Thanks for the tip. I'll make sure to watch this movie. There is another
women that has done the same and sometime her video is shown on the
various PBS stations. Her name is Frances Mayes and her book is Bella
Toscana. We have the book, and the video. This house in umbria must be a
pretty similar story. Umbria is a region south of Tuscany. Its named
means shaded because during Roman times there were many woods and trees.
It's a very nice part of Central Italy. Perugia which is the biggest
town is really nice. The downtown of this city It has a maintained a
medieval aspect. Really a great city and region to visit. The landscape
is really similar to the tuscan one, but technically  is another region.
I agreed with your comment about HBO, but I noticed that the various PBS
stations have frequently good quality program about the real cultural
and artistic Italy.

I hope this post is not inappropriate for this group.

My mother-in-law is from a small town in Northern Italy in the
Lombardy region named Sesto Calende.  She used to sing a lullaby song
to my husband when he was a child & I am trying to find the whole
song with lyrics in Italian & English.  Challenge one is that she has
said it is in a Dialect of the region that is old & mixed with
Austrian.  Challenge number two is I do not have a lot of the words
to the song since she will not write it down for us.

The lullaby is about a girl named Luzia.  It is a song about dancing
dolls and that when they come to visit the children should all go to
sleep.  There may also be mention of a witch that makes the dolls
dance.

I realize this may be a silly request for your group but just
wondered if anyone might have any memories of this song on be able to
suggest where I could find out more about it.

10PM.

The Documentary is up against the first hour of the last half of:

In this Documentary, David Chase has been invited to comment on
Stereotyping???
Really??? And what dare say, is he going to say???:

1) Shame on those people who do it. I would never do it!!!!

Stereotyping:

AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. JACK SHAHEEN

The 265 million Arabs on the planet range from herdsmen to college
professors, and all are inheritors of a history and culture rich in
achievements ranging from scientific and architectural virtuosity to literary
eloquence.

But as Arab-American academic Jack G. Shaheen points out, the only ones who
appear in contemporary American movies are bloodthirsty terrorists and
religious fanatics. "Missing from the vast majority of scenarios are ordinary
Arab men, women and children, living ordinary lives," he notes in his recent
book, Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People.

As a child growing up in Pittsburgh in the 1940s and 1950s, he recalls
feeling sympathy for African-Americans, Jews and other victims of societal
prejudice, and winced at stereotyped portrayals on the screen. It was not
until his own children pointed out to him a caricature of Arabs in a Popeye
cartoon that he first realized his own ethnic heritage might be getting the
same treatment.

For his book, Shaheen studied nearly a thousand Hollywood films, dating back
to the 1920s, that portrayed Arab characters — almost always, he discovered,
in a negative light.

A former Fulbright scholar and retired professor of communications at
Southern Illinois University, Shaheen has served as a consultant for CBS News
and for numerous entertainment companies, including DreamWorks. He recently
talked to journalist Patrick Kiger about how Arabs and Arab-Americans are
portrayed in American TV and movies and the damage it does.

While it is true that a handful of criminals of Italian ancestry, from Al
Capone to John Gotti, have run vast underworld empires in this country, as
one Italian-American Web site recently calculated, only 0.78 percent of the
nation's 14.7 million Italian-Americans have ever been convicted of a crime.

Nevertheless, in the movies and TV, when the subject is organized crime, the
mobsters most often seemed to be portrayed as Italian-Americans.

But there's a peculiar twist. The media image of the Italian-American as
Mafioso has been created and nurtured, in large part, by writers, directors
and actors who themselves were Italian-Americans.

The seminal works are director Francis Coppola's The Godfather (1972) and The
Godfather Part II (1974). The films were based upon the work of pulp novelist
Mario Puzo, who, despite growing up the child of immigrants in a tough New
York neighborhood, never actually met any real Mafioso and based his work
largely on news articles about the mob. (The model for the mob chieftain Don
Corleone, Puzo eventually admitted, was his own shrewd, streetwise mother.)

Puzo's and Coppola's fictional Corleone clan didn't offend Italian-Americans
in the way that ethnic stereotypes had aroused hurt and ire. It was a
sympathetic, sanitized version of the mob, in which criminals were dignified,
brave, wise, and violent only when they had no other viable option. (By
design, the word "Mafia" never appears in the Godfather movies.) The
"Godfather" became so accepted, in fact, that the movie's theme music
sometimes was played at Italian-American weddings.

with the "big lie" which
said that anti-Semitism was fueled by 'erroneous and unjust interpretations of
the New Testament regarding the
Jewish people'' engendered ``feelings of hostility toward this people.'''
Nothing could be farther from the truth,
and this commentary is filled with proof that the Jews earned every drop of
hatred, because the Jews were the
very first to spew it, and they still spew it at Christians through the ADL,
JDL, ACLU, Democratic Party, all the
major newspapers, networks, news rooms, film studios, and other operatives which
the Jews either own or
control or both.
As the years roll by, religious leaders--whose distance in time blinds them from
the realities of early Christianity
in which Jews regularly stoned Christians and chased them from cities across the
entire expanse of the Roman
Empire--now begin to make "the false peace" with their sworn enemies, the Jews.
The Jews are no Saints, although, as owners of the news media, they love to
paint themselves in this light. Yet,
their own little religious nation of Israel is a state terror organization which
owns atomic bombs, poison gas,
anthrax, and other mass extermination weapons. Nonetheless when Iraq or Libya,
neither of which will mouth
Jewish rhetoric, perform some act, it is flashed upon our Jewish owned media
immediately. Even a lone Jew
walking through Jerusalem who is stabbed by an Arab gets coverage on the front
section of America's mostly
Jewish-owned newspapers and on the mostly Jewish-owned NEWS networks, as though
what happened to a
single Jew in Jerusalem were in even the slightest way relevant to anything that
Americans would need to know;
and, in most cases, 20-30 such stabbings probably occurred in each and every
American city that very same day
without receiving any coverage in the Jewish owned newspapers of America. Why?
Because to a Jew, Jews are
important and non-Jews, who are called 'goyim' or trash by Jews in their private
conversations and in The
Talmud which many Jews follow, are nothing but people who work to make Jews
wealthy. That is a part of their
literature--e.g., Old Testament, Talmud, Kaballah--where hundreds of references
to the Jewish racism against
non-Jews is totally open for all to see.

