Sorry for the number of emails this month, but I only just received
an important email. As most of you would be aware, Frank Muller was
seriously injured late last year, and the injuries were thought to
have been so severe that he may no longer be able to continue reading
audio books for a living.
Well Frank appears to be healing better than expected, and he has
spoken his first words only a few days ago after getting his jaw,
broken in the accident, unwired.

Hello Everyone.
There is a great story on King and Rose Red on the TV Guide site. You
can find it here at the link below.

I occasionally go and have a look at eBay for King books, but it
appears as though Brian Freeman from http://www.brianfreeman.com/
beat me to this interesting little find:
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?
MfcISAPICommand=ViewItem&item=1504081661
As Brian puts it, "You'll note that King apparently forgot
not only how he SIGNS his name, but how he SPELLS it, too."

The band that has written 2 King related songs, NOW-is-NOW has just
finished 30 days in the recording studio completing their next album.
The final mixing is scheduled for March, and mastering for later that
month, so keep an eye out for their album in April or May... There
will be a few songs placed on their site, so keep an ear out for
them :-)

I'm working on some updated to the page to move a lot of the short
stories into the new page for Everything's Eventual. The updates
should be online in a few hours.
http://www.horrorking.com/eventual.html
---
I have been pretty quiet in updating the site lately as I have been
preparing to do a few jobs around the house, culminating in cladding
the house. This is now complete except for a little painting, so I
should have more time to spend on King :-)
All I need now is a new HDD for my PC, as my trusty old 3 year old
10GB drive that was used for websites, King material of all types,
and a general backup drive, looks like it has finally passed into the
great electronic afterworld. I think I'll have to get one of those
nice little 60 or 80GB drives when I see them at a good price, so if
you have any thoughts on the best brand, please let me know.
Thanks again for reading these little ramblings of mine.

American novelist Stephen King has hired a North Vancouver furniture
designer to make a writing desk for his Florida home.
The desk, which cost $40,000 Cdn., is the most prestigious sale yet
for Peter Pierobon, who has been showing his work at art galleries in
the U.S.
The desk is made from sapele, a reddish-brown mahogany-like wood from
Africa. It has two secret drawers and a mysterious line of raised
script on its black leather surface.
King, who is famous for his thrillers and horror stories, wanted the
phrase "All Things Serve the Beam," written in Gregg shorthand on the
desk top.
"I have no idea what that means," says Pierobon, who often uses
language-based decoration in his work as a way to communicate with
whoever uses the piece. "I have never spoken directly to Stephen
King. This has all been done through various middlemen on the
Internet."
King commissioned the piece after viewing Pierobon's designs at
www.johnelder.com, the Web site for the John Elder Gallery in New
York.

The following list is the order of stories in Everything's Eventual,
which is due VERY shortly!
Autopsy Room 4 (Six Stories)
The Man in the Black Suit (Six Stories)
All That You Love Will Be Carried Away
The Death of Jack Hamilton
In The Deathroom
The Little Sisters of Eluria
Everything's Eventual
L.T.'s Theory Of Pets (Six Stories)
The Road Virus Heads North
Lunch at the Gotham Cafe (Six Stories)
That Feeling, You Can Only Say What It Is In French
1408
Riding The Bullet
Luckey Quarter (Six Stories)
Bev Vincent reported the following about King's selection of the
order of the stories in the book:
King said: "What I did was take all the spades out of a deck of cards
plus a joker. Ace to King = 1-13. Joker = 14. I shuffled the cards
and dealt them. The order in which they came out became the order of
the stories, based on their position in the list my publisher sent
me. And it actually created a very nice balance between the literary
stories and the all-out screamers. Next collection: selected by
Tarot."

Hello Everyone
Just a few new things this time.

signing, and said that it may be in about 5 years. Let's all cross
our fingers!

Hodder & Stoughton and his US publisher Scribner that King's 4th

the collection is Everything's Eventual, just like King's short story
from 1997 that was then published in Fantasy & Science Fiction. All
the titles of the stories that the collection will contain haven't
been revealed yet. What has been revealed so far is that it will
contain the story LT's Theory of Pets and some fifteen other stories
unpublished, or previously only published in private collections or
magazines. The collection will be well over 500 pages long."

