Subject: Trouble to move registration to the ENTTEC DMX USB PRO
adatgren
Send Email Send Email

I transferred the registration to the ENTTEC and everything is working fine.
When it is connected to the computer Lightfactory says it is registered and the
device is connected and if it´s not connected Lightfactory says it´s
unregistered and I get the options popup. Everything is great. But when I move
the ENTTEC to another computer I still get the popup that say that I am
unregistered. When I open Lightfactory it sees the ENTTEC device but I am not
registered. What am I doing wrong.

Best regards

Anders,

I'm not sure if this will matter or not, but one thing I wonder about is
what version of LightFactory you're running (on each computer). Could you
specify that for us to help put this in context?

Thanks

Sorry
Of course. I am running V2,0 build 269 on both computers. Vista on the first one
and XP on the other one.
As it is described in the manual it is no need to do any other measure then just
to transfer the license to the USB PRO.
Just a thought. Is my registration still locked to the serial number of my
first computer and can that be the problem?

Ver 2.1 has been up on our website since July. I'm not saying it's the
problem here, that you have to upgrade, to fix it, but it's probably going
to give you other nice features so if the other problem goes away when you
do, well I will feel like my day is off to a great start.

But to address your other theory, no, that's not how it works. The serial
number is no longer relevant once you move the registration onto the
hardware box. The difference between XP and VIsta shouldn't matter but I'm
beginning to wonder about that (an unreported bug perhaps?). Can you try
it on a third computer just to see if the pattern is consistent between XP
and Vista that way?

Meanwhile, I think when Martin wakes up (he is in New Zealand) he will
probably contact you off the list if he gets any ideas. I don't know if
this has happened to anyone else before, but if it has, this list is the
place to be for learning more.

Cheers,
Jeremy

Hello Jeremy

And thanks for your reply.
But now I am little confused. Who is the (producer) of Lightfactory?
The reason I ask is I bought the upgrade yesterday and downloaded it from Stage
research homepage and they don't have the 2.1 ver.
If I look at your homepage(Enttec) or Coopers I can find the 2.1 ver. I tought
that Stage research was the (producer). It's not a problem. I just became a
little confused.
I will try it out first thing in the morning (GMT +1) as well as on another
Vista computer.

Best regards
Anders

You don't really want to know, unless you plan to medicate yourself
heavily to treat the headache that trying to comprehend the answer will
cause.

OK, levity aside, we're all in it together, and we help each other out.
That's what counts.

It sounds to me like the device is not visible on the second computer. There should be no changes between the different versions of the software – I’m confident the version is not the problem but recommend that you upgrade anyway.

Do you know how to use the windows device manager? You may want to check test to see if the drivers installed correctly.

Hello Martin and thank you for the reply.
In the device manager it looks like everything is okay.
Under com & lpt ports it identifies itself like USB serial port and no problem.
Under Universal Serial Bus as USB serial converter and no problem.
Litefactory identifies it correctly but says the software is unregistered.

Best regards Anders Myhrman Skånesdansteter

OK I will ask no futher question.

Nice to know that there is help to get.
The only other thing I have to say is it's a great software. I am a sound
engineer, despite that it didn't took me more than 10 min to program my first
q-list without the manual.
Best regards Anders

Now I have tried a third computer (Vista) and no further luck unfortunately.
Still the same problem, Lightfactory identifies the DMX dongle but still say the
software is unregistered.
Is there other people that have got it to work and maybe have some tips?

Best regards Anders

this, or something similar happened to me once. on xp.

lightfactory started up, and didn't recognise the licence, but did recognise the interface.

i seem to remember just  re-pluging the interface and restarting lightfactory, then it was fine.
(maybe something like that happened only if i started lightfactory before the computer was completely started up, or the first time i tried to start light factory that session)

i didn't even bother reporting the error, because it seemed like a one time quirk that might have had more to do with the computer than with lightfactory.  and it disapeared in later versions (this must have been about the time of the v2.0 release.)

anyway, update then try again.

Do you perchance have 2 ENTTEC boxes connected to your computer at the
same time, one with the license and other with no license? If so, then
under system options, Universe 1 must be device 0 and the ENTTEC with
the license must be the first one discovered when the PC boots up.

Everything is great. But when I move the ENTTEC to another computer I
still get the popup that say that I am unregistered. When I open
Lightfactory it sees the ENTTEC device but I am not registered. What am
I doing wrong.

Yeah, so what *is* the story on binding of USB devices to device IDs within
a device driver? Is it somewhat random? Is it based on the order in which
devices respond to a broadcast discovery message?

Sadly, what I don't know about the details of the USB protocol would fill
volumes. I have found that tricking the computer into binding a specific
USB device (Enttec DMX USB Pro) to specific device ID to be a PITA. :-(

Is this something we simply need to live with, or is there some better
solution?

the enttec dmx usb pro has a unique serial number that can be used to identify individual units.  i beleive that is the proper way to do it.
i'm pretty sure that light factory already remembers which interface is which using this method.

diferenziating between identical devices isn't actualy part of the usb standard, and lots of problems ocour because of this, like when you swap usb flash drives arround a lot, and windows dosent always asign the same drive letters. (this you can actualy fix though, by manualy asigning a drive letter using the windows disk management tool.)

thats why enntec put a unique serial number in the usb dmx pro.

Hi Everyone,

Thought I’d add my 10 cents, as I’ve experienced a similar problem...
We are a small Amateur theatre group, and usually do only one “big show” every 12-18months, so light factory is unused during that time.

