Jai Srimannarayana,

This short article is based on HH Sri Jeeyar Swamijis discourse. It initially
appeared on JET Melbourne souvenir which was released during the JET Melbourne
charity dinner event held last year August. Just sharing with all our bagvath
bandhus.

Thanks,
Prakash Ramanujadasa

Ramayana & Numeric Systems (This short article is based on HH Sri Jeeyar
Swamijis discourse)

Any one who has little entry or knowledge on vedic scriptures know
that the scriptures talk on very large astronomical figures. Did you ever wonder
how vast those numbers were? Then read on -

In Sri Ramayana, Sri Rama wages a war on Ravana with his vanara sena (army of
monkeys). Before the war commences Ravana calls upon his statistician ministers
Sa:rana and Suka  and orders them to go in disguise and get the details of
Rama's army. They go in disguise but will get caught by vanaras, later they
surrender to Rama and tell their real purpose of their visit. Rama orders one of
his minister to take them around the army and to give all the details they
wanted. Having got the details they go back to Ravana before giving the exact
figure of the opponents army they say 'O King Ravana, ten thousand cores make
one sankam. Hundred thousand sankams make one maha sankam. Hundred thousand maha
sankams make one brindam. Hundred thousand brindams make one padmam. Hundred
thousand padmams make one maha padmam. Hundred thousand maha padmams make one
karvam. Hundred thousand karvams make one samudram. Hundred thousand samudrams
make one o:gam. Hundred thousand o:gams make one mahougamu. On this there
battalion is thousand crores, hundred sankams, thousand mahasankams, hundred
brindams, thousand maha brindams, hundred padmams, thousand maha padmams,
hundred karvams, hundred samudrams, hundre mahougams.Which turns out to be

100,00000,00000,00100,00100,01000,00100,01000,01000,01001,0000,000,000

In Sanskrit when they want to say a number they start with least significant
digit. For instance to say ‘108 names’ in English we say it's ˜Hundred and
Eight names' but in Sanskrit we say starting from eight i.e ˜Ashtotthara Satha
na:amavali'. The same style we can observe it above. Vedic scriptures reveal
many secrets even not known to the modern man.

FOR PICTURES AND RECORDED VIDEO’S PLEASE VISIT WWW.JETUSA.ORG

http://chinnajeeyar.org/jetusa/content/events/summer2011trip/blog/

As always with the divine blessings of our Acharya His Holiness Sri Sri Sri Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji,  JET Washington DC Chapter is blessed to host a weeklong events.

JET DC is thankful to Tejaswi & Saikantha Lakshmi Raparla and their sons Yasaswi & Pranava for hosting our Swamivaru and parivaram.

Many Thanks to Indira Vinjamuri and Neetha Metpally for running our Prajna with around 140 students in 4 centers. Heartfelt Thanks to all Prajna teachers who stood as a backbone for our JET and always greatful for their dedication and passion in teaching students our culture and traditions.

Kudos to Prasadam team who relentlessly provided prasadam with utmost love and care to all (including allergy free prasadam) in all events throughout the year and during our Swamivaru visit to DC.

Publicity team – without this team, it would have been very difficult to spread the word about our local activities. Thanks to all your efforts.

Without Setup, Cleanup, Flower garlands, Video Live streaming, Pooja material preparation volunteers the events wouldn’t have been so smooth. Thank you and You all are amazing.

Monday June 21st 2011: Welcome H.H. Sri Sri Sri Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji from Boston. Sri Paada Pooja by our host Sriman Tejaswi and Saikantha Lakshmi Raparla residence.

Tuesday June 22nd 2011: Samasrayanams in the morning and “Meet and Greet” with several community service representatives in the evening. Purpose of this meeting is to bring awareness of our motto “Serve all Beings as Service to God” to a new and larger audience. Thanks to Dr.Reena garu who worked towards this event along with several other team members.

Wednesday June 23rd 2011: JET DC arranged “Volunteers Meet and Greet” in the evening at Sriman Gunderao and Vidya Siripuram residence. Over 70 new volunteers have joined the force with so much enthusiasm and made the weeklong Swamivaru visit to VA/DC a memorable one.

Thursday June 24th 2011: Day 1 - Personality Development Spiritual Camp based on Bhagavad Githa and Ramayanam started at Floris Elementary School in Herndon VA from 8:00am to 4:00pm.

7:00pm to 9:00pm – Public discourse on “Journey of Atma” a powerpoint presentation was presented followed by Q&A session at Reston Community Center.

Friday June 25th 2011: Day 2 Camp continued from 8:00am to 4:00pm.

