Thoughts on the Pilgrims and Thanksgiving
In the wake of terrorist activity in our country, both foreign and domestic, and
the possible impending war with Iraq, we have seen people turn to prayer like
nothing before. Without acknowledging that higher power, we truly can do
nothing. When you are in Washington, D.C. sometime, go to the Capital Rotunda
and the paintings within. There you will see a painting called "Departure of the
Pilgrims." With all the busyness inherent in preparing to leave Holland for the
New World, the Pilgrims set aside a time and a place to pray. Without the
intervention of God on a hazardous voyage, all their plans would be in vain.
Thus they took time to commit it all to Him.
So it should be on our hazardous journey of life. Set aside time, in your own
way, to acknowledge God in all that you do. And likely you will find him
preserving you in a terrible storm like the Pilgrims on their journey to
establish a colony here in America.

Site Update
Since its inauguration this past September, History Comes Alive has gone through
some major updates, which you will find interesting. To celebrate the
Thanksgiving season, we are offering links about the Pilgrims, as well as the
Mayflower Compact online. Also, be sure to check out our featured reenactment,
the Jefferson Thanksgiving Festival in beautiful Charlottesville, Virginia.
We are remembering the passing of noted historian Stephen Ambrose by featuring
one of his books in our Book Gallery. Undaunted Courage outlines the life of
Meriwether Lewis and gives fascinating insights into the Lewis and Clark
Expedition.
Lastly, we are pleased to announce that our new Photo Gallery is up. In it are
photos of the Jefferson Thanksgiving reenactment, the Black Hawk War, and a
special installment on the Lewis and Clark Expedition with fascinating facts to
ponder.

Future Plans
Our future plans for History Comes Alive include links involving medicine in
historical times, honoring our American Flag, costuming, and introducing a brand
new Civil War fiction series debuting in January 2003. The poll we have been
conducting shows an interest in Colonial History, so plans will be to develop a
Colonial History page, including a visit to Williamsburg in our Photo Gallery.
Stay tuned for details!

Thoughts On Our Current History
As you know, we are in a time of upheaval after the tragic loss of
the Columbia and hovering on the verge of war with Iraq. Now more
than ever we must look to the annuls of history and to the One who
has guided us through these times that try the soul. The United
States as a nation is not foreign to difficult times. And what makes
this nation survive difficult times are those who turned to their
Creator for help and for guidance. So take time to consider this
period of our history, and in the way you choose, seek the One who
holds all of history in the palm of His hand.

Site Update
You will notice several new changes to the web site. In celebration
of the new Civil War movie release, Gods and Generals, HCA is
offering a forum where you can give your views regarding the movie,
take a poll, and / or chat with a friend(s). We would like to hear
your comments.
If you haven't checked it out yet, the Educational page offers a
great site called Museum Stuff that offers links and information
about any and all museums! Have fun exploring.
We are also pleased to offer a new Civil War fiction series coming
soon on e-book. IN THE CROSSFIRE will debut March 19th, but you can
read a chapter right now on the Web site.

A Wealth of Information
Just recently I needed to contact a historical society out of state
for research material. I located the historical society on the
Internet, e-mailed the contact, and was able to make my requests
known. The contact was kind enough to research my requests and make
available to me photocopies of the research material I requested for
a nominal fee.
Historical societies can provide a wealth of information for research
purposes as well as information about the area. Not only do many of
them house rare documents, they also offer museums, walking tours of
the area, and other historical opportunities. I encourage you to make
use of your local historical society and others around the nation.

Site Update
History Comes Alive has been updated with new links. If you have
recently visited, there are now links to reenactment outfitters. Also
there are brand-new links to the presidential children, and also a
great portal site that will link you to any and all information about
the Civil War!

second book in the Civil War Trilogy - Battle Cry of Freedom,
entitled IMPRISONED. Josiah is taken prisoner and so is his heart...
Find out what happens as a Union soldier endures both the prison camp
of Andersonville and the loss of his love.
We also are offering a link to a contemporary novel for women that

readers are sharing with the author that their love for history has
been rekindled because of this novel! The book is also linked with

fine books are on our book page.

A Wealth of Information
As an author I spend quite a deal of time at the library doing research. Of
course the Internet has opened up a wide field of research opportunities, of
which History Comes Alive seeks to display those sites that are most
interesting. However, it is also good to take a journey to the local library and
see what abounds. Besides the stacks of books, magazines, videos and CDs, there
are librarians eager to help with any and all inquiries. Recently I was in need
of interlibrary loans to research a historical novel and found the librarian
very helpful in discovering books that would be of interest as well as setting
up the loan. As such I acquired books for my project from across the country (!)
Interlibrary loans are a wonderful tool to help in researching and exploring our
American History. Whether for a research paper, project, or simply to find out
more about a time period as you prepare to visit a historical site this coming
spring and summer, try your local library for a wealth of
information.
Also, be on the lookout for library sales, of which many occur in the spring and
summer months. Many libraries hold used book sales where one can gain all kinds
of great fiction and non-fiction at terrific prices. And not only that, but you
are also helping your local libraries purchase new material. So take advantage
of what your library has to offer.

What's New and Forthcoming?
History Comes Alive is proud to add new and interesting links including a
Woman's History magazine, a sleuth site for kids to explore Colonial History,
and other great sites. Don't forget that the Lewis and Clark bicentennial is
underway. Many activities are slated to begin this May as it is the 200th
anniversary of the start to the Corps of Discovery's two year long journey.
Events will be ongoing the next two years, so be sure to visit the Lewis and
Clark site to see what is happening. There will also be future anniversary
celebrations as well, including the founding of Jamestown in 2007 and Abraham
Lincoln's birth in 2009. Great historical events to look forward to! Be a part
of these special events. You are living in a great time in American History to
discover where we have come from as a nation and where we are going. Don’t miss
out. Take the time to plan some trips this spring and summer. Visit a museum or
a presidential home. See a battlefield where patriots and soldiers gave
the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms. Check out a colonial farm or visit a
plantation from the 1800's. See a reenactment. Don't think of history as a
textbook, but SEE and EXPERIENCE it for yourself!
For ideas, start at HISTORY COMES ALIVE http://www.historycomesalive.com
In the future we plan to create a page devoted to the Wild West and will
eventually create a page devoted to women in American History. Should you wish
to contribute links to sites for possible inclusion on these new pages, you may
forward your suggested links to historyauthor2002@...
On our book page, History Comes Alive is pleased to announce the third book in
the Civil War Trilogy - Battle Cry of Freedom, entitled ENEMY OF THE VALLEY. The
Union Army has burned the Shenandoah Valley, leaving the people filled with
hatred for anyone who has northern ties. Even so Nathan Wendall falls in love
with a fine northern woman. Her life and those of her family are now in peril.
Can Nathan douse the flaming fire of revenge before it's too late?
This third book, available only in electronic format, completes a unique and
compelling Civil War trilogy. All of the titles are available and are easy to
read on your handheld PDA or right on your computer screen. Or if you wish, they
can easily be printed out and read at your leisure. We think of it as history
meets modern technology!
You can read more about this book, along with the other books in the series at
http://awe-struck.net/AUTHORS32/enemy.html
We will also consider other non-fiction and fiction titles for display on the
book page. However they must deal with American History before the 20th century
and must be creative and interesting. We also stress that all historical novels
under consideration must be of the "sweet" or Christian variety. You may e-mail
the editor for more information about submitting titles.
(Please note - do to virus outbreaks, we will not accept e-mail attachments of
any kind unless first approved by the editor. Do not send any attachments unless
so directed)
