Here in Queensbridge Houses, the largest public housing project in
North America we alternate from days with shut-down of elevator
service with days of hot water shut down with at least one notice that
BOTH may go down at one time.

This is to "conserve power". We are one block away from BIG ALLIS
part of the electricity generating complex that supplies THIRTY PER
CENT of all power to NYC.

At this rate, the entire city could have electricity as reliable as
Iraq.

Dear neighbor,

The past nine days have been incredibly difficult. I share your
frustration, anger and concerns about the blackout, and how it has
been addressed. I am writing to invite you to attend and testify at
the City Council's first hearing on the blackout, which is being held
at 10am tomorrow (Thursday, July 27th) in the Council Chambers at
City Hall. Con Edison has been called to testify as well, but it is
critically important at this hearing that we also hear from the
people who have lived through the power outages. Please contact my
office at 718.383.9566 if you are able to attend.

When the power outages began last week, I don't think any of us
thought they would last as long as they have. Nine days later, Con
Edison has yet to bring us completely out of this situation, or even
to offer us a plan and a timetable for doing so. This situation is
an outrage, and I will demand answers.

The way we've pulled together and helped each other in the face of
adversity and uncertainty has made me so proud to be from this
neighborhood. At the same time, seeing my neighbors struggle, even
as Con Edison has been telling us that the problem is solved or does
not exist, makes my blood boil. I promise to do everything I can to
hold the people responsible for this accountable.

As the power slowly comes back on, I encourage residents and
businesses that lost food because of the blackout to seek
reimbursement from Con Edison by filling out the forms available
here: http://www.coned.com/customercentral/lawclaims.asp. Businesses
can also contact the City's Department of Small Business Services by
calling 311 for additional help in recovering from the blackout. I
know that over the past nine days we lost more than just food, and as
we move beyond the immediate crisis we will be looking at other forms
of restitution.

Again, please contact my office at 718.383.9566 to attend tomorrow's
City Council hearing into the blackout. And until power is fully
restored, I ask that you continue to check on your neighbors who
might need help. If you know anyone in need of assistance, or if you
have any questions or concerns, please contact my staff at
718.383.9566.

Thank you.

Sincerely yours,

Eric Gioia

Dear neighbor,

The City Council's first hearing on the blackout has been rescheduled
for Monday, July 31st at 10am in the Council Chambers at City Hall.
What we have experienced these past nine days is an outrage, and I
will be demanding answers. I urge you to attend this hearing if you
can. Con Edison has been called to testify, but it is critically
important that we also hear from the residents and business owners
who have lived through the power outages. Please contact my office
at 718.383.9566 if you are able to attend.

In the meantime, I encourage you to seek reimbursement from Con
Edison for any spoiled food by filling out the forms available here:
http://www.coned.com/customercentral/lawclaims.asp. Businesses can
also contact the City's Department of Small Business Services for
additional help by calling 311. The losses we have experienced,
however, go beyond spoiled food. I promise to do everything I can to
hold the people responsible for this accountable.

Again, please contact my office at 718.383.9566 to attend Monday's
City Council hearing about the blackout. And until power is fully
restored, I ask that you continue to check on your neighbors who
might need help. If you know anyone in need of assistance, or if you
have any questions or concerns, please contact my staff at
718.383.9566.

Thank you.

Sincerely yours,

City Council gives nod to Silvercup West
Crain's NY Business, August 16, 2006
The City Council gave its okay, as expected, for one the largest
film and television production centers to start construction in Long
Island City, Queens. Silvercup Studios, production home of The
Sopranos and other television programs, plans to build a $1 billion,
2.7 million square foot TV and film complex, comprising eight
soundstages, 665,000 square feet of commercial space and 1,000 units
of housing. Silvercup expects the project to create 3,900 permanent
jobs and 2,500 indirect jobs.

The City Council's approval follows recommendations made by the City
Planning Commission, Queens Borough President Helen Marshall and
local Community Board 2, all of which endorsed the project, slated
for completion by 2010.

