Hello Pamela and all,

EtherPad is even more powerful than that; I figure you should have the benefit of knowing its real secret during the first meeting. I probably cannot attend, so contributing now.

EtherPad's secret power is that it supports true collaborative writing in the big space!
The right-hand space is like a chat track. Here is an example of what you can do in the big left space:
So yes, put your agenda of topics into it, with some of what we used to call carriage returns when we actually used typewriters with 'carriages' to carry all the keys that printed the letters on the page!  :-) between topics.'
So, you start talking about the first topic, and you get an idea! So someone writes it down under its topic on the left big space. And I, an editor, see a typo, and I go in and correct it! And someone else writes down an idea, and another person realizes there is even more to the idea, and they fit what they are thinking about into just the right place for it, within the original idea.

So let's say that on the second topic, the group chooses a course of action that they want to communicate. So they write down the course of action, and a couple of people make small changes to it, and then everyone agrees that that is a good statement of what they want to do. But that just holds the thought in existence! Now it's time to write the publicity! So someone makes a copy of the statement and pastes it in below the original. Next, people start (simultaneously, mind you!) typing in a salutation, an introduction, a summary, and a call to action. In five minutes it's done! A couple of improvements have been made, but mostly, the people with the inspiration for a piece of the whole had a clear sense of how to say it. (Now that's fractal with how we need to run society!) Or as the mystics say, as above, so below.

So that's the idea. You can do any kind of collaborative writing with it! Have fun and make a difference for life on earth!

Regards,

Mark

You are invited to join me for a "First Thursday" open meeting on May 5th at http://etherpad.openstewardship.net/0w8jG05iwR

Time to be agreed - probably 13.00 GMT 14.00 Nigerian and London time, 16.00 E African time, Let me know if that is too late for you. I want to make it that late so that people in America have a better chance to join us. But if it is difficult for some other people we can think again.

Some of you will remember the old "First Thursday" meetings that we used to hold in the worknets chatroom. Now I have discovered etherpads and I think they could provide ideal places for us to meet. You can access an etherpad fom a cybercafe - all you need is the url  -
http://etherpad.openstewardship.net/0w8jG05iwR - for this month. Ther si no need to download any additional software.

There are two spaces on an etherpad:

Chat -
There is a chat box on the right hand side, with different colours for different people. (I don't know how many different colours there are - we will find out)

Main panel for agenda - There is also a main panel, where we can put a list of things that people want to discuss. Perhaps this time we will need to spend a bit of time simply getting used to using the etherpad - but soon I hope we will be using it according to an agenda so we can have productive and focussed discussions (we will put time aside before and after the main meeting  so people can have a chance to chat informally together.)

Even if you can't come to the actual meeting you can click on the link and have a look at the Etherpad. If you do call in , please leave a greeting in the chat box ready for the next person who arrives.

I hope to see you there.

Hi Mark

Thanks for your interest and encouragement - sorry you probably will not be able to join us this time (but First Thursdays happen every month so there should be more opportunities). I appreciate the suggestions and I hope that we will gradually move up to using our etherpads in the way you suggest .

I am taking your first suggestions as the outline for our first level of introduction to etherpads

i.e.
"EtherPad's secret power is that it supports true collaborative writing in the big space!

I will try to help everyone to feel comfortable and confident using those first aspects of etherpads - then I hope we will gradually work down your list until we are competent with all that you have shared with us.

Of course we will also be using the etherpad to run our meetings (so building the skills will be a gradual process going hand in hand with using it).

We have the some structure now for our skill building - but you may need to be patient with us as we gradually build our skills (remember that we cannot speak to each other with voice as we work and for most people who come to First Thursday English is not their preferred language.

Subject: Disruptive thoughts about making a living

Diane and all, I received a thoughtful reply from Dave Gray
http://www.davegrayinfo.com , an entrepreneur I'd love to work for, who is
a creator of Gamestorming http://www.gogamestorm.com and thinker about the
Connected Company. I share my letter to him which continues my thoughts
on "making a living". I share with Janet Feldman's Holistic Helping and
John Roger's Cyfranogi. The latter group is where I first shared my
stories on the "money mind". I appreciate answers to my questions at the
end! Andrius Kulikauskas, ms@...
-----------------------------------

Dave,

Thank you for your letter. What a wonderful person-to-person essay. I'm
glad you think of me.

Jay likewise noted that I should be able to apply my own methods of
"figuring thing out" to my challenge of making a living. As they say, eat
my own dog food.

I've put up a new section at my website:
http://www.selflearners.net/ways/?d=Money
with 79 ways extracted from anecdotes that I wrote down in 2006 about my
"money mind". I was able to populate all 24 "rooms" in my "house of
knowledge".

