I had found this list originally when I was
researching Aleister Crowley and high level Masonic
infiltration of the U.S. government along with other
secret societies when I found THE CROWLEY LIST.I then
immediately copied and posted this to at least 70 of
the more than 90 Yahoo groups that I'm in-posted on
Jan 18th,2005 and again on Dec 13th,2005--this is why
it finally got back to DCIA Porter Goss and the rest
of the Criminals In Action at Langley.

Internet blows CIA cover - It's easy

TRIBUNE INVESTIGATION

Internet blows CIA cover
It's easy to track America's covert operatives. All
you need to know is how to navigate the Internet.

By John Crewdson - jcrewdson@...
Tribune senior correspondent
Published March 12, 2006

WASHINGTON -- She is 52 years old, married, grew up in
the Kansas City suburbs and now lives in Virginia, in
a new three-bedroom house.

Anyone who can qualify for a subscription to one of
the online services that compile public information
also can learn that she is a CIA employee who, over
the past decade, has been assigned to several American
embassies in Europe.

The CIA asked the Tribune not to publish her name
because she is a covert operative, and the newspaper
agreed. But unbeknown to the CIA, her affiliation and
those of hundreds of men and women like her have
somehow become a matter of public record, thanks to
the Internet.

When the Tribune searched a commercial online data
service, the result was a virtual directory of more
than 2,600 CIA employees, 50 internal agency telephone
numbers and the locations of some two dozen secret CIA
facilities around the United States.

Only recently has the CIA recognized that in the
Internet age its traditional system of providing cover
for clandestine employees working overseas is fraught
with holes, a discovery that is said to have
"horrified" CIA Director Porter Goss.

"Cover is a complex issue that is more complex in the
Internet age," said the CIA's chief spokeswoman,
Jennifer Dyck. "There are things that worked
previously that no longer work. Director Goss is
committed to modernizing the way the agency does cover
in order to protect our officers who are doing
dangerous work."

Dyck declined to detail the remedies "since we don't
want the bad guys to know what we're fixing."

Several "front companies" set up to provide cover for
CIA operatives and the agency's small fleet of
aircraft recently began disappearing from the
Internet, following the Tribune's disclosures that
some of the planes were used to transport suspected
terrorists to countries where they claimed to have
been tortured.

Although finding and repairing the vulnerabilities in
the CIA's cover system was not a priority under Goss'
predecessor, George Tenet, one senior U.S. official
observed that "the Internet age didn't get here in
2004," the year Goss took over at the CIA.

CIA names not disclosed

The Tribune is not disclosing the identities of any of
the CIA employees uncovered in its database searches,
the searching techniques used or other details that
might put agency employees or operatives at risk. The
CIA apparently was unaware of the extent to which its
employees were in the public domain until being
provided with a partial list of names by the Tribune.

At a minimum, the CIA's seeming inability to keep its
own secrets invites questions about whether the Bush
administration is doing enough to shield its covert
CIA operations from public scrutiny, even as the
Justice Department focuses resources on a two-year
investigation into whether someone in the
administration broke the law by disclosing to
reporters the identity of clandestine CIA operative
Valerie Plame.

Not all of the 2,653 employees whose names were
produced by the Tribune search are supposed to be
working under cover. More than 160 are intelligence
analysts, an occupation that is not considered a
covert position, and senior CIA executives such as
Tenet are included on the list.

Covert employees discovered

But an undisclosed number of those on the list--the
CIA would not say how many--are covert employees, and
some are known to hold jobs that could make them
terrorist targets.

Other potential targets include at least some of the
two dozen CIA facilities uncovered by the Tribune
search. Most are in northern Virginia, within a few
miles of the agency's headquarters. Several are in
Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Utah and Washington
state. There is one in Chicago.

Some are heavily guarded. Others appear to be
unguarded private residences that bear no outward
indication of any affiliation with the CIA.

A senior U.S. official, reacting to the computer
searches that produced the names and addresses, said,
"I don't know whether Al Qaeda could do this, but the
Chinese could."

Down on `The Farm'

For decades the CIA's training facility at Camp Peary,
Va., near historic Williamsburg, remained the deepest
of secrets. Even after former CIA personnel confirmed
its existence in the 1980s the agency never
acknowledged the facility publicly, and CIA personnel
persisted in referring to it in conversation only as
"The Farm."

But an online search for the term "Camp Peary"
produced the names and other details of 26 individuals
who according to the data are employed there.
Searching aviation databases for flights landing or
taking off from Camp Peary's small airstrip revealed
17 aircraft whose ownership and flight histories could
also be traced.

Although the Tribune's initial search for "Central
Intelligence Agency" employees turned up only
work-related addresses and phone numbers, other
Internet-based services provide, usually for a fee but
sometimes for free, the home addresses and telephone
numbers of U.S. residents, as well as satellite
photographs of the locations where they live and work.

Asked how so many personal details of CIA employees
had found their way into the public domain, the senior
U.S. intelligence official replied that "I don't have
a great explanation, quite frankly."

The official noted, however, that the CIA's credo has
always been that "individuals are the first person
responsible for their cover. If they can't keep their
cover, then it's hard for anyone else to keep it. If
someone filled out a credit report and put that down,
that's just stupid."

One senior U.S. official used a barnyard epithet to
describe the agency's traditional system of providing
many of its foreign operatives with easily
decipherable covers that include little more than a
post office box for an address and a non-existent
company as an employer.

Coverts especially important

And yet, experts say, covert operatives who pose as
something other than diplomats are becoming
increasingly important in the global war on terror.

"In certain areas you just can't collect the kind of
information you need in the 21st Century by working
out of the embassy. They're just not going to meet the
kind of people they need to meet," said Melvin
Goodman, who was a senior Soviet affairs analyst at
the CIA for more than 20 years before he retired.

The problem, Goodman said, is that transforming a CIA
officer who has worked under "diplomatic cover" into a
"non-official cover" operator, or NOC--as was
attempted with Valerie Plame--creates vulnerabilities
that are not difficult to spot later on.

The CIA's challenge, in Goodman's view, is, "How do
you establish a cover for them in a day and age when
you can Google a name . . . and find out all sorts of
holes?"

In Plame's case, online computer searches would have
turned up her tenure as a junior diplomat in the U.S.
Embassy in Athens even after she began passing herself
off as a privately employed "energy consultant."

The solution, Goodman suggested, is to create NOCs at
the very outset of their careers, "taking risks with
younger people, worrying about the reputation of
people before they have one. Or create one."

Shortage of `mentors'

But that approach also has a downside, in that "you're
getting into the problem of very junior, inexperienced
people, which a lot of veteran CIA people feel now is
part of the problem. Porter Goss has to double the
number of operational people in an environment where
there are no mentors. Who's going to train these
people?"

In addition to stepping up recruiting, Goss has
ordered a "top-down" review of the agency's
"tradecraft" following the disclosure that several
supposedly covert operatives involved in the 2003
abduction of a radical Muslim preacher in Milan,
Italy, had registered at hotels under their true names
and committed other amateurish procedural violations
that made it relatively easy for the Italian police to
identify them and for Italian prosecutors to charge
them with kidnapping.

You have probably learned by now that making money on the web is not easy
certainly not as easy as many sales pitches would have you believe.
The fact remains, however, that money making opportunities still abound on the
Internet. There are green pastures all around us and I believe smart marketers
will use the skills they have learned in our very crowded marketplace to their
great advantage elsewhere as well.

Where do you look for them? Well, Ive found that digging around the search
engines provides a wealth of information.

What foods are bad for you?

I've come to the conclusion that our food supply (across the entire
spectrum) is being poisoned.

1. The Christian Broadcasting Network was the first to report on the
dangers of Monosodium Glutamate (MSG).

2. The American Free Press confirmed my suspicions regarding Sodium
Nitrate (in it's May edition).

3. I 1st found out about the past censoring of Stevia by the FDA when
I visited a Christian political website long ago.

In addition: Long ago, our grandmothers matured at much later ages
(around 18 years old) – before the use of growth hormones in our meat
supply.

Could anyone give me a believable & sensible reason WHY this is
happening?

By entire spectrum, I mean – Past censoring of stevia, fluoride, MSG,
sodium nitrate, etc.

There is one theory that I've been thinking about though.

In 1969, my father came over to the US from South Korea. He's a
psychologist (I also once visited a Yahoo Club which promoted that
psychiatry was a sham).

Also, my uncle (he's someone high up in a pharmaceutical company, &
very rich) told me that back then, it was almost impossible for a
Korean to obtain a green card.

I'm now starting to believe that the ONLY reason my father was
allowed to get a green card back then was because of the medical
lobby (i.e., the AMA).

This is just something to consider.

Black OPS

Thank you Tim White of Denver for getting Patricia
Johnson-Holm and Al Bielek in contact. Without
everyone realizing working together is the answer to
making real progress. The evil side thinks that they
can win at all costs.[Remember at all costs means huge
damage to present day Earth]

Now further info is needed as soon as possible. This
info is that the so called extreme top secret
experimentation has to do with Time Travel via
manipulation of the reversal power of Vortex. This
goes right back to the pivotal point we on Earth are
up against. Remember that Rev. 20:1,2,3 refers to the
demonic force (unholy trinity) is soon to go to the
devil's triangle time vortex and travel a 1000 years
into the future. So the experimentation has to do with
how to reverse the 1000 year Time Travel and return
what was sent, back to the present.

The Boxcutters focus on 911 used to carry out the so
called highjacking, of course also has to do with the
meaning and the reference of box cutters (please see
previous posts and/or look below for more on this
subject) regarding the WTC official story 'flights.'
Because this symbolism had to do with cutting the
boxes open thinking that the demonic could break the
Seal of God to change the timetable of Revelations
20:1,2,3 and no matter what, return the demonic forces
to present day Earth to so called reign for 1000
years. Which brings up the meaning behind the 'Third
Reich' and so on. Of course you are not supposed to
put these pieces together.

And discrediting the message has been top priority
according to the very ones, this same data would help
the most. Which includes EVERYONE except the nine. And
the nine are only transported a thousand years into
the future when the rest of Revelations will play out.

Let's go thru the symbolism used starting with the Box
Cutters:

1. When sending the demonic forces thru to the future
via the 1000 year Time Vortex of the devil's Triangle,
certain steps will be taken.

A. Among which these steps will include boxing up
(which is in remembrance of the the Wood Cross) in
wood containers sealed with a particular manor using
Frankincense to seal each wooden box.

B. This wood sealed by Frankincense, brings Christ back
to the center focus.

C. This Focus on sealing with Frankincense is brought
out by being part of the Gifts to Jesus from the
Traveling Kings (Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh) gold
for the trip to Eygpt to save Christ, Myrrh meaning He
died for you on the Cross - but what does the
Frankincense refer to? Revelations 20:1,2,3.]

2. The location of the devil's Triangle is the reverse
of the coordinates of the original crash landing back
in 888AD by the 33 degree East of Lieksa Finland due
the War of the Heavens. Keep in mind that the 66
degrees above the 33rd degree are just that the 66 or
in other words the (6='man') slaves of the 666.

3. Notice the location of WTC (built with Public
Funds) was the location of the landing of
representatives of the Blessing of the House of David
as per the representative authorizing the original
British charter. It is this reference to the Blessing
the House of David you are NOT supposed to understand
and is spun in various versions such as in 'Holy Blood
Holy Grail') There is also huge amounts of symbolisms
having to do with 911 which have been conveniently
wiped off my PC etc.. So will take some time to
replace.

But this is quite a lot of material for your to
assimilate and research. So look forward to future
data or if you have saved old posts regarding
symbolism of 911 please repost them. Thank you---

4. NO MATTER WHAT demonic forces will be going
according to God's Timeline ****NOT**** yours.

Al Bielek talking to Patricia can Blow lid off Black
OPS
Mon Jun 19, 2006 01:07

Speaking of Blowing Cover or the Lid off things. READ
all about Al Bielek (Philidelphia Experiment and MUCH
MORE)was finally able to talk to Patricia
Johnson-Holm. Between the two much of the covert so
called above top secret info fit together into what
everyone should understand for their own sake.

Now the reason for coming forward so quickly about
tonights lengthy phone conversation is to have
protection for Al Bielek, since last time when he was
just given the phone number of Patricia he had a
severe Medical problem for the last 7+ weeks which
made communication not possible until now.

And just coincidentally Al Bielek's phone number just
happened to disappear repeatedly from Patricia's
files.

Bush Death List

Subject: You've heard of Clinton's 'Dead';
Here's a partial list of Bush 'Dead'...

A Roster of the Dead

This is a list of bodies, a roster of the dead, who
might have been called Witnesses had they not met
their untimely ends. Some of the names on this list
will give you pause. Some are rumor. Some you may find
incredible, and some frightening. Do your own research
http://www.google.com. You will draw your own
conclusions.

The above paragraph began the last edition of the Bush
Body Count. In previous editions, there were no
special criteria for adding bodies - only that they
could be related to the Bush family in some way, and
be dead. In fact, the original Bush Body Count started
as a parody of the so-called Clinton Death List.

Times have changed. The Bush Body Count is no longer a
parody, and many of the names have been removed. This
edition examines the scandals and misdeeds of the Bush
family generations, and lists the corpses they leave
in their wake.

Bush Went AWOL

Bodies

Sid Adger
Mr. Adger, a Houston oil supply company executive and
Bush family friend, died in 1996 of unknown causes.
Adger was the mysterious businessman who approached
General James Rose and asked him to help George W.
Bush avoid Vietnam by recommending him for a pilot
position with the National Guard.

