STAND- the hottest group for social justice in Darfur

 Upcoming events:

• First off, thank you to everyone that came to the candlelight vigil!
• Saturday Sept 24^th Global Village cancelled due to World Bank protests HOWEVER there will be a lot of activist groups out there for their causes so if you're going where a STAND or a Darfur shirt to spread the message!
• Oct 2^nd Friends community block party 1-4 eye street mall by the metro, we will table.   Anyone to volunteer email Alia alia@... or Adaeze ada_o@...
• Oct 2^nd at Columbia University in NY Iabolish is having a conference on activism particularly focusing on Divestment.   If your interested the website is where you can get more information and register www.sudanactivism.com/columbia and email sara.weisman@... to let me know your going
• Oct 6^th Darfur Fast and Concert begins at 5:30 Marvin Center Continental Ballroom email jon baker jbaker08@... for concert information and Michaela micaela@... to help with getting a congressional resolution, if you want to help with PR for the event email Alia alia@... or Adaeze ada_o@...
• Oct 11^th Darfur Fundraiser 6:30-8:30 PM at the LeftBank 2424 18^th Street NW, we will have a table, volunteers email alia alia@... or Adaeze ada_o@..., We are now co-sponsoring the event and it would be great if we had a strong presence, students are $15.00 and we get a % of all proceeds

Announcements: 

• Bracelets are $2.00 each and if you don't wear one we'll give you mean looks
• Julia has ordered tshirts for people who gave her money, she will let you know when they come in, if you ordered a shirt and still need to pay make sure you give me the money so she can place your order.  
• We are going to be working on creating a workshop to meet new members and train everyone on what's currently going on in Darfur, if you'd like to work on this contact Justin at Jzorn@...
• Please Please Please pay dues, we ask for $10.00. 
• Sara Weisman's office hours are as follows Tuesday 3:30-5 and 8-9, Wednesday 1-2, Thursday 3:30-5 Room 440 of the Marvin Center

Good news- Zoellick pressured China to divest from Sudan this week

            -the UNWFP (United Nations World Food Program) claimed that this month was the best month in terms of their capacity to distribute food to Darfur. However, there is still a GREAT need for food in the region 20 fold what they are already distributing.

Not so good news- SLA claimed they captured a city on the Darfur border to Chad. This might signal a new wave of violence in the region.

Sara sent out a New York Times article by Nicholas Kristoff PLEASE read it…he expresses how we as a country need something to MAKE us act against genocide