Here's a summary of how they come together for me. We can start with:
* Working. Don't be idle, unproductive or destructive.
Then there are two independent threads, Giving and Taking.
* Giving: Give everything that I have. Appreciate what others have to
give. Learn what is fair in giving. Invest in a culture of giving.
* Taking: Accept what I am given. Maximize what I can take. Learn my
limits. Steward what I am given.
(In business, especially corporations, there is a similar dichotomy
between investors and managers). Such full-fledged giving and taking feed
each other. In my experience, they are only loosely coupled, however, by
Working-in-Parallel based on a three-cycle of Aligning our principles,
Pursuing them, and Taking Stock. ("Common knowledge" sometimes assumes
that giving and taking are tightly coupled, but that goes counter to some
of my personal experience.)

Giving and Taking are in sync when we Live As If We Were All One Person.
We can then substitute for ourselves with Valuation. Such a substitution
(much like a model substituting for reality) takes place on four levels:
* Peace of mind (A decision substitutes for the decision maker.)
* Motivation (External motivation substitutes for internal motivation.)
* Money (Compensation substitutes for disparity in contributions.)
* Humility (Autonomy substitutes for morality)
In the case of "peace of mind", we conflate ourselves with our avatar,
which is to say, as decision maker we are one with our decisions.
Whereas, in "humility", we divorce ourselves from our avatar. If people
truly want to hang themselves, or be fat, drunk, stupid, mean, sick, ugly,
filthy, destructive, uptight, hurtful, if they truly want that, then we'll
sell them the rope in whatever color they want. (Yes, I get stuck at that
point. Perhaps I doubt if they are truly free.)

Humility (or Service) then takes six concrete forms that pair the four
levels of Servant and Served. They consider what can be done "within the
system" (the market, the firm) (whereas Giving and Taking take place
"outside the system", among family, friends, neighbors). The mindsets are
given by the following questions:
* How does it seem to me? Appraise. The calm Servant provides the
motivated Served with an appraisal, judgment, price.
* What else should I be doing? Audit. The calm Servant provides the rich
Served with a budget, alternatives, substitutions.
* Would it make any difference? Negotiate. The motivated Servant provides
the rich Served with choices, priorities, contracts.
* What do I have control over? Sell. The rich Servant provides the humble
Served with possibilities, favors, exceptions.
* Am I able to consider the question? Cut one's losses. The motivated
Servant provides the humble Served with closure, clarity.
* Is this the way things should be? Consult. The calm Servant provides the
humble Served with overview, advice.

The gap between Servant and Served, expressed in the six ways above, comes
together, in general, as Conscientiousness.

-------------

Dave, I've much more to write. I put in "disruptive truths" in the title
because I'll want to share my notes from talking with Kenneth Taylor.
Some of my "disruptive truths" are, I suppose, learning to live as family
(Giving and Taking), not just Serving (although maybe I'm wrong), and
especially, "meeting each other half-way" (rather than Servant and
Served). But maybe there's something wrong with how I've been thinking.

Jay got me to think, What is my general method, if any? And I would boil
it down to this:
1) *Obey* the teacher.
2) If you can't obey the teacher, then *believe* the good student, follow
their example.
3) If you can't believe any student, then simply *care* about the subject.
4) If you don't care much, then *be honest* so that you don't get stuck,
and you keep trying in new ways.
5) If you are honest, then you will start to care, you will appreciate
those who are believable, and you will find the Teacher (that is, God) who
you can obey.

In my case of "making a living", I suppose the teacher is "common
knowledge", but my experience has gone counter to that. My thoughts above
lead me to think that the relevant God for me here is Conscientiousness's
God, perhaps my Conscience. I'm also realizing that there's a rift
between me and society where I don't feel that "we're living as if we're
one person". I generally don't see any place for me, for the kinds of
thoughts that I get to share in this letter. So then I resist playing
along with such a system.

Dave, your and Jay's letters affect how I thought through my thoughts
above, with special emphasis on Humility and Service.

I'll think what this means for me, practically. I should focus especially
on Conscientiousness (thus, Obeying), which helps me be thorough in going
through possible steps to avoid bankruptcy, and to find a way to make a
living and not be a burden on other people. Included in that, and after
that, is focusing on my Giving (Believing), and after that, Taking
(Caring).

In terms of Conscientiousness, within the next two months I need to either
find a long term income of $5,000 per month (so that I can pay off my
debts of $140,000 in four or five years), find a short term income of
$2,500 that would relate to applying myself, or go bankrupt. Given my
abnormal resume, I'm not likely to even be considered for a job from
somebody who doesn't know me. And given my moral sensitivity, I don't
think I would be wanted for most types of work in today's world that pay
$3,000 or upwards. More importantly, God doesn't want me to look for
typical work, but wants me to apply myself creatively. God has a lot
invested in me.