Loaning money:

interest. You may make a foreigner [Gentile] pay interest but your

[This is how they become so rich today in any country they are allowed
to set up shop. They can't generate any wealth on their own and Israel
is the best example. They won't exploit each other. ]
Indebtedness:
"And in case your brother [fellow Jew] grows poor alongside you and he
has to sell himself to you, you must not use him for slavish service.
As for the slave man and your slave girl who become yours from the
[Gentile] nations that are round about you people, from them you may
buy a slave man and a slave girl. And you must pass them on as an
inheritance to your sons after you to inherit as a possession to time
indefinite. You may use them as workers, but upon the sons of Israel,
you must not tread, the one upon the other, with tyranny." Leviticus
25: 39,44,46
[Notice that Jews only worked their Gentile "slaves" with tyranny BUT
not their indebted Jewish "slaves!" Gentiles were to be passed down as
any other livestock as an inheritance but notice that Jews were not-
they were to be released after six years of indebtedness as described
in Deuteronomy 15: 12,13 which says: "In case there should be sold to
you your brother, a Hebrew or a Hebrewess, and he has served you six
years, then in the seventh year you should send him out from you as
one set free... you must not send him away empty handed." No Gentile
had any such provision of release- it looks as if Jews Only Help
Jews.]
Slavery & Genocide:
"In case you draw near to city to fight against it, you must announce
to it terms of peace. And it must occur that if it gives a peaceful
answer to you and it has opened up to you, it must occur that ALL the
people found in it should become yours for forced labor, and they must
serve you. But if it does not make peace with you and it actually
makes war with you and you have to besiege it, you must strike every
male in it with the edge of the sword. Only the women and the little
children and the domestic animals and everything that happens to be in
the city, all of its spoil you will plunder for yourselves; and you
must eat the spoil of your enemies. That is the way you will do to all
the cities very far away from you that are not of the cities of these
nations. It is only of the cities of these people that you must not
preserve anything alive."
[All scripture taken from Deuteronomy 20: 10-16 Jews were to give the
Gentiles a choice of being their slaves and servants or be killed!
Another case of Jews Only Helping Jews!]
So, you see, the Old Testament, which has, by the way, many other racist
statements about Jews killing non-Jews
and how that is an excellent idea, is truly a racist document.
Let us turn to the Roman Historian, Tacitus, who wrote about the Jews and their
hatred for non-Jews in detail:

church as they tried to come to grips with the great cultural
differences between Jews and Gentiles.

mountains, hills, bushes, etc, idolaters, should be cut down with the
sword. But as it was impossible to exterminate heathenism, Rabbinic

�To prevent Jews from being inadvertently led into idolatry
�To avoid all participation in idolatry
�Not to do anything which might aid the heathen in their worship; and,

From the Talmudic Tractate Abhodah Zarah, on the subject of idolatry,
paraphrased - Even the Mishnah goes so far as to forbid aid to a
mother in the hour of her need, or nourishment to her babe, in order
not to bring up a child for idolatry. But this is not all. Heathens
were, indeed, not to be forced into danger, but yet not to be
delivered from it. "The best among the Gentiles, Kill; the best among
serpents, crush its head."
Still more terrible was the fanaticism which directed that heretics
and those who had left the Jewish faith should be thrown into actual
danger, or, if they were already in it, to remove any chance for them
to escape. No contact of any kind was to be had with such - not even
to call medical aid in case of danger to life, since it was deemed,
that he who had to do with heretics was in imminent peril of becoming
one himself, and that, if a heretic returned to the true faith, he
should die at once - partly to pay for his sin, and partly from fear
of relapse.
The Jew had a low estimate of the Gentile's character. The most vile
and unnatural crimes were imputed to Gentiles. They considered it not
safe to leave cattle in their charge, to allow their women to nurse
infants, or their physicians to attend the sick, nor to walk in their
company, without taking precautions against sudden attacks.
The Gentiles should, as far as possible, be altogether avoided, except
in cases of necessity or for the sake of business. They and theirs
were defiled; their houses unclean, as containing idols or things
dedicated to idols. Their feasts and their joyous occasions were
polluted by idolatry. You could not leave the room if a Gentile was in
it because he might, carelessly or on purpose, defile the wine or food
on the table, or the oil and wheat in the cupboard.
Under such circumstances, everything must be regarded as unclean.
Three days before a heathen festival, and three days after, all
business or contact with heathen was avoided, for fear of giving help
or pleasure. Jews were to avoid passing through a city where there was
an idolatrous feast - nay, they were not even to sit down within the
shadow of a tree dedicated to idol-worship. Such a tree's wood was
polluted; if it was used in cooking, the bread was unclean; if a
shuttle of a loom had been made from it, all the cloth woven on it was
forbidden. In addition, if such cloth had been mixed with other pieces
of cloth, or if a garment made with it had been placed with other
garments, all of the garments became unclean.
Jewish workmen were not to help in building basilicas, stadiums, or
places where judicial sentences were pronounced by the heathen. If was
not lawful to rent houses or sell cattle to Gentiles. Milk drawn by a
heathen, if a Jew had not been present to watch it, bread and oil
prepared by them, were unlawful. Their wine was wholly forbidden; the
mere touch of a heathen polluted a whole cask of wine. Even to smell
of heathen wine was forbidden! If wine had been dedicated to an idol,
it defiled a man to carry on a stick even an olive's weight of it.
Other wine, if prepared by a heathen, was prohibited for personal use
and for trading. Wine prepared by a Jew, however, which had been
deposited in the custody of a Gentile, was prohibited for personal
use, but it was permitted to sell it.
As for Christianity, which I presume the Catholic Church feels it is a part of,
the Jews hounded the Christians in a
genocidal frenzy during the Roman Empire as described in the New Testament:

deliver you to synagogues and
prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account
of my name.
The obvious people doing the persecuting here are the Jews, and they are
specifically seen rounding up Christians
for the kill. What is the Vatican thinking about saying that 'erroneous and
unjust interpretations of the New
Testament regarding
the Jewish people'' engendered ``feelings of hostility toward this
people.''' There is nothing erroneous about Christians hating Jews. In fact, the
Jews continue to
attempt to eradicate Christianity in every nation where they live. In our own
city, two Jews tried to force
Florissant to take down a nativity scene under the banner of the First Amendment
which was written NOT to
destroy Christianity but to preserve it against people like the two Jews who
sued--Deborah Jacobs of the ACLU
(Anti-Christian Liberties Union) and her operative Mr. Feinstein.
Acts 7:52
Was there ever a prophet your fathers did not persecute? They even killed those
who predicted the coming
of
the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him--
The author of Acts, Luke, is definitely saying that the Jews murdered Jesus,
and, in fact, they did. Their leaders
hounded Jesus, and they even sent a man out to kill Lazarus after Jesus brought
Lazarus back to life. That is
found in John 12:10.