The November 26¡¦th issue of Total Movie Magazine will contain a nice
bonus for subscribers ¡V a copy of Jay Holben¡¦s short film Paranoid on
DVD¡K If only I was in the USA & subscribed to the magazine ƒ¼

From a Buick 8 has been delayed from March until September 2002, but
do not be too disappointed, as there is going to be another book

pages long.
This was the book that was rumoured to be One Headlight.

As many of you will now be aware, the United States of America has
just seen one of the largest single terrorist attacks ever, starting
at 8:45am on September 11, 2001.
Four hijacked American and United Airlines planes have crashed, two
into the World Trade Center's two towers just 18 minutes apart, one
into the Pentagon an hour later, and one apparently missing its
intended target and crashing in Pennsylvania, southeast of
Pittsburgh. Over 260 passengers and crew were killed on the 4
aircraft, and an untold number have been killed and injured
on the ground.
The World Trade Center's two 110-story towers, which have 40,000 to
50,000 staff, have been completely destroyed, as well as the nearby
Building 7. Reports also say the Marriott Hotel near the World Trade
Center is on the verge of collapse.
New York City reports at least 78 police officers missing, 200
firefighters presumed dead, although this number will surely be
updated in the next few hours.
My family and I would like to send our condolences to everyone
affected directly and indirectly by this deplorable incident, and let
you all know that we are thinking of you in your hour of need. I know
a few of you live in and around the New York area, and at least one
works at the World Trade Center. If you get the time, I would
appreciate a quick note letting us know you are all OK.

Hello everyone
Only a week to go until Black House is here with us!
There has been a "Black House Official Online Team" created in Yahoo,
and their main objective is to spread the word about the release of
Black House and this team online.
They have contests and real giveaways that focus around spreading the
word about the release of 'Black House', and all you have to do is
join the Yahoo team (Which is, of course, free). They expect 1 to 2
emails a week from the team, so you will not be swamped by emails if
you join.

The US paperback edition of Dreamcatcher has a release date of the
27th of November 2001. This was initially rumoured to contain an
excerpt of From a Buick 8, but this will not be the case.
---
Scribner's Spring 2002 catalog gives this longer description for From
a Buick 8:
Ever since 1979, the state police of Troop D in rural western
Pennsylvania have kept a vintage Buick Roadmaster-or what looks
almost just like one-caged in Shed B out back of the barracks. That's
when Troopers Ennis Rafferty and Curtis Wilcox answered a call about
its driver gone missing from a gas station just down the road. Wilcox
knew old cars, and he knew this one was suspect. When Rafferty
vanished a few hours later, Wilcox and his fellow troopers knew it
was worse than dangerous-and that it would be better if John Q.
Public never found out about it. Mostly the car sleeps (that's one
way of putting it, anyway), but even as it sleeps it breathes-
inhaling a little bit of this world, exhaling a little bit of
whatever world it came from.
In the fall of 2001, Wilcox's eighteen-year-old boy Ned starts coming
by the barracks, mowing the lawn, washing windows, shoveling snow.
Sergeant Commanding Sandy Dearborn knows it's the boy's way of
holding on to his father, killed in the line of duty in a gruesome
auto accident. Missing his father, Ned is allowed to become part of
the Troop D family, and one day he looks through a window of Shed B
and discovers the family secret. Just like his father, he wants
answers. And the secret begins to stir.

