I little bit of older news about Bryan Smith's death:
BANGOR - The motorist who gained notoriety when he struck Stephen
King with his van died of an accidental overdose of a painkiller,
according to the state medical examiner's office.
Bryan Smith, 43, of Fryeburg, died from an overdose of fentanyl,
according to toxicology reports. He was found dead in his home on
Sept. 22, three days after he was last seen by family members.
Smith, who suffered from a back injury, had been prescribed the
opiate-based painkiller not long before his death.
The Bangor Daily News previously reported that seven prescriptions,
five separate medications and two doses of another drug were found in
Smith's trailer.
There were two separate prescriptions for fentanyl, a painkiller sold
under the trade name Duragesic, which is used for severe, long-term
pain, the newspaper said. It is administered through a patch over a
three-day period.
Fentanyl can cause the user's breathing to slow to the point of death
if too much is taken.
Smith's garnered unwanted attention following the June 1999 accident
in North Lovell. Smith was trying to control his Rottweiler in the
back seat, drove off Route 5 and struck King, nearly killing him.
Smith's family and friends said he suffered from incessant back pain
from a construction accident, along with bouts of depression. He was
also worried that he would end up in a wheelchair.
His brother, Everett Smith, questioned whether an interaction between
fentanyl and other medications could have caused Smith's death, but
the report ruled out that possibility.
Although the toxicology report ended the mystery over how Smith died,
it did not resolve the question of when he actually died. No official
date of death has been established.
Fans of King speculated on the Internet that Smith may have died on
the author's 53rd birthday, Sept. 21.
King added to the discussion when he said in a national television
interview that he believed that was true. He also noted other
coincidences, including that they shared the same middle name, Edwin.