Israel has never paid one cent in
reparations, nor do the Jewish newspapers in America ever mention the atrocity
of 100 million dead Christians
which caused Hitler's rise as a reaction to death from the guns of Jews that
communism wanted to place across
Western Europe in 1920-1940. Not one mention of this deadly Jewish genocide of
Christians occurs in the
Vatican's announcement.
In John 11, we see the Jews with with the Jewish High Priest Caiaphus named as
plotting to kill Lazarus and
Jesus both in order to end his movement of redemption:

44The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a

withdrew to a region near
the desert, to a village called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples.

How does this co-exist with the Vatican's pronouncement that 'erroneous and
unjust interpretations of the New
Testament regarding

There is nothing erroneous whatsoever. The Jews were and are anti-Christian, and
the express murder of 100
million Christians at the hands of Jews embellished in communist drag during
1920-1940 when they slaughtered
priests, burned churches, killed devotees of Christ and never once torched a
synagogue but in fact had Stalin
declare that anti-Semitism was a capital crime. Whereas, anti-Christism was
perfectly all right, especially in the
Jewish communist state of the USSR where Christian killing went on hidden,
because American Jewish
newspaper did not and still will not carry it in their pages. If anything, Jews
are very protective of their own
against we mere goyim.
I believe that I have proven my case. If you see flaws in my reasoning, please
print them here so that I may
answer your complaints with more facts.
In my opinion, the Jews have, in most ways, brought calamity down upon their own
heads. Right now, in
America, they are at it again. They have put together a Democratic Party which
they run, have all the news
sources so that they pick almost all of our political candidates, and they have
the biggest lobby and the best
media blackmail money can buy. And, of course, our congressmen are the most
easily corrupted in the universe,
so they work hand-in-hand on selling out the majority of the population which is
European and Christian. The
replacement of whites and Christians is planned already, and the President has
been recently gloating over the
fact that whites are planned to be a minority in 2040. What he didn't mention is
that by 2140, we will be gone.
And that's genocide, and it's been planned for Christians in America by the
Jews, and it's in print everyday, but
just not covered for what it is.
For these reasons, I consider the Vatican to be a Jewish-occupied church which
is not an anti-christ church. By

Long-awaited Vatican document on Jews
defends Pius XII

VATICAN CITY (AP) -- The Vatican today expressed deep regret
for the ``errors and failures'' of Roman Catholics during the Holocaust
but strongly defended wartime Pope Pius XII in a statement promised a
decade ago to Jewish groups.
The 12-page document stopped short of apologizing for any failures by
church leaders, something bishops in several European countries have
done in recent years.
In 1987, Pope John Paul II had promised a statement to Jewish groups
based on what role, if any, the church might have had in the Holocaust.
In a preface, the pope, who has made improving relations with Jews a
cornerstone of his papacy, expressed hope that the document ``will
indeed help to heal the wounds of past misunderstandings and
injustices.''
But the document, prepared by the Commission for Religious Relations
with the Jews, seemed destined to anger those hoping for specific
apologies.
Only hours earlier, Israel's chief rabbi expressed dismay after learning
that the document would only refer in general terms to the church's
attitude to the persecution.
Chief Rabbi Meir Lau, himself a Holocaust survivor, demanded an
``explicit apology for the shameful attitude of the Pope (Pius XII) at the
time.''
Instead, the document defended Pius XII for using his first encyclical, in
1939, at the start of his papacy, to warn ``against theories which denied
the unity of the human race and against the deification of the State,'' and
which could all lead to a real ```hour of darkness.'''
The document praised the ``wisdom of Pius XII's diplomacy,'' saying it
had been acknowledged several times by Jewish groups. It quoted
Golda Meir, the former Israeli prime minister, as saying in 1958 at Pius'
death that he raised his voice ``when fearful martyrdom came to our
people.''
Asked about the expectations the document would have contained an
apology, Australian Cardinal Edward I. Cassidy defended his
commission's work.
``It's more than an apology. We feel we need to repent ... for those
members of our church who failed'' to do enough, Cassidy said at a
news conference.
John Paul reiterated his theme that, at the approach of third millennium
of Christianity, the church is urging Catholics to ``examine the
responsibility which they too have for the evils of our time.''
The document put distance between the Holocaust and any Christian
inspiration.
``The Shoah (Holocaust) was the work of a thoroughly modern
neo-pagan regime. Its anti-Semitism had its roots outside of Christianity
and, in pursuing its aims, did not hestitate to oppose the church and
persecute her members also,'' the document said.
Last fall, French bishops apologized for their silence during the
deportation of Jews, and German bishops have said that the church did
not do enough to fight Nazism and condemn the Holocaust.
Today's document did not move the pope's position beyond what he
expressed last fall to a seminar on anti-Jewish relations: ``In the
Christian world -- I do not say on the part of the church as such --
erroneous and unjust interpretations of the New Testament regarding
the Jewish people'' engendered ``feelings of hostility toward this
people.''
The document did take to task ``governments of some Western
countries of Christian tradition, including some in North and South
America'' for being ``more than hestitant to open their borders to the
persecuted Jews.''
John Paul, the document recalled, has acknowledged that while some
Christians were courageous, ``the spiritual resistance and concrete
action of other Christians was not that which might have been expected.

``We cannot know how many Christians in countries occupied or ruled
by the Nazi powers or their allies were horrified at the disappearance of
their Jewish neighbors and yet were not strong enough to raise their
voices in protest,'' the document said.
``We deeply regret the errors and failures of those sons and daughters
of the church.''
The Vatican in 1993 agreed to have diplomatic ties with Israel, a
landmark in John Paul's papacy.
The last Vatican document of landmark proportions on Jewish relations
was a 1965 statement that came out of the Second Vatican Council
under Paul VI and said the Jews cannot be collectively blamed for the

