Dear spyglamsters,
this is a call to action...on Friday, August 5, 1999, we are planning a
demonstration in front of MTV's 42nd St. Headquarters in Times Square, NYC.
During the woodstock 99 festival, an astounding number of girls reported being
raped or sexually assaulted in the mosh pit. MTV darling bands like Limp
Bizkit only encouraged the behavior telling girls to take their shirts off, and
NO ONE including the police did anything to stop it. The entire festival
which was representative of mainstream pop/youth culture not some freak
underground occurance, was filled with such incidents. Girls were pulled into
porto-potties and assaulted/ gang raped, venders had naked women stand by so
that they could sell disposable cameras to men who could then take a picture
next to the woman. I've included an article that has more details.
Basically, what we want is to create a massive demonstration in front of MTV
and let them know what we think of what happened and what we think of their
message of exploitation and violence. We want you to make flyers and posters
and tell everyone you know who will be in NYC to come and support our effort to
get the word out. Mainstream media has been ignoring the rape stories...we want
the truth, we want them to face the facts, and we want MTV to know that we hate
the message that they've been broadcasting for years. What happened at
woodstock was an acting out of what they've been saying all along, women are not
people, women are sex objects, women can be raped and no one will do anything
about it.
So please, if you're not in NYC, forward this to people you know who are. We
want this to happen tommorrow during MTV's Live show which airs at 3PM. We'd
like to assemble earlier than that, approximately 2PM. We ask you to help us by
bringing some articulate flyers and posters and people to back us up. We really
want this to happen.
    Thank you for your support.

from Todays news @ Sonic Net:

At least two women were raped in the mosh pit at Woodstock '99 last
weekend, according to a volunteer who witnessed one assault and a rape
counselor involved in assisting the victim in the other.

In each incident, which occurred on different nights of the three-day,
30th-anniversary Woodstock '99 festival, the woman was allegedly raped
and assaulted by multiple men, as concert-goers around the crime cheered
her assailants on.

Meanwhile, the internal-investigations office of the New York State
Police in Albany announced Wednesday that the on-site trooper-supervisor
was suspended without pay following accusations that several troopers in
his area urged female Woodstock attendees to pose nude for photos with
police, Jamie Mills, director of public information, said. The
investigation is continuing.

"It looked like a clear gang-rape to me." ˜ David Schneider, mosh-pit
witness

While New York State Police have been vague about reports of
sexual-assault cases at Woodstock, officials finally confirmed Thursday
(July 29) that they are investigating four alleged rapes said to have
occurred during the outdoor concert held on the former Griffiss Air
Force base in Rome, N.Y.

One of the alleged rapes being investigated was said to have occurred in
the mosh pit during rap-rockers Limp Bizkit's performance Saturday,
while the other three allegedly happened at the campground, according to
Capt. John Wood of the state police in Oneida, N.Y.

Meanwhile, additional reports have surfaced through local
rape-counseling centers and due to witnesses' coming forward.

David Schneider, a rehabilitation counselor who worked as a volunteer
with the social-service program Family of Woodstock during the event,
said he witnessed a gang rape in the mosh pit during a set by the
hip-hop-influenced rock-act Korn on Friday night.

"At one point I saw this girl, a very petite girl, maybe 100 pounds, who
was body-surfing above the crowd and either fell in or was pulled into a
circle in the mosh pit," Schneider, 28, said Thursday. "These gentlemen,
probably in the 25ˆ32 age range, looked as though they were holding her
down. They were holding her arms; you could see she was struggling."

Schneider said he could not see everything that was happening through
the dense crowd of nearly 200,000 and estimated he was about 15ˆ20 feet
from where the alleged assault occurred.

"You try to judge by the crowd right around them, and no one really
seemed to be too concerned about it," he said, explaining why he did not
immediately report the incident. "I watched a little longer, and you
clearly could see that one of the guys was pulling her pants down ˜ her
top was left on. You could see he was violating her.

"Then it looked like he passed her off to his friend next to him," he
continued. "It looked like a clear gang-rape to me, where he was just
passing her on to at least one other person.

