The Bravo Channel's got a new show focusing on the horror genre
called "100 Scariest Movie Moments". Today it was announced that the
one and only Stephen King, who is very rarely seen on camera these
days discussing pretty much anything, has joined the amazing lineup
of horror celebs, discussing some of the film adaptations of his work
that made the list.

The show will air over 5 nights this Halloween season, most likely
finishing off with the top scariest movie moment of all time on the
5th. How much you want to bet it's either the shower scene in Psycho
or something out of Jaws? Either way, I'll be happy.

There are horror films about Halloween, Friday the 13th, Thursday the 12th,
Saturday the 14th, St. Valentines Day, Christmas, Mothers Day, and just about
every holiday . . . but no Easter or Passover monster movies!
Why not?
Can't they come up with a killer berserk bunny or maniacal matzoh?

Classic creatures reunite for MONSTER TV

Modern vampire Angel became a puppet on a recent episode, so why not
the screen's vintage ghouls? That's the inspiration behind MONSTER
TV, a new project being launched by Bill Diamond Productions.
Diamond, who produced the Fox series DR. ROCK'S DINOSAUR ADVENTURES,
worked with the Jim Henson team on THE DARK CRYSTAL and LABYRINTH and
built Audrey II for the original national tour of LITTLE SHOP OF
HORRORS, tells Fango, "It's a half-hour program in which the famous
monsters develop their own television show. Their fan base has
disappeared over the years, and they realize that there are a lot of
TV reality shows out there, so they decide to create their own
channel.

"The lead character is Boris Von Frankenstein," Diamond
continues, "who sends these two bats who work for him out to gather
all the creatures and get them involved with the Monster TV station.
They turn the castle and the old lab into a TV studio and create
their own shows. There's Frankenstein's monster, the Bride, Dracula,
the werewolf, the Phantom of the Opera, the Creature, Jekyll and Hyde
and the Hunchback of Notre Dame; their makeup artist is Lon Chaney
Sr., and many, many more also appear."

Diamond reveals that he was able to model the Boris Von Frankenstein
design (pictured) and those for both the Lon Chaney Sr. and Jr.
puppets on the actual stars, thanks to the involvement of their
descendants. "My goal was to get the family members of the original
actors involved," he says. "Sara Karloff was the first, and she just
loved the idea. She has helped me connect with the others, including
Ron Chaney; we haven't gotten Bela Lugosi Jr. yet, but we're working
on him. That was important to me, because there's a lot of history
and trivia that comes up throughout the series; that's what the fans
want to see. One example is that Boris holds a costume party and
dresses up as Captain Hook; Karloff actually played Hook on Broadway,
so that's a piece of trivia not everyone might know that we could put
in. That's one of the things that interested the families—that we're
getting into the actors, not just the characters they played."
Diamond offers another homage he'd like to see happen involving a
current makeup star: "At some point, we'd like to approach Rick Baker
and see if he'd want to be Chaney's assistant."

Chaney Jr.'s visage will be used for his actor character in MONSTER
TV, while the werewolf he becomes (like Frankenstein's creation) will
be more generic. Diamond designed all the characters and is currently
working on storyboards for the show, with fabrication to begin soon
and filming planned for the end of the summer. Diamond will direct
the first installment from a script he wrote with Gina Gencarelli;
his sons Mark (FX creator and editor) and Richard (set designer) are
also involved. "We'd like to debut it on DVD by October," Diamond
says, "but we're also going to see what kind of interest there is in
the TV world. We're thinking about debuting at on of the conventions,
with Sara involved."

Seeing what sort of interest there would be in having seminar get togethers
in the general Cuyahoga county, NE-Ohio area?

I am volunteering my home/workshop/yard in Cleveland Heights as a host
location where we can get together every other week(end) or so during the
summer. Thinking something like a saturday late morning, early afternoon
barbeque and learning jam for 2-4 hours. Of course this isnt written in
blood, depends on what is most suitable for the immoral majority.

