Just a heads up for those of you who already signed up for the Goldstone Tour in Barstow. The NEW DATE is now Sat, Jan 23rd and Matt the event owner still needs info on number of seats available from drivers going onto the base.

Looks like the AM tour is filling up FAST.

Listed drivers that still need to send in their "seat" info in:
AWEMM
DopeyDuck
Gebskab
Pacholik
Smoochersmom
Tartanite

Event link:

EVERYONE *must* carpool from Barstow to reduce the number of cars on the tour.

I have 2 open seats at this time.

I think it is very unlikely that James Wernke was geocaching when he had his
very unfortunate accident, but it probably did occur somewhere very near my
"Prickly & Slippery" cache (#GC20HH9). I know that because, while checking on
the cache, I ran into a woman posting signs for the missing dog on Friday and a
party setting out with picks and shovels to look again today. For those
interested, I've revised my cache description and hints and posted an update log
that might be informative to you all.

FTF ALERT - expect some new caches to be published Saturday in the area of the event.

Please make sure that your people count is posted so we can plan accordingly.
If you're bringing any food, please make sure that's listed.
It looks like we'll have good weather (if you believe the news).

We look forward to a great event and seeing many friends again...

And from the readers comments section I came across this commenter who seemed to forget that the guy went missing up to a mile to the north of this area. Plus there are many more caches in the area if this was the case which I think is not:

If your friend is willing to spend that much for a GPSr, then suggest he take a look at the Delorme PN-40.  It is very highly rated, and is pretty much regarded as the best GPSr for geocaching.  He should check out their web site, and also do a google search and read some reviews about it... see what people think of it, now that it's been out for a few months.

A couple of bonus's... it comes with rechargable batteries (and can use regular AA's in need be)... it comes with Delorme's Topo 8.  It has LOTS of memory for data, waypoints, sky views, GPX files, etc...

I did a google search, and came up with an unbelievable deal...   WalMart had it for $399, but has marked it down to $328.  Unbelievable!

If I didn't already have a pair of Garmin Vista HCx handhelds for geocaching and a Nuvi for street navigation, I'd be running off to grab one of these babies before someone wakes up and realizes what a deal it is.

My friend has a 400 and it goes thru batteries rather quickly.  Now he has a 500 and the battery problem is way better.  He also has the 60Cxs.  He uses the 500 more than the 60Cxs.  The 400 is a backup if everything else fails.

I'm having trouble selecting a Garmin GPS unit.

If I buy the 60Cx for $240 from Costco, I think I need to buy the topo maps in addition for $100. Cost - $ 340.
The Oregon 400t @ $390 from Costco comes pre-loaded with topo maps.

So for an extra $50 I get a much better GPS unit.

Am I missing something, or is my thinking correct? Please advise.

We have scheduled the December version of VEPS for Sunday, December 6th. For
this version, we will be doing a "hike pair" in Orange County. One hike in the
morning, a different hike in the afternoon.

We will be doing a hike pair for one Earthcache and one Virtual next week near
El Toro and then Laguna Beach. To start the morning, we will be meeting at the
Flash Mob in the Limelight Flash event set up by DopeyDuck-GC216FK at 8:00 AM in
the Portolo Hills (north of El Toro), then will be moving from there to the hike
for the Red Rock Canyon-Whiting Ranch Earthcache-GCQ0ZN. The hike for this one
looks to be about 4 miles round trip, 600 elevation change. There looks to be
about 5-6 caches, other than the Earthcache along the trail. Once this hike is
completed, we will be heading over to the Pixy Stix, Pick up Stix and Sugar Fix
Flash Mob Event-GC216GV (also set up by DopeyDuck). We will eat lunch here,
then head down to the Dripping Cache parking and hike.

The Dripping Cache Virtual-GC86A6 (near Laguna Beach) looks like a 4.5 mile
round trip hike (although I have information that it could be as much as 6) with
only about 200 net elevation change. It looks like about 2-3 nearby caches near
or on the trail, not including the Virtual.

Let me know if you are interested in hiking with us for either or both hikes by
Thursday at 5:00PM!

If he is thinking of spending that much for a GPS, suggest that he take a serious look at the Delome PN-40. It cones standard with Topo 8. It's the best rated GPS on the market right now for Geocaching, and Delorme's Topo 8 is the latest version of their top rated topo software.