Evening 7:00pm to 9:00pm public discourse on “Sri Vishnu Sahasranama Vaibhavam” was enjoyed by several hundreds of devotees. Thanks to Ashburn team for making this an enjoyable evening at Stone Hill Middle School.

Saturday June 26th 2011: Day 3 Camp continued from 8:00am to 4:00pm.

Evening 7:00pm to 9:00pm public discourse on “Ramayana Rahasyam” at Richmond Temple was enjoyed with a large devoted crowd. Richmond devotees were very happy that JET Washington DC has arranged an evening after 7 years. Thanks to Sriman Raj Mannar ji our JET member and Sriman Sanjay Thirunagari from Temple committee worked within a week span and made this evening an extremely memorable one.

Sunday June 27th 2011: Day 4 Camp ended by 1:30pm. Kids and adults left the camp deeply saddened. Many devotees wanted to sign up for next year camp if we conduct this again. VT Seva volunteers invited Sri Swamivaru and students to plant over 85 flower plants at Floris Elementary School.

Evening 6:30 to 9:30pm - 6 Day events concluded with Kalasa Pooja Sri Lakshmi Narayana Vratham.

Our Summer camp students presented what they experienced during the 4 day camp.

JET Circle and all our Teachers, Members, Volunteers and all our Sponsors were honored by H.H. Sri Sri Sri Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji.

For the first time ever under the divine guidance of our Sri Swamivaru JET DC is honored to conduct “Kalasa Pooja and Sri Lakshmi Narayana Vratham”.  Pooja material was packed with utmost attention. Almost 30 items were packed Including “Cheruku mukkalu”. Devotees enjoyed the Vratham while Sri Swamivaru was explaining each and every single step.

Along with Kalasam a picture frame was provided to all devotees with Sri Mantram and 2 slo:kams. All were requested to chant the slo:kams atleast 11 times each day which takes approximately 3 to 4 minutes. Every day or once a week either Friday or Saturday devotees are advised to put dollar a day or more depending on their wellbeing. During our Deepavali, Goda Kalyanam & Sri Sita Rama Kalyana Mahothsavam devotees are requested to bring the amount collected in the Kalasam to the event. All the amount donated to JET USA/DC is tax deductible. The proceedings will be utilized to preserve our Vedic Schools and Libraries in India (Bharath).

With tears many devotees with a great difficulty gave a warm send off to Sri Swamivaru and his parivaram to New Jersey.

With the blessings of our Swamivaru, JET Washington DC team has showed dignity and integrity by working together and stood as role model chapter for 2 years in a row. Humbly JET DC team is ready to serve the community with great joy and looking forward to host many more events like this in future.

Always in the Service of Lord and Acharya

Serve all Beings as Service to God

Worship your Own, Respect All

Jai Srimannarayana
 Priya Sunithaji,

What a marvelous thought and execution of your ideas for a divine garden filled with Holiest of Holy plant Tulsi, especially for our beloved Acharya, at His head quarters in NJ. It brings tears to my eyes to reflect on your beautiful heart, dedicated soul and skilful hands.

If you have time I would like to share another episode/anology from our purvacharyas "Guru Parampara". Sri Ananth Azhvan (AA) did such a great thing for His Acharya Swami Ramanuja. While doing vyakyanam for the 10 pasurams :Ozhivil Kalamellam", understanding Acharya's divine heart Sri AA offered to go to Thirumala and made gardens for Emperumaan Thiruvankatamudayaan. In those days only wild animals roamed the Hills and people were afraid to be the inhabitants of such dangerous place, so nobody to do pushya kainkaryam for the Lord. Only with the help of His wife who was in a stage of advanced pregnancy, Sri AA cultivated the lands and made a beautiful garden. He even refused the help of God who came in the form of a little boy. Later He became the father-in -law for the same Lord.

Our Acharya has great respect for nature and every one of His Ashrams in India boasts a grand garden. BUT NOBODY SO FAR HAS DONE THIS FOR HIM IN USA UNTIL YOU..

You are a true inspiration to me. In my mind you have joined the ranks of Perazhvar, Thondar adi podi Azhvar and Sri Ananth Azhvaan.
HH blessed the Tulasi Garden with the name "BRINDAVANI".

Hope and pray that you will continue to care for her and nuture her and be a motivator for others.

O:m asmad gurubhyo:namaha!

Sri Raghunandana Parabramhane Namaha!
Srimathe Ramanujaya Namaha!

Jai srimannarayana to you all!

After a long time I am resuming the translation of the Ba:laka:nda
tathvadeepika from where I left earlier.