So I think that what I should do is what I am doing, which is to develop
that directory of "ways of figuring things out". It makes "good" use of
my creative talents. "Good" for God and perhaps "good" for people who
aren't even born yet. I think it's as likely of a way of developing a
business as anything else I know.

Dave, I believe in you as an entrepreneur. You're creative and your
clients are happy.

I'm building the directory regardless, even if it means that I'll live as
a mooch, like Jesus did.

What are services that I could offer as I build the directory?
http://www.selflearners.net/ways/
* Why would a client or sponsor pay me to document and share ways, in the
Public Domain, for specific domains that interest them, such as medicine,
law, agriculture, finance, insurance, arts, sports, etc.? What could I
deliver for them?  I can write blog posts; do video or audio interviews;
do summaries - diagrams, reports, videos. I can promote my clients or
sponsors by engaging online groups to gather such ways, highlight such
thinkers and thank my sponsors. My lab did such work for Leon Benjamin
http://www.winningbysharing.net on behalf of Mornflake cereal and he was
very happy and would like to give me more such work.

We were considered extremely "authentic" and I think I can reach
"skeptical" groups.
http://kudocities.com/cities/london/conversations/mornflake-outreach-what-do-you\
-want-to-do-with-your-life?page=6
I can work for companies like Monsanto, Exxon, Microsoft etc. that many
people hate.
* Why might people contribute money to crowdfund my work? I could just do
what I'm doing, or I could relate it to creating learning materials,
especially games, for self learning in areas like basic math.

Dave, thank you again for thinking of me!

Thank you to all who think along.

I'm getting ready to seek sponsors (you!) to pool together funds (large
and small) so that I could work for half a year on my directory of "ways
of figuring things out".

I ask for your help. What would be meaningful rewards for sponsors?

Even small donations will make a big help because many small donations
will attract larger donors and certainly lift my spirits. So whether
you'll be able to donate $1, $10 or $100, it will be a great help. Here
are some rewards I'm thinking of:

* Design an investigatory game with original artwork and coaching by Skype
to help you learn what you want to learn! (8 hours) ($200)
* Coach you to use the "house of knowledge" for your investigations, both
personally and in a group through Skype conference calls. (4 hours) ($100)
* Official Self Learner at selflearners.net, I help you set up your
profile (including your deepest value in life, your investigatory
question, your dream-in-life), sign you up for our email group, link up
through Twitter and chats. ($30)
* Include your anecdote or story, how you came to understand something.
(1/2 hour). $10
* Vote on a domain for me to analyze. ($1 per vote, up to 10 votes)

What kind of reward would be most attractive to you or others you know?

I'll be asking our help to publicize my effort. If I can get funding for
6 months, then I think I have a good chance to develop my directory into a
business.

Thank you for helping me! How could this help you, too? I share a letter
with more news about what I'm up to.

Dave,

I appreciate your ideas. Thank you!

I have two months before I need to commit myself to going bankrupt.
Whether or not I do go bankrupt, I think that documenting and sharing
"ways of figuring things out" is what I should be doing now. It will be
relevant for me for at least a few years. And it's plausible that I can
make a living from it, as much as anything else that I can do in the next
two months.

So for the next two months I'm exploring how to make that work as a
business. If I decide to go bankrupt, then my needs become simpler, and I
will have more options and more time. Currently, I need less than $1,000
per month for myself and then another $1,500 for my loan payments.

I'm glad that you find the directory readable enough. My plan is to seek
crowdfunding for that, preferably at http://www.kickstarter.com They want
creative projects that we are passionate about. I can be quite passionate
about the directory. I can focus on writing up my own "ways of figuring
things out" from my philosophy and my life. I can also offer prizes that
encourage sponsors to have me share and document ways from other domains
as well, such as math, business, law, medicine, arts, etc. as well as from
individuals.

I plan to seek $15,000 which will keep me afloat for six months, enough
time for me to improve the directory and look for other related clients,
sponsors, projects, income.

Kickstarter gave some helpful statistics
http://blog.kickstarter.com/post/5014573685/happy-birthday-kickstarter
They've distributed about 40 million dollars to 8,000 projects, an average
of 5,000 dollars each. About 10,000 projects were unsuccessful. So the
success rate is about 43%. But the success rate is much higher for
projects that get at least one pledge (52%), at least 30% of their goal
(90%), or at least 90% of their goal (99.99%).

I think I should try. But I want to be sure to formulate my project and
my prizes so they are attractive. I need to study successful projects.
Here's a sample list of what I could do:

* Document an entire discipline, along with an executive summary, diagram
"cheat sheet". (1 month) ($3,000)
* For you or any person, dead or alive, analyze their ways of figuring
things out through their anecdotes, writings and video Skype interviews.
(2 weeks) ($1,500)
* Train you or another person to document a domain. (1 week) ($800)
* Workshop or talk (3 days plus travel, accommodations) ($400)

I appreciate help, what kinds of rewards are most relevant, realistic,
meaningful, desirable? Would a book (or e-book) be desirable? Or not?