We had version 1 running on a laptop with a USB pro holding the licence, and an open USB as an input from an old 24ch desk.  This worked well although the two USB devices would sometimes “fight”.
New show, so we bought the upgrade to vers2, and as the laptop had died, we were donated a PC to use (new build, only for lighting, XP).  I transferred the new license to the USB Pro and it worked well but I can’t get light factory to see the input USB.

I was transferring the PC from home to the Hall so I could program through the wee hours.  Then on the preview show when I powered up the PC at the hall, it would see the USB Pro but wouldn’t see the registration.
I tried everything to fix it, rebooted, changed USB ports, set the Universe options, threatened it with extinction, but no go.

I was lucky that this was during the week and I received heaps of help from Enttec Mark(?) in Melbourne and I was able to reactivate the registration on the PC, where it still is.  I still can’t use the open DMX as input.

It would appear that the USB Pro simply “forgot” the registration, whether this was because it previously had the version 1 rego or it is sick or because of Murphy I can’t say.  This happened about a week after the upgrade.

I was intending on contacting Enttec/ Lightfactory directly to sort this out, but as the next show is 12months away it went onto the backburner, until I read  Ander’s  post.

Cheers
Shane

If you have two ENTTEC USB Pros and plan to use one for receiving DMX
from an external source such as a lighting control desk and you also
have the LightFactory license loaded into one of them, here are some
guidelines for setting up LF and the ENTTECs for consistent operation.

First, in LF, under Options/System Properties/System Input/Output (DMX),
Universe 1 must have Device 0 selected as its port and DMX Input must
have Device 1.

Which box becomes Device 0 and which Device 1 depends on how they are
connected to the PC and when. If the boxes are plugged in to the PC
with the power off, they are assigned in the order they are discovered.
If the boxes are plugged in with the power on, they are assigned in the
order they are connected.

The box containing the license must be the first one
discovered/connected and it becomes the DMX output box because of the
mapping of Device 0 in LF. The second box will then be assigned to
Device 1 which is mapped as the DMX input device.

A PC may have a number of USB controllers (hubs) each having a number of
ports. During boot-up, each USB port is scanned by hub number and then
port number within a given hub, both in numerical order. If a device is
detected, it is queried to determine its function and what driver is
needed to communicate with it. The ENTTEC USB Pro looks like a serial
port and so is assigned a COM number (COM4, for instance). Depending on
the USB hardware in the PC and the OS, you may be able to determine the
hub and port number of each physical USB port using the Device Manager.
If not, then here is a procedure to determine a consistent setup that
will remain through power cycles.

1. Start with the PC booted-up, the ENTTECs unplugged and LightFactory
not running. First, plug in the ENTTEC that has the license, then plug
in the second box. Start up LF and the box with the license should be
the output (LED slow blink) and the second box the input.

2. Exit LF and shutdown the PC (or restart it). After it boots, start
LF. If the "Software is unregistered" window appears, click on
"Continue" and then exit LF. Power down the PC and swap the USB cables.
Now, on boot-up of the PC and startup of LF, the box assignment should
be consistent. Just remember that if you unplug and replug the boxes
while the PC is running, the box with the license must be reconnected
first and into the same USB port where it was before. As a suggestion,
use colored tape (like spike tape) to label the boxes, cables and ports.

to add to your notes, LF version 2 will in the command winode, and in the
information column of the system properties page display the serial number of
the usb pro, which is on the lable on the outside of the ENTTEC unit. so you
can be sure which unit is connected to which universe

Hmmm. I probably need to find a "USB for Dummies" article, but I don't
understand what I see in the Device Manager window of my PC.

I see (4) USB Universal Host Controllers and (1) USB2 Enhanced Host
Controller. I also see (5) USB Root Hubs and (1) USB Printing Support
device. The hubs are all at "Location 0". The controllers are at PCI bus
0, Device 29, Function {0, 1, 2, 3, 7}.

Three is a USB printer connected to one of the USB slots. Can I assume that
the USB Printing Support device would show up as another USB Root Hub if the
printer were disconnected, and that there is a 1-to-1 mapping of Root Hubs
to USB connectors on the PC? That still leaves two connectors unaccounted
for.

My PC has (6) USB connectors on the rear apron and (2) on the front panel.

I don't have any DMX adapters connected at the moment -- they're down at the
theatre. Perhaps if I did have them connected, something interesting would
show up. As it is, I have no idea how to map the physical connectors to
logical device "channels".

I'm guessing that the architecture of USB is supposed to be completely
plug-'n'-play, so that it doesn't matter which device shows up on which
"channel". It's all self registering. That obviously doesn't match the
requirements of LF, in mapping adapter devices to universes.

I agree that the information about the USB subsystem that you get from
the device manager is not particularly enlightening. However, if you
follow the procedure I outlined in the root topic, you really don't need
to know the hub and port mapping. Once you've chosen two ports and you
get the ENTTEC with the license to come up as the output when the
computer is powered up and LF started, then just mark those ports and
always plug the same box into each. Even so, if you plug the ENTTECs
after the computer is booted, then be sure to plug the license box in
first.

We have a MAC mini in our office and LightFactory run fine on that using
Parallels.

On a windows platform right? I have tried that once before and the only way I could get it to work was to use a powered USB hub. The USB ports on the MacBook Pro did not supply enough power to run the DMX USB Pro. Once the USB hub was in – no problems.

I use bootcamp on my MBP and its actually way better than on a pc computer. I've had far less hardware problems on my MBP, However, software seems consistent between both.

I've not had any problems on my MBP with my dmx pro. I've had problems on windows computers which required a powered hub, but the complete opposite on my mac. My computer is only 6 months old though. So I can't vouch for older computers.

Is it possible to morph a lightfactory show with different fixture types?
Playing venues with different moving light packages. Is there an easy way or
work around?