"At some point, it appeared she gave up struggling."

Estimating the assault lasted a few minutes, Schneider said
concert-goers then came to her rescue and helped her to security. When
security personnel lifted the woman over the barricade, Schneider saw
that she was partially naked, which seemed to confirm to him that she
had been raped.

Woodstock promoter Michael Lang was quoted in a number of reports saying
he could not imagine how a rape could occur in a crowded mosh pit.

Schneider, who said he could offer police basic descriptions of two of
the men, further explained that he didn't report what he saw at the time
because he assumed that security was handling it, adding that there
likely were hundreds of other witnesses. He said he also saw three or
four other women being assaulted in the mosh pit.

Becky Fike, acting director of the crisis center at Family of Woodstock,
said she had dealt with many Woodstock '99 sexual-assault cases but few
victims wanted to file official reports. "It's the same reasons as in
the society beyond Woodstock," she said, explaining why so few sex-crime
cases are reported. "Peer pressure, family pressure, some of the women
... had been involved in drugs and alcohol."

On Thursday, Woodstock co-promoter John Scher ducked questions about
whether he felt widespread nudity shown on the concert's video screens
fostered an anything-goes atmosphere at the site.

"This was just an observation of what was going on," he said.

Late the following night or early Sunday morning, another rape allegedly
occurred in the mosh pit, according to Utica, N.Y., YWCA Rape Crisis
director Rosemary Vennero.

Vennero said a woman in her early 20s was raped and assaulted by "more
than one" man. "She was in the crowd and she was assaulted," said
Vennero, whose organization later counseled the victim. "People came to
her rescue, and my understanding is that she was then body-surfed to
security." The victim was treated at a local hospital and released.

Vennero said her staff counseled a total of four rape and sexual-assault
victims who were Woodstock concert-goers. The staff has fielded multiple
other calls regarding sexual assault at Woodstock.

It could not be confirmed at press time whether the alleged mosh-pit
rape being investigated by police is the same case that was described by
Vennero.

A 24-year-old Pittsburgh woman told police she was raped Saturday night
while crowd-surfing during a set by Limp Bizkit, Wood said. The woman
told police she was pulled into the mosh pit, raped and assaulted, he
added.

The three other assaults that allegedly occurred in the camping area
involve a 32-year-old Ohio woman, who told police she was raped at the
campground Saturday night, according to an Associated Press report. A
20-year-old New York woman also reportedly said she was assaulted that
night, while another 20-year-old woman from Virginia told troopers two
or three men raped her in the campgrounds Sunday afternoon.

In a posting on the official Woodstock website, a father said his
daughter got separated from her three girlfriends early Monday morning
and was pulled into a tent by a "a clean cut college looking guy with
dirty blond hair" who raped her. An investigator said Wednesday that the
description of the alleged crime did not sound similar to any of the
reports New York State Police are investigating.

The father wrote that he was offering a $10,000 reward for help leading
to the assailant's arrest and conviction and asked that anyone with
information "do the right thing" and come forward.

Allegations of sex crimes have continued to surface since the three-day
fest came to its fiery end Sunday night.

Some of the New York State Police's own troopers were even accused of
misconduct, when a report surfaced in a Syracuse newspaper that alleged
several troopers encouraged two women to strip and then posed for
pictures with the naked women. The Syracuse Post-Standard quoted an
officer as saying "Show us some [breasts]," and another saying "Show me
some bottom," attributing the allegations to the two women who obliged
their requests.

In all, eight troopers are alleged to have been involved in sexual
misconduct at the show. Schneider said he believed a female trooper
witnessed the apparent rape he saw during the Korn set. Police could not
be reached for comment.

The three-day concert was telecast on pay-per-view via local cable
networks. Investigators will review the footage to see whether any of
the incidents may have been captured on tape, officials said.

While some artists, such as Limp Bizkit singer Fred Durst, encouraged
rowdy behavior during shows, Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea and
Offspring frontman Dexter Holland admonished male concert-goers for
their inappropriate behavior toward women in the mosh pit.

