Mr. Watson,

Please review the information below and contact me if you have any questions. If you agree that this is of value to those living on and near Lake Greenwood, I ask you to send the information to the list serve readers.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

If you live, work or play around Lake Greenwood, we have a class for you!

Dr. Austin Trousdale, Assistant Professor of Biology at Lander, will be leading a class on "Lake Greenwood Watershed."

During this time, participants will also learn and apply fundamental concepts of aquatic biology in classroom, field, and laboratory settings. Field trips to the lake itself and to one of its source streams (in Jones Gap State Park, SC) will allow students to collect limnological data and observe diverse species that inhabit these ecosystems. Classes start July 10, 2012.

If you know of someone who might enjoy participating in this class, please forward this information to them!

Good morning all I live on hidden lake was wondering if any one saw a boat last night with about 5 big lights and driving very slow around all the shore line. It sounded like it may have had a generator on it does any one know if they were spraying or what they might have been doing?

Curious if there were anyone willing to "cover the story" and report back to the group with a synopsis of the meeting??

Bow fishing, I see them Quite a bit in the shallows in Cokers cove. Just another way some folks enjoy the lake.

They were most likely Bow Fishing for Carp which come to the shore line looking for things to eat on the ground. They are a scavenger fish and can get very large. A heck of a fight for a short time if the fisherman is accurate!

The guys who put on the tournament take care of fish disposal for carp and gar. I've heard they give them to a local zoo or farmers. The catfish get breaded and greased.

I saw several of these guys Bow fishing a couple of years ago! Too Cool!!!
Do the generators not scare this fish? Is it legal to tag/shoot bass and catfish?
I may try this sometime!

I was wondering the same thing, Greg.

Curious if there were anyone willing to "cover the story" and report back to the group with a synopsis of the meeting??

I have a new weed or plant growing in the water in front of my sea wall at 1971 Pineland Shores Circle, Cross Hill. Can We get someone from the lake maintenance to treat it before it spreads?

Is this sufficient, or should I call someone, if so who and where?

Thanks,

Because South Carolina is currently considered to be in moderate to extreme drought conditions, is there an option to maintain Lake Greenwood between the 439 and 440 elevation level to offset the outlook for the drought to persist or intensify?

August 2011 began with the lake level being almost 12 inches below the 439 elevation and September began with it being almost 24 inches below 439. South Carolina has experienced drought conditions during eight of the last ten years and the outlook through July 2012 is for the drought to persist or intensify.  Seems it should be considered to take advantage of the lake's current level of 439.5, which could be maintained while meeting the mandated outflow instead of dumping the water as quickly as is safely possible just to get to the 439 level.

The Savannah lakes may be in drought, but we are not!!! Lake Greenwood is currently well above normal levels, thanks to all the rain we have gotten in the last few days. This is about the same level as around this time last year, so my best advice is to ask for help from the guy who really is in charge (or the gal, if you only believe in Mother Nature ;->) once summer rolls around.

I've heard reports of gators on Lake Greenwood in the past, but never seen any proof.

While on the Lake this weekend, a friend was stopped by SCDNR and they had mentioned a gator being hit on the road, they also said one was hit by a boat recently. I brushed it off at the time as the boat was full of brides maids and thought the green jeans may have been pulling a fast one.

I Googled it this morning and found this article:

http://www.indexjournal.com/main.asp...rticleID=11830

Anyone ever seen a gator on the Lake? My family has been on that lake since before my time, and no one in my family has ever come across one. I've bow fished the lake for 7+ years so I've seen just about every creek and backwater area on the lake, but I have never seen the slightest sign of gators.

I talked with our ecologist who also works with the Savannah River Ecology Lab over the weekend.

He was not surprised to hear the news report and suggested that it could be of interest to some to conduct a survey of the lake to determine if there is actually any population or if this was a capture/release from another area or even someone’s pet gator!  (this is what he and others in the program do for SREL). He was interested in getting a DNA sample to see what could be learned about this gator and any other potential for gators on the lake.

Our neighbor saw a 5' gator sunning on our boat ramp last week up from
Twin Rivers. He's not the kind of guy to make up things and he knows
wildlife. The catfish noodlers came by yesterday and didn't get anything
out from the prop wash hole under his ramp beside ours, so maybe the
gator has already noodled them out himself and moved on. I've seen 50
pound cats noodled out from under there. It might be good if lake
management could give us a primer on gator etiquette.

On the plus side, we have nesting peacocks, so that's nice.

I think it would answer a lot of questions if the Wildlife people preformed an autopsy and checked the stomach content. With temperatures warming in the area it is just a matter of time before these new neighbors move in.

Gators are not natural to the Lake Greenwood area, not possible at all. In the river system downstream of Greenwood gators are found until you reach Congaree river near I-77. The gator hit near Greenwood was released by someone. They can be purchased at some reptile fairs, or people catch them from the lowcountry to keep as pets. The area mentioned in the article sounds like it is the creek which is not connected to the lake and dumps out downstream of the dam in the Saluda river. There are several beaver swamps in the area. Worse case scenario is someone released several gators, but that is unlikely. The game wardens should check out some of the swamps in that area to check for more lizards.

Anyone ever seen a gator on the Lake? My family has been on that lake since before my time, and no one in my family has ever come across one. I've bow fished the lake for 7+ years so I've seen just about every creek and backwater area on the lake, but I have never seen the slightest sign of gators.

If anyone does not know there are some significant changes in creel and size limits starting this July.  Attached is the DNR's PDF file about the changes.

Thanks

Robin

Is there a webpage or link for this? If it's o.k., I would like to post it on Preserving Lake Greenwood's Facebook page.

Not sure if the PDF has a link but it is located on the right side of the DNR website.