This is the 26th Sarga.

(So far we read that Viswamithra instructed Sri: Rama to go ahead and kill
Tha:taka without any apprehension that he had to kill a woman. He even cited
many instances wherein the kings resorted to kill the evil women for the welfare
of the mankind.)

Sri Rama heard to Viswamithra’s words spoken with strong conviction.
Offering him obeisance, Dasaratha’s son spoke thus:

‘pithurvachana nirde:sa:th pithurvachana gourava:th|

Vachanam kausika sye:thi karthavya mavisankaya: ||

“Since it is the instruction of my father Dasaratha; because I respect my
father’s words the most; as it is the order of my guru Viswamithra, though
killing a woman is forbidden, I oblige without any hesitation. In the assembly
of many elders in Ayodhya, my father had ordered me not to dishonor the commands
of Sage Viswamithra. So obeying my father’s directive and honoring Bramhavettha
Viswamithra’s orders I shall kill this Thataka. There is no room for
hesitation.”

‘go:bramhana hitha:rtha:ya de:sasya:sya sukha:yacha|

Thava chaiva: prame:yasya vachanam karthu mudyathaha||’

Sri Rama said, “I shall follow Viswamithra’s order for the well being of the
cows and the bramhins and for the prosperity of the kingdom.” He took up his bow
and pulled its string. Its sound reverberated in the whole world. All beings
living in the Tha:taka forest were scared. The baffled Demon Thataka ran in the
direction of the sound. Rama saw her tall and fat awkward form.He told
Lakshmana, “Lakshmana! Did you see the frightening figure of this yaksha lady?
It would surely shatter the weak people’s hearts. She possesses lots of magical
powers. First I will cut off her ears and nose and make her
run away from here. I don’t feel like killing a woman. I will rather chop off
her legs making her immobile.” As Rama was saying this, Tha:taka ran towards him
bursting with anger, waving her hands uncontrollably, yelling at the top of her
voice.

(To be contd…)

Jai Srimannarayana!

Sri Raghunandana Parabramhane namaha!

(It is the translation of Sri U.Ve. Sriman Sribhashyam Appalacharyaswamy's
Thathvadeepika of Balakanda.)

On seeing Tha:taka’s brutal attempt to overpower Rama, Viswamithra got
worried that no harm should ever happen to him and he at once blessed Sri Rama
and Lakshmana,
“swasthi raaghava yo:rasthu jayam chaiva: bhya bha:shatha”

“Let auspicious things happen to Sri Rama and Lakshmana. Let the victory be
theirs.” Earlier he himself had revealed that Sri Rama was none other than the
Supreme Lord himself. He very well knew that he alone can end Tha:taka. Still
the influence of love is far more superior to the power of knowledge. It
surpasses jna:na. Viswa:mithra, worried about their safety, prays that good
things should happen to Rama and Lakshmana. Tha:taka forcibly blew the dust off
the ground, thus blinding the vision of Rama and Lakshmana. She vanished using
her magical powers and showered a rain of stones on them. This infuriated Rama.
He retaliated this showering a continuous rain of arrows. Angry Tha:taka
pounced on them. Sri Rama paid her back cutting off her two hands. She got tired
and moved to and fro howling in pain. Lakshmana cut off the yaksha lady’s nose
and ears. She transformed into different forms and rained rocks on them. Sage
Viswamithra observed them both struggling hit by the rocks. He instructed them,
“Don’t show mercy. Don’t hesitate that she is a woman. She is malicious. Her
mind is corrupt. Her character is blemished. She is a cruel yaksha lady. Her
mystical powers would rise further with the night fall. All the ra:kshasa:s’
strengths increase in the evening.” Rama listened to the sage. Though she was
invisible and raining stones on them, Rama could trace her using his sense of
sound and shot arrows at her and stopped her. Undaunted, screaming loudly
Tha:taka attacked them. She started coming onto them like a thunder. Sri Rama
immediately shot an arrow into her heart. Next moment she fell to the ground
dead. Indra hailed Srirama watching that ferocious figure of Tha:taka falling to
the ground. Devathas worshipped Sri Rama.

(To be contd.....)

by "Theertha Goshti"

So far I was able to attend a couple of days. I am planning to attend the last
three days of Deeksha which is ending on September 12th. The hall is packed with
devotees.

Sreemathe Ramanujaya Namaha!

