Media Advisory for Thursday, Dec. 1, 12pm-2pm

Georgetown , GW Students to Hold Bake Sale for U.S. Lobbyist

Representing "Murderous" Sudanese Government

Goal is to Help Offset Loss of $530K Contract, So Lobbyist Could

Drop Sudanese Government as Client and Stay in Business

WHAT:           Bake sale for the newly hired U.S. lobbyist for the Sudanese government, Robert Cabelly and his firm, C/R International. "Cabelly, a former State Department hand who worked in the Bush I and Clinton administrations on African issues, and his firm have a contract worth $530,000 a year, not including transportation expenses, to represent the murderous regime," according to The Washington Post (see The Washington Post article at http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/10/25/AR2005102501538.html).  The bake sale goal is to raise funds to help offset the costs Cabelly and C/R International would incur if they dropped the Sudanese government as a client, so they could stay in business.

BACKGROUND:

The Sudanese Government and its paramilitary allies, the Janjaweed militias, have killed at least 180,000 innocent people, driven 2.5 million people from their homes, and left 3.5 million people without sufficient food to sustain themselves. Despite the facts, the State Department granted C/R International a waiver from an order barring U.S. firms from doing business with the Sudanese government. The Chairman of the bipartisan Congressional Human Rights Caucus, U.S. Rep. Frank Wolf (R-VA), said he was "shocked" by the State Department's decision. Wolf wrote a letter to Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, noting that the waiver "conflicted with the administration's push ... to tighten sanctions" on Sudan (see floor statement at http://www.house.gov/wolf/news/2005/10-17-Sudan.html ).
