Subject: Miami consulate questions

Dear List,

I wondered if anyone out there has successfully completed their applications
through the MIami consulate. I saw some old messages from Jill about trying to
make appointments and such, but I never saw the end of that thread. I will be
moving to that consulate's jurisdiction in the very near future, and since I'm
still waiting on a document from Italy that the Chicago consulate is requiring
(my g-g-father's first wife's death certificate), I haven't actually completed
the application there. I assume that means I'm going to have to start over with
the new consulate in Miami.

Has anyone successfully completed their applications?
Who is the contact person to whom I should address my application materials?
Are there any weirdly specific requirements anyone has heard of Miami requiring
that other consulates do not?

Thanks,

Lyn Hunter

Hi Lyn,

I had my appointment in Miami last August and all went well. My citizenship was approved a little over a month after I submitted all my documents! I believe most people meet with Virginia Valore at the consulate in Miami, but another woman named Daniella actually took my documents. There didn't seem to be any odd requirements at the time that I applied, but who knows what may have happened in a year. I do know that in order to apply for your passport now, you actually have to go to the consulate because I believe they need to fingerprint you there. When I got my passport, I was able to do everything by mail.

Anyway, dealing with the Miami consulate was fairly pleasant. Even though it's impossible to get through on the telephone, they are pretty good about answering email if you send them a specific question. Good luck with your application!

Best,
Jill

PS-- You must make your Miami appointment through Abtran as outlined on the consulate web site.

Hi all,

I finally have all my required documentation + apostilles. I was all ready to
find a translator. Then I looked closely at the documents as the Chicago
consulate suggests you do. There is some piece of information to be corrected
on each of the documents. Did anyone else come across this? Did you make the
corrections with the originating agencies, have the documents re-issued and
re-apostilled? Or did they just take them as is knowing that sometimes mistakes
are made?

As an example, the worst is my grandmother's marriage certificate. Her age,
birthplace and mother's first name are all incorrect (as it was a shotgun
wedding, presumably she was protecting certain facts from her soon-to-be
spouse).

Thanks in advance for your comments,

Kate

YES, I looked VERY close and caught all but ONE of the incorrect, and had
them fixed before. My father did not have a birth certificate and I had one
MADE. My mother used her first NAME on her Marriage Certificate and later on MY
birth certificate she used her SECOND name. But I had her birth certificate from
DENMARK and it had all 4 of her names. BUT, I changed my BIRTH certificate after
the Consulate accepted my mother BIRTH certificate from DENMARK anyway.
It took TWO years to get my Grandfather Grandmother marriage from Italy. ONE
year for my Grandfathers birth certificate.
I became an Daul Citizen in APRIL and still waiting for me and my wife Birth
certificate and Marriage certificate from ITALY.
    Good luck.

My original appointment was in May 2009 and I have spent the last year and a
half furnishing corrections and regularly being asked for more. I believe that
I have now satisfied all of the New York consulate's requests and am in the
"waiting period" - wondering if my application is really complete - or not - and
hoping that I'll get an email any minute telling me I can apply for my Italian
passport. I know of one person who got her "good news" email within 18 days,
and another who heard after about a month. The consulate had suggested that I
should be hearing something within 2 months once my application is finalized
(which would be next week).

I am wondering if anyone in this group has gotten their Italian citizenship
through the New York consulate and how long it took to hear from them once your
application was complete. Anything else you'd like to share regarding the
process through the New York Italian consulate would be welcome.

Thanks!

I am planning to apply for dual citizenship in the near future and am still in
the process of obtaining documentation. I have found my great-grandfathers name
spelled a few different ways and my grandfather is named 'Gennaro Saglioccolo'
on his birth certificate but his name appears as 'Jerry Salucco' on my mother's
birth certificate. The problem that I've run into is that in Massachusetts you
can use any name you want as long as it is NOT used for unlawful purposes
(Commonwealth v. Lowell, 1977). How do I satisfy the Italian Consuls
requirements while staying within the laws of my state? Anyone with information?