BRIDGTON — Stephen King's appreciation for the care he received at

Christina Starobin is a poet, author and assistant adjunct professor
at Ulster County Community College in Stone Ridge, N.Y claimed that
Stephen King stole some ideas from her novel Blood Eternal and added
them to Desperation. Well here is an article from the New York Law
Journal April 25, 2001.
A federal judge in New York has dismissed with disdain a complaint by
a writer and adjunct literature professor who claimed that prince of
horror Stephen King stole her work.
U.S. District Judge David N. Hurd of the U.S. District Court for the
Northern District of New York shot down Christina Starobin of
Saugerties, N.Y., for engaging in a "recurring and vitriolic attack
upon the character and abilities of King."
Starobin v. King and Penguin Putnam Inc., 00-CV-0185, stems from a
complaint brought by Starobin, a poet, author and assistant adjunct
professor at Ulster County Community College in Stone Ridge, N.Y.
Starobin had written a novel, "Blood Eternal," about vampires who run
a car service in suburban New Jersey. The copyrighted novel was
submitted to Penguin and then returned to Starobin on Sept. 20, 1996.
Two days earlier, King copyrighted his novel, "Desperation," which
was published by Penguin.
The complaint alleged that King, whose 40-plus books have sold
millions of copies, is essentially devoid of literary talent, could
not have written "Desperation" on his own and pilfered from the work
of Starobin during the three months her manuscript was in the
possession of Penguin. About the only similarity Judge Hurd found
between the two novels was that, in his opinion, neither was very
good.
"There are no common characters, locations or occurrences shared by
her novel and King's," Hurd wrote. "There are no common references to
popular culture, historical events or common sequences of
events ... . When the two works at issue are viewed as a whole, it is
utterly beyond dispute that no reasonable person could regard them as
similar, much less substantially so."
The judge added that he was not all that impressed with King's
literary abilities either. Hurd said he had never before read a
Stephen King novel, and was not exactly enthralled by the horror
writer's tale of an evil spirit that emanates from a mine in the
Nevada desert and possesses passers-by, transforming them into
homicidal maniacs.
"Quite frankly, neither work was a particularly good read," Hurd said,
referring to "Desperation" and "Blood Eternal," both of which he said
were read cover-to-cover.
Regardless, "Desperation" spent some 15 weeks on The New York Times
best-seller list in hard cover and was highly successful as a
paperback.
LITERARY CREDENTIALS
Starobin repeatedly contended that her literary credentials are
superior to King's, and that assertion alone established an issue of
fact as to whether King is capable of writing "Desperation."
She attempted to bolster that point with this statement from her
plaintiff's memorandum:
"Although plaintiff's having graduated Harvard cum laude, gone on to a
Masters in English and Comparative Literature at Colubmia [sic] and a
PhD in English at New York University does not mean intelligence
[sic], it does mean a long number of hours reading books other than
Grisham and other best sellers and exposure to philosphy [sic], plot
and symbolism in heavy enough doses to become queasy with the
superficiality espoused by [defendant] King."
Judge Hurd, however, termed Starobin's conduct "reprehensible,"
considered her character attacks on King unseemly and found
it "disheartening that a person of plaintiff's education and self-
professed abilities would resort to such attacks, particularly in
light of the obviously baseless nature of her claims."
Starobin argued pro se. Peter A. Herbert, of Lankler Siffert & Wohl in
Manhattan, appeared as co-counsel for King. Also representing the
defendants, including the publisher, were Gerald E. Singleton, Maura
J. Wogan and Yuki A. Hirose, of Frankfurt, Garbus, Kurnit, Klein &
Selz in Manhattan.
---
Production of the new miniseries "Firestarter: The Next Chapter"
began on April 17 and is due to be aired in December 2001. It stars
Marguerite Moreau, Malcolm McDowell, Danny Nucci and Dennis Hopper.

themselves.

http://www.horrorking.com
Hi again everyone, and welcome to the new members. Please feel free
to forward this, and any other Horrorking.Com newsletter, to other
King fans and interested people, provided it is not altered in any
way.
Over the last few weeks or so I have been very busy doing an update
that people have been asking for - an online book & movie store.
Where I used to have the links to each of the books from Amazon.Com,
and Amazon.co.Uk on the respective pages, there are now simply links
to a "bookstore" for each of these suppliers.
I thought this would make it easier for people to track down books
and movies that they dont have, and also see what is available, all
on one selection of 6 pages.
The pages have just been updated, so to see the new-look bookstore,
have a look at http://www.horrorking.com/amazonshop/store1.html and
http://www.horrorking.com/amazonukshop/store1.html for the Amazon.Com
& Amazon.Co.Uk stores.
At the moment I hope that all the Amazon.Com links have been added,
and about 90% of the Amazon.Co.Uk links.
I am also in the process of adding new links for Barnes & Noble, so
people have a wider selection of ordering options. This should be
complete in the next few days, and online by the end of the week.
If any of you find ANY problems with the pages, or have ideas on how
to make it better, please let me know. I still have headings on the
pages to complete, and a few links to add, but the pages are
basically complete.
Thanks for visiting Horrorking.Com