Plans also call for a publicly accessible roof terrace overlooking
the Manhattan skyline, public plazas along Vernon Boulevard and
eventually a new street end public open space where 43rd Avenue
meets the East River.

"In addition to the obvious benefits for this renowned studio,
Queens residents will benefit from the building of affordable
housing, space for cultural and recreational uses and a waterfront
esplanade in the shadow of the Queensboro Bridge," said Ms. Marshall
in a statement.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the production industry generates $5
billion annually for the city. "We are committed to expanding our
share of this vital industry," he said. With its expansion of
Silvercup Studios East in 1999, Silvercup Studios operates more than
400,000 square feet of space and has 18 studios, on-site production
offices and extensive set, prop and wardrobe storage areas.

Amalgamated Bank To Open on 21st Street
Soon 15,000 residents of LIC's Queensbridge Houses soon won't have
to waste money on transportation or check-cashing just to manage
their finances. A full-service branch of the Amalgamated Bank,
complete with 24-hour ATM service, a drive-thru window, and parking
for 15 cars, is coming to 21st Street and 36th Avenue in LIC next
January as part of an effort to encourage economic development and
provide financial services in under banked areas of the city.
Currently, there are no banks within a mile of Queensbridge Houses.
Residents either use check-cashing services, or take mass
transportation to a bank far from their homes. Assemblywoman Cathy
Nolan was instrumental in the creation of a Banking Development
District to help the area's economy. State law assures some deposit
of state and city monies in the development district bank.

Googling for ATM Master Passwords

By Ryan Naraine
September 21, 2006

Using clues obtained from a YouTube video and a simple four-word
Google search engine query, a criminal can find step-by-step
instructions for how to hack into and take control of thousands of
ATMs scattered around the United States.

Following up on a CNN report out of Virginia Beach, Va., here as a
YouTube video, that a man reprogrammed an ATM at a gas station to
dispense $20 bills instead of $5 bills, a New York-based security
researcher did some old-fashioned online sleuthing and discovered
that
the operator manual for that specific model of ATM could be legally
obtained in about 15 minutes.

Dave Goldsmith, founder and president of penetration testing outfit
Matasano Security, in New York, did not say how he obtained the
operator manual-which contains master passwords and other sensitive
security information about the cash-dispensing machines-but an eWEEK
investigation shows that a simple Google query will return a 102-
page
PDF file that provides a road map to the hack.

Goldsmith, a respected researcher who co-founded @Stake and
previously led Symantec's Security Academy, said he traced clues
from
the video to identify the make and model of the ATM, a Tranax
Mini-Bank 1500 Series, and started an experiment to see how easy it
would be to legally obtain an operator manual.

In an interview with eWEEK, Goldsmith said he first dug around on
Tranax Technologies' Web site and found a knowledge base article
that
mentioned that the ATM is programmed with passwords that can be
found
in the operator's manual.

Rangel Pushes to Protect Federal Housing Aid
WNYC Newsroom

NEW YORK, NY October 20, 2006 —Directors of several public housing
authorities across the state held a forum in midtown Manhattan today
to rally support for more federal funding.

REPORTER: The heads say in 2007 public housing projects in New York
state will lose $240 million, including more than $100 million in
New York City. Congressman Charlie Rangel spoke at the event and
says the federal government is responsible for housing some of the
most vulnerable citizens.

RANGEL: It just seems to me that their should be some sensitivity
not just for restoring lifestyle and infrastructure in Baghdad but
also to support the infrastructure in our major cities throughout
this country.

REPORTER: The federal Department of Housing and Urban Development
says while some housing authorities will lose money due to a new
funding formula, about 75 percent of them will benefit from it.
According to the New York City Housing Authority more than 400,000
families live in their developments

Sex offenders living in NYC public housing
NEW YORK, Nov. 5 (UPI) -- A New York City councilman says more than
200 registered sex offenders live in low-cost public housing in
violation of local and federal laws.

Councilman Eric Gioia said he plans to join neighborhood leaders,
advocates and residents of public housing in urging the New York
City Housing Authority to launch an investigation into the matter,
the New York Daily News said Sunday.