(NEW YORK) The Vatican announcement apologizing to the Jews arrived this
week with the "big lie" which
said that anti-Semitism was fueled by 'erroneous and unjust interpretations
of the New Testament regarding the
Jewish people'' engendered ``feelings of hostility toward this people.'''
Nothing could be farther from the truth,
and this commentary is filled with proof that the Jews earned every drop of
hatred, because the Jews were the
very first to spew it, and they still spew it at Christians through the
ADL, JDL, ACLU, Democratic Party, all the
major newspapers, networks, news rooms, film studios, and other operatives
which the Jews either own or
control or both.
As the years roll by, religious leaders--whose distance in time blinds them
from the realities of early Christianity
in which Jews regularly stoned Christians and chased them from cities
across the entire expanse of the Roman
Empire--now begin to make "the false peace" with their sworn enemies, the
Jews.
The Jews are no Saints, although, as owners of the news media, they love to
paint themselves in this light. Yet,
their own little religious nation of Israel is a state terror organization
which owns atomic bombs, poison gas,
anthrax, and other mass extermination weapons. Nonetheless when Iraq or
Libya, neither of which will mouth
Jewish rhetoric, perform some act, it is flashed upon our Jewish owned
media immediately. Even a lone Jew
walking through Jerusalem who is stabbed by an Arab gets coverage on the
front section of America's mostly
Jewish-owned newspapers and on the mostly Jewish-owned NEWS networks, as
though what happened to a
single Jew in Jerusalem were in even the slightest way relevant to anything
that Americans would need to know;
and, in most cases, 20-30 such stabbings probably occurred in each and
every American city that very same day
without receiving any coverage in the Jewish owned newspapers of America.
Why? Because to a Jew, Jews are
important and non-Jews, who are called 'goyim' or trash by Jews in their
private conversations and in The
Talmud which many Jews follow, are nothing but people who work to make Jews
wealthy. That is a part of their
literature--e.g., Old Testament, Talmud, Kaballah--where hundreds of
references to the Jewish racism against
non-Jews is totally open for all to see.

[This is how they become so rich today in any country they are allowed
to set up shop. They can't generate any wealth on their own and Israel
is the best example. They won't exploit each other. ]
Indebtedness:
"And in case your brother [fellow Jew] grows poor alongside you and he
has to sell himself to you, you must not use him for slavish service.
As for the slave man and your slave girl who become yours from the
[Gentile] nations that are round about you people, from them you may
buy a slave man and a slave girl. And you must pass them on as an
inheritance to your sons after you to inherit as a possession to time
indefinite. You may use them as workers, but upon the sons of Israel,
you must not tread, the one upon the other, with tyranny." Leviticus
25: 39,44,46
[Notice that Jews only worked their Gentile "slaves" with tyranny BUT
not their indebted Jewish "slaves!" Gentiles were to be passed down as
any other livestock as an inheritance but notice that Jews were not-
they were to be released after six years of indebtedness as described
in Deuteronomy 15: 12,13 which says: "In case there should be sold to
you your brother, a Hebrew or a Hebrewess, and he has served you six
years, then in the seventh year you should send him out from you as
one set free... you must not send him away empty handed." No Gentile
had any such provision of release- it looks as if Jews Only Help
Jews.]
Slavery & Genocide:
"In case you draw near to city to fight against it, you must announce
to it terms of peace. And it must occur that if it gives a peaceful
answer to you and it has opened up to you, it must occur that ALL the
people found in it should become yours for forced labor, and they must
serve you. But if it does not make peace with you and it actually
makes war with you and you have to besiege it, you must strike every
male in it with the edge of the sword. Only the women and the little
children and the domestic animals and everything that happens to be in
the city, all of its spoil you will plunder for yourselves; and you

the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him--
The author of Acts, Luke, is definitely saying that the Jews murdered
Jesus, and, in fact, they did. Their leaders
hounded Jesus, and they even sent a man out to kill Lazarus after Jesus
brought Lazarus back to life. That is

Western Europe in 1920-1940. Not one mention of this deadly Jewish genocide
of Christians occurs in the
Vatican's announcement.
In John 11, we see the Jews with with the Jewish High Priest Caiaphus named
as plotting to kill Lazarus and
Jesus both in order to end his movement of redemption:

There is nothing erroneous whatsoever. The Jews were and are
anti-Christian, and the express murder of 100
million Christians at the hands of Jews embellished in communist drag
during 1920-1940 when they slaughtered
priests, burned churches, killed devotees of Christ and never once torched
a synagogue but in fact had Stalin
declare that anti-Semitism was a capital crime. Whereas, anti-Christism was
perfectly all right, especially in the
Jewish communist state of the USSR where Christian killing went on hidden,
because American Jewish
newspaper did not and still will not carry it in their pages. If anything,
Jews are very protective of their own
against we mere goyim.
I believe that I have proven my case. If you see flaws in my reasoning,
please print them here so that I may
answer your complaints with more facts.
In my opinion, the Jews have, in most ways, brought calamity down upon
their own heads. Right now, in
America, they are at it again. They have put together a Democratic Party
which they run, have all the news
sources so that they pick almost all of our political candidates, and they
have the biggest lobby and the best
media blackmail money can buy. And, of course, our congressmen are the most
easily corrupted in the universe,
so they work hand-in-hand on selling out the majority of the population
which is European and Christian. The
replacement of whites and Christians is planned already, and the President
has been recently gloating over the
fact that whites are planned to be a minority in 2040. What he didn't
mention is that by 2140, we will be gone.
And that's genocide, and it's been planned for Christians in America by the
Jews, and it's in print everyday, but
just not covered for what it is.
For these reasons, I consider the Vatican to be a Jewish-occupied church
which is not an anti-christ church. By

Long-awaited Vatican document on Jews
defends Pius XII

VATICAN CITY (AP) -- The Vatican today expressed deep regret
for the ``errors and failures'' of Roman Catholics during the Holocaust
but strongly defended wartime Pope Pius XII in a statement promised a
decade ago to Jewish groups.
The 12-page document stopped short of apologizing for any failures by
church leaders, something bishops in several European countries have
done in recent years.
In 1987, Pope John Paul II had promised a statement to Jewish groups
based on what role, if any, the church might have had in the Holocaust.
In a preface, the pope, who has made improving relations with Jews a
cornerstone of his papacy, expressed hope that the document ``will
indeed help to heal the wounds of past misunderstandings and
injustices.''
But the document, prepared by the Commission for Religious Relations
with the Jews, seemed destined to anger those hoping for specific
apologies.
Only hours earlier, Israel's chief rabbi expressed dismay after learning
that the document would only refer in general terms to the church's
attitude to the persecution.
Chief Rabbi Meir Lau, himself a Holocaust survivor, demanded an
``explicit apology for the shameful attitude of the Pope (Pius XII) at the
time.''
Instead, the document defended Pius XII for using his first encyclical, in
1939, at the start of his papacy, to warn ``against theories which denied
the unity of the human race and against the deification of the State,'' and
which could all lead to a real ```hour of darkness.'''
The document praised the ``wisdom of Pius XII's diplomacy,'' saying it
had been acknowledged several times by Jewish groups. It quoted
Golda Meir, the former Israeli prime minister, as saying in 1958 at Pius'
death that he raised his voice ``when fearful martyrdom came to our
people.''
Asked about the expectations the document would have contained an
apology, Australian Cardinal Edward I. Cassidy defended his
commission's work.
``It's more than an apology. We feel we need to repent ... for those
members of our church who failed'' to do enough, Cassidy said at a
news conference.
John Paul reiterated his theme that, at the approach of third millennium
of Christianity, the church is urging Catholics to ``examine the
responsibility which they too have for the evils of our time.''
The document put distance between the Holocaust and any Christian
inspiration.
``The Shoah (Holocaust) was the work of a thoroughly modern
neo-pagan regime. Its anti-Semitism had its roots outside of Christianity
and, in pursuing its aims, did not hestitate to oppose the church and
persecute her members also,'' the document said.
Last fall, French bishops apologized for their silence during the
deportation of Jews, and German bishops have said that the church did
not do enough to fight Nazism and condemn the Holocaust.
Today's document did not move the pope's position beyond what he
expressed last fall to a seminar on anti-Jewish relations: ``In the
Christian world -- I do not say on the part of the church as such --
erroneous and unjust interpretations of the New Testament regarding
the Jewish people'' engendered ``feelings of hostility toward this
people.''
The document did take to task ``governments of some Western
countries of Christian tradition, including some in North and South
America'' for being ``more than hestitant to open their borders to the
persecuted Jews.''
John Paul, the document recalled, has acknowledged that while some
Christians were courageous, ``the spiritual resistance and concrete
action of other Christians was not that which might have been expected.