Generally, I can work at about $20 per hour on work that builds up the
directory or serves the community. $2,500 per month for 30 hours per week
is 120 hours per month is $20 per hour.

Many of the groups of people that I'm involved with are rather poor. But
they might donate small amounts, which is very significant in attracting
larger donors. They might help get the word out. They might sign a
petition and leave comments, encouragements, suggestions, and "votes" on
what new domains I should document for ways of figuring things out.

My work on the "ways of figuring things out" hasn't caught on with anybody
yet. But the directory has made it more concrete, including my work in
specific domains such as math or money. I'm glad you found it readable
and my mother did, too. I need feedback how to help people see and say
that it is something that we need.

I'm thinking of adding a navigation in terms of investigatory questions
(like Why does God allow evil? or How to make a living?). I've pursued
hundreds and can show the ways that I've answered them, which is the point
of the directory. I also have a list of 200+ questions that people gave
me, question they wish to answer but haven't answered yet. And I could
sketch out how I would pursue such investigations. Related to such a
navigation, there could also be the people's deepest values, because I've
collected that from the same people, in fact from some 500+ people. So
that would be an interesting way to navigate the directory and perhaps
encourage a community to form around the directory and my research.

Some communities that I am engaging or will engage include:
* Math education.
* Catholic church.
* Lithuanian community.
* People from my lab, Minciu Sodas.
Jerry's group is my best link to entrepreneurs. I have a list of prospects:
http://www.selflearners.net/Business/Prospects
There's hurdles to getting the support of any group.

I've been at this for about 3 months, but I'm not too discouraged, partly
because of your kind attention, and partly because I know my work in Math
was very very good, I'm slowly getting supportive feedback and I'm on the
right track. For example, thanks to Ken Tyler, I learned about the
philosopher Badiou, which got me reviewing the axioms of Zermelo-Fraenkel
set theory, which I see now match up the "visualization structures" given
by 6 of the rooms, as well as 4 other rooms. Which is to say, I have a
tool for very quickly sorting out domains in a very deep way, and also,
relating disparate domains.

I'll write out how this methodology helps (me) think about Gamestorming
and Connected Company.

I'll end with my big picture of my life. In 2009, I finished my quest to
"know everything", as given by my 10 minute video summary:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArN-YbPlf8M The upshot was:
* I assumed as little as possible about God. But God's point of view was
key in putting it all together. So I don't have to be cold to God
anymore.
* How can I apply the knowledge usefully? By organizing a culture of
self-learners, of the skeptical, the "poor-in-spirit", who wish to take
many small but sensible leaps of faith, rather than one big one. A culture
of truth that makes all knowledge tangible. Jesus's vision of the kingdom
of heaven.
* Nobody cares about the questions I asked and the answers I found. But
they might care about the ways I and others figured things out. Such ways
define the culture. And if we can transform them into games, then such a
culture can be taken up widely.

Key to a culture is to find a way of sharing, of living as family, of
making a living, and so whether or not I go bankrupt, that will always be
relevant.

Dave, thank you for thinking with me! and for making such a culture real.
I very much do need thoughts as to what people want. I don't know what
people want.

I've figured out what I'd like to offer to those who crowdfund me. Thank
you to Pamela McLean, Ben de Vries and Perry Recker for helpful
conversations.

My project is: "Self-Portraits of Self-Learners".

* I'm sharing and documenting the hundreds of ways that I've figured
things out in my quest to know everything and in my life.
* I'm sharing and documenting thousands of ways that others have figured
things out in various domains such as math, science, business, law,
medicine, agriculture, government, faith, arts, music, theater and many
more.
* I'm describing a "House of Knowledge" of 24 "rooms" that presents all of
these ways and everything I know. http://www.selflearners.net/ways/
* I'm thereby creating a self-portait of myself as a self-learner. I'm
using diagrams, texts, anecdotes, audio, video, drawings, paintings,
music, all stored in a database and presented through an online interface.
* I'm working with others to portray them as self-learners. They could be
you, your spouse, mother, father, grandmother, elder, child or friend or
pastor, somebody who works for you, who you invest in, who you cherish or
would vote for, who mentors you, connects you or has made a difference in
your life.
* I'm assembling a panel of expert self-learners who provide insight
regarding their favorite domains.
* I'm nurturing a community of self-learners who want to learn the "House
of Knowledge" and its many ways of figuring things out.
* I'm fostering a culture of self-learners who share values, questions,
dreams and truths.

I offer the following rewards to those who contribute. You means "you" or
somebody you love!