Lilja's Library - The World of Stephen King: http://come.to/liljas-

Finally it's here! We have all been waiting for it to be released;
the US cover for Black House is finally out! Personally I like it but
don't take my word for it. Check it out in "The News Section".
There is a lot of Black House news today. As if it wasn't enough that
the cover is now out Random House told me that they will start
releasing excerpts from Black House on their site in about three
weeks. They also confirmed that the new paperback edition of The
Talisman would contain a chapter of Black House
Not bad right?
In other news. I have also added another article about King buying a

Hi everyone,
Stephen King has just purchased a home at 1600 N. Casey Key Road in
Palmer's Northerly Subdivision of Park of Casey Key. King paid a
reported $8.9 million for the property.
You can read the full report at the link below (You may have to cut

From King's website: No decision has been made yet about a winner of
the writing exercise outlined in On Writing. We are still going
through all of the entries and do not expect to pick a winner until
this Fall.

Also from King's Website: Although a film titled Insomnia starring Al
Pacino is currently in production, it is not based on Stephen's book
of the same name.

Some of you will have noticed that the links to Riding the bullet &
other 'online' books have been removed. This is because Softlook has
ceased its online commerce operations.
I'm not that happy this has mainly because I'm still owed quite a few
$ from them, so if anyone has ideas for other King related material
to fill in the spaces left, then please email me.

Mick Garris has commented on the upcoming 'The Talisman' mini-
series: "Yes, TALISMAN is real. The deal was just made. It's with
DreamWorks, Kennedy-Marshall, and ABC. Don't know when, since the
strikes might happen, but I'm about to begin the script, working from
the feature draft by Richard LaGravenese. No cast yet."
Sounds interesting...

That's in for this newsletter. Dont forget to let me know if you hear

Hi Everyone.
I have done a few updates to Horrorking.Com in the last few days.
Firstly a bit of information on the movie adaptation of Patrick
McGrath's Asylum, which will be done by King.
I am yet to read the novel, it is set in an English insane asylum,
where the superintendent's wife falls in love with one of the
patients, a murderer.

The next Dark Tower book The Dark Tower V: The Crawling Shadow,
should now have been started already. Steve expected to start work on
this early in 2001, so fingers crossed for an early to mid 2002
release. It was initially stated that the DT series that are left to
write, DT5, 6 and 7, will be released all at once. I personally doubt
they will, and we may see them released a few months apart.

that will be released in about 2003. This will be the third book of

Black House, The Talisman 2, is due to be completed by the end of
March, and is scheduled for a September 2001 release. The book will
be a sequel, but not a continuation of the original, as Jack Sawyer
is now thirty-one years old, retired, and living in a farmhouse in
western Wisconsin.

Stephen King has also decided to try something new - He has adapted
yet another story for the screen. Not a new thing you say? Well this
time it's a story from another author! Stephen King has adapted
Patrick McGrath's novel "Asylum" for Paramount Pictures.
It's an interesting story that has the wife of an English insane
asylum's superintendent falling in love with one of the patients, a
murderer.

Thanks for Desiree Coulter for the following:
Sylvester Stallone looks set to play the bad guy opposite Kevin Bacon
in an adaptation of the Stephen King short story "Dolan's Cadillac,"
the Popcorn.com movie news website reports.
The story concerns a woman who witnesses a mob murder and is in turn
murdered to protect a crime boss, to be played by Stallone. Bacon is
in talks to play the dead woman's husband, who seeks revenge from the
mob kingpin.
Bacon enjoyed a recent box-office breakthrough of sorts with "Hollow
Man," although Stallone has suffered a series of career setbacks,
most recently a poorly performing remake of "Get Carter."

While stumbling around Stephen King's site yet again, I noticed that
they have placed the income and expense report on The Plant online!
King made a modest profit of $463,832.27 so far from The Plant, which
is quite good from a story that is not yet finished. Let's hope that
when he completes the story in a few years that he also decides to
place them on the website as well.

