Abib Report 2000 (#3)

The Abib has been found!!! On April 4, 2000 an expedition
searching for Abib found 3 plots of barley in the area of
Jericho which were Abib. The coming New Moon will begin the
"Month of the Abib", which is the First Month of the
Biblical year. The moon is expected to be seen on April 5
in the evening, although this awaits confirmation by
observers. More details of the Abib expedition and the New
Moon Report will follow in the next few days.

May Hashem be with you,

New Moon Report
April 2000

On April 5, 2000 the New Moon was not sighted by any of the
observers from Israel. It was very hazy all over Israel
apparently caused by dust in the air, which made
the relatively slender crescent invisible to the naked eye.
However, in the past the moon has been visible under similar
astronomical conditions. This means that were it not for
the
dust on the horizon, the moon would have been visible.
Therefore, we will be observing Rosh Hodesh (New
Moon Day) on the evening of April 5 and the day of April 6.

Rosh Hodesh Sameach (Happy New Moon Day) and Shana Tovah
(Happy New Year)!

More on Shavuot

We are pleased to report that we recieved an overwhelmingly
positive response to the article published last week on the
upcoming Shavuot holiday. Now we are proud to present a
whole new series of articles on Shavuot, written by the late
Hacham Mordecai Alfandari, of blessed memory. In this
series of articles Hacham Alfandari discusses "The
Significance of Shavuot", the question of the "Morrow After
the Sabbath", and presents the "Classical Karaite Proofs"
for always celebrating Shavuot on a Sunday, and more. In
addition, we have created a Glossary of Shavuot Terms. We
hope you find the Shavuot Glossary a welcome guide to a
complex and difficult subject, which by its very nature is
dominated by many Hebrew terms and concepts. The new series
on Shavuot, including the Shavuot Glossary can be found at:
http://www.karaite-korner.org/light-of-israel/pentecost.shtm

A Hebrew Version of Hacham Alfandari's article on "The
Morrow After Pessach" is also available at:

Who is the Suffering Servant of Isaiah 53?

A question which the Karaite Korner often receives from
Christians and Messianics is why we do not believe in Jesus
or "Yahshua". Their reasoning seems to be that if the
Karaites had the sense to see the falsehood in the Talmud,
surely they can see that Jesus must be the Messiah. After
all, continues the Christian reasoning, Jesus' coming is
mentioned in the Tanach, isn't it?

So why is it that the Karaites "ignore" or "reject" the
"Christilogical prophecies" in the Tanach? The answer is
quite simple. The very same thing which caused the Karaites
to reject the Talmud, is what caused us to reject the New
Testament and its claims. Both works quote Biblical
passages out of context and give them interpretations
divorced from the plain and clear meaning of the text. A
case in point is the famous "Christological" passage in
Isaiah 53, which describes the suffering servant of Hashem
whom Christians identify as Jesus. Who is this suffering
servant if not Jesus? Find out in Mordecai Alfandari's
article "The Servant of YHVH" at:
http://www.karaite-korner.org/light-of-israel/servant_of_yhvh.shtml

After reading the article don't forget to leave your
thoughts at the Light of Israel.

The Biblical Basis for the New Moon

Over the years the Karaite Korner has brought you reliable New Moon
reports for the Land of Israel. This is vital information since the
Biblical Month is based on the appearance of the New Moon in that Land
of Israel. But where does the Tanach (Hebrew Bible) discuss the New
Moon? A new article on The Karaite Korner now discusses this issue
and explains the Biblical basis for observing the New Moon as the
beginning of the month in the Biblical Calendar. We also discuss the
so-called "Concealed Moon Theory" and consider whether this approach
stands the test of sound Hebrew linguistics. Learn more about the New
Moon at: http://www.karaite-korner.org/new_moon.shtml

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The People of Israel are currently facing some of the most difficult
times in over 50 years. As you read this letter the enemies of Israel
are plotting to tear away large parts of the Land of Israel and even
the chosen city of YHWH from its rightful owners. Like the
Babylonians and Assyrians of old they seek to uproot tens of thousands
of
Israelites from their homes. This is the land which the Creator of
heaven and earth Himself gave to His chosen people. The decree
regarding the Holy City is expected in the next 24-48 hours.
Therefore, we call upon all those who love the God of Israel to pray
for the peace of Israel and the unity of Jerusalem and to observe
Tuesday July 25 as a fast day. The situation we face today is no less
dangerous than that faced by our anscestors of which the prophet
spoke:

"...sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly... let them say, Spare thy
people, O YHWH, and give not thine heritage to reproach, that the
heathen should rule over them" Joel 2,15-17

In Memory of the Light of Israel

This Sunday, August 20, 2000, we will be holding a memorial in honor
of the first anniversary of the death of Hacham Mordecai Avraham

New Moon Report
August 30, 2000

On Wednesday Auguest 30, 2000 the moon was seen from Jerusalem by Nehemia
Gordon at 19:20 (sunset was observed at 19:01) and by Hen-el Brill and Bruce
Brill from Tekoa at 19:25. Since the moon was easily visible New Moon Day
will be the evening of August 30 and the day of August 31.

It is worth noting that the Rabbanites are not observing the beginning of
the month until the evening of August 31, a full 24 hours AFTER THE MOON WAS
SEEN!!! This is a clear-cut example which proves that Rabbanical
astronomical calculations do not accurately predict the visibility of the
New Moon! Usually the Rabbanite calculations give New Moon Day a day or 2
before the moon is visible but this month they gave it a day after the moon
was visible.

Rosh Hodesh Sameach (Happy New Moon Day)!

Update on Upcoming Yom Teruah Holiday

With Yom Teruah (erroneously called "Rosh Hashanah) only a couple of
days away we are in full gear with preparations for what will be an
historical New Moon observation. With the moon having 1.04%
Illumination and a Lagtime of 44 minutes we simply can not predict
with certainty whether the moon will be visible. A special group of
observers will be stationed in the Eilat area where viewing conditions
are optimal and as usual we will have observers throughout the Land of
Israel. For logistical reasons we will be unable to gather all the
reports from the various observation points on the night of the
observation, so we will be observing Yom Teruah for two days beginning
the evening of Thursday September 28, 2000. This is only because this
month is a rare occasion on which the moon is simply unpredictable.
By the following Monday we will have all the observations collected
and we will base Yom Kippur and Sukkot on the information from the
actual observations.

The Karaite Korner has teamed up with Bruce Brill, a veteran New Moon
sighter, who will be sending out a PRELIMINARY New Moon Report on
Thursday night, September 28, 2000. This report will only contain
information from some of the observation points and if the moon is not
seen from these points it still may be seen at others. So even if no
one in the preliminary report sees the moon, Yom Teruah should still
be observed beginning Thursday September 28, 2000.

New Moon Report
September 2000
Part 3

On September 28, 2000 the New Moon was seen by 3 observers looking
from the lookout point on top of Mt. Hezekiah (Har Hizkiyahu) located
a 20 minutes drive north-west of Eilat, near Mt. Uziyahu. The moon
was seen by Magdi Shamuel, Yudah Cohen, and Yosi Gaber. There were
clouds on the horizon and the moon kept moving in and out of the
clouds. Magdi was the first observer to see the moon at 18:45 and it
only remained visible for a short time. Immediately after
sighting the moon with the naked eye Magdi confirmed the observation
through binoculars. Yudah Cohen saw the New Moon a few minutes
later witht he naked eye and he was able to track it for a few
minutes. A few minutes later Magdi saw the moon again with the naked
eye. At 19:02
Yosi Gaber sighted the moon and it remained visible for a short time.
Sunset was observed at 18:26. 7 other observers present were
unsuccesful at sighting the moon.

Observers reported from various other locations throughout Israel that
the moon was not visible due to heavy cloud coverage.

