While social justice organizations shine the spotlight on Darfur,
the intensified violence that has plagued the Congo since 1998, has
gone largely unmentioned. Since that year, the death toll in the Congo
has reached 31,000 per month with approximately 4.7 million people
killed and at least 40,000 women and girls raped. As if that isn't
enough, 800,000 children are AIDS orphans and 2.25 million people have
been displaced. Even in the midst of this turmoil courageous and truly
empowering efforts are being waged which must not only be respected but
also highlighted and supported
Join SALSA, the African Women Council, Inc., and Friends of the Congo
for a public multi-media education and information
session on the Challenge in the Congo. This session will discuss the
wars in Africa in general and the Great Lakes Region in particular.
Come and view video footage about: the difficulties in establishing
peace and ending violence against women and children; the role of women
in the recent referendum on the Congolese constitution and the upcoming
elections; and what you can do to work with Congolese women who are
extricating themselves and their families from poverty, war and
deprivation.
Presenters:
Marie-Rose Sirikari, founder & president, African Women Council, Inc.
Maurice Carney, co-founder, Friends of the Congo
This event is FREE and open to the public but because space is very limited please RSVP here! A $5.00 donation to support the work of the African Women's Council, Inc. is suggested but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