``We cannot know how many Christians in countries occupied or ruled
by the Nazi powers or their allies were horrified at the disappearance of
their Jewish neighbors and yet were not strong enough to raise their
voices in protest,'' the document said.
``We deeply regret the errors and failures of those sons and daughters
of the church.''
The Vatican in 1993 agreed to have diplomatic ties with Israel, a
landmark in John Paul's papacy.
The last Vatican document of landmark proportions on Jewish relations
was a 1965 statement that came out of the Second Vatican Council
under Paul VI and said the Jews cannot be collectively blamed for the

(NEW YORK) The Vatican announcement apologizing to the Jews arrived this
week with the "big lie" which
said that anti-Semitism was fueled by 'erroneous and unjust interpretations
of the New Testament regarding the
Jewish people'' engendered ``feelings of hostility toward this people.'''
Nothing could be farther from the truth,
and this commentary is filled with proof that the Jews earned every drop of
hatred, because the Jews were the
very first to spew it, and they still spew it at Christians through the
ADL, JDL, ACLU, Democratic Party, all the
major newspapers, networks, news rooms, film studios, and other operatives
which the Jews either own or
control or both.
As the years roll by, religious leaders--whose distance in time blinds them
from the realities of early Christianity
in which Jews regularly stoned Christians and chased them from cities
across the entire expanse of the Roman
Empire--now begin to make "the false peace" with their sworn enemies, the
Jews.
The Jews are no Saints, although, as owners of the news media, they love to
paint themselves in this light. Yet,
their own little religious nation of Israel is a state terror organization
which owns atomic bombs, poison gas,
anthrax, and other mass extermination weapons. Nonetheless when Iraq or
Libya, neither of which will mouth
Jewish rhetoric, perform some act, it is flashed upon our Jewish owned
media immediately. Even a lone Jew
walking through Jerusalem who is stabbed by an Arab gets coverage on the
front section of America's mostly
Jewish-owned newspapers and on the mostly Jewish-owned NEWS networks, as
though what happened to a
single Jew in Jerusalem were in even the slightest way relevant to anything
that Americans would need to know;
and, in most cases, 20-30 such stabbings probably occurred in each and
every American city that very same day
without receiving any coverage in the Jewish owned newspapers of America.
Why? Because to a Jew, Jews are
important and non-Jews, who are called 'goyim' or trash by Jews in their
private conversations and in The
Talmud which many Jews follow, are nothing but people who work to make Jews
wealthy. That is a part of their
literature--e.g., Old Testament, Talmud, Kaballah--where hundreds of
references to the Jewish racism against
non-Jews is totally open for all to see.

to set up shop. They can't generate any wealth on their own and Israel

has to sell himself to you, you must not use him for slavish service.
As for the slave man and your slave girl who become yours from the
[Gentile] nations that are round about you people, from them you may
buy a slave man and a slave girl. And you must pass them on as an
inheritance to your sons after you to inherit as a possession to time
indefinite. You may use them as workers, but upon the sons of Israel,
you must not tread, the one upon the other, with tyranny." Leviticus

[Notice that Jews only worked their Gentile "slaves" with tyranny BUT
not their indebted Jewish "slaves!" Gentiles were to be passed down as
any other livestock as an inheritance but notice that Jews were not-
they were to be released after six years of indebtedness as described
in Deuteronomy 15: 12,13 which says: "In case there should be sold to
you your brother, a Hebrew or a Hebrewess, and he has served you six
years, then in the seventh year you should send him out from you as
one set free... you must not send him away empty handed." No Gentile
had any such provision of release- it looks as if Jews Only Help
Jews.]
Slavery & Genocide:
"In case you draw near to city to fight against it, you must announce
to it terms of peace. And it must occur that if it gives a peaceful
answer to you and it has opened up to you, it must occur that ALL the
people found in it should become yours for forced labor, and they must
serve you. But if it does not make peace with you and it actually
makes war with you and you have to besiege it, you must strike every
male in it with the edge of the sword. Only the women and the little
children and the domestic animals and everything that happens to be in
the city, all of its spoil you will plunder for yourselves; and you
must eat the spoil of your enemies. That is the way you will do to all
the cities very far away from you that are not of the cities of these
nations. It is only of the cities of these people that you must not

[All scripture taken from Deuteronomy 20: 10-16 Jews were to give the
Gentiles a choice of being their slaves and servants or be killed!

So, you see, the Old Testament, which has, by the way, many other racist
statements about Jews killing non-Jews
and how that is an excellent idea, is truly a racist document.
Let us turn to the Roman Historian, Tacitus, who wrote about the Jews and
their hatred for non-Jews in detail:
Jews Attitude Toward the Gentiles
In conjunction with the study of several New Testament epistles, such
as the Epistle to Titus, this paper will give some insight into some
of the difficulties facing local church congregations of the early
church as they tried to come to grips with the great cultural
differences between Jews and Gentiles.
The first section is a quotation from from Alfred Edersheim, The Life
and Times of Jesus the Messiah.
"And then, as the proud Roman passed on the Sabbath through the
streets, Judaism would obtrude itself upon his notice, by the shops
that were shut, and by the strange figures that idly moved about in
holiday attire. They were strangers in a strange land, not only
without sympathy with what passed around, but with marked contempt and
abhorrence of it, while there was that about their whole bearing,
which expressed the unspoken feeling, that the time of Rome's fall,
and of their own supremacy, was at hand.
"To put the general feeling in the words of Tacitus, the Jews kept
close together, and were ever most liberal to one another; but they
were filled with bitter hatred of all others. They would neither eat
nor sleep with strangers; and the first thing which they taught their
proselytes was to despise the gods, to renounce their own country, and
to rend the bonds which had bound them to parents, children or
kindred...",
"To begin with, every Gentile child, so soon as born, was to be
regarded as unclean. Those [Gentiles] who actually worshipped
mountains, hills, bushes, etc, idolaters, should be cut down with the
sword. But as it was impossible to exterminate heathenism, Rabbinic
legislation kept certain definite objects in view, which may be
summarized:
?To prevent Jews from being inadvertently led into idolatry
?To avoid all participation in idolatry
?Not to do anything which might aid the heathen in their worship; and,