Flea (born Michael Balzary) even added to his onstage comments in a
posting on the band's official website, "I just didn't like when guys
would grab at the girls who had their tops off," the bassist wrote.
"Guys think and look [and] fantasize about girl[s'] t-ts all day and
finally the girl[s] are nice and free enough to let them flow and guys
abuse the beauty of it all by groping without invitation. Some nerve."

Vennero said that in addition to the victims the YWCA dealt with, she
continues to hear horror stories about sexual assaults at the festival.

"You hear people saying things like, 'When we went to sleep at night in
the tent, I just heard people screaming, and they weren't screams of
pleasure, they were screams of terror,' " she said. "I have to say I
have to believe a lot of what I'm hearing."

A 23-year-old man who worked as a food vendor at the festival told
Vennero that female workers always were accompanied by at least two men
for protection, because concert-goers were trying to assault them while
they were serving food. "This was happening right there," Vennero said.
"They were serving you a hamburger and they were being grabbed at."

Vennero urged victims of sexual assault to reach out to their local
rape-counseling centers, adding that only a small percentage of rapes
are ever reported.

okay:
it has been very quiet on this list as of late.
and seeing as we do have some new members, maybe it would be a good idea to
re-intro ourselves.
bienvenue. my name is kat, im 24, live in NYC, do film, writing, graphic
design, and lots of other artsy-things. have lived here for two-and-a-half
years, and am in the process of applying to film school (graduate). i do a
zine, Lipstick My Espionage, which is why this list exists. check out
http://come.to/lipstickmyespionage for more info (blatant plug! get my zine!

im hard at work on #2, which is ending up to be a bit more personal...anyone

forever. one last thing, to those listpeople from england, i came back to
the U.S. late last week from cornwall, where i got to see the solar eclipse,
and it was quite stunning. xoxox kat

Hi,
This is for the girl that is looking for places to
stay in Los Angeles...
The cheapest and cleanest would be The Banana Bungalow
Weird Name but it's cute and very inexpensive
They cater mostly to European backpackers so I think
you at least have to have a passport to stay there but
call and find out
They are in Hollywood near Hollywood Bowl
Another great place is (believe or not) The Best
Western on Franklin in Hollywood Hills
I ate breakfast with Brad Pitt there (well, he was at
the same coffee shop)
If you're looking for something ultra trendy, cutting
edge and hot then it's definitely The Standard in
Downtown L.A. recently redesigned by Phillipe Starck
It's similar to The Mondrian but hipper, younger,
better
Other great places: The Roosevelt Hotel (Hollywood)
the rumor is that it is haunted but even if it isn't
the old Hollywood memorablia is fun, Farmer's Daughter
Motel on Fairfax and Beverly near the CBS Studios
(relatively very cheap and the name alone is the
selling point for me - Charlize Theron used to live
there while she struggled as an actress!)
There's a Holiday Inn on Silverlake and Virgil that is
closest to Silverlake and Los Feliz if you want to be
close to those areas but Holiday Inns are very generic
and overpriced
Another great hotel in Downtown L.A. is the Westin
Bonaventure
They have really fast, futuristic elevators and the
top floor spins! Very Jetsons!
And let's see what else?
I think that's it
Of course if price is no object and you're looking for
glamour and luxury, then The Chateau Marmont, The
Mondrian, The Peninsula, The Four Seasons, The
Shangri-La in Santa Monica, The Beverly Hills Hotel,
etc. etc.
love,
Poly

why doesn't everyone do a re-introduction? just for the new people and
also since nothings been posted for a while...

