (Doing God's work, aren't they?) or the UN is voting the way that these Neo-Con criminals love thereby giving the rich what they want in the form of a coalition invasion force that will use up lot's of profit-making resources and products, then, the latter organization, in this case the UN can do no wrong, unless they deviate from a war footing and, goddess forbid, they should speak of that honorable state of peace, instead of massacring innocent Muslims, as opposed to those who are, in fact, terrorists. The underpants gnome is not the only one concerned with profits.

The State Department, Central Intelligence Agency and corporate America will, just like they did with un-rehabilitated Nazi's, post-WWII, the pope being a rehabilitated Nazi, one day will hire today's terrorists, in order to fight those enemies and terrorists of tomorrow.

The early Arabist's in the Middle East, founders of the State Department, were actually Christian missionaries, Presbyterians in fact.

Garden variety, peace-loving Christians, those of integrity and good heart, can not possibly be happy with the way things have been going. This, among other reasons, may account for the rising number of Gospel Christians in the ranks of the Democratic Party. Democrats do need to exercise caution with regard to social issues that have no place in government, like choice and family values. Look what happened to the Republican Party when zealous fruitcakes like Robertson and venom spewing hypocrites like Fallwell, and "did not do so well, because he got caught being a homo, with a male hooker and crystal meth" Ted Haggerd.

You do just have to pity people, men like Jimmy Swaggert with his hooker and the porn magazines, but forgiveness is a very difficult process when dealing with idiots whose careless hypocritical and sanctimonious words get people beaten up and sometimes killed.

Some of the most evil people in the world are religious people, with the god of their understanding being a vengeful and wrathful one, which is another reason we need Peace Day.

My, how the mighty have fallen.

Isn't that rock musician Jesus H. Christ, the one that so many of them run after, like groupies following a Rod Stewart tour, called The Prince of Peace? So then, if they worship the POP, then what is wrong with a little peace, and a day honoring the importance of such a sacred spiritual, social and humanitarian state? A state of peace should be a worthy enterprise for those who claim The Prince of Peace, as their god and savior, no?

These pulpit vultures are too busy getting their congregations stirred up, in favor of killing Muslims, just because they are Muslim, too busy to honor Their Messiah with answering his wishes and prayers of a world free of war.

As for my irreverent metaphors; When Evangelical Christians begin to honor Their God and Savior, respecting his magnificent and magical example, instead of them acting like their own dreadful version of Their Anti-Christ, I will be nothing but respectful. Until then it is my understanding the "H", in Jesus H. Christ stands for heavenly, in case anyone was wondering.

This idea of special holidays, ones spiritual in nature, seem to be a theme these days. As many people are aware, I am pushing for an over the top Neo-pagan holiday, All Fae Dae, to be observed this year, on the 21st of September. I am not kidding about this, kids! It will come to pass and people will fall in love with this holiday. We will have an All Fae Dae and it will be wonderful! (If the 24th of September does not fall on a Sunday that year, then All Fae Dae is to be observed the Sunday prior to the 24th. Sunday, for the record, belongs to everyone, even the Christians.)

The idea behind All Fae Dae is to make other people feel good about themselves. The concept of, the magical way in which All Fae Dae is to be celebrated by folks, is geared toward making life a better place for them "a happy to be-in" because of the efforts of others, a time to count our blessings, show gratitude for all that we have in this life, by giving to others, giving them the things that money can not buy.

No corporation need be involved in All Fae Dae. No corporation need be involved in a peace effort either. Corporations are against the whole idea of such a tranquil (and profit-less for them) celebration as these (most especially when they can't make a buck on it.):

All Fae Dae, September 21st, Everywhere You Make It:
http://blog. myspace.com/ index.cfm? fuseaction= blog.view&friendID=2946703&blogID=429519399

If no corporations were involved in the government, it is unlikely that we would be at war right now. War in the modern age is the legacy and dwelling place of corporations. Far too many people profit off of blood money and armed conflict.

This war is not about freedom, patriotism or preserving the Bill of Rights. It is especially not about the Constitution or liberty, unless you count the government wanting to take away some of your liberty and freedoms, as they tinker with the US Constitution.

This war is not even about national security, as a global economy recognizes no other nations. It is not about Iraq either, or at least it shouldn't be because no one involved in 911 worked for Saddam Hussein, the poor -hung by his neck, dead bastard-!

Most of those passports, if we refuse to allow ourselves to believe that this was an inside job, were from Saudi Arabia and in the Saudi versions of the Arabic language, Bush is just another way of saying Bin Laden. The Bush and Bin Laden families are as thick as thieves, in business together, profiting off of war, giving us all yet another reason why we need Peace Day.

If this war is about anything, it is about producing fear and allowing the rich to get richer, as the poor get poorer. Blame it on the Queers, the pagans and the feminists. The right wing misses the Communists because they have had no enemy to use as an attention getter for the citizens of this country, so the voters won't pay attention to what these scoundrels and criminals are doing to you and with the government we all, to our own peril, trust. Women-hating and Queer-baiting does not pack them in like Commie and Muslim hating. Since the Commies are gone, we only have one choice after queer, feminist and pagan types.

This war, at its core, is about Dick Cheney and his desire to strengthen the presidency, regardless of how many dead Americans it takes to do it. The executive branch nearly has all that it needs to become autocratic in nature. In another words, Dick and Dubya have a dream and in that dream the average American has no say unless they support the presidency, right or wrong, as a dictatorship.

Didn't the last two elections, the shenanigans in Florida and Ohio send off, even a little alarm bell, in each and everyone of us? They were stolen elections!

Now, does anyone wonder why I want a holiday to call my own? We actually have two in the making that are wonderful in concept. More than you might think, we all need an All Fae Dae and we need Peace Day too. We do not need the government to do this. We do not need the government to dictate who we can marry. Do you really want the people in charge of foreign policy and the economy to be in charge of your love life too? The government is supposed to be there to serve the people and not the other way around. War in the modern age does not serve the common man. We need Peace Day and we need peace, now!

By the standard of All Fae Dae, Peace Day is the perfect compliment to it therefore it makes me very happy that on the maiden voyage of All Fae Dae, it holds hands with the Autumnal Equinox and Peace Day.

We do not need the government to make either one of these sacred holidays work. Lets do it kids. Lets make history together.

Namaste,
The Faery King

Peace One Day - A Short Video Explaining Peace One Day.

Jeremy Gilley is an actor turned film maker, who in the late 1990's became preoccupied with questions about the fundamental nature of humanity and the issue of peace. He decided to explore these through the medium of film, and specifically, to create a documentary following his campaign to establish a day of cease-fire and non-violence.

In 1999, Jeremy founded Peace One Day, a non-profit organization, and in 2001 Peace One Day's efforts were rewarded when the United Nations unanimously adopted the first-ever day of global cease-fire and non-violence on 21 September annually - Peace Day.

In 2007 according to the UN, over 100 million people were active on Peace Day, in 192 countries. There were life-saving initiatives in 14 countries, and over 80 activities in Afghanistan alone where 1.4 million children were vaccinated against polio.

WHAT WILL YOU DO TO MAKE PEACE
ON 21 SEPTEMBER?

"Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes... the ones who see things differently -- they're not fond of rules... You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things... they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do."