Stephen King's Paranoid has been made into a movie, but the new news
is that the film has been completed. The delay in the release of the
film has been caused by 2 pieces of music used in the initial film's
version being used before permission was completed. The cost of one
of the pieces was 15 times the completed film's budget, and the other
was 25 times the completed film's budget!
The website, only a little over 2 months old now, has some
interesting new news:
February 9, 2001
At our two month anniversary online, the official website for Stephen
King's Paranoid has logged over 3500 hits from 45 different countries
around the world and more than 1100 downloads of the trailer. Thanks
to everyone who has written in with wonderful comments, and thanks

Well now what we all are over Christmas, here are a couple of
Christmas Jokes for you all. Back to work on Horrorking.Com
tomorrow... :-)
---
'Twas the week after Christmas, and all through the house
Nothing would fit me, not even a blouse.
The cookies I'd nibbled, the eggnog I'd taste
At the holiday parties had gone to my waist.
When I got on the scales there arose such a number!
When I walked to the store (less a walk than a lumber).
I'd remember the marvelous meals I'd prepared;
The gravies and sauces and beef nicely rared,
The wine and the rum balls, the bread and the cheese
And the way I'd never said, "No thank you, please."
As I dressed myself in my husband's old shirt
And prepared once again to do battle with dirt---
I said to myself, as I only can
"You can't spend a winter disguised as a man!"
So--away with the last of the sour cream dip,
Get rid of the fruit cake, every cracker and chip
Every last bit of food that I like must be banished
"Till all the additional ounces have vanished.
I won't have a cookie--not even a lick.
I'll want only to chew on a long celery stick.
I won't have hot biscuits, or corn bread, or pie,
I'll munch on a carrot and quietly cry.
I'm hungry, I'm lonesome, and life is a bore---
But isn't that what January is for?
Unable to giggle, no longer a riot.
Happy New Year to all and to all a good diet!
----
'Twas the Night After Christmas"
By Jeff Foxworthy
'Twas the night after Christmas and all through the trailer,
the beer had gone flat and the pizza was staler.
The tube socks hung empty, no candies or toys,
and I was camped out on my old Lay-Z-Boy.
The kids they weren't talking to me or my wife,
the worst Christmas they said they had had in their lives.
My wife couldn't argue and neither could I,
so I watched TV and my wife, she just cried.
When out in the yard the dog started barkin',
I stood up and looked and I saw Sheriff Larkin.
He yelled, "Roy I am sworn to uphold the laws
and I got a complaint here from a feller named Claus."
I said, "Claus, I don't know nobody named Claus,
and you ain't taking me in without probable cause."
Then the Sheriff he said, "The man was shot at last night."
I said, "That might have been me, just what's he look like?"
The Sheriff replied, "He's a jolly old feller, with a big
beer gut belly,
that shakes when he laughs like a bowl full of jelly.
He sports a long beard, and a nose like a cherry."
I said, "Sheriff that sounds like my wife's sister Sherri."
"It's no time for jokes Roy" the Sheriff he said.
"The man I'm describing is dressed all in red.
I'm here for the truth now, it's time to come clean.
Tell me what you've done, tell me what you've seen."
Well I started to lie then I thought what the hell,
it wouldn't have been the first time that I've spent
New Years in jail.
I said, "Sheriff it happened last night about ten,
and I thought that my wife had been drinking again."
When she walked in from work she was as white as a ghost.
I thought maybe she had seen one of them UFO's.
But she said that a bunch of deer had just flown over her head,
and stopped on the roof of our good neighbour Red.
Well I ran outside to look and the sight made me shudder,
a freezer full of venison standing right on Red's gutter.
Well my hands were a shakin' as I grabbed my gun,
when outta Red's chimney this feller did run.
And slung on his back was this bag over flowin'.
I thought he'd stolen Red's stuff while old Red was
out bowling'.
So I yelled, "Drop fat boy, hands in the air!"
But he went about his business like he hadn't a care.
So I popped a warning shot over his head.
Well he dropped that bag and he jumped in that sled.
And as he flew off I heard him extort,
"That's assault with intent Roy, I'll see ya in court."

