Hey STAND Friends-
The Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Bill is appearing before the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Foreign Operations TOMORROW! Maryland's Sen. Mikulski, Vermont's Patrick Leahy (Chair), Illinois' Dick Durbin, New Hampshire's Judd Gregg (Ranking Member) , Pennsylvania's Arlen Specter, all sit on the subcommittee (as well as people from Hawaii, Iowa, South Dakota, Louisiana, Rhode Island, Kentucky, Utah, Missouri, Kansas, and Tennessee --email Sean for names of those), so we at STAND are trying to get as many people to call these senators as possible, so please do so if you get a chance! This could be huge for getting money appropriated to peacekeeping in Darfur! Thanks!
Office numbers are available for these senators at darfurscores.org. Please call a little after 9 am, as we don't know when the vote is going to come up. If you can't call then, still call at a later time, just make sure it's ASAP!!!
Also, please please please report your call at www.standnow.org/chapter/advocacy_event_report
This could be really important to getting enough money for peacekeeping in Darfur, so please urge everyone in your chapter as well as all of your friends to call in tomorrow!
Thanks!
The Talking Points are as follows:
- Call the office and ask to speak to the legislative assistant for foreign policy. Say you're a constituent calling about an urgent piece of upcoming Darfur legislation.
- If s/he is not available, speak to the person who picks up the phone.
- Talking Points:
- I'm a constituent from (city), calling on behalf of (x-many) constituents at (your STAND chapter, and/or other group) who care about stopping the genocide in Darfur.
- I'm calling about the peacekeeping allocation for Darfur in the Emergency Supplemental Appropriations bill.
- Currently there is $150 million in the bill for peacekeeping in Darfur. This amount is barely enough to support the current force through the end of September.
- Much more is needed to fund the peacekeeping mission as it expands to almost 3 times its current troop force.
- The protection of civilians in Darfur requires significant financial support.
- Please support additional funding for peacekeeping in Darfur.
- Thank you. I will follow up with you after today