The following dates of the holidays are based on the actually observed
New Moon:

Yom Kippur (Atonement) - Sunday October 8, 2000
Hag Ha-Sukkot (Booths) - Friday October 13, 2000
Shemnini Atzeret (8th Day of Assemby) - Friday October 20, 2000

Hag Ha-Sukkot - Feast of Booths

With Sukkot quickly approaching this Thursday night we have just
completed laying the date-palm roof over our Sukkah and are making
final preparations. The roof also includes willow branches, myrtle
branches, and we will add olive branches later today after we have a
chance to collect them from a nearby tree. If you don't have these
specific trees in your area to roof your Sukkah you can use other
trees that fall under the categories listed in Leviticus 23. To find

"They Say Peace Peace, When There is No Peace" Jeremiah 6,14

Like the false prophets in the time of Jeremiah, for the last seven
years the Israeli Leftists have been duping the Israeli people with
the pipe dream that we are in an age of peace. Giving away large
tracts of the Land of Israel to a veteran terrorist organization, the
PLO. But anyone that understands the Arabs, knew all this time that
despite the declaration of peace, there is no peace. All one had to
do was to listen to the PLO itself that declared in 1974 the "Stages"
Plan under which they would gain control of a small portion of the
Land of Israel and use this as a springboard to conquer the rest.
Apparently we have entered stage 2.

When the Leftists gave machine guns to the Palestine Liberation
Oragnization, they hemmed and hawed about how the guns were for
"police" use (show me a police force that needs machine guns for its
regular police!). And if even a single muzzle is pointed at Israelis,
promised Yitzhak Rabin, we will respond with a vengeance. And now
seven years later the same machine guns, paid for by Israeli and
American tax dollars, are being turned on Israelis by the Palestinian
"police" themselves. And these are not spontaneous outbursts. State-
run Palestinian television is repeatedly calling upon the Arabs to go
to the streets and attack Israeli soldiers and civilians. The ones
actually firing the guns are the "Tanzim" which is the military wing
of the PLO. Most Tanzim members are policemen during the day and at
night enter their Tanzim units where they use their police-issue M16s
and Kalashnikovs to fire on Israelis. And the orders are coming
directly from Arafat himself, as was confirmed only the other day by
the head of the Tanzim in an interview on Palestinian
state-television.

The worst part of the recent violence is the propaganda war being
raged against Israel. On the ground we are taking casualties but
winning the street battles, but being horribly defeated in the arena
of world public opinion due to a highly sophisticated Palestinian
propaganda machine. The Arabs are using the same tactics they used
during the so-called Intifanda of 1987-1993 and the Israeli powers
that be have yet to learn the lesson. Consider the following example.
CNN reported the other day that a nine-year old Palestinian girl was
shot dead by Israeli troops in Gaza during a "demonstration". What
CNN didn't mention is that Israeli troops have strict orders not to
open fire, even with rubber bullets, unless their lives are in
immediate danger. In this particular case the rampaging mob, which
the nine year old girl was a part of, was throwing Molotov Cocktails
at Israeli soldiers. A Molotov Concktail is a bottle full of gasoline
that is ignited and thrown as a bomb. Show me an army in the world
that would not open fire when its troops are being fire-bombed! The
mother that brought her child to participate in such violence should
be thrown in prison. But this is exactly what the Palestinians want.
They want the statistics to swell with dead Arab children. The 9-year
old girl has now died the death of a Shahid, a martyr, and the PLO has
received its good press. The worst part is that CNN knew the details
of the incident but only told half the story.

Another lie being spread in the news is that the Palestinian are just
throwing stones and that the Israelis are over-reacting. I have
already mentioned the live machine-gun fire by the Tanzim, which is
now a daily affair. But the truth is, that when the Palestinian mobs
throw "stones" we are not talking about pebbles but large rocks and
even boulders, which they drop from the top of roofs on passing
Israeli cars. A few days ago a Jewish driver was killed by one of
these boulders dropped from a bridge onto a highway on the road from
Haifa to Tel Aviv. This was not in some Palestinian village and the
victim was not a soldier. This was a civilian killed in an area
which, at least officially, is not under dispute! But here is the
thing the Leftists don't get yet. When the Palestinians talk about
conquering Palestine they do not only mean the so-called West Bank and
Gaza liberated by Israel in 1967. They mean Tel Aviv, Haifa, Ramla,
Ashdod, and every other Israeli city and town. They say this
outright. All one has to do is listen.

++--++--++--++--++--++--++--++--++--++--++--++--

Whose Land is it Anyway?