General James Rose
General Rose recommended George W. Bush for a pilot
position with the Texas National Guard. He died of
unknown causes in 1993. He was immediately buried and
no autopsy was performed.

Lt. Colonel William Harris, Jr.
Lt. Col. William Harris was one of two commanding
officers who could not perform George W. Bush's annual
evaluation covering the year from May 1, 1972 to April
30, 1973. They stated in their filing that "Lt. Bush
has not been observed at this unit during the period
of this report." Fortunately for George W. Bush, Lt.
Col. Harris is not here to verify his 1973 statement.
He's dead.

Lt. Colonel Jerry B. Killian
Lt. Col. Jerry B. Killian was another of George W.
Bush's commanding officers. He cannot testify in a
court of law as to George W. Bush's dereliction of his
sworn duty. Lt. Col. Killian is dead.

James Downing Aalund
Mr. Aalund's name is the first on a long list of young
Texans who died in Vietnam. These young men did not
have influential fathers to pull the strings necessary
to get them into the Texas Air National Guard. If they
had been so lucky, they would surely have fulfilled
their responsibilities to the ANG, if only out of
gratitude that they did not have to die, thousands of
miles away in a strange land. They surely would not
have disappeared from duty for over a year, as did our
fearless leader George W. Bush.

Enron

Bodies

J. Clifford Baxter
Found dead in his car, shot in the head. Mr. Baxter
was vice chairman of Enron Corp. when he resigned in
May 2001. Enron has been hot copy lately with the
revelation that they were the largest campaign
contributors for George W. Bush. Was J. Clifford
Baxter a potential witness to Bush foreknowledge of
their wrongdoings? His death was ruled a suicide.

Charles Dana Rice
He was the senior vice president and treasurer of El
Paso Corp., an energy corporation swept up in the
recent energy scandal. Two months after the "suicide"
of Enron executive Clifford Baxter, in the midst of
questions about the accounting practices of El Paso
Corp., Charles Rice was found dead of a gunshot wound
to the head. His death was ruled a suicide.

James Daniel Watkins
His body was found on December 1, 2001 in the Pike
National Forest in Colorado, a gunshot wound to the
head. Mr. Watkins was a consultant for Arthur
Andersen, the accounting firm for Enron. He
disappeared on November 13 after he left work. He was
described as a devoted family man who always called
home if he were going to be late. Officials initially
said that the death was suspicious, but have changed
their tune and have ruled his death a suicide.

Commerce Secretary Ron Brown
He died in a plane crash on April 3, 1996. Was Ron
Brown the first Enron body? In 1995 Enron officials
accompanied Brown on a trade mission to India, and to
Russia in 1994. Speculation among right-wing whackos
suggests that our last duly-elected President, Bill
Clinton, was somehow responsible for his death, but we
wonder: was Secretary Brown privy to information that
would conclusively link George W. Bush to Enron greed
and corruption? Charles Meissner, Assistant Commerce
Secretary, also died in this crash.

Jake Horton
He was the senior ice-president of Gulf Power, a
subsidiary of Southern Company, a cohort of Enron in
the energy industry, and a major contributer to the
Bush agenda. According to reporter Gregory Palast
http://GregPalast.com and
http://www.guardian.co.uk/enron/story/0,11337,643422,00.html
, Horton knew of the company's appalling accounting
practices, and "... had no doubt about its illegal
campaign contributions to Florida politicans - he'd
made the payments himself. In April of 1989 Horton
decided to come clean with state officials, and
reserved the company jet to go confront company
officials. Ten minutes after takeoff the jet exploded.

Kennedy Assassination

Bodies

John Fitzgerald Kennedy
An internal FBI memo reported that on November 22 a
reputed businessman named George H. W. Bush reported
hearsay that a certain Young Republican had been
talking of killing the President when he came to
Houston. The Young Republican was nowhere near Dallas
on that date. According to a 1988 story in The Nation,
J. Edgar Hoover said in a memo that Mr. George Bush of
the CIA had been briefed on November 23rd, 1963 about
the reaction of anti-Castro Cuban exiles in Miami to
the assassination of President Kennedy. George H. W.
Bush has denied this, although he was in Texas and
cannot account for his whereabouts at the time.

Hale Boggs
He sat on the Warren Commission, which concluded that
President Kennedy was slain by a lone assassin. Later,
in 1971 and '72, Boggs said that the Warren Report was
false and that J. Edgar Hoover's FBI not only helped
cover up the JFK murder but blackmailed Congress with
massive wire-tapping and spying. He named Warren
Commission staff member Arlen Specter as a major
cover-up artist. Congressman Boggs' plane disappeared
on a flight to Alaska in 1972. The press, the
military, and the CIA publicly proclaimed the plane
could not be located. Investigators later said that
was a lie, that the plane had been found. On the plane
were Nick Begich, a very popular Democratic
Congressman, and Don Jonz, an aide to Mr. Boggs. All
were killed.

George de Mohrenschildt
A rich Russian oilman, he was described with his wife
as being the two people friendliest to Oswald at the
time of the assassination. De Mohrenschildt was the
man who moved Oswald to Dallas. In the late 1970's,
shortly before the first meeting of the House Select
Committee on Assassinations, de Mohrenschildt started
seeing a new doctor in town. He quickly became
mentally unstable, at which time his wife convinced
him to stop seeing the doctor. They moved away and
left a false forwarding address. On the same day that
the Committee tried to contact him about testifying,
he was found dead of a gunshot wound. In his personal
address book was the entry Bush, George H.W. (Poppy)
and Zapata Petroleum Midland (the oil company owned by
George H.W. Bush).

Mrs. E. Howard Hunt
In December 1972, while George H. W. Bush was at the
Republican National Convention, a United Airlines
flight carrying Mrs. Dorothy Hunt, CIA operative and
wife of Howard Hunt, (CIA operative and suspect in the
Kennedy assassination) crashed. Believed to be
carrying $25,000 in "hush money", she died in this
crash.

George H.W. Bush

Bodies

Gary Caradori
He was investigating Lawrence E. King, Jr., a very
influential black Republican who was also a friend of
George H.W. Bush. King was director of the Franklin
Community Credit Union in Omaha, Nebraska, and was
suspected of embezzling $40 million . The Nebraska
Senate questioned child prostitutes, who accused King
of running a child prostitution ring. One of these
children said that she saw George H.W. Bush at one of
King's parties. "Pronto", a newspaper in Barcelona,
Spain, reported that the scandal "appears to directly
implicate politicos of the state of Nebraska and
Washington DC who are very close to the White House
and George Bush himself". On July 11, 1990, Gary
Caradori was killed along with his 6-year old son in
the crash of his small plane, after a mid-air
explosion, the cause of which was never discovered. He
had told friends repeatedly in the weeks before his
death that he was afraid his plane would be sabotaged.

Orlando Letelier
He was torn to bits by a car bomb on the streets of
Washington DC just before he was to testify against
the Chilean dictator Pinochet. After the bombing, CIA
Director George H. W. Bush told the FBI that there had
been no Chilean involvement whatsoever. In 1991 the
post-Pinochet Chilean Supreme Court asked George H. W.
Bush if he would submit to questioning. BUSH REFUSED.

Ronni Moffit
She was Letelier's assistant. She and her husband were
riding in the car with Letelier when the bomb
exploded. Mr. Moffit survived. Ronni didn't.

Jack Delaney and Ted White
These young men were killed when pilot George H. W.
Bush abandoned his plane when it was hit by enemy
fire. Much has been made of this story - Bush
propaganda would have us believe that he was a hero.
An eyewitness to the event tells us otherwise: Chester
Mierzejewski, who was the turret gunner in another
plane, had an unobstructed view. He states that he saw
a "puff of smoke" come from Bush's plane and quickly
dissipate. He states that the plane was never on fire
and that Bush never attempted a water landing, which
was standard procedure, and which would have given Mr.
Delaney and Mr. White a chance.

Silent Voices

Bodies

Steve Kangas
His web site, Liberalism Resurgent, was meticulously
researched and presented such a problem to the "real
boss" of George Bush, Richard Scaife, that he hired a
private detective to look into Kangas' past. Steve
Kangas was found in a 39th-floor bathroom outside of
Scaife's offices at One Oxford Centre, in Pittsburgh,
an apparent suicide. Mr. Kangas, a very prolific
writer, left no note. He had brought a fully-packed
suitcase of clothes with him to Pittsburgh. He bought
a burglar alarm shortly before he left for Pittsburgh.
Why did he need a burglar alarm if he was going to
commit suicide? An avowed advocate of gun control, he
nevertheless bought a gun. What was he afraid of? Why
did he go to Pittsburgh? After his death, his computer
was sold for $150 and its hard drive wiped clean.
Everything in his apartment was thrown away.

Danny Casolaro
He was working on a book that tied together the
scandals surrounding the presidency of George H. W.
Bush. He told his friends he was going to "bring back"
the head of the Octopus. Instead, his body was found
in a hotel in Martinsburg, West Virginia, on August
10, 1991, an apparent suicide.

Mark Lombardi
He was an accomplished conceptual artist who, while
chatting on the phone with a banker friend about the
Bush savings and loan scandal, started doodling a
diagram and was inspired to create a complex series of
drawings and sketches that charted the details of the
scandal. According to the New York Times, "He was soon
charting the complex matrices of personal and
professional relationships, conflict of interest,
malfeasance and fraud uncovered by investigations into
the major financial and political scandals of the day;
to keep facts and sources straight, he created a
handwritten database that now includes around 12,000
3-by-5-inch cards."

On the evening of March 22, 2000, Mark Lombardi was
found hanging in his loft, an apparent suicide.

James Hatfield
Mr. Hatfield was the author of Fortunate Son, an
unauthorized biography of George W. Bush. The book
detailed Bush's cocaine use and cover up of a cocaine
arrest. He was found Wednesday, July 18, in a motel
room, an apparent suicide.

Prescott Bush

Bodies

William S. Farish
He was one of Prescott Bush's partners in business
deals with Adolph Hitler. He was devastated by the
intense grilling he received from the Senate about his
dealings with Nazis, and while Prescott Bush skated
free, Farish collapsed and died on November 29, 1942.

James Forrestal
He was U.S. Secretary of Defense, and become a problem
for Prescott Bush when he proposed racial integration
of the Armed Forces. On March 28, 1949, he was forced
out of office and flown on a military plane to Jupiter
Island in Florida. From there he was taken to Walter
Reed Army Hospital, where he was given insulin shock
treatments. He was shielded from all visitors except
his estranged wife. From "George Bush, the
Unauthorized Biography":

On May 22, Forrestal's body was found, his bathrobe
cord tied tightly around his neck, after he had
plunged from a sixteenth-story hospital window. The
chief psychiatrist called the death a suicide even
before any investigation was started. The results of
the Army's inquest were kept secret. Forrestal's
diaries were published, 80 percent deleted, after a
year of direct government censorship and rewriting

Texas Justice

Bodies

Karla Faye Tucker
She was executed in spite of enormous protest from the
public, even those religious groups that advocate the
death penalty. Even Pat Robertson thought that Karla
was truly repentant and asked George W. Bush to spare
her life. He refused. Afterward, in a Talk Magazine
interview, Bush mocked the woman whose death warrant
he had sanctioned, pursing his lips and whimpering,
"Please don't kill me!"

David Wayne Spence
David Wayne Spence was executed in Texas in 1997 in
spite of compelling evidence of his innocence. Two of
the State's witnesses were co-defendants who testified
to avoid the death penalty, one of whom changed his
story three times in response to discrepancies. He
later testified that D.A. Simons encouraged him to
alter his testimony. Two other witnesses for the State
were jailhouse snitches who recanted later and stated
that Simons offered them favors in exchange for
testimony. All of this and more was supposedly
reviewed by Governor George W. Bush, but Bush refused
to commute his sentence, and did not order the Board
of Pardons and Paroles to review his request for
clemency. It is a myth that a Texas Governor can do
nothing to stop executions; the Board will almost
always go with his recommendation. Bush washed his
hands of the matter and did nothing. Reasonable doubt
is not a factor in Texas justice.

Gary Graham
Gary Graham was convicted of the robbery and murder of
a white man in 1981. Nearly two weeks after the crime,
the state's prime witness could not pick Gary's
picture out of a photo line-up. Mr. Graham was
arrested with a 22 caliber pistol. The victim had been
killed with a 22, but the police firearms examiner
determined that Mr. Graham's gun DID NOT fire the
fatal bullet. Four witnesses said Gary Graham was with
them, miles away from the convenience store, when the
murder occured. All four took and passed polygraph
tests. George W. Bush, predictably, expressed his
faith in the Texas judicial system and allowed Mr.
Graham to be put to death. Mr. Graham maintained his
innocence to the end.

"Obsessive—Generous"

Toward a Diagram of Mark Lombardi

by Frances Richard

   printer friendly version

Who is James R. Bath?

A nodal point in Mark Lombardi's drawing George W.
Bush, Harken Energy and Jackson Stephens c. 1979-90,
5th Version, 1999, James R. Bath appears in the upper
lefthand corner of the 16 1/2" x 41" piece of paper.
The spatial syntax of Lombardi's drawings—which map in
elegantly visual terms the secret deals and suspect
associations of financiers, politicians, corporations,
and governments—dictates that the more densely lines
ray out from a given node, the more deeply that figure
is embroiled in the tale Lombardi tells. Thirteen
lines originate with or point to James R. Bath, more
than any other name presented. Among those linked to
this obscure yet central character are George W. Bush,
Jr., George H.W. Bush, Sr., Senator Lloyd Bentsen of
Texas, Governor John B. Connally of Texas, Sheik Salim
bin Laden of Saudi Arabia, and Sheik Salim's younger
brother, Osama bin Laden.