Respected Bhagavatha Bandhus,

We have been looking intothe number series articles, after the Number 8, the
following comes to tell usthe glories of No 9.  No 9 has a significant role
with relation to our scriptures & sampradhaya:-

a)Chakravarthy Thirumagan Sri Rama was born on Navami (9) Thithi, the thithi,
which is usually avoided for doing subha karyams.  But when Emperumaan was about
to incarnate, the Navami Thithi came running & cleansed itself.

b)According to Puranic cosmography, the entire cosmos is  divided into seven
concentric island (sapta-dvipa vasumati), among them Jambudvipa forms the
innermost concentric island which consists of 9
kandaas, they are :-

1)Ilavrutum kandaam

2)Bhadrasvam kandaam

3)Harivarsham kandaam

4)Ketumaalam kandaam

5)Ramyakam kandaam

6)Hiranyam kandaam

onpathu vasal in tamil

Explains Thirumangai Alwar in Periya Thirumozhi (1-6-9)

Meaning "Oh lord of Naimisaranyam this body is made up of flesh, and to give it
a structure & to hold it, the bone foundations are made and it is covered with
hair and it has 9 holes, when my soul departs from this house, I take refuge
only in your Thiruvadi, due to your grace, I took refuge in them.

d)Navaratnas are 9 gems which are 1)Manikkam 2)Muthu

3) Pavazham 4)Maragadham 5)Pushparagam 6)Vairam 7)Neelam 8)Gomedhakam
9)Vaiduryam,
These stones are very valuable, but they are another set of priceless
navarathnas which Swamy Ramanuja blessed us with, his  9 great works they are:-

1)Vedartha Sangraham - The resume of Vedantha

2)Shree Bhashyam - Commentary on Bramha sutras

3)Vedantha Saara - (essence of Vedantha) an appendix to Sri Bashyam

4)Vedantha Deepam - (the light of Vedantha) another appendix to Sri Bhashya

5)Gita Bhashya - his commentary of Bhagavath Geetha

6)Nithya Grantham - About the day to day activities to be perfomed by all Sri
Vaishnavas

7)Vaikunta Gadyam - describing in great detail Sri Vaikuntam & recommending
meditating it.

8)Sri Ranga Gadyam - a prayer of surrender to the feet of Shri Ranganatha

9)Saranagathi Gayam - - dialogue between Ramanuja and Piratti and Perumal where
Swami  petitions  Sri Lakshmi to recommend Lord to give him grace both Perumal &
Piratti accept swami's surrender

e)Nava Tirupathi Temples, these are 9 divya desams, which are
collectively called Nava Tirupathy

1)Alwar Thirunagari/Thirukurugoor  (birth place of Nammalwar)
2)Thirukoolur  (birth place of Madhurakavi Alwar)
3)Then Thirupeerai
4)Sri/Thiru Vaikuntam
5)Thirukkulandai
6)Thiruppulingudi
7)Thiruvaragunamangai
8) & 9)  Two temples at Thirutholaivillimangalam about 100 yards of each other
are counted as one for the purpose Divya desam & are known as Irattai Tirupathi
)

The specialties about these temples are:-

i) Mangalasasanams done only by Nammalwar

ii)These  are found on either side of Thamarabarani river

iii)In all these Nava Thirupathi Divya Desams, there are 2 thayars found.
iv)Each of the nava grahas is said to have prayed to the emperumaan of these 9
Divya desams

DIvya Desams
Thayars & Graha

1)Thirukurugoor - Aadinatha Nayaki & Kurugoor Nayaki - Guru

Varagunamangai Thaayar- Chandran

8 & 9) Thirutholaivillimangalam

a)Srinivasar/Deva Piran --Alarmelmanga Sri Padmavathi - Rahu
b)Aravindalochanar/Senthamarai Kannan --

Karunthadanganni  thayar & Bhoo devi - Ketu

10)They are said to 9 Sanskrit grammar works called "Nava
Vyakarnas", all these were mastered by Siriya Thirvadi (Hanuman)
hence got the title "Nava Vyakarna Pandithar". Hanuman is said
to have learnt this from his guru "Surya Dev" the Sun god.

g)In Kumara Samhita, Sri Agastya Maharishi speaks about the benefits of 9 day
(Navaham) Parayanam of Srimadh Ramayana Sundara Kandam, which bestows all
benefits and boons to the reader of this great Itihasam as per prescribed rules.

h)Prahalada Alwan one among
great thirumal adiyars, has propagated 9 types
of bhakthi, through the foll sloka:-

"Sravanam Keerthanam
Vishnoo Smaranam Padha Sevanam,

Archanam Vandhanam Dhaasyam Sakhyam Aathma Nivedhanam,

Ithi Pumsamarpitha Vishnow Bakthi Chetnavalakshana,

Kriyathey Bhagavath Yattha Dhan Manye Atheetham Utthamam"

1)Sravanam :- Listening to Emperumaan'stories & kalyana gunas like King
Parikshith.