From the Talmudic Tractate Abhodah Zarah, on the subject of idolatry,
paraphrased - Even the Mishnah goes so far as to forbid aid to a
mother in the hour of her need, or nourishment to her babe, in order
not to bring up a child for idolatry. But this is not all. Heathens
were, indeed, not to be forced into danger, but yet not to be
delivered from it. "The best among the Gentiles, Kill; the best among
serpents, crush its head."
Still more terrible was the fanaticism which directed that heretics
and those who had left the Jewish faith should be thrown into actual
danger, or, if they were already in it, to remove any chance for them
to escape. No contact of any kind was to be had with such - not even
to call medical aid in case of danger to life, since it was deemed,
that he who had to do with heretics was in imminent peril of becoming
one himself, and that, if a heretic returned to the true faith, he
should die at once - partly to pay for his sin, and partly from fear
of relapse.
The Jew had a low estimate of the Gentile's character. The most vile
and unnatural crimes were imputed to Gentiles. They considered it not
safe to leave cattle in their charge, to allow their women to nurse
infants, or their physicians to attend the sick, nor to walk in their
company, without taking precautions against sudden attacks.
The Gentiles should, as far as possible, be altogether avoided, except
in cases of necessity or for the sake of business. They and theirs
were defiled; their houses unclean, as containing idols or things
dedicated to idols. Their feasts and their joyous occasions were
polluted by idolatry. You could not leave the room if a Gentile was in
it because he might, carelessly or on purpose, defile the wine or food
on the table, or the oil and wheat in the cupboard.
Under such circumstances, everything must be regarded as unclean.
Three days before a heathen festival, and three days after, all
business or contact with heathen was avoided, for fear of giving help
or pleasure. Jews were to avoid passing through a city where there was
an idolatrous feast - nay, they were not even to sit down within the
shadow of a tree dedicated to idol-worship. Such a tree's wood was
polluted; if it was used in cooking, the bread was unclean; if a
shuttle of a loom had been made from it, all the cloth woven on it was
forbidden. In addition, if such cloth had been mixed with other pieces
of cloth, or if a garment made with it had been placed with other
garments, all of the garments became unclean.
Jewish workmen were not to help in building basilicas, stadiums, or
places where judicial sentences were pronounced by the heathen. If was
not lawful to rent houses or sell cattle to Gentiles. Milk drawn by a
heathen, if a Jew had not been present to watch it, bread and oil
prepared by them, were unlawful. Their wine was wholly forbidden; the
mere touch of a heathen polluted a whole cask of wine. Even to smell
of heathen wine was forbidden! If wine had been dedicated to an idol,

Western Europe in 1920-1940. Not one mention of this deadly Jewish genocide
of Christians occurs in the
Vatican's announcement.
In John 11, we see the Jews with with the Jewish High Priest Caiaphus named
as plotting to kill Lazarus and
Jesus both in order to end his movement of redemption:

43When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!"

44The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen,
and a cloth around his face.
Jesus said to them, "Take off the grave clothes and let him go."
45Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what
Jesus did, put their faith in
him.
46But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.

47Then the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the
Sanhedrin. "What are we
accomplishing?" they asked. "Here is this man performing many miraculous
signs.
48If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the
Romans will come and take away
both our place [3] and our nation."
49Then one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, spoke
up, "You know nothing at all!
50You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the
people than that the whole nation
perish."
51He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he
prophesied that Jesus would die for the
Jewish nation,
52and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God,
to bring them together and make
them one.
53So from that day on they plotted to take his life.
54Therefore Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the Jews. Instead he
withdrew to a region near
the desert, to a village called Ephraim, where he stayed with his
disciples.
55When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, many went up from the
country to Jerusalem for their
ceremonial cleansing before the Passover.
56They kept looking for Jesus, and as they stood in the temple area they
asked one another, "What do you
think? Isn't he coming to the Feast at all?"
57But the chief priests and Pharisees had given orders that if anyone found
out where Jesus was, he should
report it so that they might arrest him.
How does this co-exist with the Vatican's pronouncement that 'erroneous and
unjust interpretations of the New
Testament regarding
the Jewish people'' engendered ``feelings of hostility toward this
people.'''
There is nothing erroneous whatsoever. The Jews were and are
anti-Christian, and the express murder of 100
million Christians at the hands of Jews embellished in communist drag
during 1920-1940 when they slaughtered
priests, burned churches, killed devotees of Christ and never once torched
a synagogue but in fact had Stalin
declare that anti-Semitism was a capital crime. Whereas, anti-Christism was
perfectly all right, especially in the
Jewish communist state of the USSR where Christian killing went on hidden,
because American Jewish
newspaper did not and still will not carry it in their pages. If anything,
Jews are very protective of their own
against we mere goyim.
I believe that I have proven my case. If you see flaws in my reasoning,
please print them here so that I may
answer your complaints with more facts.
In my opinion, the Jews have, in most ways, brought calamity down upon
their own heads. Right now, in
America, they are at it again. They have put together a Democratic Party
which they run, have all the news
sources so that they pick almost all of our political candidates, and they
have the biggest lobby and the best
media blackmail money can buy. And, of course, our congressmen are the most
easily corrupted in the universe,
so they work hand-in-hand on selling out the majority of the population
which is European and Christian. The
replacement of whites and Christians is planned already, and the President
has been recently gloating over the
fact that whites are planned to be a minority in 2040. What he didn't
mention is that by 2140, we will be gone.
And that's genocide, and it's been planned for Christians in America by the
Jews, and it's in print everyday, but
just not covered for what it is.
For these reasons, I consider the Vatican to be a Jewish-occupied church
which is not an anti-christ church. By
their documents will you know them.