The drawing is done on pale beige paper, in pencil. It
follows a time-line, with dates arrayed across three
horizontal tiers. These in turn support arcs denoting
personal and corporate alliances, the whole comprising
a skeletal resume of George W. Bush's career in the
oil business. In other words, the drawing, like all
Lombardi's work, is a post-Conceptual reinvention of
history painting, a document of factually verifiable
yet extremely pared-down relationships limned in a
double light of international fame and cryptic
realpolitik. Or rather, the light is triple. For,
though he possessed the instincts of a private eye and
the acumen of a systems-analyst, Lombardi was of
course an artist, and from the raw material of
wire-service reports and books by political
correspondents, he drew not only chronicles of covert,
high-stakes trade, but technically pristine and
sensually compelling visual forms. His project's
sources are profoundly art-historical, even as they
are obviously journalistic, and the creative tension
between abstracted, self-propelling image and direct
verbal communication propels his work. Delicately
balanced and gracefully enlaced, these lines and
circles read from across the room as purely retinal
explorations of two-dimensional space. Their stylized
complexity, however, lures the eye in, to a point
where language registers as legible and referentiality
asserts itself through the scrim of form. A narrative
emerges. Looking shifts toward reading, and Lombardi's
one-two punch lands.

James R. Bath, it turns out, is a Texas businessman, a
sometime aeronautics broker whose firm, Skyway
Aircraft Leasing, LTD., was a Cayman Islands front
amassing money for use by Oliver North in the
Iran-Contra affair. Bath also served as an agent
minding American interests for a quartet of Saudi
Arabian billionaires, one of whom was Sheik Salim bin
Laden, the oldest son and heir of Sheik Mohammed bin
Laden, father of fifty-four children including Osama.
According to reports by the Houston Chronicle, the
Wall Street Journal, Time, and others, Bath did
business in his own name but with the Saudis' money;
tax records indicate that he collected a fee of 5% on
their multimillion dollar American investments. In
1979, Bath contributed $50,000 to Arbusto Energy, a
limited-partnership controlled by George W. Bush. As
Bath had little capital of his own, oil insiders trace
the funds to his silent partners, specifically Salim
bin Laden. Such cash infusions from Bath's client
sheiks and George H.W. Bush's cartel cronies could
not, however, prop Arbusto up. The venture collapsed
in 1981 and merged into the Spectrum 7 Energy
Corporation. Spectrum—still with W. at the
helm—evolved through more near-failures and mergers
into Harken Energy, which, in 1990, embarked upon a
sweetheart deal to drill oil wells in Bahrain—this
regardless of the fact that Harken had never drilled
an overseas well, nor a marine well of any kind. Oil
industry cognoscenti again assume that the Bahrain
contract was orchestrated as a favor from the Saudis
to the American chief executive and his family. The
favor paid. On June 20, 1990, George W. Bush sold
two-thirds of his Harken stock at $4 per share. Eight
days later, Harken finished the second quarter with
losses of $23 million; the stock promptly lost 75% of
its value, finishing at just over $1 per share. Two
months later, Iraq invaded Kuwait, and the Gulf War
began. All these events are cited in Lombardi's
drawing.

Meanwhile, another Bath associate, Sheik Khalid bin
Mafouz, was involved in the collapse (in July, 1991)
of the Bank of Credit and Commerce, International,
better known as BCCI. Among the sins of the
Pakistani-owned BCCI were money-laundering on behalf
of Colombian druglords, arms brokering, bribery, and
aid to terrorists; when this cabal came unglued,
millions of investors in seventy-three countries lost
their life-savings. Although Bath was not personally
implicated in the BCCI fiasco, an estranged business
partner claims that that he, Bath, had been recruited
to the CIA in 1976-77 by George Bush, Sr., after
serving in the Texas Air National Guard as the buddy
of George Bush, Jr. (in 1972, the two young men
narrowly escaped arrest for cocaine possession).
Bath's putative CIA connections, the Agency's
operations in the Middle East, and the adventures of
BCCI thus compose a kind of symmetry. The byzantine
saga of BCCI's demise is plotted in the drawing that
is perhaps Lombardi's masterwork, BCCI-ICIC-FAB, c.
1972-1991, (4th Version), 1996-2000. Unveiled in the
landmark P.S. 1 exhibition "Greater New York" in 2000,
this piece signaled Lombardi's arrival at the cusp of
art world fame; it is now in the permanent collection
of the Whitney Museum. A wall-size panel schematizing
twenty years of suspect alliances amongst scores of
players, BCCI-ICIC-FAB… was the last major work the
artist made before his death.

For those who followed the BCCI scandal—or the Harken
Energy/insider trading scandal, or the Banca Nazionale
del Lavoro scandal, or the Lincoln Savings & Loan
scandal, or any of Lombardi's pet juggernauts—these
diagrams summarize rather than amend available
knowledge. He was always careful to explain that he
did not conduct primary investigations, but culled his
information exclusively from the public record; a
basic Internet search yields multiple references to
the Bath/Bush/bin Laden connection. However, ferreting
out and adding up in one's own head the myriad
fragments scattered across the infotainment megascape
is a very different experience from standing before
Lombardi's rhythmic plots. In the strangely
contemplative and yet galvanizing presence of these
images, the graphic equilibrium with which he invests
his subjects is transformative. To track these events
in the context of the drawings is to experience their
import freshly, to undergo a shock of mixed
recognition and surprise.

It is also to enter into a subtly intimate dialogue
with the mind that laid them out in this order.
Palpably handmade and unencumbered by technological
gadgetry of any kind, the drawings bespeak the
individual effort of a single consciousness, a
watchdog enthusiast profoundly engaged with matters
most of us find impossible to manage. Filtering the
dizzying spectrum of contemporary power relations
through his idiosyncratic vision, Lombardi imposed
upon the actions of these profligate VIPs a
compositional harmony that in itself constitutes a
critique. Like Diego Velasquez in the court of Las
Meninas or Jan van Eyck in the home of Giovanni
Arnolfini and His Bride, the incisive social
portraitist has quietly included his own observing
presence in the picture.

"I am pillaging the corporate vocabulary of diagrams
and charts…rearranging information in a visual format
that's interesting to me and mapping the political and
social terrain in which I live," Lombardi told the
videographer Andy Mann in February, 1997. "He was
totally consumed by the stories he was following,"
recalls his friend and collector Mickey Cartin.

I loved talking with Mark about his work. His eyes
would come alive, almost as if they were pushing his
glasses away from his face…He worked alone on a
solitary project, a massive inventory of facts and the
challenge of configuring them in a legible fashion, in
a small, lonely room, an internal process. But when he
had a listener, he came alive. If you were willing to
listen, and I was eager, he could go on for hours…I
believe that what really drove the work was the lust
for information and the informed artistic sense that
could translate it into a visually attractive whole.

True to their origin as traces of mental process, the
images were not static, and in a sense were never
complete. When new intelligence surfaced, Lombardi
would revise existing drawings to include it,
interweaving the divagations of his own awareness with
events unfolding in the news. Since this is, de facto,
what we all have to do each day, Lombardi's personal
feats of attention segue again toward the public
realm, this time not as comments upon the tawdry
activities of bigshots, but as testimonies to the
thoughts of Everyperson trying to navigate mediatized
reality. "I wish that he were here now," says
gallerist Deven Golden, "to give us his overview of
the world stage, which I know would be delivered with
a puff of his cigarette through a Cheshire smile."
More than one colleague has echoed Golden's sentiment,
missing not only Mark Lombardi's friendship but the
drawings he might have made in recent months, wishing
for his particular parsing of what are now known as
"the events of September 11th"—not to mention the
"events" of the November 2000 election.

Making this sleek yet polymorphous art, Mark Lombardi
had achieved notable success. But his success was
recent, and it is difficult for the reputation of an
emerging artist to survive untimely death—especially
when the work is ostensibly dependent upon the
ephemera of headline news. Eighteen months after his
suicide, however, Lombardi's reputation flourishes.
Major collections are acquiring the drawings; they are
regularly included in important thematic exhibitions.
In agreement with the Lombardi family, Joe Amrhein of
Williamsburg's Pierogi Gallery has undertaken
management of the estate, negotiating with collectors,
administering exhibition loans, and addressing issues
of conservation and display. Encouraged by Amrhein,
critic Robert Hobbs and the Independent Curators
International have recently committed to mounting a
retrospective—venue, scheduling, and number of works
to be determined. In anticipation of such
developments, a group of artists, gallerists, critics,
and curators who support Mark Lombardi's legacy have
graciously contributed their thoughts and
reminiscences to this article.Mark Lombardi was born
in Syracuse in 1951, and received his B.A. in art
history from Syracuse University in 1974. Upon
graduation, he moved to Texas at the invitation of
curator Jim Harithas, who had been appointed director
of Houston's Contemporary Arts Museum. Lombardi worked
as a curatorial assistant to Harithas, as an arts
librarian at the public library, and as a gallery
assistant and preparator, eventually becoming owner
and director of Square One Gallery and Lombardi
Gallery. In 1994 he abandoned neo-geo abstract
painting, and embarked upon a fresh body of work. The
vision for this novel enterprise arrived in an
apparent "eureka!" moment—doodling on a napkin while
talking on the phone. "Knowing his mind, I'm sure he
looked at that napkin and saw possibilities for the
next twenty years of work," says his close friend,
painter Greg Stone. "He thought in branching
structures. He would have seen the whole instantly."
According to Deven Golden, whose gallery represented
Lombardi from 1998 until its closure in 2000, Lombardi
gravitated toward the new idea because "the diagrams
were more visually interesting than his paintings.
And, perhaps just as importantly, they pulled together
everything Mark was interested in—drawing,
social/commercial interactions and their hierarchies,
and politics—into a single pursuit."

Showing this new material, Lombardi began to gain
recognition in Houston, where he was already well
known after two decades of administrative involvement
in the arts. Solo shows were installed at the Lawndale
Art and Performance Center (where he was chosen by
guest curator Paul Schimmel, of LA MoCA) and at Robert
McClain & Co. At the latter space, in September 1996,
Lombardi met Williamsburg-based artist Fred Tomaselli,
who told him about Joe Amrhein and Pierogi Gallery.

Mark knew my work and we struck up a conversation. He
said he was thinking about moving to New York—I gave
him my number and told him to look me up. I thought he
was a riot and that his work was really good….He was
funny and manic with a racing mind that was always
trying to "connect the dots." He seemed to be a
perpetual student of interdisciplinary
information—which is so much more interesting than
people who talk about art all the time….Mark needed a
good honest dealer who would be "into" his work for
the right reasons. After we discussed what it was that
he wanted, we both thought that Joe would be the
perfect guy.

Lombardi moved to Williamsburg in 1997. A series of
small but successful group shows ensued, beginning
with "Selections: Winter 1997" at the Drawing Center.
Lombardi also established contact with Amrhein, though
no specific planning on his part to court Pierogi
Gallery was obvious to Amrhein when they met.

I had walk-ins who would stop by the gallery to show
me their work, and Mark was one of them. He came in
basically off the street, and we went over his bio
quickly—he had work at the Drawing Center at the time.
He had slides with him, which were difficult to read,
but when I talk to artists I look for enthusiasm and
confidence, and he had that—he was very compelling
about the corporate vernacular that he was using. So
later he brought in some drawings, and I was amazed by
them. It took a few meetings, but I took a piece and
hung it in the office, and then I did a studio visit,
and we decided to do a show.

"Silent Partners" opened at Pierogi in December, 1998,
followed by the group exhibition "Why Can't We All
Just Get Along?" at Deven Golden Fine Art, and an
invitation to join Golden's roster. Lombardi seemed to
be in his element, relishing the social math of the
gallery scene. "An art lifer, I thought," remembers
artist Deborah Ripley. "He was a booster," recalls
Roebling Hall gallerist Christian Viveros-Fauné.

He liked the shows we were putting on, and he would
come around and look and talk. He was generous. Not
shy about stuff he liked….He was great at explaining
his own work. He had been a gallerist, and all his
reflexes would come out.

Mickey Cartin, who, like Amrhein, was introduced to
Lombardi by Fred Tomaselli, agrees:

I was immediately struck by Mark's enthusiasm and
authenticity. Here was a guy who knew his way around
the art world. He knew what it took to make a career,
the right people to hang around with, how to draw
attention to himself, which buttons to push, but these
were not the things that mattered to him. He was more
interested in fact-finding and record-keeping, in how
to convey information and document the underground
business world. His project was unique, and his
dedication to it astounded me.

Such encomiums to an artist's lack of ego while
acknowledging his skill in knowing "which buttons to
push" could sound dubious, but part of the impression
Lombardi made upon his new community seems to have
arisen precisely from this combination of practiced
sociability and genuine ebullience. "I would ask for
advice on basic art 'business' questions, and he was
very generous," remembers artist Beth Campbell. "Mark
was a very generous person, very open and honest,"
echoes gallerist Becky Kerlin, who showed Lombardi's
work at Gallery Joe in Philadelphia. Golden tells the
story of his first meeting with Lombardi, not as an
artist on the make, but as an art mover unpacking
someone else's work in Golden's space. The dealer
remembers particularly that the art handler paused to
look at and comment thoughtfully upon the current
show.