Registered sex offenders living in public housing violates both
NYCHA policy and a federal law that bars such living arrangements.

Gioia said he wants the NYCHA to develop a plan to get sex offenders
out of public housing and enact safeguards so that they cannot live
in public housing complexes in the future, the Daily News said.

Gioia said a registered sex offender living in a Queens complex
attacked a woman there.

NYCHA runs 179,025 public housing apartments in 344 developments,
the Daily News said.

--------
It should be remembered that NYCHA has had a policy of delibertaly
leaving lobby doors unlockable to punish building tenants.

Texas Firm Announces Alliance With New York City Housing Authority

Grand Prairie, TX 75050 November 16 2006

Dallas based CRI has formed an alliance with New York City Housing
Authority (NYCHA) to help NYCHA residents find jobs. CRI, in
conjunction with NYCHA, has launched www.jobnow.org, a job board
specifically developed to help employers with job openings connect
with NYCHA residents seeking employment.

Jobnow.org provides tools that allow a NYCHA resident to compile a
resume online and submit their resume to employers who have posted
job openings on the job board. Jobnow.org also provides NYCHA
residents the opportunity to take the Career Advisor assessment
which directs them to the jobs they are most likely to be successful
performing.

Jobnow.org provides employers with another benefit besides the
ability to reach a pool of potential job applicants. In addition to
allowing NYCHA residents to apply for job openings, Jobnow.org
screens job applicants for new hire tax credits. Employers who hire
a NYCHA resident that qualifies for a tax credit can apply the
credit dollar for dollar against income taxes payable, thus creating
a new stream of revenue. Tax credits vary in value from $ 1,500.00
to $ 8,500.00 per new hire, yet it is estimated that 99 percent of
employers fail to take advantage of this lucrative opportunity to
enhance their bottom line.

Jobnow.org represents a significant opportunity for employers who
have job openings for which a sufficient supply of qualified
candidates is not readily available, while providing NYCHA residents
a resource to improve the chances of finding meaningful employment.

About CRI: CRI brings over 40 years of expertise and experience in
pre-employment applicant attraction and screening services to its
clients. Its nationwide and international clients span the gamut of
large, medium, and small companies in a myriad of different
industries. Its main personnel assessment, the Achiever, has been
widely used by business, governmental facilities, government
contractors, educational facilities and associations for well over
four decades to select employees that fit the organization and the
job for which they are being considered. CRI's Employment Center
provides automated applicant attraction and screening via the
internet to enable employers to increase their applicant flow,
automatically qualify job candidates from job seekers, and maintain
a pool of qualified job candidates. For more information, visit

President Appoints Family Planning Chief Who Doesn't Even Believe in
Birth Control

Rep. Maloney, who led effort to determine president's position on
birth control:

"Back to the drawing board" to protect access to birth control

WASHINGTON, DC - President Bush has appointed Dr. Eric Keroack,
medical director of a crisis pregnancy center that deems birth
control "demeaning," to head family-planning programs at the
Department of Health and Human Services. In his new position, this
anti-contraceptive, anti-choice official will control hundreds of
millions of dollars meant for programs to provide access to birth
control and will help direct administration policy on reproductive
health.

Recently, a group of Members of Congress, led by Rep. Carolyn
Maloney (NY-14), waited close to a year for the president to answer
their question about whether he supports birth control
(http://maloney.house.gov/index.php?
option=com_content&task=view&id=1134&Itemid=61 ). Today, Rep.
Maloney said the appointment was outrageous.

"Radical right-wing ideology is apparently alive and well at the
White House," said Maloney. "It's no coincidence that we learned
about this after the election, because you can be sure that the vast
majority of American voters wouldn't stomach this appointment. The
women of America should realize that the fringe-right attack on
their reproductive choices is not limited to abortion - they are
going after the availability of birth control, and they are
determined.

"It took a year for the president to finally tell us that he
actually does support birth control, and now he appoints a doctor
who doesn't. As they say, actions speak louder than words. In the
effort to get the White House to moderate its position on birth
control, it looks like we're back to the drawing board."
