Let us have nothing to do with wicked and vain talk and in all things let us with all our might cling to Him. He certainly is ready to give us His Help.

ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH BARTHOLOMEW DISCUSSES
THE STATE OF ORTHODOX CHRISTIANITY IN TURKEY IN 60 Minutes SEGMENT

NEW YORK – His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, the spiritual leader of 300 million Orthodox Christians who constitute the second largest Christian Church in the world, was featured on the CBS News program 60 Minutes broadcast last evening throughout the United States, and globally on the Internet at http://www.cbsnews.com/sections/60minutes/main3415.shtml

His All Holiness, in an impressive manner combining clear and firm positions with humility and unpretentious appearance, spoke frankly about the patriarchate’s situation in the Republic of Turkey, the home of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and of countless ancient Christian sites, including the Cathedral of Hagia Sophia built by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian in 537 AD, as well as many of the most famous monuments and churches in Christendom including those of Cappadocia. A very important item preserved in the Mount Sinai Monastery of St. Catherine and presented during the interview, was a document signed by Mohammed himself, the Prophet and Founder of the Islamic Religion, in which he speaks about the right of the freedom of belief and practice of the Christian Religion.

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew has been an outspoken supporter of Turkey’s modernization and acceptance into the European Union. In the interview, he discussed his affection and commitment to his native Turkey, but also he indicated that the Turkish government had fallen short of its own ideals as well as the ideals of the international community.  He cited characteristically the case of the forcible closure of the only local Orthodox Patriarchal Seminary (Halki) in 1971 by government authorities. It has not been re-opened since then, despite continued promises by the Turkish government, and despite the fact, as the Patriarch said, that the Seminary at Halki has trained a significant number of priests who became strong promoters of peace, unity and love among the people.

When asked during the interview by veteran CBS correspondent Bob Simon “Do you feel personally Your All Holiness that you have been crucified sometimes?” the Patriarch unhesitantly answered, “Yes, I do!” But he had stated immediately before the question: “We believe in miracles… after the Crucifixion the Resurrection comes. We believe in the Resurrection.”

His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios, Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in America, commented that “our Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew offered during his 60 Minutes interview a superb and compelling witness for our Ecumenical Patriarchate. Painfully, but calmly and without any trace of hostility, he presented the tremendous difficulties that the Patriarchate faces. As we know, the difficulties include in addition to the closure of Halki, the refusal of the Turkish Government to recognize the title “Ecumenical” for the Patriarch, the confiscation of innumerable properties of the Patriarchate and the denial of the legal status of the Patriarchate.  The Ecumenical Patriarch emphatically stated the need for the Turkish Government to finally act in accordance with the ideals of democracy and freedom of religion which it frequently likes to proclaim.”

60 Minutes is the pre-eminent investigative television news show in the United States and has run on CBS since 1968. It has been among the top-rated TV programs for much of its life and has garnered numerous awards over the years.

More information about His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew’s work for religious freedom, human rights environmental conservation, and the Ecumenical Patriarchate as well as texts of his addresses may be found at www.patriarchate.org <http://www.patriarchate.org> .

Hello marksedrak yahoogroup members,

Greetings in our Lord.
I pray that you and your families are having a blessed Advent.

Recently about a dozen messages got posted through this group that should have
been deleted. This group receives numerous posts, and I personally make every
effort to not let irrelevant ones get distributed.

I deeply apologize, and will make every effort to make sure that this does not
happen again.

Please forgive me.

Having received from God a propitiation for your offenses, glorify Him who is long-suffering and forgiving, and make every effort to avoid deliberate sin. For though your sins may be forgiven daily until your death, it would be foolish of you to sin glibly with full knowledge of what you are doing. Nonetheless, if you drive off the dog of despair with the stone of hopefulness and supplicate boldly and insistently, your many sins will be forgiven you. Then, in the age to be, as a debtor you to will love he God who is beyond all goodness and yet has compassion for you.

Thanks to Divine Providence, significant progress has occurred in Coptic studies at Claremont Graduate University (CGU) School of Religion during 2009. Here is a summary:

1) The Claremont Coptic Encyclopedia has started to take root. The goal is to develop an updated and continuously expanding web-based version of the Coptic Encyclopedia, which CGU acquired the right to do recently. One objective is to promote Coptic studies worldwide.

2) MA and PhD students: Dr. Gawdat Gabra, Visiting Professor of Coptic Studies at CGU, attracted high caliber students to specialize in Coptology. The career of each one of them is a great reward for our investment of effort and funds. Several students are at different stages of their research. Read one student's view of the future of Coptology:

http://www.stshenouda.com/AcademicPGM/PatriciaE30-Aug-2009.pdf

3) First Coptic graduate: Sarah Mehany became the first Copt to graduate from this program when she received her MA in May 2009. She took several courses with Dr. Gabra, who also supervised her MA thesis on “The Monastic Pachomian Rules Alive Today in Coptic Convents.” She enrolled in the PhD program and plans to continue her research in Coptology.