That clarified his motivations for me…. Mark never
asked me to come by his studio. That is, he did not
"hit" on me when he was delivering artwork to my
gallery. My seeing his work at Pierogi was just
happenstance—stopping by to see what show Joe had up
and seeing Mark's work hanging in Joe's office.

Favorable reviews appeared by Roberta Smith in The New
York Times, Raphael Rubinstein in Art in America, and
Boris Moshkovits in Flash Art; synergy began to build
through word-of-mouth introductions and coincidental
sightings of the work. P.S. 1 senior curator Carolyn
Christov-Bakargiev, for example, saw a piece in the
1999 group show "Monumental Drawings" at Exit Art. The
next year she brought Lombardi into "Greater New
York."

"It seemed like he was having a great time of it—a
dream come true," says Tomaselli. "He had a lot of
opportunities opening up that he seemed very excited
about….He felt that he would be in the Biennials soon,
and of course he would have been," recalls Hilary Ann
Maslon, Lombardi's girlfriend in the last year of his
life. Christian Viveros-Fauné concurs:

The temperature was going up…he was making a living
doing the drawings. That might have come as a shock to
him. The standard story is that if you're a
forty-something artist and you haven't made it by
then, you're not going to make it. It might have
thrown him for a loop. [But] he was minutes away from
being in every big show around.

On March 22nd, 2000, less than a month after the
triumphal opening at P.S.1, Mark Lombardi hung himself
in his apartment. "Mark was about a year away from
really connecting with museum collections, so I'm just
following up for him on what he would have been able
to do if he were around," says Joe Amrhein. In
practice, this means honoring an arrangement Lombardi
made with Amrhein in the midst of the hubbub
surrounding "Greater New York."

He was inundated, and he called me and said, "I want
you to take all the work." Curators and collectors,
and even other artists were calling his studio; people
were asking for this and that all the time, and he
couldn't handle it. Deven had closed his gallery by
that point, so it just seemed the most logical thing
for me to bring all the work here, and have people
come here to see it.

Amrhein estimates that Lombardi gave him eighty
drawings. Roebling Hall, where Lombardi had
participated in a group show called "World Trade" in
2000, also had a few pieces, as did Kerlin's Gallery
Joe. Amrhein explains, "Mark was only making this work
for about a six-year period, so there isn't tons left.
Maybe ten of the large, finished drawings." These
highly refined examples—with prices currently ranging
from ten to twenty thousand dollars—are accompanied by
smaller drawings in various states, from finished
pieces to rough notebook studies. Stylistically the
material ranges from horizontally-oriented works like
George W. Bush, Harken Energy and Jackson Stephens to
the tighter, more circular structures that developed
out of the time-line format. Pierogi also has the
prototype for a new display format Lombardi was
considering, a drawing transferred onto plexiglass and
mounted in a light-box. Undergirding these primary
visual documents are Lombardi's library of reference
books and voluminous files of index cards, on which he
cross-referenced his exhaustive reading and Internet
research by noting particulars about each figure in a
given series.

Lombardi referred to these pieces as "narrative
structures," a phrase that emphasizes not only the
dramatic chronologies embodied within the drawings,
but the sequential or accreting process by which they
were constructed. Such emphasis on process poses
interesting questions for those now interested in
exhibiting the work, viz., how to contextualize the
finished images with the preparatory sketches and
research material. Though Lombardi was ambivalent
about the relationship of this back-matter to the
polished works on paper, the well-thumbed books and
thousands of index cards eloquently illustrate the
obsessive, almost performative nature of his endeavor.
Not surprisingly, "obsessive" is the adjective his
friends most often choose—along with "generous"— to
describe the man and his art. In combination, the two
terms epitomize the figure of the artist as compulsive
articulator, a solitary node tying collective
experience together. The drawings' overt narrative of
swashbuckling venality thus rests upon a metanarrative
about the dedicated monomaniac who gathers up the
threads and recounts the story.

Both Golden and Cartin stress the step-by-step inquiry
through which each piece evolved. As Golden tells it:

You will often notice that his drawings have
indications of which version they are. Version 1 would
never be marked as such—this would be the first
lay-out sketch, where Mark would try to get a handle
on which information would be included, and in what
relationship. Version 2 would lay out the various
players, and assign them proportional space—this would
often change between versions 2 and 3. Version 3 would
be an "all but finished" drawing, about medium sized,
that had all the players in their orbits. Version 4
would be the final version, and would include the
addition of red pencil describing "final results" for
characters and corporations, i.e. "Gerald Bull found
murdered in hotel room."…Mark would supply a written
essay or index for the exhibition that gave a one or
two paragraph description of each conspiracy.

Cartin outlines a similar procedure:

The rules for the drawings seemed pretty clear. Maybe
like this: Begin by learning about an immense criminal
conspiracy. Then, 1) Get all the facts that exist. 2)
Create a time-line or some spatial relationship in
which to order them. 3) Create a uniform
representational system, e.g. red lines for one type
of event, broken lines for another, etc. 4) Test the
schematic plan on smaller sheets; no need for clear
order or neatness on these test studies. 5) Create a
composition that will make visual sense. 6) If another
fact is uncovered, create an updated version of the
drawing. In this way, Mark developed a system…a set of
rules that governed the outcome and a commitment not
to deviate from them, [with]…an insistence on a
product that finished with a visual coherence, beauty
if you will.

To illustrate this layered approach for collectors,
Amrhein has made it a policy to assemble packets of
working drawings to accompany large, finished pieces
when they are sold—recent sales to the Whitney, the
Altoids Curiously Strong Collection, and the Jewish
Museum follow this pattern. Conservation of the
drawings' inherent interrelationships is important,
Amrhein feels, because

it reveals the process; the sketches inform each
other. The lineage should be set up that way because
in a sense they're all one piece, and when the
drawings are shown, it's nice to have the
contextualizing group.

Amrhein has not included cards in the packets of
drawings accompanying large-scale acquisitions. "I
don't break up the index cards. The files are one
complete sort of research device, an object in and of
itself. I would not consider it a piece of art work,
but it is an amazing document." In the same vein, he
has held back from sale a set of rough images that he
hopes to preserve as a microcosm of Lombardi's graphic
vocabulary.

There's a group of about thirty early sketches that
are unbelievable—a museum should take all of them,
because to have them as a body of work in and of
itself would be amazing, to have them in one place,
where everyone could see them. They're so intuitive
and loose that they belong together—there are some
rogue pieces among the working sketches that stand
alone, but this body of work should be kept intact.

Influencing not only the contours of a given
installation but the relative value of process versus
product within the larger body of work, the role
assigned to supporting materials in the future will
clearly have a strong impact on the critical appraisal
of Lombardi's oeuvre. Most specifically, perhaps, the
decision to include the research materials in formal
presentations of the work emphasizes what most
observers agree to call the neo-Conceptual basis of
Lombardi's idea, raising corollary questions about
historical precedents for the project or lineages in
which it might be situated.

These questions were equally valid, of course, in his
lifetime. Golden remembers that "possible ways to
present the work were a constant discussion," and
exhibitions personally installed by the artist solved
the problem by various means. No secondary materials
were included in the Pierogi show or at Roebling Hall.
"I told him, 'It would be really great to see your
process,' Amrhein recalls. "He was on the fence about
it. I was fascinated by the cards, but he didn't want
to reveal that; he thought it was a side element, a
private code." Similar conversations seem to have
taken place each time Lombardi hung a show. "Vicious
Circles: Drawings" at Deven Golden Fine Art in 1999
included "some very preliminary sketches…to give
people an idea of how the drawings grew." Finally,
when Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev installed
BCCI-ICIC-FAB… with Lombardi at P.S. 1, they chose to
present a selection of sketches, books, and index
cards. Christov-Bakargiev remembers that the artist
was excited by the new presentation, and the "Greater
New York" experience provides a model for ways in
which the installation of a retrospective might be
handled. As plans develop for the ICI show, Amrhein's
discussions with curator Robert Hobbs have raised the
possibility of presenting a vitrine with books and
index cards. They might also collect, for the first
time in an exhibition context, all seven successive
versions of a particular drawing titled World Finance
Corporation of Miami, Florida c. 1970 - 79 (this one
chosen simply because all seven versions remain
accessible to Pierogi). Installing such a series would
allow viewers to walk through the structural evolution
of a specific narrative, and thus discover for
themselves how Lombardi's clean and carefully
calibrated final forms modulate the diagrammatic
content. In general, those considering the impact of a
large-scale solo show seem to agree that the inclusion
of developmental drawings and objects is necessary, as
long as the fluctuant yet vivid line between
preliminary and perfected versions of the drawings is
maintained.

"His library fascinated me, and I saw his card-file as
an object of intrigue in itself, like a drawing folded
up and tucked back into its womb," muses Mickey
Cartin.

[But] the composition was almost as important as the
fact-filled story he was telling. If not, the work
might have just ended in the form of the index card
files. Those files, or each individual, atomic fact
upon each individual card, could be seen as the object
of art in itself, in a Duchampian sense…If Mark had
stopped with the cards, then I would be much more
inclined to think of him as a Conceptual artist.

For Viveros-Fauné,

His reputation will hang on the project itself. It's
centered on the big, finished drawings, obviously. But
thinking back through the work to the process is
important. The number of index cards—what is it,
10,000?—some extreme number. I would install those,
and the books. When he showed at Roebling Hall, Mark
didn't want to. He felt the work spoke for itself, and
obviously he was right. But it's brilliant to consider
that level of involvement, that level of dedication.
You get the minute attention to detail, the precision,
the psychotic character of his interest.

For Golden,

As interesting as his index cards, notes, and library
were, they were not actually his art, any more than
any other artist's sketchbooks and notes are art. That
is not to deny their immense interest, and I certainly
agreed with showing the index cards at P.S. 1….But I
think that Mark and I generally felt, as far as
showing in a gallery situation, that the focus should
be on his art. That is why for his solo show at my
gallery we highlighted the drawing even over the
content—which, after all, had a way of speaking for
itself.

The "speaking for itself" that both Viveros-Fauné and
Golden "hear" in the project underlines Lombardi's
interest in creating traditional (i.e. non-Conceptual)
objects of beauty, available for aesthetic
contemplation without theoretical buttressing. Such
"speaking" is part of the project's narrativity, its
interest in non-difficult or transparent
communication. Lombardi's webs of conspiracy may lead
the mind to boggle, but they are not hard to read and
do not require extensive art-historical background to
understand. As Viveros-Fauné puts it, "His work is a
kind of high-end tabloid, and that's part of its
punch." Here, again, Lombardi doubles back upon
Conceptual examples. His patterns conceptualize
narration, but also depart from the visually
restricted, anti-pictorial grammar of high
Conceptualism. What Viveros-Fauné calls "Pop
Conceptualism" encourages the viewer to consider the
implications of reading current-events as art, even as
its geometric elegance appeals directly the eye.
Presenting nothing but data and pattern, Lombardi
reminds us that data is pattern; his use of media
(paper and pencil; books and magazines) is so
apparently simple that simplicity dissolves into
itself, problematizing the very concept of
"mediation." Simultaneously revoking and reinscribing
sensuality, the marks of pencil on paper—basic tools
of notetaking as well as draughtsmanship—purge the
work of overt decoration in good Conceptual fashion.
But they also insist upon tactility and gesture, an
expressiveness not typically associated with
Conceptualist strategies. Similarly, the index cards
(again handwritten, on paper) accentuate the origin of
the object in disembodied idea, but also stain that
imagined purity with the sweat of hands-on study.

"It's a human being mapping human activity, and it's
beautiful, even if the facts are hideous. People
respond to that," says Greg Stone.

Seeing the work they feel connected to it. They
realize, "This is part of the world; this is not
divorced from normal, worldly experience." Mark's
drawings talk to everyone, just as he would talk to or
hang out with anyone.

Significantly, these "real-world" responses often
involve law enforcement personnel, corporate-style
institutions, and journalists—the very professionals
whose information vocabularies Lombardi "pillaged."
Stone tells, for example, about the time he brought a
friend who wrote for the Wall Street Journal to see
George W. Bush, Harken Energy and Jackson Stephens.

He was riveted—he knew every character. He stood there
poring over it for forty minutes murmuring "Oh, my
God…" Then he went back to his office and looked it
up—the Journal had reported on the link between Bush
and bin Laden, and Mark probably got his information
from that article. But my friend said he hadn't fully
understood the implications until he saw it all laid
out that way.

Painter David Brody invited his cousin, a private
investigator, to see the Pierogi show. "He was
fascinated because, as he told me, 'This is exactly
the kind of thing I do when I'm on a case.' " Joe
Amrhein, meanwhile, recounts the story of an unnamed
corporate art collection whose enthusiasm waned
suddenly:

They were very excited about acquiring the work until
their legal department had a look at it. Then they had
to back off, because some of the names that appeared
in the piece were sitting on their board of directors.

Most spectacularly, Whitney curator Lawrence Rinder,
who brought BCCI-ICIC-FAB… into the Museum, reports
that "one curious event involving this piece occurred
recently when, following the September 11th attacks,
the FBI requested permission to examine it." Rinder
does not discuss the agents' findings. But the picture
of federal authorities trooping through the Whitney to
read Lombardi's rendering of history blurs the always
wobbly art/life line into an infinite regression, a
situation Lombardi would undoubtedly have appreciated.

