I would like to compliment Lino B. Dourado
(Utord'dekar-Kuwait) for writing very good poems in
Konkani. Keep writing more such poems please. If he
continues writing such high quality poems and complete
atleast 100 - maybe we could compile them and
recommend them for Sahitya Akademi Award. I have so
far read two, I look forward to reading another 98 or
more. If you run short of topics, ask me.

  Best Wishes
  Dr. Leo Rebello

Property boom in Bangalore
By SOMAN BABY

Scores of IT companies from the US have opened their
offices in Bangalore, resulting in a property boom in
the southern Indian city, it was revealed in Bahrain
yesterday.

Property prices in Bangalore have now reached
realistic levels, said real estate consultant Alex
Daniel.

"The property market in Bangalore and other cities in
India was hit by an artificial inflation over the past
five years," he told the GDN.

"The situation has changed and it is a healthy market
now, thanks to the positive influence of US companies
which have opened their regional offices at India's
hi-tech IT city.

"More US companies are making multi- million dollar
investments in Bangalore."

Mr Daniel, who is managing director of the
Bangalore-based Art Metal, predicted that property
prices in Bangalore would double in the coming 18
months.

He has already executed and marketed two buildings and
residential plots among Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) in
the Gulf.

Mr Daniel is in Bahrain to introduce his new project,
the Silver Springs, located four kilometres from the
Bangalore airport. "Out of 27 plots, 19 have been sold
for NRIs in other Gulf countries," he said.

Mr Daniel will make presentations on the project at
the Indo-Gulf Financial Services Securities Trading
Company's real estate division throughout today and
tomorrow.

BRUNO COUTINHO ARJUNA AWARDEE FETED BY VASCO SPORTS
CLUB.
- Report by: Daniel F. de Souza

Pictures courtesy: Vasco Sports Club

Arlem sponsored Vasco Sports Club, felicitated their
team member and Goa's ace footballer and Arjuna
Awardee Shri Bruno Coutinho at the hands of Shri
Manohar Parrikar, The Chief Minister of Goa at an
impressive felicitation function held this evening at
the Port City of Vasco. All the speakers showered
praises on Bruno for his excellent achievement.
Speaking as the Guest of Honour, the Hon'ble Sports
Minister, Shri Micky Pacheco congratulated the Arjuna
Awardee and paid rich tributes to him. Recalling the
words of the former National football coach Akramov,
he said Bruno is made of World Cup Standard. He said
that present Govt., has taken the development of
sports in the State of Goa very seriously which was
not done by the earlier successive Governments in the
State. He said the Govt., will be laying full stress
for the development of sports at the School level and
all assistance will be rendered. He also sought the
cooperation from the parents for the task ahead.

The Chief Minister in his address said that Bruno
receiving the Arjuna Award is a matter of immense
Pride for all in the State where football has a wide
following. 'It is a pride for my Govt., because it was
given at a time when the Govt. ruling at the Centre
and in the State of Goa is the same. Incidentally he
said, the first ever Arjuna Award to a Goan Sportsman
was also won during the BJP Govt., at the Centre. He
said the Govt will do everything for the development
of Sports, and will come out with a Sports Policy in
three months time. The Sports Minister he said is
fully committed to the development of sports. He
stated that the Govt., has decided to reward the
Arjuna Awardee with Rs. 5 lakhs, or offer a suitable
plot or help him to buy a residential place, as per
his preference.

Vasco's MLA Shri Rajendra Arlekar who presided over
the function also spoke. Mr. Noel da Lima Leitao, who
compered the function and also spoke briefly said,
that the very fact that Bruno has been honoured with
the Arjuna Award for a Team sports like football
indicates that he has done something exceptionally
good to deserve this. He has displayed excellent
individual prowess in football. He said Bruno brought
terror to the goalkeepers facing him at the
international level whenever he represented his
country. Making a passionate and intense appeal to the
Chief Minister, he said "Mr. Chief Minister, I request
you not to get bogged down by the Cash reward of Rs. 5
Lakh. A sportsman's career is short and I appeal to
you to enhance the amount to Rs. 25 lakhs for the
Arjuna Awardee, including the State's first Arjuna
Awardee Mr. Brahmanand Sankhwalkar, so that it would
help them in later years." This he said would inspire
other sportsmen to bring more Arjuna Awards to the
State. This appeal incidentally made the CM take note
of it, and he was seen jotting a note instantly. Mr.
Lima Leitao, also appealed to the CM to name the two
stands at the Fatorda Stadium after the two Arjuna
Awardees. He also thanked the CM for the financial
support the Govt., gave the club during the last year,
which he said is being utilised to train youngsters to
become future stars in sports. ' A Book 'The ABCD
Guide To Football' - A history of Vasco Sports Club
1951-2001 was released at the hands of the Chief
Guest. The book priced Rs. 100/- is available at the
Club House."