* ($1) Vote on what I should research or clarify. Support others with
your votes. They can then use your votes towards the gifts below. You get
1 vote for every $1 you contribute!
* ($10) Give me a term or concept or anecdote or story. I will place it
for you within the "House of Knowledge". In this way, you can translate
back-and-forth between your terms, my terms and other terms.
* ($20) Download e-book versions of the "House of Knowledge".
* ($30) Include your profile in the "House of Knowledge", your answers to
four questions: What is your deepest value in life? What is a question
that you don't know the answer to, but wish to answer? What is your
dream-in-life? What is something that you know, and how did you figure it
out?
* ($40) Send a CD-ROM version of the "House of Knowledge" to anywhere in
the world.
* ($50) Given a page from a book or scripture, I will note ways of
figuring things out that help you understand the meaning.
* ($60) I will write a blog post for your blog as your special guest!
* ($80) Given a question in life, I will sketch out a practical
investigation for you to come up with a definite answer.
* ($100) I will coach you to use the "House of Knowledge" for your
investigations, both personally and in a group through Skype conference
calls, email groups, chats, Twitter.
* ($200) I will send you my oil pastel sketch of you as a superhero based
on your deepest value in life! See, for example:
http://www.gospelmath.com/Gospel/ValuesSuperHeroes
* ($300) Create a video Skype interview of your answers to my 12
questions. Here's an excerpt from my interview with Jerry Michalski:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhU8JJLwI8Q
* ($400) Lead a talk or workshop online or onsite (if you provide travel
and accommodations).
* ($500) Design a game with original artwork and coaching by Skype to help
you learn what you want to learn and then teach it!
* ($1,000) Work with you to express your dream-in-life, write it down, get
feedback from my panel of expert self-learners, research helpful contacts,
and visualize it with painting, music, video, poetry, drama and other
arts.
* ($2,000) Document and share your ways of figuring things out based on
your anecdotes, writings and video Skype interviews with you. We'll find
ways that match every one of the 24 rooms!
* ($3,000) Train you to document a domain with the "house of knowledge".
* ($5,000) Document 100+ methods in a domain such as law, medicine, art,
including an executive summary and diagram "cheat sheet".

All of the work above will be public, in the Public Domain,
copyright-free, for all to share freely.

I'm seeking $15,000. I envisage this as a one-year project. The money
will provide me with six months of income. Meanwhile, I can also do other
work and develop this further as a business.

I will invite church communities to do this with me as fundraisers. For
example, a church might raise $2,000 for me to visualize somebody's
dream-in-life, and then I would take $1,000 and the church would keep the
other $1,000.

My panel of expert self-learners will get, for free, the services above
that they desire. If I am able to make this work as a business, then I
envision that we'll refer each other to paid clients.

How do we like this?

Any thoughts? How might I improve this?

Who might like to be in my panel of expert learners!?

Pam, thank you for our conversation, which sparked the idea of me doing
your "philosophical portrait". As you see, we could find others who might
contribute to that, but it's most helpful that you might "sit" for me!
Thank you to Ben for thinking up the panel of expert self-learners. Thank
you to Perry for thinking up having me help understand passages and link
our own terms to the House of Knowledge. This is the kind of help that's
especially helpful!

Janet Feldman, Samwel Kongere,

Thank you for sharing my letter! Samwel, yes, I would like to include you
in my panel as an expert self-learner for "grass roots community". I
imagine this would mean, as your time and my time permits:
* You share your knowledge of how you've figured things out regarding
"grass roots community"
* I send you questions or interview you and help publish your ways of
figuring things out, your examples and stories
* I place your knowledge within my "House of Knowledge" so that it can be
understand within that framework and related to knowledge from other
people and in other domains
* I teach you about the "House of Knowledge" so that you can understand
it, we can communicate in terms of it, and you can apply it
* We provide feedback to each other to make sure that we understand each
other
* You share your knowledge freely and publicly with people who I direct to
you (who may be paying me)
* I recommend your services as a consultant and worker
* I provide you free coaching to use the "House of Knowledge" for your
investigations, both personally and in a group through Skype conference
calls, email groups, chats, Twitter.
* You help coach likewise other experts or people who may be paying me
* I provide you for free the services listed below and you do likewise
All of the above as your time and my time permits. Samwel, is that
attractive for you? to be on my panel of expert self-learners?

The idea is that focusing on the "ways of figuring things out" and how
I've fit them together into a "House of Knowledge" are a basis for a
"universal language" that helps us understand each other and all manner of
domains of knowledge.

We have a culture where, for free, we build this commons, especially for
each other's "portaits" and "domains", and as you can, you help me serve
others who may pay me, and as I or you or others are able, we find
customers for you to serve likewise. This knowledge base becomes an asset
for our own projects and also for making a living.