In this hall of mirrors it is important to bear in
mind, however, Lombardi's insistence that his work was
always aesthetic, never investigative. "I asked Mark,"
Stone remembers, "'How would you feel if some shady
character bought your work just to hide it from the
public and shield himself from nasty revelations?' 'I
could only hope I'm that important,'" Lombardi
replied. Maslon recalls,

I asked him a couple of times if he ever felt that he
might be putting his life on the line with his work.
He had a nonchalant attitude about that. He considered
it a possibility, but because all the information he
was tying together had been published—nothing was
conjured or guessed—he waived his doubts. He was very
critical of people who used speculative information to
create conspiracy theories.

For Cartin, Lombardi was compelling, both as a friend
and as an artist, precisely because of this blur,
which in his view extended from the social phenomena
of banking and government to the interior structures
of personal psychology.

I take an interest in people who are so obsessed with
their life's work that they cannot help themselves, or
edit their thoughts, or at times even make sense, so
excited do they become when another human being
expresses an interest in their ideas. This passion and
extreme inner focus is what got me so interested in
Mark. I guess you could say that all artists' work, if
it is authentic, is an expression of their inner
selves, their emotions, ideas, intellect. Maybe Mark
was trying to make sense out of his own emotional
disorganization, as he was organizing and working out
a system for exhibiting the facts he had assembled.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What went wrong for Mark Lombardi? "People were lining
up to meet him. His whole life was about to change,"
says Greg Stone. "He had what every artist is looking
for; it was all happening." Most acquaintances agree
that, as Stone asserts, "He was ambitious. Mark wanted
to be a famous artist. No doubt about it." Fewer saw
the tension that the ostensible gratification of this
ambition seemed to cause. "Joe said to me a couple of
times, 'I think there's really something wrong with
Mark,'" remembers Amrhein's partner, Susan Swenson.
"But he always seemed so together." "He got caught,"
Stone says.

He was fascinated by the evil of the people he was
drawing, and he had bargained with the devil, in a
way. He was having relationship problems; he was
getting paranoid and sleep-deprived. We were supposed
to have dinner, and we could never schedule it. "We've
got to do this," I said, and Mark said, "Yeah, we
better, because time is running out." Three weeks
later he was dead. He was numbering his own days.

"Mark was obviously very obsessive," says Maslon.

About his work, his career, our relationship. I was
involved with him for a year, so I was just getting to
know him and really found out a lot more about him
after his death. So, with many limitations, I can tell
you what I observed. Mark had a lot of dichotomies.
Maybe one of them was that he craved a very orderly,
safe, and certain environment, but certainly flirted
with danger in his work. He completely cut himself off
from the outside world when he worked, and he worked
intensively for long hours, often not going out or
talking to people for two or three days.…He would also
fall into deep depressions, but he didn't show them to
me—at least not in any obvious way. He would tell me,
though, that he had been depressed.

Like Amrhein, Christian Viveros-Fauné now wonders if
he should have heard a warning in Lombardi's request
that his gallerists take work out of his studio. "It
sounded reasonable at the time. Now it seems like he
might have been prepping himself for something. But a
lot of this is just Monday-morning quarterbacking."
Such speculation is, of course, inevitable in
community where there has been a shocking loss. "There
has been a lot of collective soul-searching,"
Viveros-Fauné continues.

We've all talked it through a lot. Everyone seems to
feel that Mark was always slightly on edge—stable, but
slightly unstable, you know? He carried it off with
such nonchalance. We were all friends with him. We all
liked him. We all respected him. But none of us were
close to him. Mark was a great bullshitter. I didn't
know much about his past. He'd talk about Texas, about
the gallery, he'd talk your ear off, but not about
personal stuff. He talked a blue streak, put
everything on the table, but he wasn't talking about
himself.

Both Maslon and Swenson quote one of Lombardi's
sisters who told them, in Maslon's words, "that she
felt, when he moved to New York, that it was the
beginning of the end for him. I think she sensed that
Mark liked to have a safe, controlled environment, and
New York City is the antithesis of that." Several
friends refer cautiously to bouts of excessive
drinking and other addictive habits, and close
observers admit that in spite of his success, as
Golden puts it, "there's no doubt that Mark was going
through a rough patch." His truck had been totaled
while parked on the street; he talked of leaving New
York for Australia. Maslon states frankly that when
she returned from a trip to Brazil immediately after
the "Greater New York" opening, she found that "he was
acting very strange—very manic, very erratic. It
looked like he hadn't slept in a week."

Those who noticed this apparent sleep-deprivation and
knew about its cause return to the circumstances as a
possible catalyst for Lombardi's breakdown. Some ten
days before the "Greater New York" opening, a
sprinkler system in his live/work space malfunctioned.
Rusty water destroyed a number of drawings, including
the version of BCCI-ICIC-FAB… that Christov-Bakargiev
had already selected for P.S. 1. "Mark's studio and
apartment was, literally, a dark hole," as Golden
describes it, and at the time of the sprinkler
accident, both the culminating expression of his
current body of and a mock-up for a new formal
experiment were packed into this inner sanctum.

Maybe the whole space was 300 square feet, and I think
he had one window. It was permeated with the smell of
cigarette smoke. There were drawings piled under the
bed, and he would spread them out on the kitchen table
for me to look at. On one wall he had the very large
backlit plexiglass piece, more a prototype than
anything else, and on his longest wall he had the
large BCCI drawing. He considered it his Ur-piece
because 80% of the conspirators of his later works
showed up somewhere in the BCCI scandal.

"Mark knew 'Greater New York' would be huge for him,
and he stayed up for days in a row redoing the BCCI
drawing. I don't think he ever recovered," Greg Stone
declares. Still, Stone acknowledges that Lombardi was
pleased with the remade piece. Amrhein agrees on both
counts.

I think the manic period of remaking the drawing was a
big element in his psychological deterioration. Of
course there were other factors. But I don't know if
he ever recovered from that week. The second version
turned out to be a beautiful drawing, though, and he
was happy with it.

"A flood doesn't add up to hanging yourself from the
rafters," Viveros-Fauné points out, and for Golden,
"The destruction of the BCCI drawing was bad, but I
wouldn't call it catastrophic. No doubt, it bummed him
out. Still, his new one was even better, and I know
that Mark thought so as well." Lombardi did not stress
the importance of the incident to Maslon, and neither
Fred Tomaselli, an intimate friend with whom he often
discussed studio practice, nor Carolyn
Christov-Bakargiev, who worked closely with him
installing at P.S. 1, knew about it until after his
death.

"He told me he had been taking sleeping pills," Maslon
recalls.

So when he disappeared, so to speak, i.e. he wasn't
answering his phone or returning calls—which made his
mother very concerned, as he used to talk to her at
least every other day—and he hadn't shown up at a
number of events I knew he was really excited about, I
thought maybe he had OD'd.

Maslon called the police. Her profile of Lombardi's
mental state and habits were sufficient to convince
them to force the door of his apartment; they found
his body, alongside a champagne bottle that he had
opened, apparently drunk from, and suspended from the
ceiling.

Invariably, when people who know the substance of his
work hear of his death, they wonder if Mark Lombardi
could have been murdered. His own story seems to
eerily overlap the red-pencilled codas in his
drawings, "…found dead in his hotel room…"
"…apparently assassinated…" Tempting as such
conspiracy theories are, however, no evidence argues
for them. "I asked the detective involved in the case
if he thought Mark might have been killed," Maslon
explains.

He didn't think so. There were no signs of forced
entry and the apartment was pretty securely locked.
Also he said that Mark was a classic case, i.e.
above-average intelligence, on the verge of success,
and he had never spoken about or threatened suicide.

Susan Swenson recounts similar conversations with the
police regarding forensic and psychological
indicators. Along with Hilary Ann Maslon, Swenson and
Amrhein were the first friends to arrive at Lombardi's
apartment, and in the days following his death, they
arranged with his family for the collection and
storage of all the artwork and research matter that
remained there. The index cards, testament to
thousands of hours of Lombardi's time, were taken back
to Syracuse by his parents; their agreement with
Pierogi offers to make the files available as specific
curatorial or research needs arise. Meanwhile, Amrhein
and Swenson have stored Lombardi's library and other
ephemera recovered from the studio, and Swenson has
attempted to construct a complete curriculum vitae and
catalogue raisonné.

We photographed everything, all the books and his
working set-up, so that his arrangement could be
reconstructed if necessary. We pulled drawings out
from under the bed, looked at every bit of paper,
because we weren't sure what might be important. I
even went through his trash and pulled out an old copy
of his resume, when I was trying to put together
information for his obituary.

Nevertheless, Amrhein acknowledges that he does not
have a complete catalogue of Lombardi's output.

He was selling work out of his studio, and other
galleries had work; it's hard to make a complete list.
I know there was work he sold and never had
photographed. I have, or can account for, most of what
he showed me, but I remember being in his studio and
him pointing to a drawing and telling me, "That's the
first one of these I ever did. I better keep that
one." He also had some sketchy things based on new
ideas he was working on, which he kept, and I haven't
seen them since. They weren't in the apartment when we
got there, and his parents don't have them.

The sketches Lombardi showed Amrhein laid out plans
for a new series, distinct from the other unrealized
idea to display the network-style drawings in
light-boxes. Tantalizingly, these works may have
suggested a coming-together of the "narrative
structures" work with the abstract painting Lombardi
had pursued for years in Texas. Amrhein recalls,

He told me before he died that he'd come to the end of
the drawings. He was going to move on to something
else. Still information-based, using graphs to show
range of wealth or knowledge, using a kind of neo-geo
format. There were sketches, but no finished work. I
don't know if this was a cryptic comment about death,
him telling me "This body of work is over." But he was
planning a new idea, and those drawings are gone. They
weren't in the apartment. It's a mystery.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If an artist's reputation survives because he or she
has been inserted into a canon (if not the canon),
then postulating art-historical precedents for Mark
Lombardi's work becomes a primary task facing his
supporters. It is a testament to the subtlety and
flexibility of his drawings that the question "Whom do
you see as Lombardi's forerunners or key
contemporaries?" elicits such a wildly variegated
field of comparisons. Plotting the formal and
theoretical relationships among the assorted names
mentioned would create a diagram of influence and
reflection not unlike the images themselves. And, like
his images, the matrix of relationship in which his
colleagues place him itself describes a portrait of
the larger community.

Here again the lineaments of Conceptualism arise
repeatedly, only to be unraveled or complicated almost
past recognition. Robert Hobbs, for example, gives
equal weight to the term and to its ostensible
opposite, the lyric. Lombardi's images "hit me very
hard," Hobbs says.

I felt that at long last here was an artist who was
focusing on our current situation. He impressed me
because he touched on so many variables, particularly
neo-Conceptualism and the global political scene. He
was creating a new form of history painting that
provided information about our world at the same time
as he was developing a wonderfully lyric and highly
original art.

Curator Richard Klein, who included Lombardi in his
thematic exhibition "Art at the Edge of the Law" at
the Aldrich Museum in Connecticut this year, likewise
identifies a mix of neo- or post-Conceptualism with a
contradictory or leavening ingredient. In Klein's
view, the crucial alloy appears as a populist or
entertainment-oriented code of ethics.

It is interesting that Lombardi developed such a
tight, formalist way of picturing things that are
ultimately moral. If heaven and hell exist, Lombardi's
drawings are like power-point representations that St.
Peter might create to determine accountability. Or
course the work relates to Conceptual precedents, but
it also really reminds me of crime writers like Robert
Ludlum or John le Carré—complex plots with innumerable
characters that are hard to keep track of.

Novelistic coherence and sprawling scope also arise in
Deven Golden's mind, through comparisons to social
satirists like Mark Twain and Charles Dickens.
Garrulous, mimetic, and moralizing as these writers
may be, in the context of Lombardi's interests they do
not fall as far from Conceptual models as one might
think. For, as Fred Tomaselli points out, the
Conceptual stereotype of dry intellectualism is belied
by a covert investment in the very qualities Klein
highlights. After all, the whodunit and the document
of art-as-idea share a questing after ultimate truths,
first causes.

Mark was part of a group of artists that was
reclaiming Conceptualism from the academy that had
hijacked it in the mid-eighties. His work was warm,
messy, wacky, funny, subjective, but also serious and
smart. It wasn't necessary to totally understand or
agree with the complex power relationships depicted.
Being overwhelmed by the information seemed to be part
of its appeal, and as his work progressed, he gave
equal importance to both form and content. I've always
thought that the sensibilities of "outsider artists"
and Conceptualists were more similar than the art
establishment is willing to admit—at their best, they
both manifest a compelling and visceral visualization
of inner cosmology. Mark and I were both interested in
this and we talked about it often.

Not surprisingly, when asked what kinds of images
Lombardi had collected in his studio, Hilary Ann
Maslon refers to "a book on alchemy, full of graphs
and charts, the aesthetics of ancient maps, etc." The
rhizomatic, fantastical, fractal-architectural forms
suggested by such sources posit a world where order
and disorder fuse and cross-pollinate—from this
perspective, one could argue for a zeitgeist shared by
many of Lombardi's Brooklyn peers. Fred Tomaselli,
Greg Stone, David Brody, and Beth Campbell (among
others) might all be said to play with elaborate
spatial constructs that justify themselves in abstract
terms, but also read as maps of social information and
personal activity. These are not the heroic
meditations of Ab Ex, but a compulsive,
pastiche-oriented, cartoon-inflected inscription of
overload. Tomaselli continues,

We were both interested in seductive visual strategies
that contained the pathology of the "real" world.
Mark's drawings reminded me somewhat of my own
"Chemical-Celestial Portraits" of friends that I began
in 1990, which were based on questionnaires that asked
the "sitter" their birth-date and drug history. My
resulting drawings resembled a night sky filled with
pharmacological words. In both his drawings and my
portraits, our "real" is personal and subjective, but
appears to be based on empirical evidence.