Earlier Shri Vinod Parkhot, the President of Vasco
Sports Club welcomed the dignitaries. Representatives
of several Sports Clubs, Individuals, Social
Organisations and Educational Institutions garlanded
the Arjuna Awardee. Bruno was presented a Memento at
the hands of the Chief Minister. Bruno in his brief
speech thanked all sports lovers, Coaches and the
Govt., for the honour and said that his hard work and
dedication had brought him this Award. The function
was well attended by sports lovers, citizens,
students, and others. Shri V.M. Prabhudesai, Executive
Director, Sports Authority of Goa, Dr. Susan De Souza,
Director of Youth Affairs were also present. Mario
Leitao, Secretary Vasco Sports Club, proposed the Vote
of Thanks.

Subject: $194 million Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral opens
goaworldtoday
Send Email Send Email

New L.A. Cathedral Opens Its Doors
Mon Sep 2, 4:29 PM ET
By SANDRA MARQUEZ, Associated Press Writer

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The newest U.S. cathedral opened
Monday amid prayers and controversy as protesters
condemned the $195 million cost and Roman Catholics
continued to struggle with a national sex abuse
scandal.

Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral was dedicated during
a three-hour service that incorporated the many ethnic
backgrounds of the community's faithful, from
Vietnamese singing to African drumming to children in
traditional Mexican dress.

Cardinal Roger Mahony led a procession of some 3,000
people, including more than 560 priests, bishops and
other clergy, through the sweltering 90-degree heat of
the courtyard, past the 25-ton bronze doors and into
the cool stone interior.

"My friends, welcome to the city's and your new
cathedral," a beaming Mahony said as guests settled
into the new cherrywood pews. "It is truly
exhilarating to see it filled with people ... this is
what it is all about."

Pope John Paul II sent a message that was read during
the ceremony, saying the cathedral represents the
diversity of Los Angeles.

"May this cathedral always remain an eloquent symbol
of communion and fraternity, of mutual respect and
understanding," said the Pope's messenger, Cardinal
James Francis Stafford.

Spanish architect Jose Rafael Moneo, whose style is
noted for combining classic architectural themes with
modern designs, built the towering, 11-story cathedral
with asymmetrical design and lack of right angles.

While its sandstone-colored walls evoke visions of
California's 18th century Spanish missions, some
critics have compared the cathedral's austere,
modernistic look to a prison.

Mahony and supporters see the cathedral a symbolic new
beginning for the nation's largest archdiocese, one of
many that has suffered from the scandal of sexual
abuse allegations against priests.

The stock market decline also has taken a deep bite
out of the archdiocese's budget, forcing cuts for
ministry and education by as much as 30 percent and a
scaling back of the opening celebrations.

During Monday's ceremony, dozens of people gathered
outside the cathedral to protest the church's handling
of the abuse scandal and the cost of the building.

A large papier-mache effigy of Mahony held a sign
saying: "Suffer the little children."

Signs urged "No fat cat cathedral."

Demonstrator Alice Callahan said the money for the
cathedral should have been used to help the poor and
homeless.

"I think the church would begin to look very redeemed
if it would take all the artwork it just bought, that
alone was $30 million, and sell it," she said.

Tod Tamberg, spokesman for the archdiocese, said the
cathedral was mainly funded through private donations
and "not one dime" was taken from church social
service programs.

Money raised from a 6,000-space mausoleum, built
beneath the cathedral, along with a gift shop,
restaurant, conference center and a 600-car parking
garage are expected to help cover ongoing expenses.

Built on a hill overlooking the traffic-choked
Hollywood Freeway, the cathedral also stands as a
reflection of Mahony's commitment to the city's
downtown. Along with drawing from California's 9
million Roman Catholics, it is expected to draw
tourists from Europe, South America and Asia and
become a focal point for downtown redevelopment.