i'll go first:
my name is joanne, i've lived in new york for about 2 years, but i'm
originally from Los Angeles... Shangri-La, Hell-LA, or whatever you wanna
call it... i'm studying film and television production at NYU with somewhat
of a focus on documentary films. i play a lotta different musical
instruments, and used to be in a band called 'the fundies' that used to
decorate the stage with inflatable plastic animals that you buy at the 99
cents store (or pic-n-save which is an LA thing i think) called "animal
noodles"...
some of my favorite movies are: my life to live, the butcher boy,
orpheus, grey gardens, don't look back, high school, sweetie, ed wood, the
servent, lennigrad cowboys...and too many others... i'm also super-obsessed
with rod serling and the twilight zone...to this day i have yet to meet
someone who can name an episode i've never seen...
other obsessions are: the weetzie bat books, Raoul Vaneigem, adrinne
tomine comics, the library, 72 degree weather, factory records,
grape-flavored things, sand, plastics.
right now i'm about to start school and getting ready to shoot my first
color, sync-sound film...it's 8 min long and going to be about 2 teenage
girls who make their own world within the mundane surroundings of suburbia.
i'm still looking for actresses... as well as someone to play the armenian
mom...
     okay... that's all for now...
   see you later...
xox,
joanne

For those of you who haven't seen it...the documentary called WAR ZONE,
directed by Maggie Hadleigh-West, is
showing at Cinema Classics, 332 E. 11th St., New York, NY, from Thursday,
Sept. 9-Sunday, Sept. 12th. The
director will be there for a Q&A session on the 9th and 11th after the 8:00
screening those nights.

The film is "about sex, power, and what happens when men threaten a woman's
right to walk undisturbed on the
streets." Basically the film shows what happens when Hadleigh-West takes a
hand-held camera and turns around to interview (on-camera) every man that
harrasses her on the street. It's fascinating to see the men's reactions;
during the making of this film, somewhere in the vicinity of 1500 men made
comments to Hadleigh-West about her appearance, etc.

Anyway, the film's showing at 8:00 pm and 10:00 pm on September 9/10th; 6:00,
8:00, and 10:00 on Sept.
11th/12th. The admission is a mere $5, and it's sponsored by the NOW-NYC
Anti-Violence Committee. I saw this film a few months ago and it was
terrific....I think it's very important for both men and women to watch it.
Hope some of you can make it.

.well, it's not quite a proper intro 'cause im in a bit of a rush right
now--im off to san francisco for the weekend! anyway, yes, everyone *do*
please intro yrselves, even if you plan to lurk forever and ever. also, do
tell us why you signed up for this list. im the list mistress here, this is
an order! heh...

moi: my name is kat, im 24, i went to duke, i work in film/video and now
graphic design and im rapidly learning web stuff, as well. (skills to pay
the bills, don't you know...) i live in NYC, but lately ive been all over
the place. um, im thai-american, im editing a short right now which is
slowly coming along. films i love are breathless, vivre sa vie, un coeur en
hiver, happy together, fallen angels, clueless, desperately seeking susan.
what music im listening to now: the housemartins, suede, chapterhouse, the
yummy fur, belle and sebastian, huggy bear, rye coalition and lamb. im
vegan most of the time, though sometimes i give in to cheese (can't help it,
i grew up in the midwest.) on the myers-brigg test i am a Healer, on the
enneagram i am a "Tragic Romantic", and i also dig astrology. i love
francesca lia block's books, as well as jeanette winterson, virginia woolf
and lately ive been reading lots of faulkner. i do a zine called Lipstick My
Espionage, which is why i started this list. oh, by the way, those who sent
me issues will get a zine in the next two weeks....

voila! anyway, everyone have a great labor day weekend and i look forward to
hearing from y'all...

hello all you hipsters and shakers :)
ok, so ive been incommunicado lately...but i now plan to be a bit more vocal
now that i have returned from my sojourn. i went to san francisco, los
angeles, chicago and then montreal...all in two weeks!
(im such the jetsetter...heh. actually the travel bit itself was completely
stressful, why is air travel such a bitch?)
anyway, since this list has been so quiet, i will just ramble for a bit on
my trip and tell you lovely people what i found on my travels...