This stylistic sub-set or cohort—like the artists
ranged within Christian Viveros-Fauné's "Pop
Conceptualist" rubric, or the so-called "chart art" of
Campbell, Danica Phelps, or Janet Cohen—accept
Conceptualism's challenge by interrogating the
philosophical premises of art. But they also take
obvious pleasure in surface and good-looks. "It's not
eye-candy," as Viveros-Fauné says. "But at a certain
level, it is."

From the Williamsburg nucleus, Lombardi's associative
genealogy goes on, looping from hermetic-humorous
visionaries like Alfred Jensen, Oyvind Fahlstrom, or
Matthew Ritchie, to abstract diarists like Hanne
Darboven and Roman Opalka, to practical intellectuals
like Robert Smithson or Gordon Matta-Clark. Greg
Stone, meanwhile, offers two names—Francisco de Goya,
and Jackson Pollock—rarely connected in a single arc.

Think about it. Goya gives you topical, political
commentary in the simplest graphic terms, demotic
terms, with captions you don't have to read, but that
transform the work if you do read them….[And] Pollock
was also making webs. Pollock was mapping the
internal, the psychological; Mark was doing the same
thing with the existing economic structure. The world
he rendered already existed and we were it. The same
kind of layered, deliberate, but chance-determined
structure that you would see in a Pollock, Mark was
making in his webs of connections, and the effect is
similarly revelatory. We didn't know what we were
looking at when we read about it—it had to be
articulated visually.

Circling back upon itself like the spheroid tracery of
his later drawings, the hypothetical sociogram of
Lombardi's art historical affinities might finally
branch in two directions. On one hand, a statement by
curator Susette Min (who included him in "Errant
Gestures: Visual and Verbal Correspondences" at Apex
Art in 2000) summarizes the multifaceted appeal of his
enterprise.

I could see his direct hand as well as his process.
More importantly, it was his obsession (via the
meticulous lines, the copious notes, etc.) that draws
you in and forces you to look at histories repressed
or forgotten. I liked the fact that this kind of
systemic charting, usually seen within the circles of
computer system engineers, designers, urban planners,
was pushed forward in an art context. He makes these
familiar objects of design strange.…Even though his
charts focus narratively on the globalization of
capital, he sustains a modernist fascination with
formal structures…he seems to want to visually possess
a concept of political history/landscape in its
entirety….His works are interesting examples of
debates on allegory…a dialectic of displaced
connections that consider the relation of parts to
fractured wholes.

On the other hand, Greg Stone wipes the slate clean,
returning the multiple chains of association to their
origin in Lombardi's mind.

The genesis of this body of work was not directly
influenced by anyone. Mark's knowledge of what had
gone before assured him that the work would find a
place in the art world, that it would be receivable—I
think he probably understood this from the scribble on
the napkin forward.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Distilled from a welter of dis- and misinformation and
refined from dense archives of aesthetic experiment,
Lombardi's "narrative structures" demonstrate a
Cheshire understanding of the reciprocity between
factual solidity and mutable appearance. In a media
culture where few sources report the fine print on
collusion between financial markets, political
operatives, and corporate entities, and few
commentators acknowledge how fluidly form and content,
being and seeming blend, his work both emphasizes and
redresses the lack of coherent analysis from
journalistic and governmental experts. But perhaps
more importantly, it obeys Joseph Kosuth's assertion
that "art…fulfills what another age might have called
'man's spiritual needs.'" Like John Baldessari,
Lombardi culls from the annals of pop culture to make
life's mediatized fragments speak back to themselves
as art; on a profound level, Lombardi's drawings, as
Baldessari says, "want to re-enchant and
re-mythologize." A comparison with Hans Haacke's
"Untitled Statement" (1966) becomes suggestive:

…make something, which experiences, reacts to its
environment, changes, is nonstable…

…make something indeterminate, which always looks
different, the shape of which cannot be predicted
precisely…

…make something, which cannot 'perform' without the
assistance of its environment…

…make something, which reacts to light and temperature
changes, is subject to air currents and depends, in
its functioning, on the forces of gravity…

…make something, which the 'spectator' handles, with
which he [sic] plays and thus animates it…

…make something, which lives in time and makes the
'spectator' experience time…

…articulate something natural…

For the natural, phenomenological, and sensory terms
here, read social phenomena in Lombardi's realm: the
"environment" is geopolitical; "indeterminacy" is
informational; "light and temperature" "air currents"
and "the forces of gravity" are expressed as market
currents, degrees of risk, secrecy, and the force of
law—or lack thereof. The spectator is asked to "play
with" and "experience" time as packaged by
communication channels, to articulate the
perhaps-natural, perhaps-entirely-manipulated
"somethings" of greed, coercion, and media
attention—or its deficit. As Haacke puts it, "the
viewer now becomes a witness. A system is not
imagined; it is real."

"Real," but redolent of fantasy and cerebration,
Lombardi's images have the delicacy of snowflakes;
they are a "plan that implies infinity," as Sol Lewitt
says. It could be argued that nothing is more rational
than a reporter's step-by-step untangling of
money-trails. But Lombardi is a visionary as much as a
reporter, and his work is "mystic rather than
rationalist" in that it seeks to comprehend
incomprehensible scope, to graph in condensed form the
power that quite literally rules the world. His
drawings satisfy because they address a human need for
coherent order drawn from chaos. Such a need, however,
is bound to be frustrated. Instead of blueprinting
perfection, the works' aura of mastery arises in the
context of a sprawling dystopia. Their fragile wholism
is poisoned by the sinister and cynical events that
they describe—acid rain erodes the snowflake; the
pattern is upset; inquiry must be renewed. As stories
about reality, Lombardi's drawings offer a kind of
wish-fulfillment for the confused but conscientious
citizen—"Can you show me how this works?" In a way, he
can. But on a deeper level, of course, it is not that
such concerns about democracy and disclosure, pleasure
and design, are ever answered. Rather, Lombardi
inscribes a surface on which public happenings and
their corollary thought-structures can be indexed. His
drawings delimit a field in which aesthetic,
geopolitical, and epistemological concerns are not
mutually exclusive, where their self-mirroring
identities are tabulated and given two-dimensional
form. Or, to reverse the equation, in these drawings,
the free play of geometric mark-making is imbued with
forceful narrative significance, without becoming any
less abstract, any less free.

Footnotes

1 Jackson Stephens rivals Bath in his role as conduit
between high-level factions. A Little Rock, Arkansas
tycoon who attended the U.S. Naval Academy with Jimmy
Carter and staked Sam Walton to found Wal-Mart in
1970, Stephens was owner of the notoriously toxic WTI
Incinerator in East Liverpool, OH, and a munificent
contributor to the campaign warchests of both Bill
Clinton and George Bush, Sr. He was also embroiled in
the BCCI affair through his association with BCCI
satellite Union Bank of Switzerland—UBS, in turn,
contributed $25 million to the moribund Harken Energy
Corp.

2 "In the Caymans…there are no personal, corporate, or
inheritance taxes, and it is illegal for an employee
or officer of any bank or corporation to disclose any
information about its assets, financing, or ownership.
Not surprisingly, over 20,000 corporations, including
550 international banks and trusts, are currently
registered to do business in the Caymans, which
recently reported over $400 billion in 'offshore' bank
deposits for only 30,000 full-time inhabitants, an
average of $14 million per citizen!"

Banking in a Brave New World," Cabinet No. 2 (Spring,
2001), p. 86.

3 As Golden, tells it, Lombardi made the first drawing
while "talking to a friend of his, a lawyer, in
California. Mark was telling him about a couple of
banks that had closed in Texas, and the lawyer said,
'Yeah, and because of that, these Savings and Loans
closed in California.' Mark said, 'I don't
understand.' And his friend proceeded to tell him how
a series of byzantine corporate connections tied the
various financial institutions together. It was very
convoluted, and so Mark made some notes—he obviously
was predisposed to thinking about this sort of thing.
As Mark told it to me, it was kind of like how some
artists, for instance, do the New York Times crossword
puzzle in their studios to help them clear their
minds. Anyway, every couple of days, after going over
his notes and diagrams, he would call his friend back
in California and ask him more questions, which would
lead him to make more diagrams. Then, one day, after
what I understood to be a couple of months of working
on these diagrams to 'relax,' Mark had his 'aha!'
moment."

4 Though, as Golden remarks, Lombardi did write about
his subjects, and offered these writings in the
gallery, along with legends or visual keys explaining
the drawings' systems of notation.

This report from Wayne Madsen:

July 7/8, 2006 -- SPECIAL REPORT. Those who claim the
Bush administration is a Nazi regime are not far from
the truth. This story is a special investigation of
Bush family slush funds, smuggling, and secret money
conduits from and to various right-wing causes,
including some that are extremely violent. The New
York Times is running a story today about the U.S.
military recruiting Aryan Nation, neo-Nazi, and other
white supremacists into its ranks. The Times' report
states that Neo-Nazi graffiti has sprung up in
Baghdad, in quoting from a report by the Southern
Poverty Law Center (SPLC). The involvement of white
supremacy and neo-Nazi groups with the Pentagon began
in earnest during the administrations of Reagan and
Bush I. According to informed sources who have tracked
the neo-Nazis since the Reagan era, the surge in
extreme right-wing elements in the Federal government
was spurred on by the network of Nicaraguan Contra
support activities created to facilitate going around
the prohibitions enacted by the Congress. A key member
of that strategy was Cheney's Chief of Staff David
Addington, who was with the CIA, the Iran-Contra
Committee in Congress, and then signed on as senior
Vice President for the American Trucking Associations
(ATA). WMR reported yesterday on the involvement of a
foundation set up by McLean Trucking Co., a member of
the ATA, with covert Contra support.

The ATA is a hotbed of GOP activity as well past
connections with support for covert CIA activities.
Its chief lobbyist is Jim ("Whit") Whittinghill, a
former aide to Sen. Bob Dole. Whittinghill's wife,
Nancy Dorn, served as an assistant to Texas
Representative Tom Loeffler and later served as
Special Assistant for Legislative Affairs to
Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush. Dorn
also served as 1989-93), Nancy Dorn worked for Defense
Secretary Dick Cheney as Assistant Secretary of the
Army for Civil Works and Deputy Assistant Secretary of
Defense for Inter-American Affairs. While working for
Cheney, Dorn became a close associate of Addington.
Dorn was also Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for
Legislative Affairs. In 2001, Dorn returned to
government after acting as a lobbyist for Pakistan,
Azerbaijan, and China. She became special assistant
for legislative affairs to Vice President Cheney. In
2002, Dorn became the Deputy Director for the Office
of Management and Budget (OMB), where she served until
2003 before becoming Vice President for Government
Relations of General Electric, the parent company of
NBC and NBC News. (This puts into context the partisan
pro-Bush editorial slants of the network's news
division, particularly Nora O'Donnell, Campbell Brown,
Brian Williams, Tim Russert, and Chris Matthews).

In the late 1980s and early 90s, Dorn was associated
with the network of right-wing neo-confederates who
were gaining tremendous influence in the Republican
Party. While the Army's chief of civil works, Dorn had
control over Arlington National Cemetery and issued
guidance on how the Confederate Memorial Committee of
the District of Columbia could hold its annual
ceremony at the cemetery's Confederate War Memorial
and pay for it with funds provided by the United
Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC). According to John
Edward Hurley, a one-time associate of White House
correspondent Sarah McClendon and the head of the
non-partisan Confederate Memorial Association (CMA),
South Carolina GOP operative and Confederate Memorial
Committee chairman Richard T. Hines, now a major
lobbyist (RTH Consulting) in Washington, DC (whose
clients include Gambia, Saudi Arabia, Cambodia, and
Nigeria), arranged with the UDC to have funds
transferred for the Confederate monument and ceremony
from sources in the South associated with far
right-wing elements. Hines, who was close to South
Carolina Senator Strom Thurmond, saw to it money was
transferred from Metrolina Bank in Charlotte, North
Carolina (connected to North Carolina Senator Jesse
Helms), to First American Bank in Virginia (then owned
by the CIA-connected Bank of Credit and Commerce
International (BCCI)), to the Mid-Atlantic Credit
Union in Gaithersburg, Maryland. One of the officials
involved in this money movement was the chief
accountant for Edison Electric Institute, which was
working closely with Enron and, along with Enron, was
one of the largest contributors to the Bush and GOP
campaign coffers.

The impetus for the Confederate revival at Arlington
Cemetery was promoted by the Sons of Confederate
Veterans (SCV) Jefferson Davis Camp Number 305. Its
members included a number of individuals associated
with white supremacist and neo-Nazi organizations.
According to the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC),
which was the source of the New York Times article on
Aryan Nation and neo-Nazi penetration of the U.S.
military, the SCV has come under the control of
racists and Ku Klux Klansmen. Denne Sweeney, on the
urging of SCV member Kirk Lyons, an attorney for the
Klan, took over as SCV commander in 2004. According to
the CMA's Hurley, Lyons, who ran the Houston-based
Southern Legal Resource Center (SLRC) (a right-wing
rival of the SPLC), was significantly funded by Hines.
Lyons later moved the SLRC to Black Mountain in
western North Carolina. According to Hurley and the
SPLC, the SCV and SLRC are part of a vast network of
far right organizations, including the Council of
Conservative Citizens (a successor to the Klan-linked
White Citizens Councils), the secessionist Southern
Partisan magazine (for which Hines arranged an
interview with then Missouri Senator John Ashcroft),
the secessionist League of the South, the Aryan
Nations, the National Association for the Advancement
of White People, and the National Socialist White
Americans' Party).