India seize chances
to shock Australia
Kuldeep Singh

India 3 - Australia 2
Holland 3 - Pakistan 1

Over the years Indian hockey teams have been known for
making all the play and failing to score. But on
Tuesday, in the men's Champions Trophy in Cologne,
Germany, the team rewrote the script against
Australia. This time, it was the Aussies who made all
the play, with the Indians capitalising on the chances
that came their way to emerge 3-2 winners and register
their first victory in the elite six-team competition.

The victory kept India in with a chance of making
Sunday's final. They have four points following a draw
against Holland, a defeat against Germany and today's
victory.

For the Aussies, it was their third straight defeat
from as many matches, having also lost to South Korea
and Holland.

India, who were unlucky not to win their first two
matches, were under tremendous pressure from the start
as the Australians forced two quick penalty-corner
within the first ten minutes but without success. Till
then, the Indians failed to penetrate into the Aussie
circle. But a quick counter offensive resulted in a
penalty-stroke for India in the 11th minute. Young
Jugraj Singh took the stroke and made no mistake to
put India 1-0 ahead.

The Aussies continued to assert themselves but again a
counter offensive saw India's speedy forward Prabhjot
Singh score in the 17th minute to make it 2-0.

Two minutes later, Scott Webster pulled one back for
the Aussies from a field goal.

For the remainder of the first half, the Indians
frustrated the Aussies with good use of the long ball
and strong defending.

In the second session, Australia swarmed the Indian
goal and forced a series of penalty-corners but a
stouthearted display by captain Dilip Tirkey in
defence and goalkeeper Devesh Chauhan denied them
success.

And again, much against the run of play in the 48th
minute, India went 3-1 up off their first
penalty-corner. Deepak Thakur, who took the push,
waited for the return pass to slam home.

Not to be humiliated, the Aussies went all out and
stormed the Indian goal. They were rewarded in the
63rd minute when Dean Butler beat keeper Chauhan with
a good deflection. But Chauhan proved a hard nut to
crack thereafter, as the Aussies forced three
penalty-corners -- they got 15 in all -- in the dying
minutes, to see India post a memorable victory.

Indian team manager Aslam Sher Khan was pleased that
India managed to take the lead and hold on to it for
the first time in the tournament.

Subject: REFLECTIONS: 'Who put my brain in the washer?' - Melvin Durai
goaworldtoday
Send Email Send Email

REFLECTIONS

‘Who put my brain in the washer?’

On my website, I'm described as a writer who was born
in India, raised in Zambia and brainwashed in America.
A few readers may suspect that the "brainwashed" part
is more than just a joke, but only my psychiatrist
knows how much my brain has been altered. Sometimes I
wake up at night, screaming, "Axis of evil. Beware of
the axis of evil. Iran, Iraq, and Enron."
A decade ago, if you had asked me to name the smartest
man in the world, I would have said, "I'm not sure,
but I think it's Arnold Schwarzenegger. He convinced
millions that he could act."

Ask me the same question today and I will say, "Isn't
it obvious? It is G W Bush. The 'G' stands for genius
and the 'W' stands for wisdom. Hail to the leader of
the free world! May we all be as wise as he!"

Yes, as you can see, I'm showing the effects of 18
months of Republican brainwashing. But I haven't
completely recovered from eight years of Democratic
brainwashing. I still can't use the Internet without
thinking, "Thank you, Al Gore! May your children and
grandchildren be blessed with many websites."

If I've learned anything from living in three
countries, it's that brainwashing occurs everywhere.
Sometimes it's mild, such as when an American football
announcer says, "The whole world is watching today's
Super Bowl," forgetting to mention that most of the
world would rather watch a soup bowl.

Other times, it's rather blatant, such as when the
bombing of Afghanistan is called "The War on
Terrorism," though most civilians killed weren't
capable of terrorising even their mothers-in-law.
Hijack a plane? Most of them would have trouble
hijacking a bicycle.

Afghan farmer: "Hey Ahmed, let's take over that
bicycle. I will scare the owner with this sharp
object."

Ahmed: "OK, Majid, but be careful! You might hurt him
with that banana! Perhaps you should try a less
dangerous fruit."
When the US soccer team defeated Mexico in the recent
World Cup, the ESPN announcer yelled, "The land of the
free, home of the brave is into the round of eight!" I
can only guess what the Mexican announcer shouted:
"The gringos have trounced the land of the enslaved,
home of the cowardly."