Throughout the Palestinian conflict I have always argued that the
Palestinians are unlawful trespassers. Even if we ignore the fact
that most Palestinian families immigrated to "Palestine" in the 19th
century from Egypt, and that the Jewish People won "Palestine" in a
war of defense, the bottom line is that the Land of Israel is ours
because YHWH gave it to us. The problem is that it seems almost silly
to argue to a Muslim Arab that the Land of Israel belongs to the
People of Israel. After all the Muslims do not even believe in the
Hebrew Bible and what do they care what our religion teaches?! Or do
they? As is well known the basis of Islam is a book known as the
Qoran. The Qoran itself recognizes that the Land of Israel belongs
permanently to the People of Israel! Thus we read in the Qoran, Surah
5:19-26 "Oh People of the Scripture... Go into the holy land which
Allah hath ordained for you.". What is important here is the
recognition by the Qoran that "Allah" (Arabic word for God) "ordained"
the Land of Israel for the People of Israel! Another significant
passage is Koran, Surah 17,104, which states: "And We (Allah) said to
the Children of Israel after him (Pharaoh): Dwell in the land; but
when the promise of the Hereafter cometh to pass we shall bring you as
a crowd gathered out of various nations." Here we see the Qoranic
promise that "Allah" will gather in the dispersed people of Israel out
of the various lands of the Diaspora. So according to the Qoran
itself, "Allah" ordained the Land of Israel for the People of Israel
and that despite the fact that the Israelites are dispersed throughout
the world, the land remains theirs and eventually they will be
returned to it! Well we are back after 2000 years and we claim our
God-given right to the Land of Israel.

But even now as I am writing this and hear the gunfire in the nearby
Arab village of Hizma, I know that the Palestinians are not going
anywhere. In the Tanach we are taught that when Israel sins, God
sends the nations to punish them (Jud 2,11-3,6). Just as the
Philistines, Assyrians, Babylonians, Romans, and Nazis were sent as a
punishment for our rebelliousness, so too the Palestinians are serving
as the "rod" of YHWH (cf. Isa 10,5). And just as the above nations
were themselves punished for being over-zealous in their mission, so
too shall the Palestinians shall be punished. But until then, we are
under the sway of the oppressor. We can fight back and defend
ourselves in the moment, but to truly free ourselves of the Philistine
barbarians we need to repent and return to YHWH. Oh Israel, abandon
your false gods and your laws of men learned by rote and return to the
Torah of YHWH today!!!

Arab "Demonstrators" Blow Up Israeli School Bus

And so it continues. Yesterday Palestinian "demonstrators" set off a
car bomb on a busy street in Hadera in the heart of Israel killing two
innocent people and permanently crippling 5 others. This followed the
blowing up of a school bus near the Jewish village of Kefar Darom only
a few days ago. Both the American CIA and Israeli Intelligence
reported solid information that the order to blow up the school bus
came directly from Arafat's inner circle and was carried out by Tanzim
agents. Two teachers were killed in the school bus bombing and 8
children were seriously wounded. Several of the children, including
two sisters, were only saved by cutting off their legs. Israel
responded by bombing the command centers of the Palestinian Authority
security forces. One Palestinian was killed in this retaliatory
attack, yet Egypt had the gall to say it was "excessive violence".
And so the lies continue. Just think about it. 2 Israeli school
teachers dead and 8 Israeli school children permanently handicapped
versus 1
dead Palestinian policeman and Israel is accused of excessive
violence!

Meanwhile the leaders of the Tanzim, the military wing of Arafat's
PLO-Fatah, declare that the Israeli retaliation will not deter them
from continuing their armed struggle. They cite the statistics of how
many Palestinian youths were killed in the riots taking place
throughout the last two months and dismiss the school bus bombing.
What they don't mention is that those Palestinian youths killed in the
riots were either throwing Molotov cocktails (gasoline fire-bombs) or
being used as human shields by Palestinian snipers hiding behind the
crowd of rioters and taking pot shots at the Israelis. This sounds
very cynical and if I had not seen two youths killed in this very
fashion in the Arab village of Hizma (just outside my window!) I might
not believe it myself. But this is the reality. Not a single
Palestinian has been killed in "demonstrations". These so-called
demonstrators are part of what the Tanzim is openly calling "the armed
struggle" to drive out the occupiers. Recently ABC television
interviewed the head of the Tanzim in the West Bank Marwan BarGuthi.
BarGuthi agreed to take the camera crew on a tour of what he called
"peaceful demonstrations". As the children lobbed their Molotov
Cocktails in clear view of the cameras, BarGuthi turned to the
American reporter and said, "You see, peaceful demonstrations".