Hey Ryan!

Glad you found the group. This is the place to come for answers to questions,
and to put together a cache run. There is tons of experience, and oodles of
experience in this group, so if you have questions, ask away, someone will
answer. And if you are going out caching, and want to hang out with some other
cachers, post a note here a couple days in advance, and someone is likely to
join you on whatever journey you plan. ;)

Hope to see ya soon! Maybe Cache and Munchies run next week?

I receintly acquired a netbook, to add to my geocaching arsenol. One of the
minor problems I found with it is that Street Atlas and Topo 6 would not load
into it, due to the small screen size.

That has been changed with the latest releases to these two popular programs.
They operate nicely with the small screen of the netbook.

That being said, there are a few problems. Due to the small size screen, they
have a crowded display. Topo is worse than SA, due to the larger quantity of
data they dispay. If you use them normally, they are tolerable.

If you connect a GPS receiver to the computer (either a bluetooth puck or a
mouse puck) and use the GPS capabilities, they get very busy very fast. Again,
Topo is much more crowded than SA. Additionally, when you are displaying the
map with GPS information, the thing has a large blue stripe about an inch at the
bottom of the map to display the street name you are on. It has some other
information along with the street name. With such a small screen, this is
ENTIRELY TOO MUCH space for the amount of information it displays. It should be
just one line instead of three, with better spacing of the information it is
displaying.

As far as the programs themselves, they are up to their usual top quality. If
you are a user of GSAK, you can export your data to the Delorme programs, then
draw them in on the maps. Very nice for street hunting, it gives you a GPS
display much larger than any of the current popular dash top units.

I use SA more for searching than Topo, but then I haven't been doing any real
off roading since setting the system up. Overall, I have to say they are both
winners. The only real problem I've seen is that large street display, but if
you minimize the GPS data display, it is tolerable.

Wow!
This has been an interesting topic; however the question posed, but not addressed, is who cares.

We'll answer the question.  The people who care about these antics are some of the high find-count cachers and the self proclaimed Geo-Leos.  We learned that lesson during the ATW series.

We split our team on the first night (
Saturday) of searching.  The other half of our teams found twelve countries that night.  After discussing the spirit of the series with an HB cacher, we re-found those same caches the following Wednesday.  To this day, some cachers don't believe we personally found all eighty-eight caches.  (LOL)  Oh well!  You can't please everyone.

After that ordeal, the only number we really keep track of are our FTFs.  This number can't be manipiulated unless you sign the log before the cache had been publushied.  (LOL)  Well, I've heard that some cachers have resorted to that tactic.  IOHO, they are only cheating themself.  Remember, there will always be another FTF opprtunity tomorrow.

There's been plenty of stink among cachers about team caching.  I don't think anyone cares about a huband/wife team, but this goes to an extreme.  Part of the attraction of Geocaching is the free form, the rules are pretty lax.  Just some common sense rules about where not to place caches, and find the cache and log it.  Beyond that it's pretty open.  However, this is pushing the limits, and in my opinion, going way beyond the limits.  All that I think can or should be done is griping and moaning about it in a forum like this, and cache owners that think it's beyond the limits can delete the logs from this cache team.
Just my $.02.

We actually used geotagged photos in our trip guide fro Carbon Canyon (See

way to catalog photos, so you remember where you took them. C loves to take

They just did a skit/promo (for lack of a better word) on Jay Leno regarding this topic.  It was by GARMIN for the Nuvi Touch Phone and they were promoting the geotagging feature it has.

Geotagging has been pretty common with photographers for a while now. Some photographers use a “hockey-puck” style gps unit that attaches to their SLR camera, then they download everything and match the timestamp of the gps coords with the timestamp on their photos, and merge all that data in the EXIF.  Now GPS enabled cameras and camera-phones are becoming mainstream.  And photo sharing sites usually have a map option now.

It’s pretty cool technology, but also scary. We found some of our own photos stolen from Groundspeak’s sites and used on Panoramio (Google’s photo site) which is also a layer on Google Earth.

I don't know why, but Samsung made a digital camera with (among other things) a GPS built in. Seems like an odd combination, but I'm sure someone will figure out a Geocaching application for it.