You'll have to check with the consulate to find out what they want.  You may very well have to have your great-grandfather's US records amended to correct the spelling to the original Italian.

Your mother will probably have to amend her own birth cert so that her father's
name matches his name on his own birth cert. How is your GF's name spelled on
his marriage and death certs and on your mother's marriage cert?

What I had to do, prove everything. My father had no birth certif, I had one
made but, had to prove he was born in USA. My mother used one name on her
marriage and another on MY birth, ( i could not change the marriage but, changed
on my birth (i have mother birth from denmark) also need proof of mothers name.
But mother birth certif was good enough, because it listed all her names, 1st
name 2nd name 3rd name and last name. Or two middle names.

good luck

Massachusetts won't amend a vital record unless it's a misspelling or wrong
date. Common law name changes are the name the person used on a regular basis
and cannot be changed. Apparently you can use the name Mickey Mouse in
Massachusetts and not have it be a problem unless you use it for fraudulent
reasons. Also, the biggest problem with GGF's documentation is his
naturalization papers which absolutely cannot be changed. Thanks Anyway Ed.
Anyone from Mass who may have dealt with this care to jump in?

You'll need to find out from the consulate.  They are the only ones who can tell you.  They've gone through the process with other Mass. residents who have had similar problems.

The Detroit consulate says, they will not write to Sellia, they have already

they will not write to the Detroit consulate.
Sellia CZ has my Jus sanguinis, and all paper work acording to Detroit

Why do these people get voted in office there?
SO what GIVES?

Wow!  “Satisfied customers” of this guy are turning up everywhere.  He must be the busiest attorney in Italy.  Buyer beware!

I have already spent lots of money for my italian citizenship, why not a little
more?

So if any other ATTORNEYS wish to get my papers, email a price. As it stands, I
need 6 copies each, one for each child of mine. MUST come from the Sellia CZ
government.

Also, if you don't think I will pay, you can ask, Gabriella Bozza Einaga

I got my jure sanguinis 2010 April 14th, they have the papers from Detroit
consulate to Sellia CZ, but Davide Zicchinella refuse to do his job.

So if paying an attorney to get my stuff, then maybe Davide Zicchinella will
not be re-elected when they can not do there job.

A group of us are hoping to initiate a dual-language Italian immersion program
within a public school (ideally here in Brooklyn). With close to 100
dual-language programs citywide, there's not a single one in Italian. In order
to initiate a new program, however, we have to prove the DOE and school
principals that there is sufficient demand and that we are able to fill seats. I
have created a FB page and a survey in order to gauge what the interest actually
is and to be able to provide concrete figures to the decision-makers. If you're
interested in sending your kids to a program like this, please join the group
and complete the survey. Needless to say, native Italian-speaking children are
critical to the program (as well as teachers!), but we are also interested in
hearing from people who would be interested in enrolling their children in the
program as Anglophones, so please pass this info along to anyone who might find
it interesting. Here are the links:

Thanks!

Christina

Ed/Peter,
My wife applied for Italian citizenship through me, I received mine a few years ago. My citizenship was granted at the consulate in Philadelphia. Being hers is through marriage, it has to go through the Ministero in Rome. The Philadelphia consulate originally told us that the process would take around 9 months. This coming May will make 2 years, so far nothing. I contacted the Philadelphia consulate and they said it is out of their hands and all we could do was wait. We are visiting Italy this coming July, it would be nice if she received it by then. Has anyone experienced this kind of thing before? Any info would help. Grazie, Carmine.

It usually takes 2 years, not 9 months, so your wait is not unusual. To be precise, Rome legally has 2 years to make a decision on her application.

Grazie, Malcolm. I don't know why the consulate told me about 9 months. Hopefully my wife will have it by the time we take our trip at the end of June.