Janet, I welcome you to join my panel of expert self-learners, and I hope
you do, if such an arrangement might be attractive to you. I understand
that presently you have no time available. Yet thank you for forwarding
my letter!

P.S. http://www.kickstarter.com rejected my proposal below, and so I'm
looking for other crowdfunding websites.

Ok Andrius,
You think mathmatically and very knowledgeable. Think of my potrait as a
grass root community agent whether poor or wealthy. I mastered this from
Phillipians 4:10-12. I do support your vision/dream but my modem failed i
have to buy another and would communicate effectively.
I see a healther adventure!
Samwel.

----------------

* I'm thereby creating a self-portait of myself as a self-learner. I'm
using diagrams, texts, anecdotes, audio, video, drawings, paintings,
music, all stored in a database and presented through an online interface.

Pamela McLean and I spoke and chatted this week. She sparked the idea
that I do philosophical portraits. She agreed to be my first "alpha
customer".

Pamela, today I read through your post:
http://www.dadamac.net/blog/20110411/dont-share-idea-show-prototype
and I noted 26 ways of figuring things out (!) that you reference, see:
http://www.selflearners.net/ways/#1271
I will collect more and try to relate them to the rooms of the House of
Knowledge. Also, I can interview you by Skype as you talk about them and
other ways you think of. I'm especially curious what each way yielded for
you. For example, your way "don't share an idea - show a prototype" led
to your online workspace Dadamacadamy.

I also look forward to creating philosophical portraits for others who
might like to learn my House of Knowledge system and be part of my panel
of expert self learners, including Ben de Vries, Perry Recker and Samwel
Kongere.

Also, tomorrow I hope to set up at http://www.indiegogo.com my first
crowdfunding initiative, which is to do a philosophical portrait of Jesus.
I will seek $1,000 in one month's time. I hope that there might be
people who would like me to do that. I've started on it already here:
http://www.selflearners.net/ways/?d=Jesus

Thank you, Pamela! and also for telling me about http://www.flattr.com
which I think is a very sensible approach to micropayments and I've
included a button at my directory http://www.selflearners.net/ways/

Pamela, I appreciate very much your thoughts that "philosophical
portraits" might be "CVs" for the interdisciplinary people, the specialist
generalists like many of us who can understand specialists and help them
understand each other, as you say, cross culturally. Indeed, my goal with
the House of Knowledge is to facilitate such translations of mindsets
across domains and among people.

You are invited to join me for the next "First Thursday" meeting on on June 2nd - http://etherpad.openstewardship.net/VK1tei6Bws (details also in forwarded email below) . You may remember that we used to hold "First Thursday" in the worknets chatroom, but when it closed we could not find another place that was so easy for everyone to access.

For a while the only way I could find to run First Thursday meetings was by using Skype, and simply including people who had confirmed before hand that they wanted to attend.

Now we have a new approach using etherpads, thanks to Gerry Gleason of COTW , on whose server our etherpads are running.

You can go to the link where the etherpad is at various times:
  • Before the meeting - to see what is on the agenda, to add items to the agenda, to leave a greeting in the chat box
  • During the online meeting - to discuss the agenda with other people (and to chat with them informally before and afterwards)
  • At other times during the rest of the month - to read the archives, and leave a greeting in the chat box. You may even find someone else there at the same time and hold a mini First Thursday follow-up meeting with them.
I hope you will be able to join us at our new style First Thursdays - either this moth or at some time in the future. I hope the fact that we can go there at any time will make it easier for more people to be included, one way and another. I hope that, over time, people will get to feel very much "at home" at the First Thurday etherpad sessions. I hope people will gradually get a feeling of "belonging" and knowing each other. I hope it will become similar, in an online way, to the face-to-face situation of belonging to a good local community group or club.

Welcome to the "First Thursday Club"

Time - 13.00 GMT 14.00 Nigerian and London time, (16.00 E African time I think - can someone check and confirm?)

 Objective
In addition to the stated agenda it will be a session to continue introducing people to the use of "EtherPad" as a place to meet for First Thursdays

 Agenda Items

 Exploring overlapping interests
 - meet and greet

Items of current concern regarding agriculture
- Irrigation, drought, climate change

Professional development for teachers and others
Ken's Teachers Talking link up - and wider relevance regarding  ongoing professional development for teachers and others - and how dadamac.net profiles and ongoing support can help.

Suggested topics from Steve Bosserman for this or future agendas:
  • Business ecosystems development
  • We  have several small businesses starting and expanding in the  northeastern area of the U.S. that are taking advantage of the  technologies and know-how several readers may be interested in pursuing
  • We  are encouraging the development of those enterprises in advanced energy  and waste stream management because they contribute the most to the  vitality and sustainability of the natural and business ecosystems.
  • Water Management
  • We have water problems throughout the U.S. all along a continuum of too much to too little to too unpredictable.
  • Waste stream Management
  • Common solutions
  • I  see a common framework we can use from which solutions develop that  have meaning for people in specific areas. Definitely not one size fits  all.