We're led to believe that America is the greatest
country in the world, though some countries boast
lower crime rates, others provide medical care for all
their citizens, and a few have no country music
whatsoever.

We're also led to believe that America is the most
generous country in the world, though foreign aid
amounts to only 0.1 percent of GDP, dead last among
developed nations. That's like a woman who earns
$100,000 donating a cheap pizza every month to the
Catholic soup kitchen and expecting a big hug from the
Pope.

Even in terms of raw dollars, America has trailed
Japan during the last decade, giving about $10 billion
per year in foreign aid, a large portion allocated to
the poor nation of Israel.

Don't get me wrong. I love America, mostly for all the
freedom we enjoy. But don't think for a moment that
we're immune to brainwashing. And if you don't believe
me, just ask G W Bush, the smartest man in the world.

Can I change sponsor?

MY current contract gets over in October 2002.
I want to change my sponsor.
In my contract notice the period is of 45 days.
My current sponsor is not a person of good character and if he knows

Please suggest me a proper way to avoid this situation and get a new
sponsor/job as soon as possible.
Please publish it in the GDN so everyone else can get help in this
matter.

Mario's doodles on Goa take new avtaar
SANJAY BANERJEE

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

It is a refreshing peep into Goa that was, the home to
cartoonist Mario Miranda, who conceived and documented
the first impressions of his ``Gaon'' in 1963 with his
book of cartoons `Goa With Love' published by his
employers then, The Times of India.

So many years later, in the fourth updated edition of
his 1963 labour of love, it is with a heavy heart that
Mario acknowledges the changing skyline of the place
of his birth. The updated edition comes with
illustrations and text.

He harks back to the past with nostaliga — the Goa
that was — doodling matronly mothers proudly watching
their pretty `senoritas' dance with their beaus on the
famous Calangute beach on a moonlit summer night in
May. Many summers laters, with his inimitable dash,
Mario caricatures a happy family — big smiles and loud
T-shirts screaming `I love Goa,' — home on holiday
from Dubai and Harvard. The year is 2000.

Then his sketch pen has a dash at the disco nite at
Bingo Bongo on a weekend, and offshore gambling in the
floating casino on the Mandovi. Juxtaposing the new
with the old, Mario brings alive sentiments of yore as
recalled by a barber with ``leftist leanings.''

There is the well-fed landlord, part of Goan
aristrocracy, and the burly priest regaling village
folks with his oratorical skills, his sermons adorned
with choice Latin quotations and anecdotes.

Humour and satire are a part and parcel of
cartoonists, as it is with Mario's characters Ms
Fonseca, secretary to the boss, clerk Godbole angling
for her or Rajani Nimbupaani and Balraj Balram
lampooning Bollywood.

The cartoons on the Goan way of life lights up this
edition, like the kitchen taken over by the lady of
the house from `mesta' (chief chef) on special days.
And Mario captures the essence of the coastal land
with bombastic names for his characters, like Dona
Clementina do Bom Parto Rodrigues, typically an exotic
name of the region, not to forget the little children
with amused look on their faces and the naughty yet
well-meaning dogs.

``I used to keep a diary as a child, doodling in it,''
recollects Mario who went on to J J School of Arts in
Mumbai, but dropped out from there in a day.

Rajya Sabha MP Pritish Nandy who released the book
here was effusive in his praise for Mario. He said
Mario was the only cartoonist who has six memorable
enduring characters. ``It was always a pleasure to
work with editors C R Mandy (an Irishman) of `The
Illustrated Weekly' down to Pritish Nandy,'' said
Mario.

With his sketches of Prime Minister Vajpayee, deputy
Prime Minister Advani and the cartoonists' delight,
former Bihar chief minister Laloo Prasad Yadav, Mario
keeps pace with changing times. "I enjoy working in
black and white," he says with an air of finality.

PM's poem in the Indian Express of 22 March, 1999 and
my poetic reply of the same day are reproduced below
for your perusal. English translations appear below.

This is what PM AB VAJPAYEE wrote :

Din Jatey Der Nahin Lagti,
Dekhte, Dekhte Ek Varsh Beet Gaya;
Lambi Pratiksha Ka Varsh,
Kathin Pariksha Ka Varsh;
Aapka Vishwas, Hamare Prayas;
Kalima Ghatne Lagi Hai,
Nirash Maan Mein Nayi Asha Jagi Hai;
Sabhi Sapne Sakar Karna Hai,
Milkar Raasta Paar Karna Hai;
Aeeye,
Sankalp Ko Doharaeeyen,
Nayi Saadee Ko Bharat Ki Saadee Banayen!

