Description

A national discussion for advocates for instant runoff voting, the majority voting form of ranked choice voting that improves traditional runoff elections by saving money and promoting more positive campaigns and improves plurality elections by upholding majority rule and accommodating more choices by allowing voters to rank candidates (1, 2, 3).

Most instant runoff voting elections use gradual elimination of weak candidates and recounting ballots until there is a majority winner in the final round. An alternate approach is to eliminate all but the top two candidates, as in a runoff election. If your first choice is in the runoff, your ballot counts for that candidate in the second round. If your first choice is eliminated, your ballot counts for your next highest ranked candidate in the runoff. The candidate with the most votes in the second round wins, just like in a runoff election, but without the expense of a second, separate election.

Instant runoff voting eliminates concerns about "wasted votes" and the "lesser evil" dilemma. This inclusive system is used to elect the mayor of London, the president of Ireland, the House of Representatives in Australia, the mayors of cities like San Francisco, Minneapolis and Oakland, many internal elections in the Utah Republican Party and many student governments. The system is also known as preferential voting, alternative vote and ranked choice voting.

There are several state-level groups (enter the state postal code after InstantRunoff such as instantrunoffCA) as well as several unmoderated discussions. Join this political discussion with backers from of all 50 states to promote a reform that improves our democracy, increases voter turnout, saves taxpayer money by consolidating local runoff elections into one vote, protects majority rule, turns third parties into constructive crusades instead of 'spoiler' campaigns and makes our democracy work better. This list is moderated; only two messages are sent per day.