Dear friend,

You may have received an email from me that stated I was in London and
needed help. This email was in fact from a person that temporarily
gained access to my email account and sent out these messages,
attempting to impersonate me.

Please know that I am not in trouble, and am in Michigan with my wife
waiting for our son to be born. And know that I would never solicit
you with requests for help like this, as I have family and friends
that I can contact if I were really in trouble.

I have resolved this compromise on my email the same day it happened, and have
fully regained control of my email and other resources. Thank you to
those people who tried to alert me to this problem.

Pamela,

I will try to join you for your Dadamac etherpad chat today, Thursday,
http://etherpad.openstewardship.net/October-First-Thursday
at 14.00 GMT 15.00 Nigerian and London time, 17.00 East Africa Time, New
York 10.00, Chicago 9.00 for approximately one hour

We all worked so wonderfully on the Pyramid of Peace
http://www.pyramidofpeace.net to avert genocide in Kenya in 2008. I'm now
surprised to be dedicating myself to something similar here in Chicago.

Today I went to Occupy Chicago for the fifth time. When I first went, I
was impressed that people there are truly caring that our system is flawed
overall, and not so concerned about particular issues. However, I noticed
that most people weren't getting included in a way that would make the
most of them. The online groups made that all the more clear, especially
because they generally don't have public archives. I brought this up with
some of the most active organizers and I realized that they were swamped.
They encouraged me to be as bold as I can be in organizing volunteers.

I'm therefore setting up http://www.occupyme.net I appreciate any help
we might provide in creating and staffing a responsive online space for
supporting volunteers, much as we did with Pyramid of Peace. I'm
starting tomorrow by setting up PmWiki. I'm focusing on Occupy Chicago
but certainly we can support sites across the US and the world.

Thank you!

Andrius

Andrius Kulikauskas, ms@..., (773) 306-3807

----------------------------

I'm taking initiative to help people get more involved in Occupy Chicago.

The more leadership we show, the more opportunity we open up for others to
be leaders, as well.

I spoke with Todd, with Sarah Wittford and with Mark Banks, and they all
agreed that any such initiative we show is much appreciated.

I've started to set up http://www.occupyme.net I invite help especially
from anybody who would like to help online as website builders, online
networkers and onsite liaisons. I'll be setting up a wiki.

Lots of people are coming with great ideas. I want to help us embrace and
support them. Some examples include:
* Zax and Serena brought up the Chicago Marathon
http://groups.google.com/group/occupychicago/browse_thread/thread/15f1157185349b\
d8
* Tieg and others are setting up a library
http://groups.google.com/group/OccupyChicagoEdu/browse_thread/thread/9c6f2151978\
a3450

It's important that the committee group correspondence be publicly
visible. This can be done without revealing people's emails. Public
archives allow people to link to our efforts and help others find them.
They create a culture of inclusion and quick integration of all our best
efforts.

I include below a letter of Sarah's that we take initiative!

-----------------------------------------------

I think we need to be careful about Bureaucracy. In the past two days
since this google group has started I've read a lot about what people want
to do and people afraid to step forward and do it. So I have a proposal.
If you want to make flyers and go in a neighborhood- do it. If you want
to go stand on an el and talk to the entire el full of people about the
movement, do it.

In my humble opinion, the only things that should go to general committee
are things that affect everyone, like spending the Occupy Chicago funds
for flyers or buying printers or having other organizations join in
solidarity with ours.

I also think we do need to work out some sort of worksheet of who we have
organized, but honestly, who cares. If ten different people call the same
group ten different times, then maybe they will realize we are serious and
join us.

Let's not get caught in bureaucracy and get some direct action going out
here. That's what I've been doing since Day 1. So don't get caught up in
the details or in the committees. Just go out there and outreach with
people, talk to people, flyer areas. In my opinion, you do not need
permission to do any of these things and if we, as a group decide that we
need permission to do this, then it will make our mission one thousand
times harder.

That is just my opinion.

Sincerely,

Sarah

P.S.- Remember we are a not a political group, we can not allow this to
be used for any political agendas and we need to be careful about other
organizations coming into our movement and trying to distort our message.

Subject: Minciu Sodas: Thanking and Forgiving
minciusodas
Send Email Send Email

Greetings from Chicago!

From 1998 to 2010, I organized "Minciu sodas" http://www.ms.lt as my
business for serving independent thinkers around the world. My hope was
to make a living from Lithuania. I've lived my life as an independent
thinker and I hoped to serve others, likewise.