(How time flies! A year has gone by in a blink.
A year of long wait, a year of difficult trials.
Your trust and our efforts have together
dispelled the darkness. A new hope has awakened
depressed hearts. We have to realise our dreams.
We have to traverse the path together.
Let us reiterate our resolve - Next Century
will be India's Century)

This is what I wrote to him on the same day

Pradhanmantriji,
Kavita aap achchi likhate hai,
Bhashan bhi aap achcha detey hai,
Kaam bhi kuch-kuch achcha karte hai.
Lekin,
Keval achchi kavitayen likhanese,
Masjid todkar mandir bananese,
DTC ki bus mein Pakistan janese,
Kya unnati hogi jhunjhuna bajanese?

Pradhanmantriji,
Kavita aap achchi likhate hai,
Sankalp bhi aap achche rakhate hai,
Prayas bhi kuch-kuch thik karte hai.
Lekin,
Aagar agle char saal chala aapka raj,
Kya garibonko milega kapda, makan, anaj?
Kya jatiyavad, prantiyavad, aatankvad khatma hoga?
Kya mehengayi, ghooskhoripar ankush lagega?

Pradhanmantriji,
Kavita hum bhi achchi likhate hai,
Achcha kaam achchi dharna se karte hai,
Navjivan, navbharat, navjagat ka sapna hum bhi dekhate
hai.
Lekin,
Jabh hamare uppar hamala hota hai katilana
Aapko waqt nahin milta hamen dekhane aana;
Toa hamare maanko kaise hoga vishwas,
Ke aap hamare saath milkar karenge deshka vikas?

English translation
Mr. Prime Minister,
You write good poetry,
You also deliver good speeches,
Your work too is not bad.
But, by writing poetry,
by demolishing mosque and building a temple,
by travelling in a DTC bus to Pakistan
and by playing a rattle, can we achieve progress?

Mr. Prime Minister,
You write poetry well
Your vision too is good
Your attempts too are not bad.
But, if your Govt. lasts for another four years
Will poor get Food, Clothing and Shelter?
Will casteeism, regionalism, terrorism end?
Will price rise and corruption be reined?

Mr. Prime Minister,
We too write poetry well,
We too do good work with dedication,
We too dream of a new life, a new India and a new
world.
But, when some one makes a dastardly attack on our
lives,
and you do not have time to visit us,
then how do we trust that you would work hand in hand
with us in nation building?

Subject: Holy Family Choir celebrates Annual Parents Day in Kuwait
goaworldtoday
Send Email Send Email

The Holy Family Choir of Kuwait celebrated their
annual Parent’s Day 2002 with a musical bonanza titled
'Laurel & Hardy' on the 5th of September and was held
at the Church hall at the ground floor, got underway
at 7:20 p.m. Well, it was truly an eye catching and a
stomach hurting experience, because of the humour and
glamour that was sprinkled within the show from the
word, GO!.

This function will undoubtedly be etched in everyone’s
memory as it catered to the young and the old alike
and did not bore a single soul in the audience - the
parents, children and the invitees.

The show took-off with some fancy technology and a
beautiful visual graphics display of the titles, as
all the characters and the people behind the scene
were brought to the fore.

All said and done, the show got under way, in true
pomp and spirit that entertained the crowd
whole-heartedly, and it showed the creative knack of
the director duo, Mario Fernandes & Augusto Morais,
who have written and directed the play. Conchita
Cardoz, Jonathan Fernandes, Bab Agnelo, Gracy Morais,
Lawry Fernandes, Esperansa, Elliseus, Sunny, Jane,
Bernand, Laurie M., Neves, Luis, Micheal D'Silva,
Esperansa & Troupe, Peter Franco, and Cindy Fernandes
gave their best performance. Musical score was
provided Francis Almeida (Shahu) and Francis Machado
(on the violin).

The choir showed itself, not only to be a bunch of
good actors with lovely vocals bent on singing hymns
at mass, but they showed that they’re a versatile
bunch as well, with many of them singing well-known
foot-tapping tunes both in English as well as in
Konkani and Hindi and showing off their dancing
abilities galore.