But who could deny the Palestinians their basic human right to
political self-determination? All they want is a free Palestinian
State. So why won't Israel just pull out its forces and end the
"occupation". Well here's why. First of all, the PLO, a terrorist
organization
that claims to represent the entire Palestinian people, signed a
formal international treaty with Israel in 1993 in which the
fundamental principle was that all disputes would be solved through
negotiation and not violence. So any justification to carry out an
armed struggle to end "the occupation" was signed away by the very
leaders of this armed struggle. Secondly, the continuos acts of
terror and rioting are taking place in areas which are not under
occupation! Over the past seven years Israel has turned over every
major Palestinian city and town to the "Palestinian Authority". Daily
there are violent riots on the outskirts of Ramallah. The declared
purposes of the rioters is to end the occupation. But there is not a
single Israeli soldier in the entire town of Ramallah (that's why the
riots are on the edge of town!). This would be like a Texan blowing
up a Mexican school bus to "end the occupation" of Texas! Nightly
Palestinian
Tanzim snipers open fire on the Jewish neighborhood of Gilo from the
nearby Arab town of Beit Jalla. Yet there is not a single Israeli
soldier in all of Beit Jalla, nor is there is a single Arab in all of
Gilo, so how does this serve to "end the occupation". The problem is
that one has to listen carefully to the Arabs to understand what they
mean.

If you listen to what the Arabs actually say they are not talking
about the
so-called "occupation" of the West Bank and Gaza. The West Bank and
Gaza were areas liberated by the Israeli Defense Force in the 6-Day
War of 1967, a war of defense in which Israel fought for its very
existence and just barely survived. But the Arabs are not talking
about these lands. They are talking about the "occupation" of 1948.
In 1947 the United Nations decided that the then British Mandate of
Palestine was to be divided into a Jewish State and an Arab State. In
those days the term "Palestinian" meant a Jew who lived in Palestine
and the
Arabs were simply called "Arabs". In 1948, when the British left, the
Arabs
rejected the UN proposal to live side-by-side with a Jewish State and
decided instead to butcher the Jews. 5 Arab armies invaded and this
on top of the local Arab militias. One of the greatest miracles in
all of history then occurred, no less significant than the splitting
of the sea or the fall of the walls of Jericho. The little Jewish
community defeated the 5 Arab armies and founded the State of Israel.
The Arabs realized what they would do to us if they had won and
assuming we would do the same they fled the country. Not a single
Arab who stayed behind was killed, yet when the dust settled the
majority of the Arab population had emigrated to other countries.
Meanwhile, the Arab nations expelled their own Jewish populations and
these Jewish refugees came and replaced the Arabs who had left Israel,
often building their houses on the ruins of the abandoned Arab houses.
And this is the crux of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The reason for the recent Arab violence in not the Temple Mount or
Jerusalem. It is the so-called "refugee" issue. You see the PLO's
central demand, which Israel will never agree to, is that the Arabs
who fled Israel in 1948, or rather their descendants as it were,
should be given the "right" to "return" to Israel and settle in their
original towns and cities. What this means in practice is that the
Jewish State of Israel would be dismantled. Jewish towns all over the
country would be torn down and replaced with Arab towns. The Jewish
refugees who were kicked out of the Arab countries would again be
forced out of their homes to make way for the Arab's who voluntarily
left in 1948. When the Arabs demonstrate they do not chant and cheer
about liberating Jericho or Gaza City. These places have not had
Israeli soldiers in them for seven years! In their chants they call
for the "liberation" of Jaffa, Ashdod, Ramla, and other Jewish towns.
In other words, at this point the struggle is no longer about ending
the 1967 occupation. De facto that has ended from the Arab population
centers. The current struggle is about ending the "occupation" of
1948. As Marwan BarGuthi, the head of the Tanzim in the West Bank
recently put it, the armed struggle will not cease until they have
liberated all of Palestine from the Jordan to the Mediterranean. All
you have to do is look on a map to see what he means.

The Karaite Korner wishes everyone a peaceful and joyful Rosh Hodesh
(New Moon Day) this Tuesday Novermber 28 (beginning the evening of
Monday November 27).