Long-awaited Vatican document on Jews
defends Pius XII

VATICAN CITY (AP) -- The Vatican today expressed deep regret
for the ``errors and failures'' of Roman Catholics during the Holocaust
but strongly defended wartime Pope Pius XII in a statement promised a
decade ago to Jewish groups.
The 12-page document stopped short of apologizing for any failures by
church leaders, something bishops in several European countries have
done in recent years.
In 1987, Pope John Paul II had promised a statement to Jewish groups
based on what role, if any, the church might have had in the Holocaust.
In a preface, the pope, who has made improving relations with Jews a
cornerstone of his papacy, expressed hope that the document ``will
indeed help to heal the wounds of past misunderstandings and
injustices.''
But the document, prepared by the Commission for Religious Relations
with the Jews, seemed destined to anger those hoping for specific
apologies.
Only hours earlier, Israel's chief rabbi expressed dismay after learning
that the document would only refer in general terms to the church's
attitude to the persecution.
Chief Rabbi Meir Lau, himself a Holocaust survivor, demanded an
``explicit apology for the shameful attitude of the Pope (Pius XII) at the
time.''
Instead, the document defended Pius XII for using his first encyclical, in
1939, at the start of his papacy, to warn ``against theories which denied
the unity of the human race and against the deification of the State,'' and
which could all lead to a real ```hour of darkness.'''
The document praised the ``wisdom of Pius XII's diplomacy,'' saying it
had been acknowledged several times by Jewish groups. It quoted
Golda Meir, the former Israeli prime minister, as saying in 1958 at Pius'
death that he raised his voice ``when fearful martyrdom came to our
people.''
Asked about the expectations the document would have contained an
apology, Australian Cardinal Edward I. Cassidy defended his
commission's work.
``It's more than an apology. We feel we need to repent ... for those
members of our church who failed'' to do enough, Cassidy said at a
news conference.
John Paul reiterated his theme that, at the approach of third millennium
of Christianity, the church is urging Catholics to ``examine the
responsibility which they too have for the evils of our time.''
The document put distance between the Holocaust and any Christian
inspiration.
``The Shoah (Holocaust) was the work of a thoroughly modern
neo-pagan regime. Its anti-Semitism had its roots outside of Christianity
and, in pursuing its aims, did not hestitate to oppose the church and
persecute her members also,'' the document said.
Last fall, French bishops apologized for their silence during the
deportation of Jews, and German bishops have said that the church did
not do enough to fight Nazism and condemn the Holocaust.
Today's document did not move the pope's position beyond what he
expressed last fall to a seminar on anti-Jewish relations: ``In the
Christian world -- I do not say on the part of the church as such --
erroneous and unjust interpretations of the New Testament regarding
the Jewish people'' engendered ``feelings of hostility toward this
people.''
The document did take to task ``governments of some Western
countries of Christian tradition, including some in North and South
America'' for being ``more than hestitant to open their borders to the
persecuted Jews.''
John Paul, the document recalled, has acknowledged that while some
Christians were courageous, ``the spiritual resistance and concrete
action of other Christians was not that which might have been expected.
...''
``We cannot know how many Christians in countries occupied or ruled
by the Nazi powers or their allies were horrified at the disappearance of
their Jewish neighbors and yet were not strong enough to raise their
voices in protest,'' the document said.
``We deeply regret the errors and failures of those sons and daughters
of the church.''
The Vatican in 1993 agreed to have diplomatic ties with Israel, a
landmark in John Paul's papacy.
The last Vatican document of landmark proportions on Jewish relations
was a 1965 statement that came out of the Second Vatican Council
under Paul VI and said the Jews cannot be collectively blamed for the
crucifixion of Jesus. top of page

You could write a couple of dozen of books about pairing wine with
food. I read an article recently, I believe on the NYTimes, and I'll
try to give you my 2 cents about this. The idea behind pairing wine
with food, is pretty simple, you want to complement the taste of the
food with a . In other words if you are eating a delicate food with a
delicate taste, like  fish, you want to match it with a wine that is
not too heavy. Like a dry white wine. You don't want to have the the
taste of wine overpower the delicate test of the fish. Continuing on
that note a medium body red, like a chianti, is a good match for a
chicken dish, while a full body barolo or cabernet is a perfect match
for a steck.
Like everything these rules are not written in stone but based on
mostly on common sense. If you find a wine that you like, drink it
and be merry, and remember like the romans used to be in "vino
veritas", which translate to something like "in wine held the true"

I wish to call your attention to a "public service" ad running in today's (28
May 2003) NY Times. The ad purports to advance the cause of art education by
comparing and contrasting the life of the artist Caravaggio with that of the
fictional characters on the TV series The Sopranos!

Never in my life would I have anticipated seeing the name Caravaggio and the
term "fuggedabowdit" used in the same document. Too, an image of the artist's
youthful self-portrait carries a caption to the effect that this little sissy
boy would never have made it as a member of the Sopranos.
�
Words fail me. When I can gather my thoughts, I will write to the Ad Council.
I hope others do likewise.

This striking and inappropriate comparison was precisely our point. It's
horrible to think that someone would�confuse Caravaggio�with�"a guy in the
Sopranos," but the copy in the PSA makes the point that many children are at
risk for
making such a mistake because they�are not receiving an arts education. The
PSA encourages parents�to demand that their child's school curriculum include
an arts education.
�
We have four other print PSAs for this campaign which include copy saying:

No wonder people think Martha Graham invented the snack cracker.
No wonder people think Louis Armstrong�is the man who walked on the moon.
No wonder people say "Gesundheit" when you say "Tchaichovsky".

True Love Is Timeless

Oriundi is a love story that combines the strong
undercurrents of family tradition with the powerful,
and often uncertain, expectations for the future.

Giuseppe Padovani (Anthony Quinn) is attending a party
that is being hosted by his family in celebration
of his 93rd birthday. But for this Italian immigrant
living in Brazil, there seems to be no real reason for
celebration. His health is failing, his family is
falling apart, and his home and the business that he
and his wife started more than 60 years ago are being
sold.

At the party, Giuseppe is introduced to a relative,
Sofia D'Angelo (Leticia Spiller) who claims to be in
Brazil doing research on the Padovani family, after
having studied for the past few years in Italy. He is
struck by her incredible resemblance to his wife,
Caterina, who died in a tragic plane accident during
the celebration of the feast of Garibaldi 60 years
earlier. Once a passionate and vigorous man, part of
Giuseppe died along with his wife on that fateful day.

Giuseppe's grandson Renato (Paulo Betti) has been
entrusted by the family to run the pasta factory that
Giuseppe and Caterina started when they first arrived
from Italy. Renato, however is a terrific gourmet chef
but is short on ideas on how to run a successful
business. Renato's passion lies in cooking pasta, not
making profits. To this end, Renato is now forced to
sell the family business to a group of Italian
investors in order to avoid bankruptcy.

