*General Body Meeting: Tuesday 8-9 MC 310*

GW STAND is mentioned in John Prendergast and Don Cheadle's new book - Not on Our Watch: the Mission to End Genocide in Darfur and Beyond.  They included some great things about GW's work in the past and we should all be proud and excited to continue our work in the future.

"In april of 2005, the GWU chapter of STAND organized a 24 hour fast outside the State Department in an effort to shame officials there.  The group also sponsored a National Lobbying Day to bring in students from other parts of the country to express their concerns over US inaction in the face of genocide."

" ...in oct 2005 when a group of students (GW STAND!!!) heard the government of Sudan had hired Robert Cabelly, from the lobbying firm C/R International, for $530,000, they decided to take action...a month later, students held a bake sale outside his office to help raise money for C/R International and Cabelly so they would no longer have to represent the government of Sudan to earn a living.  While the students did not quite raise $530,000 with their baked goods, shortly after the bake sale Cabelly stopped representing the Sudanese government"

Awesome work to all those who participated in those events, and hopefully it will inspire everyone else to keep working hard!!!

*DC Divestment Meeting:

Tomorrow at 8:30 in the Ivory Tower food court to discuss plans on how we can change and advance our legislation in the city council and divest millions of DC's pension funds from companies that profit from the genocide.
Come to learn about divestment.
Come to make a change.

*Event: Yom Hashoah

When: Monday, April 16

Time: 7-10pm

Place: Marvin Center

On April 16th, the GW community will be participating in events not only to remember the victims of the Holocaust, but also to reflect on those affected by the current atrocities in Darfur. This is an opportunity to educate ourselves about the dangers of discrimination and hatred in our world. It is our responsibility to heighten awareness about these issues and to make sure all crimes against humanity are never forgotten. Throughout the day, we will be creating a paper-link chain with the names of those whose lives were lost in the Holocaust; as we read a name, we will create a new link. The entire chain, along with photos of those lost in the Holocaust and personal testimonies from Holocaust survivors, will be present at our exhibit. We hope you will join us for this important event!

Monday, April 16th 7-10pm: Continental Ballroom of The Marvin Center:

"Linking the Past to the Present, an Exhibit Recognizing the Holocaust and Darfur"

To RSVP or to get more information, email Marissa at marissas@...

We need to get volunteers and hopefully the entire e-board of STAND can come out to help, especially for the evening event in the Marvin Center. There's also an all day event of reading names in University Yard; Hillel would love for us to have volunteers to help read. Melissa will be passing around a sign-up sheet at our next meeting.

*A Message from Mid-Atlantic STAND:

Hi Amazing Mid-Atlantic upSTANDers!

Now more than ever, it's important that our members of Congress know that we expect them to stop this genocide! Darfur Report Cards are in, and it's high time for higher grades!

On April 16 – 27, 2007, join hundreds of students around the country in lobbying our members of Congress in their home offices near our schools.

It's not too late to register for STAND's National Lobby Days: High Time for Higher Grades! You don't have to be a superhero to lobby, but talking directly to your elected officials is one of the most powerful steps you, as an individual activist or chapter member, can take.

STAND's advocacy team will walk you through the whole process, and give you talking points and materials so that your meeting is succesful. Register online , and then join us at any of the following times to learn more about lobbying from STAND's advocacy team:

Saturday, April 7- 6:00pm EST
Tuesday, April 10- 9:00pm EST
Thursday, April 12- 10:00pm EST
Saturday, April 14- 2:00pm EST
Wednesday, April 18- 6:00pm EST
Sunday, April 22- 3:00pm EST

CALL (712) 451-6000 on one of the above dates and times and enter access code 446249# to participate in a training session.

Have any questions? Please see the attached National Lobby Days flier. I'm also always available, either by phone or email. I can't wait to see what each of your chapters is doing for these great weeks of action!

Peace,
Jess