A colourful leaflet printed was released on the
occasion.

The Holy Family Choir (Kuwait) was founded in 1980.
An elected committee, headed by Mario Fernandes (who
is also the Choir In-charge) and ably supported by
Neves Mascarenhas (Choir Master), Jorge Gomes (Deputy
Choir Master), Laurence Miranda (Administrator),
Joseph Rebello (Advisor), Margaret D'Cruz (Treasurer),
Santurnino Pereira (Auditor) was established on 13th
December 2001. The committee is well supported by
Fr. Domnic Santamaria, its Spiritual Director and His
Lordship, Bishop Francis Micallef.

I guess, you lovely people out there who missed the
show might have gotten a glimpse of what you’ll
missed, so everything, said and done, we shall be
waiting for all of you next year, God willing, to come
and share this lovely, yet splendidly humorous
occasion with us, ‘The Parents Day’.

A word of thanks went to His Lordship, Bishop Francis
Micallef and the Clergy, Fr. Domnic Santamaria, Deacon
Sylvester, Nada Saudi Food Stuff Est., John S.
Fernandes, Urban D'Cruz, Saturnino Pereira, Tony
Fernandes, Tony Gonsalves, Luis Carneiro, Gaspar
Almeida (goa-world.net), Arab Times, Kuwait Times, The
Times, Joe Silveira, Maria Janette Franco (our Compere
for this evening), Mr. & Mrs. Eugene, Augrace
Printers, James Franco, All advertisers, Iain L.
MacKenzie & Family, Simon Dias (Photography & Video),
Jose Rod, Flavio Andrade & Family, and United Friends
Club-Kuwait, sponsors for the Easter Hamper 2002 and
specially to Jane, Sunny, Micheal, Bab Agnelo, Bernard
and all supporters.

As His Lordship rightly pointed out to the audience
with all his wisdom, “that I need to laugh hardly to
get a good night’s sleep.” And so we all ought to heed
to his advice and join the Holy Family Choir!
Cheers!

Student drowned in hotel pool dies

MUSCAT — The much-desired miracle never occurred, as even prayers did
not seem to help save the life of Cardon Rodrigues, a 17-year-old
former student of Indian School Wadi Kabir (ISW), who died yesterday
owing to complications arising from his near-drowning state in the
pool of a local hotel, sources said.

All attempts to revive Cardon, who was on `life-support system' at
the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Royal Hospital, failed and he
died at 3.45pm yesterday.

The tragic news sent shock waves among the close-knit family members
of Cardon for whom this is indeed an irreparable loss.

Family friends, relatives and others who were fervently praying for
some miracle recovery for Cardon were devastated when they heard of
his tragic demise.

A family friend reported that the Rodrigues' household was shrouded
in misery and its members crazed with pain of this loss.

"It is unbelievably tragic, I don't want to relive this painful
experience," a family friend of Cardon commented, noting how everyone
was distressed beyond comprehension because of this tragedy.

Cardon's body is still kept at the Royal Hospital as the family
members have not yet decided on cremating him here or take him back
to India.

Cardon, who was put in the ICU after nearly drowning in the pool of a
local city hotel, last Wednesday morning, was earlier
declared `clinically dead' by doctors treating him.

Parrikar From Parra

Sometimes I am baffled to read on Herald, Manohar Parrikar as being
referred to or identified as a Mapsekar.

To put matters in proper perspectives, our Chief Minister, Manohar
Parrikar is a native of Parra, a village in Bardez, 3 kms from
Mapusa , where he has his ancestral home and which he invariably
visits on all important religious festivities.

I vividly remember it is only his father's generation that came and
stayed in Khorlim-Mapusa and hence he is a settler.

The village of Parra was once very famous for growing sweet and juicy
watermelons just as my village once produced the famous Moira
bananas, which have been hijacked by bananas from Kerala and coastal
Maharashtra and sold as moira bananas.

As a student, I recall having read or recited a nursery rhyme:
"Bananas de Moira e patecas de Parra sao doces e bom para comer,"
meaning Moira plaintains and Parra watermelons are sweet and juicy
and good to eat.

Hence, Manohar Parrikar should be proud of his original village and
of the succulent fruit and resist anyone calling him `Mapusekar'. He
is a real Parrikar.

A S Prabhu,
Moira, Bardez