Renato's son Stefano (Tiago Real) has been attending
business school, however, and has returned home
full of ideas on how to save the family business and
make it profitable again. But Renato dismisses his
son's ideas without even listening to them -- further
driving a wedge between him and his family.

For Renato, however, things just keep getting worse.
One of his greatest pleasures is in flying, and that's
just what he'd be doing if it weren't for the
pressures he's facing at home and at work. With his
wife
seeking a divorce, his loss of self respect and the
loss of his grandfather's approval, Renato is near the
end of his rope. His daughter Patty (Gabriela Duarte)
who has been attending law school has one more
surprise for her father -- she would rather be an
actress than a lawyer!

Amid the commotion and deterioration of his family,
Giuseppe is faced with his own questionable sanity.
Is Sofia really the reincarnation of his dead wife?
Why has she come back now? When Giuseppe consults
his friend, confidante and personal physician Dr. Enzo
(Paulo Autran) about the possibility of the
reincarnation of Caterina, he gets only mixed
messages.

As Sofia becomes more intimate with the family, she
involves herself more in their lives. She and Renato
take a trip in his ultralight to the old pasta
factory. There, she helps him recall his heritage as
well as the
tradition and importance of the family business. She
also encourages Patty to pursue her dream of
becoming an actress and to join an acting troupe.

But for Giuseppe, Sofia's presence is dredging up
painful memories of the past. He recalls the
circumstances that led to her death -- it was rumored
that she was going to run away with the pilot of the
plane. She, in fact, went on that fateful plane ride
only to make him jealous. She mistakenly believed that
he was in love with another woman.

In the end, it is Sofia as the reincarnation of
Caterina who not only preserves the traditions of the
past but
also helps the family to actualize their own dreams
and aspirations. No longer tied to the past, each of
them comes to the realization that life is too tenuous
to live at the expense of one's own passions.

Brazilian director Ricardo Bravo has fashioned a rare
kind of film, a heart-tugger that completely immerses
the viewer and moves you to tears. Oriundi is an
utterly charming love story that is funny,
poignant and tragic at the same time. The film's
strong familial undercurrents are handled with
extraordinary delicacy and never feel contrived.

Award-winning screenwriter Marcos Bernstein (Central
Station and Terra Estrangeira) has written a
heartwarming and touching screenplay that is filled
with love, courage and sacrifice. It is a film that
awakens in us the most basic of our emotions, even as
it echoes the importance of preservation of family
-- often at the expense of our past. This
life-affirming drama is full of rich tradition and
human tragedy.

Oriundi was filmed entirely on location in the
picturesque city of Curitiba, a city of immigrants in
the south of Brazil. Like the city itself, is a film
that not only celebrates the passion of its
cultural history and the immigrant people who came
from distant shores to make a better life, but it is

mindful of the future and its destiny.

Oriundi is a love story that reflects on the
heartaches of loneliness and painful life experiences,

Alfred M. Zappala finds the stereotypes of Italian people, specifically
Sicilians, who are showcased on television shows such as “The Sopranos,”
repugnant
and he wanted to do something that would show people the beauty of Sicilian
culture.

Pride in his heritage and a number of trips to the island, where he sampled
many of the foods he offers, helped him decide to open All Things Sicilian in
Lawrence, Mass.

That store opened roughly a year ago, and has done so well, Zappala decided
to expand his business by opening a second store, at 433 Amherst St. in Nashua.

“I wanted to do something to fight against the stereotype of
Italian-Americans these programs have created,” Zappala said. “They do an
enormous disservice
to Italian-Americans and they make being Sicilian a stigma. They portray them
as thugs and that is totally not the case. I wanted to counteract that.”

gourmet Sicilian foods and cultural items.

Zappala, an Andover, Mass.-based lawyer for many years, approached a number
of his friends once he hit upon the idea of opening a store offering Sicilian
products.

Many of the friends were doctors and lawyers, who along with Zappala, wanted
to invest in something tangible after the losses all experienced investing in
the stock market.

Zappala said it was a chance for him to showcase Sicily's culture.

“It is a place that is rich with tradition, and we have not just food from
Sicily, but many cultural artifacts, cookbooks and collectibles.”

Most of the store, indeed, is filled with table after table of a wide variety
of food products – bread, olive oil, vegetable spreads, pasta and spaghetti
sauce to name a few. The store also carries Sicilian cookbooks and travel
books, puppets and lava from Mount Etna, still an active volcano.

In Sicily, puppets are popular and have been for hundreds of years because
puppets could say things, particularly political commentary, Zappala said. “
Puppets are free to say things and they can't get in trouble,” he said.

At All Things Sicilian, the puppets are replicas of knights in medieval
times. In Sicily, he said, some people collect highly detailed puppets that go
for
as much as $2,000 and $3,000 apiece.

Because the store has all these products in one place, he has found that its
overall effect on immigrants from Sicily can sometimes be overwhelming.

“We have had a number of old-timers who have come into the Lawrence store,
stand in the doorway, look around and then burst into tears,” he said. After
all, there are 30 million Americans of Italian descent in the United States, and
12 million are of Sicilian ancestry, Zappala said.

He makes sure the interior of the stores evokes a rustic, Italian feel. In
the Nashua store, one wall has a hand-painted map of Sicily, with key cities and
towns, and another wall has rolling hills of the Sicilian countryside.

Zappala, who now has dual citizenship in the United States and Italy, spends
a number of months in Sicily, working with companies that make the products
his stores carry.

He has taken a three-year leave of absence from his law practice to launch
his new business, although he is practicing law in conjunction with an Italian
partner in Sicily.

Zappala works with about 15 Italian companies that make Sicilian products,
and is helped by the Italian government in finding good suppliers.

“We're helping their economy through buying products from all over the island,
” Zappala said.

New Jersey Italians Outraged at Budget
Elimination of Italian Commission

Dear Editor:

I am outraged and completely disappointed that the Legislature and Governor
have moved to dismantle the Italian and Italian American Heritage Cultural and
Educational Programs Commission while at the same time they fund $10 million
to guarantee loans so Hollywood can make Italian mob movies. � Twice in the
past three years the Commission's budget has been reduced to zero. � I surveyed
Italian-American organizations and found that Italian-Americans are extremely
disturbed by the elimination of funding for the Commission. � It is totally
disrespectful of the largest ethnic group in the State that it must beg for a
couple of hundred thousand dollars in a $27 billion budget. �

The Commission's work includes developing a K through 12 educational
curriculum to be used in our elementary and secondary schools, sponsoring
statewide
heritage and cultural events and creating an Institute of Italian Studies at
Rutgers' University. � This work will be brought to an end on June 30, 2003, if
funding is not reinstated.