2)Keerthanam :- Chanting his thiru namam like Sage Suka Bramham.

3)Smaranam :- Just like Thila dhara (continuous oil pouring) nama sankeertanam
should be done like Prahaladha Alwan.

4)Paadha Sevanam : - Worshipping Emperumaan in all temples, Piratti shows us
the way for this.

5)Archanam :- Doing Archanai to emperumaan with Fragnant fresh flowers, like
Brigu Chakravarthy.

6)Vandhanam : - "I have no gathi (refuge),only you should grace with
nargathi(sreyas) saying so we have to take refuge only in HIM like Mahan
Akroorar.

7)Daasyam:- Doing Kainkaryam to Emperumaan for his (emperumaan's) pleasure, like
Siriya Thiruvadi Hanuman

8)Sakhyam:- Making friendship with HIM, & act favorably for him to gain his
friendship like Sugriva to Lord Rama and Arjuna to Lord Krishna.

9)Aathma Nivedhanam:- To dedicate our soul & belongings to the Lord, just like
Mahabali

Thus our Alwars and Poorvacharyas followed the above 9 types of Bakthi

i)Nidhi means treasure, they are said to be 9 of them(navanidhi), but for sri
vaishnavas, the real "nidhi" is "sannidhi" of emperumaan, which ultimately
grants us "srinidhi" which is none other than "neengaadha kainkarya selvam"

to be continued..............

Sri Gurubhyo:namaha!
Jeeyar thiruvadigale saranam!

Our A:ndal aspires that none should miss the association with the Lord. She
wants to pull everyone into this fold. She always preferred a ‘goshti’. She went
round each and every house with full devotion and inspiration collecting the
girls to pray to Lord collectively in the cold early hours of the day. We follow
her foot -steps.

We follow our leader, our guide, our acharya to reach our goal. We follow
dharma. If something deplorable happens in the society it is our minimum
responsibility to raise our voice against it and see that it stops. No sensible
being should ever turn away his head and remain passive. We know when Arjuna
turned into a mood of inactivity, Lord Krishna teaches him – to act and
discharge his duty keeping the fruits of result on the shoulders the Lord. So
action is very important and the erring should be taught a lesson and be shown
the right direction.

Selfishness drags one away from the correct path. Sometimes it makes one passive
ignoring the main objective. Real devotees never think, ‘I got what I want. Why
should I bother about others?’ This is not our mentality. This is not what
scriptures taught us.

A guru takes care of the eternal welfare of the disciple. Gurus never
bother about the comfort, necessities, fame or defame of their selves. Truegurus
always strive to uplift the beings around them. It is the duty of the disciples
to take care of the needs of their acharyas. It is their responsibility to take
action if any unsocial elements come in the way of their progressing path by
trying to malign their name using the free advanced media facilities.

Let us all raise our voice and express our displeasure and anger at the T.V.
channels mainly the Studio N channel for its vengeful wrong propagation by
filing the petition of - SAVE DHARMA – savedharma.org.

Acha:rya thiruvadigale saranam!!

Unmindful of the chill, Go:da:de:vi woke up the young go:pika:s one after the
other, to take them along with her to perform the ‘thiruppa:vai’ vratham to
attain Lord Krishna, the ultimate. Thiruppavai, the essence of Veda teaches us
this concept.

Know dharma, practice dharma, preach dharma and protect dharma. In turn it will
protect you, safeguard you, evolve you give you prosperity and eternal bliss.

We are His (Bhagavan) property, this life is for His sake and it is HIS. He gave
us Sa:sthra:s and then acha:rya:s to make us understand them. Sasthras teach us
dharma – what to do and what not to do.

Even if we don’t do ‘what we have to do’- not much harm is done. But if we do –
what we should not do- it is a grave sin. We become unpardonable sinners. When
some vicious, crooked minded sadistic gangs malign our beloved Acharya, what
should we think of them? What is it they are doing….
Shouldn’t we react? Of course, we should react and respond since we have brains
and thinking power. It doesn’t take much time.

Go to – savedharma.org and sign the petition.

Take the inspiration from Sri: Go:dade:vi and join all your friends with you in
this noble duty.

Let us all work hard to save our dharma. Let us all pray - the ones who want to
destroy the dharma get good sense and revert back to the path of dharma. Once
again don’t forget to ask your relatives, colleagues and friends to sign the
online petition and Call the concerned officials.