I little bit of older news about Bryan Smith's death:
BANGOR - The motorist who gained notoriety when he struck Stephen
King with his van died of an accidental overdose of a painkiller,
according to the state medical examiner's office.
Bryan Smith, 43, of Fryeburg, died from an overdose of fentanyl,
according to toxicology reports. He was found dead in his home on
Sept. 22, three days after he was last seen by family members.
Smith, who suffered from a back injury, had been prescribed the
opiate-based painkiller not long before his death.
The Bangor Daily News previously reported that seven prescriptions,
five separate medications and two doses of another drug were found in
Smith's trailer.
There were two separate prescriptions for fentanyl, a painkiller sold
under the trade name Duragesic, which is used for severe, long-term
pain, the newspaper said. It is administered through a patch over a
three-day period.
Fentanyl can cause the user's breathing to slow to the point of death
if too much is taken.
Smith's garnered unwanted attention following the June 1999 accident
in North Lovell. Smith was trying to control his Rottweiler in the
back seat, drove off Route 5 and struck King, nearly killing him.
Smith's family and friends said he suffered from incessant back pain
from a construction accident, along with bouts of depression. He was
also worried that he would end up in a wheelchair.
His brother, Everett Smith, questioned whether an interaction between
fentanyl and other medications could have caused Smith's death, but
the report ruled out that possibility.
Although the toxicology report ended the mystery over how Smith died,
it did not resolve the question of when he actually died. No official
date of death has been established.
Fans of King speculated on the Internet that Smith may have died on
the author's 53rd birthday, Sept. 21.
King added to the discussion when he said in a national television
interview that he believed that was true. He also noted other
coincidences, including that they shared the same middle name, Edwin.

Hi Everyone,
Welcome to all the new members that have joined lately.
Well Stephen King has been happy with the support for The Plant so
far, and part 4 is now online at the address below. At almost 18,000
words, this is twice the length of previous versions, and also cocst
a bit more. This, and any future parts will cost $2, but King will
limit the book cost to $13 in total.
One interesting thing is that you can now download "Bundles" than
contain more than one version of the story - I chose one that
contains the Adobe acrobat, html and plain text versions of the
story, but there are other versions as well. To quote Stephen
King: "For those of you who haven't been paying, you know who you
are -- the blind newsboy is watching."

Thanks to Mitch Alden for pointing out this story about his band.
Horrorking.Com is proud to be one of the many King sites that have
been helping NOW is NOW with advertising for their excellent
song "Other Worlds", based on a small part of The Dark Tower seried
by Stephen King.
STEPHEN KING To Meet Modern Rock On The Steps Of His Own Radio Station
Mitch Alden, founder and songwriter of the Modern Rock band "NOW is
NOW," takes with him the support of thousands of Stephen King fans as
he heads north to King's hometown of Bangor, ME to perform live on
the airwaves of King's personally owned radio station, WKIT, 100.3
FM. This radio broadcast on November 9th will feature the cult
single "Other Worlds," a song inspired by Stephen King's bestselling
fantasy novel, The Gunslinger.
Like Stephen King, Mitch Alden has been using new and innovation
methods to get his work out to new listeners and his long time fans
alike.
"I've taken a different approach to getting my music to the masses,"
says Mitch Alden, whose unique songwriting style places the listener
inside the minds of their favorite book¹s characters. "Because
today¹s record companies are more like banks who spoon-feed their
opinions to the public, I elected to bypass them and use the more
direct approach to spread my music: the Internet."
During the three months 'Other Worlds' has been online, thousands of
Stephen King fans from around the world have downloaded the song for
free at "NOW is NOW's" MP3 site. After listening to to the song,
many have followed through by purchasing the CD at "NOW is NOW's"
website, using Mitch's "faith in people" approach of allowing the
listener to hear the CD before paying.
"I've been spreading the message of my music at the many unofficial
Stephen King websites and have managed to develop quite a large buzz
with his fans; most of them are now assisting me in spreading my
music even further. Like Stephen King, I realize how corporate
conglomerates take away so much from the artist. My vision is to
utilize the Internet to keep the corporations out of the picture and
keep the relationship with the listener intimate."
Mitch and his music have received extensive positive reviews from
other artists, disc jockeys, and listeners from around the world. He
has been nominated for a Boston Music Award, has contributed music to
several movie and TV soundtracks, and has appeared on radio stations
around the country.
Listeners interested a free taste of what "NOW is NOW" offers
musically can visit the band's MP3 website at http://www.mp3.com/NOW-

selling their debut CD, fans can find details at http://www.NOW-is-

"Mick Garris was asked if the movie (Desperation) was being cut and
if it was being toned down from the novel due to the interest in