4) Courses taught by Dr. Gabra during the last three years include Coptic Art and Archeology, Coptic Monasticism, Coptic New/Old Testament and Liturgy, Coptic Sayings of the Desert Fathers, Coptic Hagiography, Egypt's Religious Heritage and Coptic Literature. See course descriptions at: http://www.cgu.edu/pages/6860.asp.

5) Public lecture series on Coptic topics has been well attended by faculty, students, Claremont residents and the Coptic community. His Grace Bishop Youssef was guest speaker on 1 Dec 09 and Prof. Nelly van Doorn-Harder on 22 March 09. See announcements at: http://www.cgu.edu/pages/5979.asp and an article at: http://www.stshenouda.com/AcademicPGM/MaryanneW26-July-2009.pdf.

6) Coptic liturgical music: Efforts to introduce its study has started, including performances by the Ecclesiastical Choirs of the Diocese of Los Angeles at three of the public lectures.

7) Academic tour of Coptic Egypt led by Dr. Gabra.  Deans, faculty and students participated in January 2008 and 2009. The tours were so successful that it will repeat in January 2010.

This progress was made possible by the generous contributions of many who offered prayers, efforts and funds.  St. Shenouda Coptic Society signed a pledge of $26,000 payable by 15 Jan 2010 for partial coverage of the above expenses. In addition, funds are needed for two student scholarships and creating the web-based Coptic Encyclopedia.

To enable this successful program to continue, please send your tax-deductible contribution to: St. Shenouda Coptic Society, 1701 S. Wooster Street, LA, CA 90035. Write in the memo: Coptic Studies at CGU.

Many employers offer matched funds for donations to educational institutions. Please contact us to assist you with the paper work.

The one who strives for pure prayer and wishes to lead his intellect to God without thoughts should master anger and be on guard against the thoughts arising from this. I mean, the thoughts that befall us out of mistrust, hatred, and resentment, which most often blind the intellect and ruin its heavenly condition. St. Paul also advised us thus, saying that one “should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling.”

O strange and inconceivable thing! We did not really die, we were not really buried, we were not really crucified and raised again, but our imitation was but a figure, while our salvation is in reality. Christ was actually crucified, and actually buried, and truly rose again; and all these things have been vouchsafed to us, that we, by imitation communicating in His sufferings, might gain salvation in reality.

+ Living Faith Classes
Topic: “The Twelve Days of Christmas: true origins”
Just before Christmas, we’ll look at the origins of the nonsensical and well-loved carol, The Twelve Days of Christmas, and see that in spite of many false urban rumors going around about it being a hidden form of Jesuit catechism, it is far more likely that this ancient carol may, in fact, recount a Christian pilgrim’s journey from England to the Holy Land, during the Nativity season.

The day when God is absent, when He is silent - that is the beginning of prayer. Not when we have a lot to say, but when we say to God “I can’t live without You.”

The principal vices – stupidity, cowardice, licentiousness, injustice – are the ‘image’ of the ‘earthy’ man. The principal virtues – intelligence, courage, self-restraint, justice – are the ‘image’ of the ‘heavenly’. man. As we have borne the image of the earthy, let us also bear the image of the heavenly (cf. I Cor. 15: 49).

Culture consists of socially acquired information through beliefs, values, knowledge, ideas, etc. that impact one’s behavior and attitude especially in the family setting. The change from a familiar environment to an unfamiliar one is faced by many Egyptian Christians in America.  This lecture will present how individuals adapt differently to a new culture and illustrate the challenges imposed during this adjustment period. The lecture will also explore the impact of individuals’ adaptation on their family relationships and the role one has in the family adaptation process. This will lead to the most important question: what is the impact of cultural adaptation on one’s spirituality?

His Grace Bishop Youssef has been Bishop of the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of the Southern United States since 1995. His monastic life began in 1986 after practicing medicine as an ENT specialist.  He started his ministry in America in 1989 serving as a priest for the Coptic congregation in Dallas, TX. He received a PhD in Marriage and Family Therapy from St. Mary’s University, San Antonio, TX in 2002. Among other projects in the diocese, His Grace Bishop Youssef established four institutions: a Family Ministry Program, the St. Athanasius Theological Seminary, the St. Mary & St. Moses Abbey in Corpus Christi, TX and the St. Mary Convent in New Smyrna, Florida.

The deeply spiritual and beautiful Coptic chants performed by the Ecclesiastical Choir are among the oldest liturgical genres still performed today.

The first kind of humility is to hold my brother to be wiser than myself, and in all things to rate him higher than myself, and simply, as that holy man said, to put oneself below everyone. The second kind is to attribute to God all virtuous actions. This is the perfect humility of the saints. It is generated naturally in the soul by the performance of the commandments. It is just like a tree bearing much fruit: it is the fruit that bends the branches and lowers them down, but when there is no fruit, the branches point upwards and grow straight.

Everything created by God is good and pure, for the Word of God has created nothing useless or unclean. For according to the Apostle, ‘we are a sweet savor of Christ in them that are being saved’ (2 Cor. 2:15). But the darts of the devil are varied and subtle, and he is always ready to trouble those of a simpler mind, and hinder the ordinary ascesis of the brethren, scattering among them thoughts of uncleanness and defilement.