New Moon Report
November 2000

On Monday November 27, 2000 the New Moon was sighted by Nehemia Gordon
and Devorah Gordon from Jerusalem. The moon was first sighted by
Nehemia at 16:50. Sunset was observed at 16:27.

Some of you asked how we knew that the moon would not be visible from
Israel on Sunday night. A technical explanation of how to predict the
visibility or invisibility of the New Moon is given at:
http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Atrium/4075/karaite_calendar.html
To put it in layman's terms, the moon was simply not large enough to
be seen on Sunday night. One of the factors which causes the moon to
be visible is its width which is measured as a percentage of its
illuminated surface facing the Earth. It is known that generally a
moon with less than 1% illumination can not be visible. This does not
mean that a moon with 1.01% illumination will automatically be visible
since at this point one must check other astronomical factors such as
Alt, Daz, Lag, etc. (see the above web site for more details). The
moon on Sunday night had an illumination of 0.47% at sunset from
Israel which means that it was definitely not visible from the Land of

For those interested, the official Report of the Eilat Expedition of
September 28, 2000 including an extensive explanation and photographs
is now available at:

After our last newsletter some of you asked if we were still planning
on sending out the Abib Report this coming spring, in light of the
dangerous security situation. It just so happens the area where we
found Abib in previous years (the Jericho region) is currently a
danger spot. However, the Abib Expedition is not for several months,
and much may happen between now and then. In the worst case scenario
we will be forced to hire an armed escort, but regardless of the
conditions we will search for the Abib.

Its Time to Pray!

Dear Friends,

Now is the time to pull off your shoes, bow down, and pray to YHWH for
mercy, for Israel has just entered into the most dangerous phase of
the Oslo catastrophe. Yesterday the centrist Likud Party successfully
passed a motion calling for new elections which are expected to take
place in May. At first it looked like the leftist Labor party would
fight the motion but when they saw they could not win, Prime Minister
Ehud Barak declared he was ready for elections. The problem is that
if the elections were held tomorrow all the polls show that Barak
would lose no matter who ran against him. So Barak has only one
chance to win in the next elections and that is to cut a peace treaty
with the Palestinians. By May 2001! This means Barak is desperate
and will try to reach a peace treaty at any price. Any price! We saw
at Camp David that Barak offered the Palestinians over 80% of Judea
and Samaria and de facto control of the Temple Mount and this was not
enough for them. I shudder to think what Barak will offer now,
considering that the Palestinians have invested 2 months of rioting
and on top of that they know how desperate Barak is! So now we are in
real trouble. Israel is up for sale, to be sold at any cost, as long
as it will help Barak win the next election. No matter that Barak
will be Prime Minister of a country small than most American states,
unable to defend its own borders. As it is now, we have uniformed (!)
Palestinian Police nightly opening firing on the Jerusalem
neighborhood of Gilo. And Barak is considering giving over large
sections of Jerusalem itself to these same terrorists! When will the
euphoria of Oslo end?! YHWH, save your people from this horrible
decree, not for our sake but for the glory of your name!

More on Arab Bombing of Jewish School Bus

A few days ago we recieved the following letter from the relatives of
the victims of the recent school bus bombing:

>Our cousins, the Cohens, have suffered a
>tremendous physical and emotional ordeal. Three
>of their seven children were critically injured in the
>bus bombing in Kfar Darom on November 20th.
>Their oldest daughter Orit, 12, lost a foot, their
>daughter, Tehillah, 8-, lost both legs, and their son,
>Yisrael, 7 lost a leg.

>We thank God that they are alive.

>Although they wish they could manage on their
>own, they can not and this despite government
>assistance. They need our help. The three children
>will need long-term medical care. Their home will
>have to be reconstructed to accommodate the
>children's limited mobility. They anticipate a huge
>amount of extra expenses. Difficult though it is to
>ask for financial help from friends and relatives,
>the immediacy of the Cohens' overwhelming crises
>compels us to ask you to open your hearts to help
>them get through this nightmare.

>An account has been opened in the name of Noga and Ofir Cohen:
>Bank Mizrahi #: 20
>Branch #: 426
>Account #: 071010

>Tax exempt receipts in Israel, the US and Canada will be available

>Thank you for your empathy.