anything out of it and keep it brutal and hard hitting." (original

AOL Chat 10/10/2000
Host: We welcome thousands of people to AOL Live, but Stephen...
it's especially nice to have you back and well and TYPING. Ready to
tell us the secrets of writing?
SKing: It's good to be doing those things. And yes, I'm ready to
tell you all my dirty little secrets.
Host: Let's shock some people right off.... You say, in ON
WRITING, that the most valuable "class" you had was 10 minutes with
John Gould, a high school teacher. How so?
SKing: I wrote a sports piece. Basically, what he did was take out
all the flowery language. He cut it to the bone. Basic information,
in other words. And that's where you start. Next.
Host: You go a little further. For example, you HATE adverbs. Why?
SKing: Adverbs always communicate one idea to me, and that's that the
writer isn't sure he's getting it across. And a lot of times, they're
redundant. If I say, "Jessie slammed the door loudly...well, duh. A
slammed door usually is loud. Again, writing is about communicating
what you see and hear and feel, doing it as simply as possible, and
ALWAYS TELLING THE TRUTH. Okay?
Host: Okay! One more from me, and then our members will have at
you..... "That's so cool." Why do you hate that?
SKing: I like slang, but I don't like phrases that are shortcuts.
Don't tell me "That's so cool," tell me how you feel. Tell me what
blisses you out.
Host: Ok, here's one from Chiliwidle: "It stands to reason you are
my favorite author, mainly because you breathe life into your
characters andyour stories are hypnotizing. Who is your favorite
author and why?"
SKing: I like a lot of different writers, and I've listed a bunch of
them at the end of ON WRITING. For sheer dependability, I think you
can't go wrong with Elmore Leonard or Ed McBain. Another very
dependable writer is Nora Roberts. She writes a lot, and the girl is
GOOD. Next?
Host: Stephen, EVERYONE is asking this, so let's take care of it up
front. Krishna asks: "I just want to know how are you feeling now
after your accident?"
SKing: I feel pretty well, for someone who was basically crushed on
a line down the right side of my body. I've still got a lot of pain
in my right hip, but I walk pretty well. Limp noticably at the end of
the day, though. As the late Walter Brennan used to say, "I've got a
hitch in my gitalong." I'm glad to be as well as I am. I got lucky.
Next?
Host: Good to hear. Here's one from Saralbe: "Do you plan how
your books are going to end, before you start them?"
SKing: I usually have an idea of where I'm going, but I like to
leave all the possibilities open. If the characters are doing their
job, they start to drive the story. Then it might end up anywhere.
The best thing is that if I don't know just what's going to happen,
then the readers usually don't, either. Next Q?
Host: From Jim Ballingall: "What advice do you have for "up and
coming" writers?"
SKing: Write a lot and read a lot. Try not to get discouraged. Next
Question?
Host: from Bellassz: "When you first started writing how did you
go about getting your work published? Was it difficult?"
SKing: I think that getting published is always difficult, and that
luck plays a part. You have to send the RIGHT story to the RIGHT
place...and at the RIGHT time. The best advice I can give is to keep
those stories working. Make a list of possible markets and keep
sending them around. Don't start at PLAYBOY and the ATLANTIC
MONTHLY, either. Read the little magazines. DON'T send to magazines
you haven't read. It's like shooting in the dark. You're apt to plug
your mother-in-law. Next Q?
Host: From Higley: "I just finished "On Writing." It was
excellent, but you never really discussed point of view. It's one
area that often confuses me in writing fiction. How many POV's
can/should one use when writing?"
SKing: You can use one point of view or many. I think it's best to
use either the first person ("I sat down") or the third person
restricted. ("He sat down.") There are lots of others, including
third person omneiscient, but do you really want to play God when
you're first starting out? Next Q? Next?
Host: Boy, I hope you all are taking notes out there because
there's going to be a quiz and I don't think Mr. King grades on a
curve.
SKing: Jesse is kicking butt and taking down names.
Host: From ARobin: "In what way do you select/devise a story line
for a book?"
SKing: I usually start with a situation, and just see where it
leads. It's like pulling a thread out of a mousehole. Sometimes
there's a treasure at the end, sometimes just a ball of dust. The fun
is getting there. In MISERY, I started with a basic situation of a
man stuck in a bed, held prisoner by a psychotic fan. That was all I
had. The story built itself, day by day. Then, during the rewriting
process, I just kinda whacked off the rough edges. Next Q?
Host: Speaking of school, you deliberately use lots of -- uh ---
cuss words so there is NO DANGER this will be used in high school
English classes. Why?
SKing: Yes, there are a fair number of Anglo-Saxonisms in the book. I
wanted to make it tough, in a way, for teachers to use it. I think
the most valuable things writers learn about their craft are learned
OUTSIDE the classroom. Not that you can't learn. If I thought that,
writing a book like this would've been a waste of time. Next?
Host: Lots of members want to know: Will there be more of "The
Plant?"
SKing: Yes, there will be more "Plant." The pay-through rate is
standing just above 75 per cent, which was my cut-off line. The
response has been strong. I may not finish the whole thing on line,
but I think we're a go for at least October and November. And the
next parts are really long. The November episode will probably cost
two bucks. Next Q?
Host: A little birdie tweeted "miniseries." You have one in the
works?
SKing: It's called ROSE RED. It's shooting right now.
Host: "On Writing" also has large sections of autobiography....
Does this mean you'll never write one?
SKing: I can't imagine writing a full-scale autobiography! Too much
of it would be, "Steve sat in a chair, bangin' on the keyboard."
Next ?
Host: Two more and you pass the AOL Live writing course....
SKing: Whew!
Host: From Nazelhair: "When is the next installment of the Dark
Tower series coming out?"
SKing: I need to start working on the next volume, tentatively
called "The Crawling Shadow," in January or February. I'm a little
scared to go back in, because I don't want to screw up. Next ?
Host: And finally, you know as much about music as Eric
Clapton.... and you write with the music on.... what is in your CD
now?
SKing: Right now I'm listening to Everclear. Tomorrow is Dwight
Yokam. And the day after that...who knows???
SKing: THANK YOU ALL! GOOD NIGHT!!
Host: We WON'T say 'That's so cool" --- even if it was.
Hi everyone,
As many of you may have already heard, 55 year old David Dukes
collapsed and died from an unknown cause last Monday during a day off
from filming "Rose Red".
Rose Red started filming in Seattle on August 22, 2000 and was
scheduled to wrap principal photography on December 20, 2000, but at
this time there is no word on how far back this may now be pushed.