As you know, I failed to make Minciu Sodas work as a viable business. I
also failed to pay back my loans. I had about $130,000 in debt, mostly
from credit cards, but also a business loan from a friend's father. Three
months ago, I declared bankruptcy, and recently, my bankruptcy was
discharged. I don't have to pay back those loans, but in the future, it
will be hard for me to borrow money, should I need to. I hope I don't!

I'm grateful that I was able to dedicate myself to establish Minciu Sodas
as a venue for the widest variety of independent thinkers. Looking back,
I'm glad that I can start anew. My goal now is to foster a culture of
learning, growing, living forever, here and now. I've gained very
relevant ideas from our work at Minciu Sodas. In particular, I value our
"12 questions", such as: What is your deepest value in life, which
includes all of your other values? and What is a question that you don't
know the answer to, but wish to answer? I appreciate the variety of our
answers: http://www.worknets.org/wiki.cgi?Values I think they help us
speak heart-to-heart and thus live a culture where we are one.

Thank you to more than 1,000 participants who contributed thoughtful
letters over the years. Today, as I look back, I want to thank also Janet
Feldman ("Holistic Helping"), Pamela McLean ("Learning From Each Other"),
Franz Nahrada ("Global Villages") and Zenonas and Audrone Anusauskas
("Veikti Vis Placiau") for embracing my efforts, hosting Minciu Sodas
activity and actively fostering a shared culture. I also thank all of us,
many hundreds, for being there for each other during our Pyramid of Peace
to avert genocide in Kenya in 2008 http://www.pyramidofpeace.net That was
marvelous.

Please forgive me for the many times I may have hurt you over the years.
Thank you for the slack you've shown me. Likewise, please know that I
feel blessed by each and every one of us who participated. We all
contributed genuinely of ourselves.

My very large debts were forgiven. Likewise, I forgive any and all of our
debts to Minciu Sodas. In particular, I forgive:
* Tomas Cepaitis, who failed to deliver $170 to my bank account in
Lithuania, as I requested.
* Peter Ongele, who did not repay me a loan of $100 that he requested for
his schooling.
* Tom Ochuka, who did not repay me a loan of $75 for the water cart he
proposed.
* Samwel Kongere, who misappropriated $570 of money that I had wired for
him to hold for me.
We failed each other. Such failures ended my interest in having money
relationships with the above individuals. This is unfortunate because
they all had made notable contributions to Minciu Sodas, and our ability
to work with money is important for us to function in our world. I hope
that our feelings for each other can start fresh. Looking back, I think
that making loans to people or having them hold money for me did not work
well in Minciu Sodas. Whereas paid work and donations made for dozens of
successful projects.

I'm glad to look at life with new eyes. I'm glad for God's providence as
we came together, as we brought Minciu Sodas to life, as we touched and
moved each other, as we continue further in our various ways. I'm glad
that I could go bankrupt so unambiguously.

My best wishes for our best efforts in all we do!

Thank you,

Andrius

Hi all,

We're promoting a small Tweeting initiative in commemoration of World AIDS Day 2011 (December 1) over at Rising Voices.

Please participate by tweeting how World AIDS Day is being observed in your country, what are some of the ongoing challenges with HIV/AIDS in your country, or how you think citizen media can help to raise awareness and education about this disease.

Please use the hashtags #BlogPos (blogging positively - the name of our working group) and #WAD2011.

We'd love your contribution to help provide a look at World AIDS Day around the world.

Thanks,

Eddie

Oh dear friends, family and loved ones of Elunud,

This is so shocking and sad, akin to losing our beloved Maria Agnese last year at this time. I know we all join in expressing our deepest sorrow and condolences to the family, and to mourning the loss of a great peace leader for our struggling planet.

Thanks so much for your stirring words, Andrius...if you ever doubt the impact of Minciu Sodas and of yourself personally, hopefully this tribute from her daughter, Sarah, will put those feelings to rest.

With great sadness and lovingkindness, but also great joy at having such a marvelous spirit among us for a time, whose legacy will live forever!  Janet

It is with great sadness I announce to you that the founder of this group, Eluned Hurn, passed away on a visit to Sri Lanka in January. She was cremated in Sri Lanka and a memorial service held at her home village in Wales.

The following words appear at the end of the eulogy by her daughter Sarah, a fitting tribute:

I will end with a quote from Andrius Kulikauskas of a peace group she supported called ‘fighting peacefully’. These words from a stranger to me which appropriately enough I found on the internet sum up what she meant to people and the impact that she had.
Eluned, Thank you for your leadership and your deepest value of
"fighting peacefully" which you have pursued all of your life. I was
so delighted to learn your deepest value, I thought, Now we will have an
army! and a Warrior Queen! And your heart has given us a chamber to
nurture our love for our enemy. As I understand you, we have many
reasons to fight, but we must do it peacefully.