With the recent news about neo-Nazi and Klan
penetration of the U.S. military, it is noteworthy
that Hines' wife, Patricia Mayes Hines, was the U.S.
Army's Deputy Assistant Secretary for Manpower and
Reserve Affairs during the George H. W. Bush
administration. Mrs. Hines served under Cheney along
with Dorn, who was permitting neo-Confederate
penetration of Arlington Cemetery, and David
Addington, who was continuing to help cover up the
elder Bush's role in Iran-Contra as Cheney's General
Counsel, and Lewis I. "Scooter" Libby, who was
Principal Deputy Under Secretary for Strategy and
Resources and Deputy Undersecretary for Policy, and
was also involved in senior Bush's covert operations
abroad. Hines, who was an associate of the late Lee
Atwater, Karl Rove's dirty tricks doppelganger,
practiced his dirty tricks trade for George W. Bush in
his home state against John McCain in the vicious 2000
GOP primary.

It is noteworthy that on the day he was arrested,
Murrah Federal building bomber Timothy McVeigh was
wearing a Southern Partisan magazine T-shirt bearing
the Latin phrase, Sic Semper Tyrannis, along with a
portrait of Abraham Lincoln. The phrase was shouted by
John Wilkes Booth after he shot to death President
Lincoln at Ford's Theater. Another violent connection
to the neo-confederates is the FBI's VANPAC (Vance
Political Assassination Conspiracy) case that involved
white supremacist mail bombings directed against
Federal judges. According to the Department of
Justice, "four mail bombs [were] sent in December 1989
to different locations in the southeastern United
States. One killed federal judge Robert Vance [11th
U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals] in Alabama, a second
killed a civil rights attorney [Robert Robinson] in
Georgia, and two others [one at the U.S. Courthouse in
Atlanta and the other at the NAACP headquarters in
Jacksonville, Florida] were discovered before they
exploded. A massive investigation ensued involving the
FBI and several other law enforcement agencies. The
FBI referred to the case as VANPAC because it involved
the assassination of Judge Vance [at his home] with a
bomb sent in a mail package. In June 1991, a federal
jury convicted Walter LeRoy Moody, Jr. [a former
Klansman] on charges related to the bombings." Louis
Freeh, Jr. was appointed the Special Prosecutor in the
VANPAC case. After moving the case from Birmingham,
Alabama to St. Paul, Minnesota, and after introducing
tainted evidence, Freeh won a successful conviction of
Moody, who was sentenced to seven life sentences. An
Alabama court sentenced Moody to death. In
appreciation for his work, Freeh was nominated as U.S.
District Court judge for the southern district of New
York. In 1993, President Clinton named Freeh to be FBI
Director, where he served during the McVeigh case and
the Whitewater and Monica Lewinsky investigations of
Clinton. Vance was a progressive Democrat in Alabama,
having served as Democratic Party chairman for the
state for 11 years. At the time of his death, several
Alabama political figures cited "drugs" and "Colombian
cartels" as the reason for the mail bombings directed
at Federal judges. Vance, a Jimmy Carter appointee,
had incurred the wrath of the neo-confederates who
viewed him as too liberal and called him the "Daniel
Ortega of Alabama." Because of the mail bombings
directed against the Federal judiciary (Moody
threatened to kill 17 judges), there were a number of
judicial resignations around the United States, which
allowed George H. W. Bush to replace them with his own
people.

"Southern Partisan" T-shirt worn by right-wing
terrorist bomber Timothy McVeigh. George W. Bush has
appointed many neo-confederates to top jobs in his
administration.

The threat against judges resumed under Bush's son,
George W. Bush. In 2005, after being threatened with
death by white supremacist and World Church of the
Creator (now "Creativity Movement") head Matthew Hale,
U.S. District Judge Joan Humphrey Lefkow, discovered
the bodies of her 64-year old husband and 89-year old
mother at her home. They had been brutally murdered.
In a bizarre development, a Chicago man named Bart
Ross shot himself in a Milwaukee suburb after being
pulled over by police for a traffic violation. Police
said they found a suicide note in which Ross claimed
responsibility for the murders of Judge Lefkow's
husband and mother. However, Ross had no known
connections to any white supremacist organizations.
Hale had been convicted for threatening Judge Lefkow's
life and obstruction of justice. Threatening judges
was not confined to people like Hale. Then-House
Majority Leader Tom DeLay threatened judges when he
stated, "the time will come for the men responsible
for the death of Terri Schiavo to answer for their
behavior." Senator Frank Lautenberg wrote to DeLay,
stating he was "stunned to read the threatening
comments . . . directed at federal judges and our
nation's courts of law in general."

Matthew Hale: Foot soldier for the GOP in threatening
the lives of Federal judges.

The involvement of neo-Nazis and white supremacists
with U.S. Special Forces, reported by the SPLC and New
York Times, also bears on the neo-confederate
penetration of the Bush administration. Ashbury
International Group, of Sterling, Virginia, a private
military contractor (PMC) offering the services of its
ex-Special Forces personnel to the government, lost a
lawsuit brought against its plans to build a shooting
range in Nelson County, Virginia on the plantation of
Confederate Congressman William Portcher Mills, the
man who designed the Confederate flag. Appearing as a
witness for Ashbury was Michael Garcia, a former
Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security for
Immigration and Customs Enforcement and now the U.S.
Attorney for the Southern District of New York, along
with attorneys for the National Rifle Association.
Another Special Forces link to the neo-confederates is
retired Army Lt. Col. Jeffrey Addicott, a former
counsel for the US Special Forces assigned to the
Pentagon and, who, according to the CMA's Hurley, was
a close associate of top officials in the
neo-confederate movement. Addicott is currently the
Director of the Center for Terrorism Law at St. Mary's
College of Law in San Antonio, Texas and he chaired a
panel at the National Defense Industrial Association's
2006 Special Operations/Low Intensity Conflict
(SO/LIC) conference, an event attended by every major
PMC, including those making huge profits in Iraq.
Hurley released the following statement on August 31,
2005, that implicates a number of Bush I and II
officials in the neo-confederate movement and the
Iran-Contra affair, including Chief Justice John
Roberts:

A Washington association executive has called for an
investigation into the role of Supreme Court nominee
John Roberts when he represented the National Credit
Union Administration, a regulatory agency of the
federal government. He charged that there was a
bizarre intervention by the NCUA to quash a subpoena
for a personal account while Roberts was representing
the group.
Hurley, president of the Confederate Memorial
Association which owned and operated the only
Confederate museum in the nation's capital, said that
ongoing litigation against his association had been
traced to Contra supporters and present and former
employees in the general counsels office of the
National Credit Union Administration. Moreover, Hurley
said that evidence indicated that a $500,000 political
slush fund was being covered up.

Hurley said a court order approving a $15,000
fraudulent legal bill, after being issued nearly two
years ago, was mysteriously submitted to the bank last
week. A two-year lapse in collecting court ordered
fees is unheard of, and Hurley contends that this
shows that the White House is concerned about illegal
NCUA activities being exposed while Roberts
represented the group.

A "Freedom Fighter" fundraiser was scheduled after
Roberts had made several recommendations on the
subject while he was in the White House Counsels'
office. Moreover, Carl "Spitz" Channell and Richard
Miller, who were raising private funds for the
Contras, had met in the White House to ask support for
the Contras (as the Walsh Iran/Contra Report noted).
After the Roberts memos counseled that Contra
fundraising should be held outside the White House, a
"Freedom Fighter Night" was scheduled on July 12, 1986
to be held in October of 1986 at Confederate Memorial
Hall. Hurley said that he cancelled the October event.
However, prior to this, a previous reception at the
Hall had been attended by White House personnel.
Hurley added that the invitation to the October event
was sent from the Capital Yacht Club.

Roberts represented the National Credit Union
Administration when he was with Hogan and Hartson. In
1997, Roberts argued the NCUA case before the Supreme
Court, which dealt with expanding the banking market
for credit unions. In that case, Robert M. Fenner was
listed as counsel for the NCUA with Roberts.

Hurley said that Fenner had employed David Eno as the
head of his fraud hotline operation at NCUA. According
to Hurley, Eno was a commander of the Jefferson Davis
Camp No. 305 of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, an
organization that sued the Confederate Memorial
Association. Kirk Lyons, an attorney who has
represented the KKK and the Aryan Nation, is an
officer in the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Eno and
Richard Hines, another commander of the Jefferson
Davis Camp and the husband of White House Domestic
Policy advisor Patricia Hines, were behind the
litigation against the Confederate Memorial
Association.

Hurley said that the mysterious political funding that
was used in the litigation against his organization
was also used for the annual Confederate ceremonies at
Arlington National Cemetery. He charged that the funds
were part of a secret political slush fund that was
wired overnight through a bank in Charlotte by
Department of Energy attorney Stephen Page Smith. The
funds were traced to the Mid-Atlantic Federal Credit
Union in Gaithersburg, Maryland which was regulated by
Roberts' client, the NCUA. .

A subpoena for this account was quashed by D.C.
Superior Court Judge John H. Bayly. The motion to
quash was submitted to Judge Bayly by attorney Stephen
Bisker, a former employee of NCUA's Robert Fenner and
current contractor for the NCUA who works for a major
credit union auditing firm. .

Hurley also believes that another $500,000 of illegal
political donations from the American Defense
Institute may now be in the account, noting that
attorney Thomas L. O'Neill was on the ADI board and
was another attorney litigating against Mr. Hurley's
association.

Alan Rothenberg, yet another attorney litigating
against the Confederate Memorial Association, is the
treasurer of the U.S. Premier Federal Credit Union.
The president of the USPFCU was Randolph Earnest,
assistant to Ambassador David A. Gross, U.S.
Coordinator for International Communications and
Information Policy at the State Department and the
former executive director of Lawyers for Bush-Cheney,
a group that worked with Roberts during the 2000
election.

Roberts also represented the National Mining
Association. Hurley say that Herbert Harmon, the chief
lawyer in the massive litigation against the
Confederate Memorial Association, uses his home as a
contact address for the Rio Tinto mining operation,
the largest in the world.

The high-profile Confederate ceremonies in Arlington
National Cemetery are held in June and are attended by
such notables as Richard B. Abell, a former Department
of Justice Assistant Secretary in charge of the Office
of Justice Programs and current magistrate for the
U.S. Court of Claims; Nicholas D. Ward, who serves on
the Probate and Fiduciary Rules Advisory Committee of
the D.C. Superior Court; and Robert Wilkie, who
currently serves on the National Security Council
staff at the White House.

Another prominent lawyer supporting the legal action
against Hurley is Col. Jeffrey Addicott, former senior
legal counsel for the Special Forces and current
director of the Center for Terrorism Law.

When Judge Bayly jailed Hurley in 1997 for objecting
to the quashing of the subpoena for the Mid-Atlantic
account which Hurley believes to be at the behest of
the NCUA, Hurley sold the century-old D.C. museum. The
strange motion to quash "by someone other than the
holder of the account shows a massive fraud and an
obstruction of justice in his case," Hurley said.

Hurley cited a Maryland trial that continues this week
as an example of the perilous consequences of dealing
with white supremacists. The trial involves the
largest arson in the history of the state. All of the
burned homes in Charles County belonged to blacks. The
chief witness against the Confederate Memorial
Association was Lewis Doherty, who is now listed as an
organizer of the neo-Nazi National Alliance that was
distributing white supremacist literature in Charles
County prior to the arsons.

Hurley is calling for a complete investigation of John
Roberts connection with the planned "Freedom Fighter"
reception, the National Credit Union Administration,
the National Mining Association and the Rio Tinto
mining operation. He said that all the facts about
Roberts in these matters should be known before there
is "a secular canonization of this man for the highest
court."

WMR has learned that under Bush I, the CIA's use of
the trucking industry and cocaine shipments,
blossomed. This was no where more apparent than in the
state of South Carolina. In 1989, state Representative
Ron Cobb was snared by the FBI in a cocaine bust.
Cobb, a Democrat, was charged with trying to buy a
kilo of cocaine for $20,000 from an undercover FBI
agent. Cobb said he was entrapped to allow the FBI to
obtain a covert operative inside the South Carolina
legislature. Cobb was set up as the head of a phony
Atlanta-based lobbying company -- Alpha Group -- and
directed by his FBI handlers to bribe South Carolina
legislators into pushing a bill to legalize horse and
dog track betting in South Carolina. Rep. Robert Kohn
of Charleston was brought in by Cobb to entrap white
legislators while Rep. Luther Taylor was drafted to
bring African American legislators. In all, 17
legislators pleaded guilty or were convicted of drug
and racketeering charges. Kohn received a lighter
sentence for testifying against his colleagues.

According to Hurley, Kohn's activities in trying to
bribe a judge in South Carolina in order to get a
Florence, South Carolina truck stop owner and major
Republican contributor off the hook for a cocaine
bust, were never adequately pursued by the FBI, mainly
because of links between the South Carolina cocaine
smuggling operations, trucking companies, and Ku Klux
Klan and southern white supremacist organizations that
were assisting in the distribution of cocaine in
support of George H. W. Bush's Iran-Contra
money-making scheme. According to the CMA's Hurley,
Kohn's association with Hines, himself a former member
of the South Carolina House of Representatives, was
known to the FBI. But Hines, as a top GOP figure, was
"off limits" as far as the FBI was concerned. The FBI
told Hurley that "political influence" in the judge
bribery case made it impossible for them to continue
with an investigation, which was said to have involved
cocaine.