I have also been swamped with copies of the Transcript from AOL's
chat with Stephen King. This is the Second chat that King has had
online recently, and primarily deals with "On Writing". This is not
the same chat I advertised in the last email. Because I ended up
getting over 200 requests for the transcript last time, I will send
this one out to everyone in the next email.

Part 3 of The Plant has been online for a couple of weeks now, and
King has reported that the payment level is slightly below the 75%
level he required to continue. This is not a good situation, but he
will post part 4 on 23 October 2000. Part 4 is the first section that
is actually new text, and will reportedly be about 20-25,000 words,
which is more than twice the 10,000 words in the last 3 parts. Price
will probably be $2, which is still excellent value.

Some Horrorking.Com updates:
A few new largeprint books have been added to Horrorking.Com's links
to books.
I have updated the character list for IT. The character list went
from a few hundred to 739 people, making the file about 120K in size
now, so it will take a while to download.
Quite a few new DVD's have been added to the links: Pet Sematary, The
Stand, The Langoliers (a stand alone, and horror pack version), The
Dead Zone, Creepshow, Cujo (Horror Pack version), Thinner (Horror
Pack version).
I hope to offer Australian King fans a new source to order books via
Horrorking.Com. OzBooks have recently announced a partnership program
that I am looking into.
Because of the number of types of books (Hard cover, paperback, audio
CD/Tape etc), and the various sources, I am considering making a
seperate "online store" for each of the books & movies so I dont
clutter up each of the individual book and movie pages. This could
include a short description of each of the items.
What do you all think of this idea??? The more feedback I get, the
better, and it proves that you all read the message.(Grin)

I had a request to place this in my newsletter from PollWeb.
We are looking for opinions about Stephen King's experimental
publishing ventures, RIDING THE BULLET and THE PLANT. According to a
survey carried out by Carol Fitzgerald of the Book Report Network,
only 1% of those who downloaded Stephen King's RIDING THE BULLET
actually read the book. eBookNet.com is sounding the call to all King
fans: we need your help to find the truth. We'd also like your
opinion about THE PLANT. What do you think -- is this the wave of
the publishing future?