We could get a number of folks with talents in different disciplines to take
the lead in a different topic/project each get together.
For example, foam tombstone creation, techniques and finishing, or how to
make an air cannon, how to make molds, how to work with latex, prosthetics
and woochies, make up application and airbrushing, costuming on the cheap,
basic pneumatics, etc.

With the plethora of haunted houses, troupes, suppliers and prop makers in
the region are there enough folks who would want to participate?
Is there interest in this sort of seminar gathering for the area haunters?

Please, get back to me, spread the word among your cohorts, hire skywriters
to get the word out, implore the powers that be to bring you fruitful haunt
harvest.......

well im not privy to any sales figures from the wholesalers, and i
doubt they'd be forthcoming with the figures. even if sales were
down, they'd be hard pressed to admit it, as they dont want to throw
a wet blanket on the festivities.

the mood of the trade show was upbeat as far as i could tell, because
sales were up last year well over the disaterous years of 2001 and
2002. i know this from my own retail endevours, and from discussions
with my suppliers during last year's season as we were restocking
merchandise. i dont know how much "pushing" there will be because the
mass merchandisers are still stinging from '01 and '02.

you have to remember the mood of the entire country changed rather
suddenly last year and it didnt happen till late in the year when the
preparations for halloween were already in the pipeline, and the
merchandisers were expecting another down year.

If anyone could tell us what the actual result was at the Halloween
trade show that would be terrific, i would love to hear if Halloween
is gonna be a pushed holiday or if its gonna be a letdown like last
year. being on a Sunday this year i don't know how much is gonna be
going on.

now you have my curiosity peaked. who is the "largest market segment"
of whom you speak?

i was just going by the attitude of the other attendees as i passed
them in the asiles. 2003's croud was darn near funereal, this years
was much improved. also, this year i had to wait a couple minutes to
get waited on, whereas last year the salespeople were just hanging
out with very little to do. maybe i just hit it on a good day. i'll
know a bit more tomorrow when i speak with a few friends who are
exhibitors and ask how it was overall.

Interesting, what I hear so far is the show is too limited for the largest
market segment to attend (only 4 rows of the show), and attendance is way
down.
Not t mention infighting on the board of the show
I know about 50 of the attendees (probably more just havent heard or paid
attention to exactl who) and havent heard such a remotely close upbeat
report as you make.
Hope your right, and perhaps once these folks return from the full weekend
too, there will be likewise reports.

Well youre close. its the 11th thru the 16th. and yes its HUGE! but
before anyone gets the idea it would be fun to attend, it's not open
to the public. you must be a halloween retailer to attend and be able
to prove it several different ways. (theyve really tighened up on who
can attend this year.. retailers have an uphill battle bringing a
guest)

doctor and his fiancée to kidnap his prey for a brain transplant, but
the procedure goes deadly wrong. Horror great Peter Cushing stars.

2. Dracula Has Risen from the Grave - When the niece of a prominent
clergyman becomes Dracula's victim, the monsignor vows to put a stop
to Dracula's deadly ways. For this third incarnation of Bram Stoker's
signature story, Academy Award®- winning cinematographer Freddy
Francis directs Hammer Films' leading man Christopher Lee in the
title role.

Sorry to cross post, but there are so many groups I belong to, this is the
most efficient method to get this info out.
I offer this asset to EVERYONE hence the cross post.

A centralized server is now set for all prop makers, haunters, etc to place
and get videos.
An archive for all to view.

I am requesting folks upload past years haunt videos, (I'll be installing
Halloween_L 2002 vid, as I have my copies), how to videos, seminars, cool
halloween vids, demonstrations, etc for all to share. I have spoken with a
number of folks who have files they plan on uploading shortly, thank you to
you all.

The FTP is set up and ready to receive.

Downloading access is not available until we can get some files in place.
If all goes well, and folks start uploading files I will open download
access next week.

In the meanwhile, I have published some instructions regarding uploading
files here:
http://www.minionsweb.com/vids.htm
