Mr. Hodge was nominated by Mr. Rhon A. Connor, Environment Officer, who provided a comprehensive summary of Mr. Hodge's conservation leadership in Anguilla, dating back even to his activities at the Albena Lake Hodge Comprehensive School, and carrying through his eight years working on the staff of the Anguilla National Trust and his government service for the past nine years.
During his time in Government, Mr. Hodge has been instrumental in building the Environment Department which he heads and in exercising a key role in formulating and representing Anguilla's positions vis-a-vis the major multilateral environmental agreements, such as the United Nations' Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Fauna and Flora (CITES), RAMSAR Convention, Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD). Regionally Karim has advocated a strengthened environmental commitment for Anguilla to the St. George's Declaration of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States, and he has been a participant in the formulation of the United Kingdom Overseas Territories Environment Charter and the United Kingdom White Paper on Partnership for Progress and Prosperity in the Overseas Territories. In his nomination, Mr. Connor especially noted Mr. Hodge's "relentless effort and perseverance in developing the said agency (Department of Environment) from a “one man” department to one with a full compliment of qualified and trained staff for achieving its overall mandate of effective environmental management and biodiversity conservation in Anguilla."
Our colleagues at Island Resources Foundation and all of those associated with the McFarlane Award join in conveying our congratulations and best wishes to Mr. Hodge . This is a well-deserved tribute in recognition of Mr Hodge's active and committed leadership and promotion of national support for the environmental heritage of Anguilla.