Hines was certainly no stranger to the trucking
business, having held a position under the Reagan
administration with the now-defunct Interstate
Commerce Commission, which regulated the trucking
industry, and the Department of Transportation.
Trucking firms associated with the American Trucking
Association were part and parcel with the national
cocaine distribution network in the United States,
according to sources familiar with the covert
operation. The Iran-Contra smuggling operation also
saw money from illegal drug sales and off-shore bank
account caches making their way into the campaign
coffers of a number of U.S. political candidates,
mostly Republicans but also including a few Democrats.

Illicit campaign contributions were particularly
targeted at Florida officials in the state's important
Panhandle, a haven and nexus for drug and weapons
smuggling involving the CIA and Latin America during
Iran-Contra. According to Florida sources, Jim
Appleman, the Florida State Attorney for the 14th
Judicial District of Florida who was based in Panama
City, Florida, gave protection to Bush Senior's
Iran-Contra smuggling operations in northern Florida.
Appleman's 2000 campaign treasurer, Gerald R. Stanton,
was President of Mutual Development Corporation, a
Federal Savings & Loan Insurance Corporation entity
that only existed on paper and eventually siphoned off
the S&L proceeds confiscated by the U.S. government.
Much of that money ended up in Bush family coffers.
Two of the Bush sons, Neil (Silverado S&L) and Jeb
(Broward Federal S&L) were intimately tied into the
S&L collapse. George W. Bush, through his financial
stake in Harken Energy, benefited from money provided
by the defunct Bank of Credit and Commerce
International (BCCI), a major avenue for Iran-Contra
weapons and drug money laundering activities. Marvin
Bush served as Finance Chairman of the Virginia
Republican Party until 1991, after the collapse of the
S&Ls.

While Marvin's role in the S&L collapse and the
Iran-Contra drug and weapons smuggling scheme at first
appears sketchy, a detailed analysis of contributions
to the GOP while Marvin served as the Virginia
Republican Party's finance chair shows definite links
between the youngest Bush brother and the CIA-led
network. Farhad Azima, an Iranian expatriate who was
close to the Shah's family, owned Global
International, which was involved in transporting arms
for the CIA along with an associated air company, Race
Aviation. Azima was a major contributor to the GOP,
including Virginia Senate and House candidates, when
Marvin was in charge of finances for the Virginia
Republicans. The contributions came from Aviation
Leasing and LCA Partners, two of Azima's companies.
Global's planes were maintained by Southern Air
Transport, a CIA proprietary that flew weapons to the
Contras and drugs back from Latin America. Azima was
also involved with Mario Renda in Indian Springs Bank
of Kansas City. Renda, who was convicted of bilking
$16 million from the S&Ls and tax fraud, was a Long
Island mob figure who brokered drug money laundering
for the CIA and the National Security Council. Renda
was associated with four collapsed Virginia Savings &
Loans: Heritage S&L, Investors S&L, Virginia Beach
Federal S&L, and First S&L. Indian Springs collapsed
in 1984, a year after its president died in a
suspicious car fire.

The never-ending parade of Bush family slush funds.

While the air transport segment of the Bush crime
family's weapons and drug smuggling operation involved
CIA proprietary firms and mob elements, the ground
segment involved trucking firms, some of which were
tied to white supremacist and neo-Nazi organizations.
These are the organizations that are now infiltrating
the U.S. military with a wink and a nod from the Bush
administration. The money amassed by the Bushes from
these operations also found their way into secret bank
accounts abroad and blind trusts in the United States.

According to Insider-Magazine.com's John Caylor, the
CIA used its proprietary airline companies in Florida
to ship in drugs and distribute them nationally.
According to Caylor, "former Lt. Col. Thomas Bledsoe,
a former owner of Kenworth of Dothan, Alabama and past
President of Alabama Truckers Association [and
director of CIA proprietary Tepper Aviation, which was
associated with Crestview Aerospace Corporation],
supplied transportation and possible storage of the
goods [cocaine and weapons]. Bledsoe also flew truck
parts nationwide to truckers with his fleet of pilots
and fixed wing aircraft.
U.S. Customs Intelligence reports I’ve laid my eyes on
say the Tepper planes would land late at night with
several armed masked men in black guarding the
aircraft with sub-machine guns while supervising the
on-loading of tractor trailer rigs and local law
enforcement were told to stay the hell away. Bledsoe
became irritated after Customs opened the cover-up
investigation and moved his yacht from BayPoint,
Florida to Fort Lauderdale. Chief Lee Sullivan was
reportedly on his payroll. According to those same
reports Tepper employed 17 pilots in 1992, was caught
with stolen military tanks on board an aircraft and a
gun-battle almost ensued between U.S. Customs and
Tepper black ops people. Tepper was part of the
Iran-Contra network and in its first air crash in
Angola, Bub Petty, a Tepper owner from Dothan, was
killed." Caylor, who has extensive sources inside the
FBI, Customs, and DEA, reported that Tepper/Crestview
maintained drug and weapons smuggling operations right
alongside the DEA at the San Antonio, Texas airport.
The Alabama Trucking Association is a member of the
American Trucking Associations, where Cheney's Chief
of Staff Addington used to hang his hat. The American
Trucking Associations suffered the loss of its Vice
President for Public Affairs, Michael Russell on June
15, 2006. The former Department of Transportation
official, veteran newsman, press secretary for
Michigan Democratic Senator Donald Riegle (whose
Senate Banking Committee investigated George H. W.
Bush's and Ronald Reagan's supply of weapons of mass
destruction to Saddam Hussein), Michigan Democratic
Rep. William Ford, and Vice President Al Gore's
National Performance Review, and resident of Sterling,
Virginia, died in a rafting accident in Colorado.
Russell reportedly fell out of his raft and drowned.

Drugs moved into the United States and throughout
distribution channels controlled by the Mafia, the
Latin American cartels, and the Chinese. While most
people know about Iran-Contra, few have heard about
"China-Contra." The Reagan and Bush I administrations
received a significant amount of arms for the Contras
from the Chinese, who were paid back in cocaine.
During the height of the Iran-Contra operation, the
FBI conducted a huge cocaine bust in Belize. The
arrests led to a route in which the Chinese were
distributing their cocaine through drug routes that
went by air from Belize to Mena, Arkansas and then to
Chinese crime syndicates throughout the United States
and Canada.

The drug smuggling business was a financial windfall
for the Bush family. With slush funds in BCCI and the
S&Ls, the Bush family could move large amounts of
money to their friends in the Republican Party and
fatten the campaign coffers for candidates and office
holders who would be permanently beholden to the
Bushes. But the mother lode for Bush money remained in
off-shore secret bank accounts. Adler B. "Barry" Seal
was a former TWA pilot who had flown marijuana and
cocaine into the United States since the 1970s. When
he was arrested in 1983, Seal had already flown 100
flights into the United States each carrying between
600 and 1200 pounds of cocaine, equating to a street
value of between $3 and $5 billion. However, Seal
became a witness and informant for the government and
proved invaluable for grand juries investigating how
drug smuggling worked in the United States. But that
testimony came too close to certain top leaders who
had been involved in the Iran-Contra and China-Contra
scandals. On February 19, 1986, at the height of the
Iran-Contra scandal, Seal was murdered gangland style
in Baton Rouge, Louisiana at a halfway house where he
was assigned. Those who relied on Seal's testimony and
cooperation in the drug war, including Louisiana
Attorney General William Guste, Jr., were aghast that
such an important witness and informant had no
protection from the government. The government, of
which the number two man was George H. W. Bush, top
kingpin in the smuggling. According to those close to
the Seal family, after Seal was gunned down, several
Swiss bank account numbers were discovered on papers
found in the trunk of Seal's car. They were all in the
name of George H. W. Bush. The numbers were
confiscated by Federal agents.

After the collapse of BCCI and the S&Ls, the Bush
family required a new slush fund. It would not be a
bank but something with which the Bushes were very
familiar -- an energy company specializing in oil and
natural gas. Enron, headed up by Bush friend and
contributor Ken "Kenny Boy" Lay would fill the vacuum
left by BCCI and the S&Ls. Enron, operating with
dubious funds from Saudi Arabia, Russia, and other
sources, would become the launching pad for George W.
Bush's run for the governorship of Texas and the
presidency of the United States. Enron's corporate jet
was used by Bush in the 2000 campaign. Kenny Boy and
George H. W. and W. Bush were close friends. But after
Enron served its purpose, it, too, was allowed to
collapse. Just as with BCCI and the S&Ls, Enron's
employees and shareholders took a bath, while its
corporate dons cashed out before the financial
doomsday arrived.

However, another Bush "phoenix" would arise from the
ashes of Enron. Northern Trust, a Chicago-based
multinational financial firm, would assume control of
Enron's pension plans, employee savings accounts,
401Ks, and Employee Retirement Income Security Act
(ERISA) funds. After Enron's bankruptcy in 2002,
Northern Trust and Enron's principals (including Ken
Lay, Jeffrey Skilling, Andy Fastow, Lou Pai, and Cliff
Baxter (who supposedly committed suicide before his
appearance before a grand jury as a star witness for
the government) were sued in the Houston U.S. District
Court by ex-Enron employees.

Just before Lay and Skilling were convicted in the
Enron case for fraud, Northern Trust submitted Form
10Q to the Securities and Exchange Commission stating
the outcome of the suit against Northern Trust:

"One subsidiary of the Corporation [Northern Trust]
was named as a defendant in several Enron-related
class action suits that were consolidated under a
single complaint in the Federal District Court for the
Southern District of Texas (Houston). Individual
participants in the employee pension benefit plans
sponsored by Enron Corp. sued various corporate
entities and individuals, including the Bank in its
capacity as the former directed trustee of the Enron
Corp. Savings Plan and former service-provider for the
Enron Corp. Employee Stock Ownership Plan. The lawsuit
made claims, inter alia, for breach of fiduciary duty
to the plan participants, and sought equitable relief
and monetary damages in an unspecified amount against
the defendants. On September 30, 2003, the court
denied the Bank’s motion to dismiss the complaint as a
matter of law. In an Amended Consolidated Complaint
filed on January 2, 2004, plaintiffs continued to
assert claims against the Bank and other defendants
under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of
1974, seeking a finding that defendants are liable to
restore to the benefit plans and the plaintiffs
hundreds of millions of dollars of losses allegedly
caused by defendants’ alleged
breaches of fiduciary duty. In June 2003, after
conducting an extensive investigation, the U.S.
Department of Labor (DOL) filed a civil action against
numerous parties charging that they violated their
obligations to the Enron plan participants. The DOL
did not name any Northern Trust entity or employee as
a defendant in its suit. On March 31, 2006, the
Corporation announced that the Bank had reached an
agreement with counsel for the plaintiffs in the Enron
lawsuit to seek approval of a settlement of that class
action at $37.5 million, all of which will be paid by
the Corporation's insurance carriers. Before the
settlement can be finalized, it will have to be
approved by the court. On April 20, 2006, the court
gave preliminary approval to the settlement. A hearing
at which the court may give final approval of the
settlement is scheduled for July 24, 2006. As part of
the proposed settlement, the Corporation has agreed to
give up any claim it might have against Enron,
presently in bankruptcy, arising out of or relating to
the Enron employee benefit plans."

Now, here is where we go full circle back to Bush and
Florida. According to IRS Form 8872, filed by the
Americans for Free Speech, a GOP Political Action
Committee (PAC) located at 2020 Pennsylvania Ave. in
Washington, DC, between Aug. 8, 2004 and September 30,
2004 -- right in the middle of the presidential
election campaign between George W. Bush and John
Kerry, affiliated PACs, including Americans for Jobs,
Families for Conservative Values [also located at 2020
Pennsylvania Ave.], and Taxpayers for Conservative
Government and Floridians for Conservative Values
[both located in Tallahassee, Florida] contributed a
little less than $1 million to Americans for Free
Speech. The Americans for Free Speech laundered the
money to other right-wing political committees [South
Florida Community Council in Coral Gables; People for
Fairness and Equality and Citizens for Safer Streets
in Tallahassee; and Alliance for Protecting Seniors in
Washington, DC] which, in turn, made contributions to
various candidates, mostly Republicans but also a few
Democrats. One of these recipients was Stephen
Meadows, a Democrat, but the Bush family's hand picked
successor to Florida State Attorney Jim Appleman in
the 14th Judicial District of Florida. Meadows would
continue to look out for the interests of the Bushes
in the Florida Panhandle as Appleman had for the
Iran-Contra and S&L frauds. The Americans for Free
Speech also listed an interesting recipient of its
expenditures: a Northern Trust office in North Palm
Beach, Florida received payment for handling the money
wires from and to the GOP PACs.

On April 18, 2005, The Chicago Tribune ran a story on
George W. Bush's 2004 Federal Income Tax Return. Bush
listed his address as: Post Office Box 803968,
Chicago, Illinois, 60680. The post office box is the
downtown post office box of -- Northern Trust -- the
financial group that held Enron's pension and other
financial assets. It is also the holding company that
maintains George W. Bush's blind trust. Bush money,
Enron money, GOP right-wing PAC money, and God only
knows what covert action funds, all handled by the
same company. It does sound all so familiar. Enron is
dead and so is Ken Lay. Long live the new Bush slush
fund -- Northern Trust. The question remains. What did
Ken Lay know about Northern Trust? One can assume
plenty. For the Bushes, its better that one dead man
is now in a position to keep their secrets.