**san francisco**
how i love this city! in fact, this time around i loved it so much that i
have basically decided to move there next year. many reasons abound:
serenity, healthier air, fresher food, closer proximity to the ocean. (man,
am i getting old or what?) i knew something was going on when seeing the
pacific ocean nearly made me cry with joy. it's funny, though, to know that
my days in new york are numbered (im leaving at the end of the year anyway,
because my sister is having a baby and im returning home to help care for
it, and then come spring im off to thailand to make a documentary)...for
years and years, i nursed this dream about new york and it feels very
strange to complete that. in some ways, it's really odd to fulfill on a
dream--the dilemma is, do you keep living it, or do you pursue a new one?
anyway...off the introspective tip...

**heavy metal**
one of my more interesting subcultural moments was going to a night at cat
club called sixteen, which was basically dancing to late 70s glam rock/early
80s heavy metal. think lots of iggy pop, motley crue, guns n roses, billy
idol. it was yr typical gritty/swank urban club, but instead of soigne
gazelles of the night and swarthy modern lotharios, the space was filled
with lots of people in tight leather pants and heavy metal shirts and
acid-washed jeans (!). needless to say, it was a bit bizarre but after a bit
it was quite fun, although the music was a bit typical and missing some
crucial elements (i was hoping they would play some def leppard or foreigner
or even, hell, journey)...

anyway, kids, im sure ill babble later till some people get
talkin'...anyway, im curious as to if anyone has noticed any odd and/or
interesting cultural phenomena (i.e. - the resurrection of heavy metal, all
the mod/soul music parties in nyc and san francisco). or just intro yrselves
if you wish...

ps- does anyone know if the new francesca lia block novel is out yet?

my doc, as it stands now, will be about young girls in the sex industry in
thailand leaving the industry, about the particular transitions back into
"society." my aunt runs a shelter for underage girls who "work" (i use
quotes because they are not there of their free will, they are usually
forced) in brothels and gives them a place to stay, helps them get often
much-needed medical treatment and starts legal proceedings to help them
either return home or stay legally in thailand. so i hope to document the
work there, as well. ideally, i would love to follow one girl as she goes
through the process, but we'll see--it takes some time to get any subject to
trust someone, and im not sure how long ill be in thailand due to all sorts
of visa stuff to deal with...how did it get so hard to go around the world?

you know, this has actually become a big issue for me lately...access to
fresh food, cleaner air, etc. ive become such a healthnik as i age :) but
it's sort of become important to me. it's sort of related to me being
(mostly) vegan (i have a hard time giving up chocolate), but now ive become
very aware of anything that goes into my body. i like fresh food!

> i know there used to be a lot of mod/soul parties in LA... but i

i wouldn't say it's huge here (really, is there anything that gets huge here
in NYC? there is so much going on that nothing really dominates, i
think...). but there was On! at Life, sometimes Charmed Life, Shout!,
tiswas...you go and you do see the same people floating around. i think it's
pretty fun, but it's also a bit funny to me. like, how does this stuff get
trendy? is there a National Council of Hipsters that meets periodically and
decides, "oooh, i think we should bring back heavy metal and mullets?" (then
again, my roommate and i got into a bit of a guns n roses fix (heh) this
summer...maybe it's something in the air?)

well, it's friday morning and it's gorgeous outside...it was pretty
light...

i hope to go april through august. but i might have to get back early
because of visa restrictions...

okay kids, it's been quiet, hasn't it?
so here is the latest news:
i'm just about done with lipstick my espionage #2!
i don't know who ever read the first one, but it's a bit different, a bit
more personal and stream-of-conscious-y. this time i wrote about
cheerleading, cultural nostalgia and heavy metal, bedroom scenes in godard
films, my life in NYC. secret sources wrote a piece on her job in a massage
parlor, and there are lots of lists of random things and lots of random
writing...

if you are interested, please email me. generally, it's two stamps and $1,
but i actually prefer trades (for zines, a nice letter, mix tapes, small
pieces of art, cookies :)....

so that's that...anyway, has anyone heard any good music lately (anyone
heard the new comet gain? good or no?) im ALWAYS looking for new music to
listen to, always hot on the trail for the sound your eyes can follow...
