opportunity to hear them first hand. Nuthin special. The one
thing I did notice is the fans. When they call in they

signs point to the demise of shock-jock Erich "Mancow"
Muller's syndicated show on Milwaukee's WLUM-FM (102.1) in
the next few months.<br><br>No change has been
announced, and WLUM general manager Dan Manella says, "We
don't comment on such matters."<br><br>But the evidence
is increasingly strong that Mancow's show is just
about toast.<br><br>The Chicago-based program just lost
its Detroit home, where it was aired on tape. There
are rumors of troubles in other Mancow markets, as
well.<br><br>Most importantly, there's strong talk in Milwaukee
radio circles that WLUM is already planning for its
post-Mancow future and talking about it.<br><br>And that
future doesn't include any syndicated
programming.<br><br>Syndicated morning shows have not had a good history in
Milwaukee, which turns to wake-up programs that are live,
local and zany. That's what you're almost certain to
see on WLUM.<br><br>WLUM's most direct competitor
remains WLZR-FM (102.9), where Bob Madden and Brian
Nelson have ruled the ratings for years. Chipping away
at some of their audience is the only way any new
show can succeed.<br><br>The likely failure of Mancow
after more than three years on WLUM is one more sign
that this market will never - repeat, never - pick up
Howard Stern's syndicated radio show. While Stern's show
is smarter and funnier than Mancow's second-tier
version of the shock-jock format, it's also substantially
more expensive.<br><br>And the consensus among
Milwaukee broadcasters is that enough local advertisers
would be frightened away by Stern's reputation for
lewdness that a station playing his show couldn't sell
enough spots to make the show financially
successful.<br><br>A NEW BOSS<br>Clear Channel Radio has named John
Gehron regional vice president and market manager
overseeing Chicago and Wisconsin stations, including
Milwaukee's six Clear Channel outlets: WOKY-AM (920), WISN-AM
(1130), WLTQ-FM (97.3), WRIT-FM (95.7), WKKV-FM (100.7)
and WMIL-FM (106.1).<br><br>Gehron is the former
general manager of WLS-AM (890), and is credited with
standardizing the modern "smooth jazz" radio format on
Chicago's WNUA-FM.<br><br>CHANNEL SURFING<br>In another bid
to confuse its audience, ABC is moving "Once and
Again" back to 9 p.m. Mondays starting March 4. The show
will disappear until then. . . . ABC's "Nightline"
resumes its five-part look at the deadly Congo war Monday
at 11:35 p.m. on Channel 12. The ambitious project
was blown off the news by the Sept. 11 attacks. . . .
Secretary of State Colin Powell will headline an MTV
"Global Forum" aimed at young viewers sometime next
month.<br><br>SO LONG, IYANLA<br>Channel 6 had plugged Iyanla
Vanzant's syndicated talk show into the 2:05 a.m. slot to
see if the show would survive before moving it to
more valuable real estate.<br><br>That hesitancy was
borne out this week with word that "Iyanla" tapes its
finale on Friday. Reruns will air through
March.<br><br>Increasingly, new syndicated shows aren't getting good time
slots on their Milwaukee affiliates until they prove
themselves nationally. Of course, without good time slots in
